WELCOME TO THE /TECHNOLOGY DEGREE SHOW/16

Images to be updated

Built on a foundation of world-leading research, academic expertise and strong industry links, the Faculty of Technology at De Montfort University (DMU) creates a solid foundation for all of our students as they begin their journey into the world of work.

We welcome you to our Degree Show, a celebration of the creativity and talent of our final year students, showcasing their innovative and exciting creations during their time at DMU.

These students have studied a variety of courses from the Leicester Media School and we have equipped them with the specialist knowledge, experience and industry-relevant skills to enable them to succeed on their chosen career path; ensuring the content of each course is closely linked to industry-standard practices and requirements. By giving our students the opportunity to interact with clients in a realistic environment, as well as encouraging a vibrant atmosphere in our studios and workshops, we have helped them to develop into professionals ready to pursue whatever challenge they choose to embark on next!

Our finalists have invested hours of dedication, creativity and above all hard work to produce what you see at the Technology Degree Show. We hope you enjoy this celebration, and join us in congratulating each and every one of them on their forthcoming graduation.

Animation BA (Hons) integrates art, design and technology, giving our graduates a diverse skill set and preparing them to pursue a wide range of careers; from film, television and games, through to advertising and visual effects (VFX).

Our students engage with practitioners and visiting staff who have industry experience. They learn a variety of useful skills – from basics to more advanced technical skills, with the opportunity to focus on 2D, 3D, experimental animation and VFX. In the final year, students are able to work on live project briefs, from which they create a showreel of their creative and professional work.

We are one of the very few universities in the UK certified as a NUKE trainer. NUKE software is used in the VFX industry by many of the major London post-production houses. Students have access to such industry-standard tools as TVPaint, Maya and Mudbox, and to mocap, blue and green screen and audio and video suites.

Graduates from the course have gone on to work for major production houses, animation studios and games companies. Graduates Ben Carlson and Daniel Caffery recently worked on the Oscar winning sci-fi hit Ex Machina.

ANIMATION BA (HONS)

ANIMATION BA (HONS)

Alex has had a passion for animation form a young age, and since realising this could also be a career choice, he has focused on achieving that goal. Finding that he particularly enjoyed the 2D animation aspects of the course, Alex focused on this for his final year project; a 2D animation about a lighthouse keeper trying to survive in a world destroyed by pollution, which demonstrated the culmination of all the artistic skills he has developed on the course.

The support of a team of tutors who “were incredibly friendly” helped Alex to make the most of his final year project. He believes that their support, along with the valuable insight into industry practice which came from working on live professional briefs, have given him a strong skill set.

Having spent last summer creating an informative 2D animation for DMU’s Centre for Learning and Study Support, Alex now looks forward to getting into industry; “I really just want to work within a company and work my way up, soaking in all the influence and learning from the best to become a great animator. I want to spend my time working on 2D animations, either in the animation stage or the layout and visual development stage.”

ALEX [email protected]

I HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE CHANCE TO WORK ON MY ARTISTIC SKILLS – BOTH RAW AND DIGITAL – WITH THE HELP OF LIFE DRAWING CLASSES, WHICH IS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT FOR ANIMATION.

David enjoyed the variety of skills he learnt on the course; he now has experience in a broad range of software, and can model and animate using a range of techniques and methods. The culmination of these skills can be seen his final project, which demonstrates the integration of different approaches. The final result was an animation based on a ‘cat burglar’ attempting to steal a Faberge egg, with 3D rendered scenes. The rendered scenes were then transferred onto TV paint and drawn over to create the outline and stronger highlights.

David has enjoyed learning to model and animate, presenting to peers and enhancing his skills in concept design throughout his three years studying at DMU. He aims to be a generalist animator in the future in 2D and 3D animation and 3D modelling. DAVID

I HAVE ENJOYED THE TRIPS TO INDUSTRY DESTINATIONS, LECTURES EACH WEEK ON THE DIFFERENT SOFTWARE PACKAGES, AS WELL AS ADVICE AND FEEDBACK ON MY WORK.

Liberty chose DMU based on the wide variety of work produced by our students and graduates and the diversity of skills available to learn. At the time she wasn’t sure which area she wanted to specialise in and wanted to explore a range of techniques.

