Welcome to the TDSA bulletin

May , 2016

It’s that time of year!

Time to consider what to do with any projected unexpected funds.

We’re only 2 months until the end of the financial year.

You might like to consider pre-purchasing registrations to TDSA events as a means of ‘soaking up’ any under-expended funds.

If you would like to do this, contact Jenny or Morag who will only be too happy to organise and invoice.

It’s also time to conduct our annual readership survey.

Please email the office and let us know how many other people you forward our email bulletin to (and thank you for sharing it).

In this edition, there are three examples of outside the box transport solutions thinking arising from what is referred to as ‘digital disruption’; much as Uber is an example of digital disruption.

These 3 solutions are just at the cutting edge of implementation and where and how each grows is yet to be seen.

What is certain, is the continued change technology affords organisations and individuals to work collaboratively together via agencies/businesses outside of the traditional community sector.

It’s a brave new world when this type of enterprise meets an individualised and directed funding environment.

I’d also like to draw your attention to the July THINK TANK presented by the man who at TDSA’s 2015 conference was rated as the most engaging and informative of presenters.

21st July THINK TANK

Education & Resources

Enquiries of TDSA In April, TDSA had 65 enquiries: • 56 information and advice • 5 policy advice • 4 transport development

TDSA website stats

For the month of April, TDSA’s website had 169 visitors, 72.7% of these were new visitors and 27.3% returning. A total of 1261 page views were made with an average visit time of 7.03minutes. Although the number of visitors has dropped from the previous month, the number of page views has almost doubled as has the average time spent on site. We attribute some of the increase in these areas to the addition of a separate web page within the site – a new format for people to access the resources from attended think tanks.

World’s older population grows

dramatically According to a new report commissioned by the US-based National Institute on Aging (NIA), An Aging World: 2015, 8.5 per cent of people worldwide (617 million) are aged 65 and over. This percentage is projected to jump to nearly 17 per cent of the world’s population by 2050 (1.6 billion). “Older people are a rapidly growing proportion of the world’s population, and people are living longer, but that does not necessarily mean that they are living healthier,” said NIA director Richard J. Hodes, M.D. Data from the report contained detailed information about life expectancy, gender balance, health, mortality, disability, health care systems, labour force participation and retirement, pensions and poverty among older people around the world. NSW seniors to get discount rides

with Uber

NSW Seniors Card holders will get access to discounted trips with Uber, the state’s Minister for Ageing John Ajaka said. The government has signed an agreement with the ride-sharing service to help them get to where they want to go – or to find work as a driver. ….. Mr Ajaka said the state’s 1.4 million Seniors Card holders will be eligible for $20 off their first UberX ride. They will also be offered workshops on how to use the Uber App and briefing sessions for those interested in becoming Uber drivers. Seniors Card holders may also be eligible for extra discounts such as $10 off Uber rides for selected events (for new and existing users).

Uber Australia general manager David Rohrsheim said Uber would provide Seniors Card holders with more options in terms of travel and access to flexible work. (Excerpt Source: National Seniors, Connect 465)

Queensland launches age friendly

action plan Queensland’s age-friendly community strategic direction statement has been launched. The age-friendly strategy aims to support the Queensland Government’s plan for a community where older people are urged to lead healthy and productive lives. National Seniors’ priorities for the action plan include ensuring older people have access to suitable housing, mature age skilling programs, affordable health and transport, and safety. Economic effects of ridesharing in Australia – Uber

This report provides an initial assessment of the economic effects of ridesharing for Australia – what it means for drivers on the Uber platform, regulators, traditional businesses, and most importantly: consumers. It is intended for the report to be broad in scope, but the sheer newness of the services means that in some areas like price impacts, safety issues and growth of service, the analysis is indicative, or qualitative, where data is not available. Further, while this report discusses some regulatory issues in passing, it does not examine or propose recommendations for the regulatory framework for ridesharing in areas like tax, industrial relations, or transport specific laws. A copy of this report can be downloaded from TDSA website http://www.tdsa.org.au/policy-research/others-policyresearch (Excerpt Source: Deloitte Access Economics)

Have your Say –

Review of Queensland Community Care

(QCC) program The Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services has commenced a review of the Queensland Community Care (QCC) program. The QCC program provides funding to organisations to deliver low-intensity support to people under 65 years of age with a disability or condition that impacts on their day-to-day living. In the context of reforms in both the disability and aged care sectors, it is timely to review the QCC program to ensure that it will best meet the needs of remaining and future clients post-NDIS implementation. The QCC review will be conducted over 2016 and into 2017. The review will consider policy and program design, including program objectives, priorities, target groups, service types, funding and delivery mechanisms. There will be various stakeholder engagement opportunities from April to December 2016. For everyone - including consumers, carers, families: Online Survey – Get Involved - Please share and promote the survey link: http://www.getinvolved.qld.gov.au/gi/consultation/2906/view.html

• A short online survey about the Future of Community Care went live on 13 April 2016 and is open till 27 May 2016. All stakeholders including consumers, service providers, relevant agencies and interested community members are encouraged to have their say about the future program. Please consider completing the survey and sharing the link amongst others in your organisation and your networks and, if relevant promote the survey to clients, families and carers.

• Online submissions and comments regarding the future design of Queensland Community Care are welcome at [email protected]

For QCC funded providers and stakeholder agencies: Discovery Workshops Six initial 3-hour ‘discovery workshops’ will occur in May 2016 in Brisbane, Rockhampton, Toowoomba and Cairns (schedule below), giving QCC providers and relevant sector agencies an opportunity to voice issues and to share ideas for the future of Queensland Community Care program for under 65’s. A second workshop is being held in Brisbane to discuss issues relating to Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities, and also in Cairns to discuss issues of relevance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. If you are interested in attending a workshop or know someone who could be involved, please contact [email protected] Statewide Sector Consultation Workshops Another round of sector consultation workshops across the State will occur later in the year to discuss program design (August 2016 indicative). If you are interested in attending a workshop later in the year, please register your interest at [email protected] More information If you have any queries or comments, please contact [email protected] or phone Carolyn Marslin on 3247 3742.

how much longer before it is available in

Australia??

Want to lease a Car With 6 Friends? Ford Motor Co. sees new business opportunities in leasing—and not in the traditional one customer per car format. The automaker, which is experimenting with unconventional transportation methods such as car-sharing, will soon start providing group leases for its vehicles. Beginning next month, Ford F 0.90% will offer leases on vehicles to self-organized groups of three to six people. The 24-month group leases will only be available at three Austin dealerships—Covert Ford, Leif Johnson Ford and Maxwell Ford. The pilot program called Ford Credit Link was announced, alongside several other initiatives, at the North American International Auto Show. The aim of the initiative is to find new revenue sources for the company. For more information and to watch a promotional video visit: http://fortune.com/2016/01/12/ford-leasing-pilot
