COMMUNION AT TRINITY

We invite baptized Christians who acknowledge their sinfulness, trust in Christ as their Savior and recognize the real presence of Christ’s Body and Blood in the bread and wine for the forgiveness of their sins to join us at the Communion table. For those unable to drink wine, white grape juice is available in the center of each tray. Gluten-free bread is also available; please ask a pastor or elder. Those who choose not to commune may come forward and signal their desire to receive a prayer of blessing by crossing their hands over their heart. If you would like to receive Communion and are unable to come forward, please notify the Elder on duty or Pastor Buss before service begins. Communion is celebrated every week at 8:00 and Monday night, at the 10:30 service on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays and at the 10:45 (gym) service on every 2nd and 4th Sunday.

Prayer of the Day

P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you. P Let us pray. C O God, our Maker and Redeemer, You wonderfully created us and in the incarnation of Your

Son yet more wondrously restored our human nature. Grant that we may ever be alive in Him who made Himself to be like us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

The Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 61:10-62:3

10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11 For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations.

Zion's Coming Salvation

62 For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch. 2 The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. 3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

The Second Reading: Galatians 4:4-7 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel P The Holy Gospel according to Luke, the second chapter, C Glory to You, O Lord.

The Holy Gospel: Luke 2:22-40

22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,

29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”

33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” 36 And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, 37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. 39 And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.

(Please be seated. All children are welcome to come forward at this time. Parents are welcome also).

Apostles’ Creed Hymnal 192

C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen.

Service of the Sacrament Preface P The Lord be with you.

C And with thy spirit. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them up unto the Lord. P Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God. C It is meet and right so to do. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You,

holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, whose way John the Baptist prepared, proclaiming Him the promised Messiah, the very Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, and calling sinners to repentance that they might escape from the wrath to be revealed when He comes again in glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

Our Lord is the Lord who serves. Jesus Christ came into the

flesh not to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. On the

cross He offered Himself as a spotless sacrifice for the sin of the whole world. Through

His perfect life and death, He accomplished forgiveness and salvation for all before the

Father in heaven. By His empty tomb and ascension into heaven, He declared His

victory over sin and death to all the world. Seated now at the Father’s right hand, He

graciously serves His church with the gifts of salvation. On the last Day, He will come

again to gather His elect from every nation to celebrate the feast that will have no end.

Our Lord serves us today through His holy Word and Sacraments. Through these

means, He comes among us to deliver His forgiveness and salvation, freeing us from

our sins and strengthening us for service to one another and to the world. At Holy

Baptism, He puts His name upon us, pours His Holy Spirit into our hearts, and rescues

us from sin, death and the devil. Through Holy Absolution, He pronounces His

forgiveness again and again. With His Holy Word, written in Scripture and preached

into our ears, He daily proclaims His abiding love for us through all the joys and

sorrows of life in this world. In His Holy Supper, He gives us His own body and blood to

eat and drink as a priceless gift to nourish and strengthen us in both body and soul.

The Lord’s service calls forth our service – in sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving to

Him and in loving service to one another. Having been called, gathered, enlightened,

and sanctified by the Holy Spirit, we receive His gifts with thankfulness and praise. With

psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, we joyfully confess all that God has done for us,

declaring the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.

Our song joins with the song of every saint from every age, the new song of Christ’s

holy people, declaring: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and

wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” (Revelation 5:12)

A NOTE FROM THE BUSINESS OFFICE: For donations to be counted as part of your 2014 giving they must be received as one of the following:

Hand delivered in the church by midnight, December 31, 2014

Mailed with a postmark of December 31, 2014 or earlier

Charged on your credit card (even if not processed) by midnight December 31, 2014

If electronically withdrawn from your account, the day you requested the donation to be made when you set it up, is the day it will be considered received. For example, if you have your contribution set for the 1st of each month, it will be considered received on January 1, 2015. Even though your bank will have processed it earlier, you have chosen the date, not your bank. With a credit card donation, you charge it and have no control when they will process the payment for deposit into Trinity’s account.

As always, thank you for your support of Trinity Lutheran Church, Baton Rouge Lutheran School, and Trinity Lutheran Child Development Center. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Business Office!

SPECIAL NOTE: If you attended the Ladies Christmas Party or the All Trinity Christmas Party and took home a church tablecloth to clean, please return the tablecloth to the church at your earliest convenience. Thank you for cleaning it for us! Also, if you brought food and left containers, they should be located in the kitchen, please pick them up also. THANK YOU!