The specialist skills of the tutors helped to support this exploration, as they were always on hand to help with different aspects of the work, often giving varying opinions – something Liberty liked, because it “allows you to make your own professional choices to move forward and produce a stronger outcome”. Whilst studying, Liberty undertook a professional brief for the DMU Kimberlin Library, which gave her an insight into working with a client and meeting their expectations. Liberty is now confident in her ability to create a strong piece of animation which could be shown to industry professionals.

Liberty’s project on display at the Technology Degree Show is a 2D title sequence for a hypothetical television series about children staying with their grandparents called ‘Don’t Tell Mum and Dad’, made using traditional paper collage, Photoshop and TVPaint. Liberty is now looking to secure a role in industry, with a particular interest in children’s television.

I CAN’T EXPRESS ENOUGH HOW MANY DIFFERENT PATHS THE COURSE ALLOWS YOU TO TAKE. A PROJECT CAN RANGE FROM A TECHNICAL, HIGHLY REALISTIC VFX PIECE, TO A SOUND DRIVEN 2D ABSTRACT PIECE. SO IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHICH ROUTE TO TAKE YET, YOU’LL HAVE ALL THE OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO EXPLORE.

ANIMATION BA (HONS)

Lizzie really enjoyed the variety of skills she learnt on the course and developing her strengths across a wide range of areas; including gaining experience with software used in industry, VFX, life-drawing, 2D animation and modelling, rigging and animating 3D characters. Practicing all of these skills enabled Lizzie to develop her own personal artistic style and become more confident in her skills, which contributed to her final project; a short film featuring a lonely young witch who goes out into the forest to find an ingredient, but unintentionally makes friends with a ghost along the way.

Through taking part in a Frontrunner placement and animating in a professional capacity, Lizzie developed her knowledge of the industry and important client management skills for freelance work. Learning about “a wide range of aspects related to the film industry, not just animation” also helped shape Lizzie’s ambition to pursue a career in character animation, in both 2D and 3D - which she is extremely passionate about. Lizzie says “I love bringing characters to life with movements which convey their emotions and personality.”

LIZZIE [email protected]

THE ELEMENTS I ENJOYED MOST ABOUT MY COURSE WERE THE LIFE DRAWING AND BEING IN AN ENVIRONMENT THAT IS CREATIVE. THE OTHER PEOPLE ON THE COURSE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO HELP YOU OUT IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH YOUR ANIMATION AND I THINK THAT’S REALLY IMPORTANT.

Each of our Game Art Design finalists have worked towards their Creative Skillset accredited degree by producing a personal portfolio of work to a professional standard. Their studies have focused around three key themes: Critical Studies; Game Production and Visual Studies.

They have each undertaken at least three industry set briefs and worked with current industry leaders to produce their work. Artists Del Walker and Ben Keeling from Creative Assembly and Mike Pickton form Ubisoft provided professional content to support the professional practice module. Some of our students have undertaken internships with world-leading companies such as BMW Visualisation in Munich, and all third year students have had an individual industry mentor for their final major project; ensuring they have the skills and confidence to launch a successful career.

OFF THE MAP COMPETITION

Teams from DMU picked up first, second and third places for the quality of their work in the Off the Map contest, run by GameCity and the British Library, which took place at this year’s GameCity videogame exhibition in Nottingham with the theme ‘Alice in Wonderland’. This year DMU has entered teams in the current competition to design games themed around ‘Shakespeare Off The Map’.

GAME ART DESIGN BA (HONS)

Anya chose Game Art Design at DMU based on our Creative Skillset accreditation, the professional standard facilities and our connections to industry. During her time here, Anya has learned many vital ‘soft’ skills, such as team work and how to create a strong portfolio; as well as technical skills such as using software, digital painting and 3D modelling.

All of this is culminated in Anya’s final major project, creating three environment dioramas based on the fantasy writing of Robin Hobb, who is excited to see the final outcomes. Anya praised the support of the academics on the course, saying: “I particularly love how dedicated and passionate all of the tutors are, who are always available to look at course work”.

Anya received a job offer prior to graduating, and has decided to move home to continue practicing art.

