1. You must be a registered attendee, have a smartphone, and have registered your mobile phone number. If you haven’t preregistered your mobile, you may do so at check-in.
2. Once registered, you will receive a personalized link via a text message. This link will allow you to view auction items and place your bids through Saturday, May 6, at 8:00 p.m.
3. No smartphone? No worries. Bidding buddies are available during the event with tablets to assist you in placing your bid.
4. Once you have viewed and selected a package to bid on, you have 3 options: bid the next increment, set a maximum bid, or simply “watch” the package.
• You will receive a text message alert if you bid in increments and are outbid at any point before the Silent Auction closes.
• If you enter a maximum bid on a package, the system automatically places bids in your favor until your max bid is reached or until the Silent Auction closes. If someone else places a higher max bid on that package, the system prompts you to enter a higher bid.
5. To keep an eye on items you’ve bid on, select “Menu,” and then select “My List.”
6. To purchase a package at the Buy Now price, select “Buy Now.”
7. When the Silent Auction closes, the guest with the highest bid wins!
8. Check your winning packages under “My List” and come by the check-out at the end of the evening to claim your winnings.
Live and Reverse Auction Bidding Our live auction will take place immediately following dinner. We will offer wonderful vacation packages and other extraordinary offerings.
Dreams, hopes, and ambitions for a better tomorrow are at the core of our work with people in need. This year’s Gala guests have the ability to directly help UCM fulfill its mission by participating in the reverse auction. Bidding will start at $5,000 and continue through several levels of lowering denomination. Bid early and bid often!

2017 UCM Annual GIVE FROM THE HEART Gala | Empower Transform Enrich
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
On behalf of the UCM Board and team – and especially the families we serve – thank you for joining us tonight for the 2017 Give From The Heart Gala.
Thank you to The Friends of UCM, our hosts who make this celebration possible. This extraordinary group of volunteers provides both community education and fundraising to help neighbors in need. We are grateful for The Friends’ enthusiasm, energy, and creativity. They exemplify the caring and can-do spirit in our great community.
We extend special thanks to all our Gala sponsors for their generous support. And we thank each of you, for choosing to attend and support our community tonight.
This year, we are pleased to honor retired Fairfax County Supervisor Gerry Hyland with our inaugural Gerald W. Hyland Humanitarian Award. We are grateful for his many decades of servant leadership and unwavering commitment to our community.
Your generosity tonight creates a much brighter future for thousands of people in our community. What does your support mean for a struggling family? It means a child starts Kindergarten ready to learn, a parent’s English skills improve so they’re able to obtain a better job, a tween gets homework help on the computer at the UCM community center, and a group of low-income neighbors come together to plan how they can improve their diverse community.
Their success starts with you. You make it possible for our clients to have a caring place to turn to for help and hope in their time of need. While they come to UCM for help with practical needs, they receive much more than just food or financial assistance to avoid eviction. They get the hope they need to gain independence and build a better future for their families.
How can you be part of this success? Give from the heart: donate, volunteer, advocate to empower, transform, enrich. Your support for UCM is a sound social investment that helps people become self-reliant members of our community.
Please join us at the heart of community, where people in need connect with people who want to help. Together, we change lives – and lift up all our hearts.
Thank you. We hope you enjoy the evening.

2017 Gerald “Gerry” W. Hyland Humanitarian Award
UCM created the Gerald W. Hyland Humanitarian award to recognize outstanding individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to the welfare and overall economic prosperity of the community and whose accomplishments are consistent with the goals and direction of United Community Ministries.
Gerry Hyland was first elected to represent the Mount Vernon District on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in Fall 1987 and retired 28 years later, after serving 7 terms.
A resident of Northern Virginia for nearly 60 years, Hyland was instrumental in keeping the Inova Mount Vernon Hospital open; he championed for road and street improvements; defended tax relief for seniors; worked with Fort Belvoir to improve engagement with our community; helped shape the redevelopment of Route 1; and so much more.
Gerry served as a member of the UCM Board of Directors (1981–1987), including a term as Board Chair. He has been invaluable as a board member and advocated for residents to have access to services during the most vulnerable times in their lives. Under his leadership, the UCM Early Learning Center was established in partnership with Fairfax County and the Fairfax County Schools. The center is designed to address the lack of safe, quality, and affordable developmental childcare. Among his countless accomplishments, Gerry helped UCM secure the building on Fordson Road; established a relief fund through UCM to assist in the recovery efforts of families affected by the flooding in Arlington Terrace; and supported the partnership of UCM, the Northern Virginia Family Services and Reston Interfaith on issues surrounding transitional housing and implementing the home-visit model of Healthy Families America.
Hyland is a true civic leader and valuable asset to the vitality of Mount Vernon and has remained steadfast in supporting the wellbeing for all. UCM is proud to award this inaugural Humanitarian Award to such a remarkable prototype of dedication and commitment to the promotion of respect and understanding for all including the neighbors served by UCM.
Congratulations!