Carl was an avid gamer from a young age, so finding a career that could combine his keen interest in traditional art and gaming made him decide to study Game Art Design. He said: “I sought the necessary steps to make it in the industry - starting with DMU.” Throughout his time here, Carl has learnt a wealth of skills; from the fundamentals of 3D art, to the design process and specialising in environment art. All of these skills have resulted in a final major project based around the concepts of a gateway using 3ds Max, Photoshop, substance painter, Zbrush and UE4.

Carl has enjoyed the studio atmosphere at DMU and working with other designers to develop ideas and skills, and has taken part in both the national ‘Off the Map’ and the ‘Search for a Star’ competitions. His ultimate ambition is to work for a company such as Creative Assembly, who make top of the range AAA titles.CARL JAMES

I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS COURSE TO OTHERS; I’VE SEEN SO MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE DEVELOPED COMPETITIVE AND INDUSTRY-STANDARD SKILLS OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS, TO THE POINT OF GETTING REALLY GOOD JOB OFFERS. THERE ARE SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE ON GAME ART DESIGN.

Lewis was drawn to studying at DMU because of our reputation for graduate employment, believing this particular course gave students a higher level of skill than any other university he had looked at. He has praised the opportunities he was given to meet many industry professionals who offered advice and feedback on his work, as well as the multiple opportunities to work in a group project to simulate actual game development. Lewis has based his final year project around the novel ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’, creating a concept art book for a hypothetical sci-fi style fighting game.

After graduation, Lewis is hoping to acquire a studio position as a concept artist, aiming to eventually become a freelance artist.

Jonah chose to study Game Art Design at DMU because of the Creative Skillset accreditation, stating that DMU had the best employment statistics for his course and a well established reputation for producing quality graduates. After beginning the course with no experience in 3D skills, Jonah states his time on the course allowed him to strongly develop in this area, and he enjoyed the open studio environment which he says helped him learn quickly and further develop his skills. For his final major project Jonah created a series of pieces demonstrating his realistic texturing and hard surface modeling skills. Jonah was awarded The Vice Chancellor’s Distinguished Student Award in his second year, and hopes to work as a vehicle artist once he graduates.

STUDYING AT DMU HAS BEEN AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE, AND I’M GRATEFUL TO HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GRADUATE FROM THE BEST GAME ART COURSE IN THE COUNTRY.

GAME ART DESIGN BA (HONS)

Ewan particularly enjoyed the welcoming feel that he experienced on his course from day one, stating that the strong sense of community between different year groups was one of the major strengths. His reason for choosing DMU was that it offered the highest standard in education “with a focus on traditional art and design fundamentals as well as cutting-edge software and techniques for real-time and games”. Ewan gained vital skills in polygon modelling, material and texture development. He has made the most of his time at DMU; his team came second in the 2014 ‘Off The Map’ competition – hosted by the British Library and Crytek – for creating a real-time experience based around the novel ‘Dracula’. He also undertook a work placement for 13 months as part of the visualisation department of the BMW Design Group in Munich.

Ewan has work lined up at an architectural visualisation company AVR London when he graduates, and hopes to go into more projects in the games, film or virtual reality fields later in his career.

GRAPHIC DESIGN BA (HONS)GRAPHIC DESIGN AND ILLUSTRATION BA (HONS)

GRAPHIC DESIGN BA (HONS)Throughout the Graphic Design course, our students work on a series of projects to explore and develop their skills in creative graphic communication and problem solving. They have experienced continuous assessment and learned critical interpersonal skills with the support of tutors, peers and industry experts. Each student has chosen special topics in addition to studying Cultural and Contextual Studies, Integrated Graphic Studies, and Applied Professional Practice Studies. They have become accustomed to working on live project briefs set by clients and fulfilling them using our professional and creative facilities.

GRAPHIC DESIGN AND ILLUSTRATION BA (HONS)This course covers a wide range of image-making skills, and the final year students have all studied how to apply these skills in a professional setting in dedicated facilities. By making use of computer suites, multi-purpose studios and large workshops on campus, the students have developed their knowledge in a practical and creative setting while focusing on modules such as Cultural and Contextual Studies, Image Making for Illustration and Media Communication and Technology for Illustration. In the final year students also have the opportunity to work on live briefs for real clients and take on several projects, some of which were entered into competitions both nationally and internationally.

F10 DESIGN SOCIETY

The F10 Design Society acts as a creative hub for Graphic Design BA (Hons) and Graphic Design and Illustration BA (Hons) students to get together and share knowledge, ideas and skills with students from all years of the courses.

They also manage the student-run design agency Studio F10, which takes on external client briefs and projects. This helps equip our graduates with real experience dealing with clients, managing a project from end-to-end and producing work for their portfolios.

GURUS AND GRASSHOPPERS

The Gurus and Grasshoppers scheme gives our second and third year students (gurus) the opportunity to mentor first year students (grasshoppers) and help them to work through a project brief over 11 weeks.

The gurus mentor the grasshoppers during this process. This popular program was set up by Ian Newsham (Graphic Design and Illustration principal lecturer), who pioneered a project that encourages students to take ownership of their course and their future as specialists. This scheme is currently available to Graphic Design BA (Hons), Graphic Design and Illustration BA (Hons), Game Art Design BA (Hons) and Animation BA (Hons) courses, and many of our students take advantage of the chance to develop their communication skills, explore their subject and build relationships.

THE STUDENT STARPACK COMPETITION

Starpack is an international package design competition, established in 1964, and challenges students from a wide range of courses, such as graphic design, structural/product design, and materials/technology, to submit solutions to problems set by brand-leading FMCG companies, design agencies, and manufacturers. The expectation is that students really challenge conventional thinking and break the rules with off-the-wall creativity and clever use of materials. The winners enjoy global recognition and frequent offers of employment. This year DMU students a won a record of 10 accolades, including a Gold Award.

PAPER ROSE / GFSMITH - “ON THE CARDS” COMPETITIONThis greeting card design competition aims to raise awareness within the student population of the innovation and vibrancy of the greeting card industry and to encourage the most talented and innovative designers to demonstrate their talents.

Graphic Design and Illustration BA (Hons) final year student Danielle Wetton was chosen as the winner of the technology category of the nationwide competition, with judges praising her originality and ability to add an interactive element to the process of sending cards. Danielle caught the eye of judges with her Selfie greetings card series #SaySelfie, which cleverly plays on our desire to share images with friends. Card recipients can detach the design on the front of the card – which includes crowns, sunglasses and beards – take a selfie wearing it and send to the person who sent them the card. They are also invited to share the selfie to an Instagram site using the hashtag #SaySelfie. The cards are on sale in Paperchase stores across the country.

GRAPHIC DESIGN BA (HONS)

NEXT MENSWEAR INDUSTRY BRIEFDMU worked with graphic design team at Next Menswear to create a live brief as part of the professional practice module, giving third year students the chance to work with a big brand and gain real-life insight into industry practice, surface-printing techniques, trend recognition and design development. The task was to create a range of graphics for Next mens or childrens wear and an accompanying ‘look book’ in which the designs would be shown in context. At the end of the project Next would choose a winner to receive a two week graphic design internship with them at their design headquarters near Leicester.

The students were encouraged to be as experimental and exciting as possible with their initial ideas and Head Designers at Next Michael and Dan came on to campus frequently to offer feedback, answer questions and show us lots of examples from their own ranges. The students embraced the brief with great enthusiasm and created a wide variety of ranges, from formal menswear accessories to children’s sleepwear and everything in between. They presented their final ideas to Next in the DMU studio; demonstrating their professionalism. They did such a great job that Next picked not one, but five winners to intern this summer!

Congratulations to winners Megan Davies, Amy Austick, Jared Barley, George Jacobs and Eloise Merian.

Emily chose DMU because of the strong course content, which she said “stood out” from other universities she had visited. Since beginning her studies, tutorials have expanded her skills in animation, computer-aided design and drafting, and she is thankful for the weekly feedback she received on her work which constantly pushed her to improve. For her final year project, and as her entry in the Student Starpack Awards – for which she won a silver award - Emily created a Bug House made from corrugated card, designed so that children can paint it themselves to attract the insects.

I MOST ENJOYED GAINING KNOWLEDGE FROM MY PEERS AND TUTORS, AND BEING ABLE TO BE AS CREATIVE AS I CAN BE.

Krupa completed an Art Foundation Diploma before enrolling on to Graphic Design BA (Hons) at DMU. She was impressed with the facilities on offer to our students, who are based in their own naturally lit studio, which Krupa describes as “a creative environment and a hive full of activity”. In addition to this, students have access to a wide range of professional standard facilities to help with specialist skills, such as print-making, prototype-making and photography.

The project pictured here is a ‘geek chic’ typeface Krupa developed as part of a university directed project where the aim was to create your own typeface and type specimen. Krupa developed a hand drawn type and adjusted using digital formats.

Throughout her studies Krupa has developed as a designer through taking part in national competitions such as ‘Design and Art Direction’ and being employed through DMU’s Frontrunner scheme to work on the Demon Magazine. These initiatives, along with the support of the tutors, have guided Krupa in the direction she wanted to work. She is now looking for a junior designer role with hopes of working her way up to a creative designer in the future.

Helen chose DMU to top-up her qualifications after completing a HND, and was impressed by the open-plan naturally lit studios. Whilst on the course she found the industry experience of the tutors helpful in pushing herself and building her confidence. Helen found the live industry briefs our students undertake the most enjoyable part of the course, and she also won a Gold Award in the Student Starpack Competition for her Playaway portable activity table for children.

This project was the answer to a brief of using corrugated cardboard as an alternative material for a product or packaging which was already on the market. Following on from this great success, Helen is now looking for work as a Graphic Designer.

After attending an Open Day at DMU Sarah was impressed by the commitment to our students, and liked how well the tutors know each individual student and their work. Having considered many different areas of art and design, she chose Graphic Design because it is creative while requiring attention to detail. Sarah has enjoyed the freedom to explore ideas and push herself whilst on the course, which encourages all students to think outside the box and try new things in a friendly and supportive studio environment. Sarah praised the teaching team by saying; “the relationship between the course team and the students is fantastic. The tutors know who we are and how we work, and always push to get the best out of us.”

For the Technology Degree Show Sarah is showing her project ‘Pitchwork’ which aims to address the number of tents which go to landfill after being abandoned at festivals.SARAH

Amy chose DMU because of the friendly atmosphere and the high calibre of student work being produced. She was inspired to create work of the same standard, and recognised that the wide range of industry competitions and internships which DMU students are encouraged to take part in could help her towards this goal. The wide variety of options which explore all aspects of illustration also appealed to Amy as she wasn’t sure which aspect she wanted to specialise in at first.

During her time on the course, Amy has developed her own personal style and is now ready to go into industry; having further developed her skills in drawing and printmaking, as well as digital skills such as Photoshop. In her second year Amy won DMU’s Priestly award for outstanding performance, and is also one of five students to have earned an internship with NEXT clothing after graduation.

The project on display at the Technology Degree Show is a children’s pop-up book about an alien who visits earth, which Amy created using charcoal, paint, pencil and edited on Photoshop. In the future Amy hopes to establish herself as a freelance illustrator.

THE COURSE HAS COMPLETELY CHANGED ME AS A PERSON, AND I AM MUCH MORE CONFIDENT. THE TUTORS REALLY GOT TO KNOW ME AND MY WORK, AND HAVE ENCOURAGED ME TO BE MY OWN PERSON.

Amy decided to choose DMU based on the positive feedback from current students and their experiences. She has enjoyed working in a collaborative studio atmosphere with the support of the course team who “are always there if you need someone to talk to”.

During her time at university, Amy has made the most of every opportunity; she took part in a #DMUglobal trip to Amsterdam to expand her design knowledge and inspiration, and has also entered national competitions such as the Macmillan Children’s Book Prize. Amy also produced a book called ‘A Big Chunk of Land’ set around Greenland made using Photoshop, Indesign, pen and ink. It has been featured by Visit Greenland and is available on Greenland shores.

With the support of academics and technicians, our students are able to produce work of fantastic quality, being one of only six community radio stations in the UK to broadcast around the clock, and taking on projects from external clients for Demon TV.

Having first-hand experience of working collaboratively to produce multimedia content, in a range of roles from editing to presenting, gives our students unmatched experience of industry practice and a strong set of transferable skills.

MY TIME AT DEMON MEDIA HAS GIVEN ME A GREAT RANGE OF EXPERIENCE; FROM RAISING THOUSANDS FOR CHARITY, TO COMMISSIONED VIDEOS, TO MY OWN RADIO SHOW. IT HAS BEEN ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY, SET ME UP FOR THE BIG WIDE WORLD.” Paul Blackmore, Media Production graduate

Annie chose at DMU after she visited on an Open Day and loved the campus, the atmosphere and Media Production facilities on offer.

Annie was particularly drawn to the fact that the course covers a broad range of subjects on all aspects of the media industry, as she didn’t know what she wanted to specialise in at that stage.

The course has allowed Annie to learn the technical aspects of camera equipment, and become highly skilled in using a variety of editing software. Having been on training at the BBC Wood Norton Academy, Annie also felt more confident working within our industry-standard green screen studios.

The support of the course team, who are “always available to contact and willing to help” has also been instrumental in working towards producing her images; including portraiture, high speed and still life, from the Advanced Imaging Techniques module, which Annie is exhibiting at the Technology Degree Show.

In the future Annie hopes to go travelling and find work in the photography industry.

NOT ONLY HAVE I BECOME BETTER AT HANDLING EQUIPMENT, I HAVE LEARNED KEY SKILLS IN DOCUMENTARY FILMING AND STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY; TWO SUBJECTS I HAVE ENJOYED THE MOST AT UNIVERSITY.

Calum was impressed by the facilities at DMU as well as the variety of modules available in audio, radio, TV, post-production and photography. Studying such a broad spectrum of subjects has given Calum a strong skillset and understanding of all areas of media production; from production to editing.

The academic team and expert technicians have supported him in creating the three projects Calum is exhibiting in the Technology Degree Show. One of which is a group documentary about the pressures of University rowing, another is a documentary about a tattooist from Leicester, and the third project is a short trailer for a film Calum conceptualised, called ‘Torn’.

This incorporated the use of cinematic filming techniques, as well as special effects and post-production editing skills incorporating video and audio.

In the future, Calum would like to travel and incorporate his love for film and video within his travels.

Haroon was impressed by the facilities at DMU, and that the campus is within walking distance of Leicester city centre and accommodation.

The practical focus of the course also attracted him, as he wanted to build a diverse range of skills across a wide range of subjects.

He has gained confidence in himself and his use of editing software including, After Effects and Premiere Pro, and has found a passion for video editing and creating videos.

Haroon also won the ‘Lifetime Contribution to the Festival’ award for Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival as part of the Demon FM team, and he had the opportunity to conduct interviews with some “pretty famous comedians”.

The project he is exhibiting in the Technology Degree Show is photography from Barcelona, demonstrating the principles he learned on the Advanced Imaging module such as composition and post-production editing.

After graduation Haroon is looking for a career in the video and film sector within editing.

THE COURSE TEAM ARE ALWAYS AVAILABLE FOR ANY QUERIES I HAVE. THERE’S A LOT OF QUICK COMMUNICATION AND THEY ARE ALWAYS HELPFUL AND CLEAR.

Mohammed chose DMU after seeing how close the campus, accommodation and city centre are to one another, giving it a community atmosphere.

Media production had been a long-standing passion of his since he started producing graphic work, and he wanted to enhance his existing skills.

During the course Mohammed has enjoyed collaborating with other students who had the same interests and networking for the future. Mohammed also won a competition to design a new logo for E-ACT and Inspiring Interns with another student on the course.

For his project on display at the Technology Degree Show, Mohammed produced a trailer about a scientist who takes revenge on those who have hurt him.

Mohammed used a range of equipment and software, including a Canon 5D Mark III, Filex lights kit, Sony Vegas Pro 13 and Logic.

After graduation he is going to continue his freelance work in media, which he has been building up throughout his time at university.

I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS COURSE TO OTHERS. USE YOUR TIME BEFORE UNIVERSITY TO LEARN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN, SO THAT WHEN YOU DO GET TO UNIVERSITY YOU ARE ENHANCING SKILLS YOU ALREADY HAVE.
