Welcome to UpparkAt first glance Uppark may simply appear as a showcase for a fine country house and its beautiful setting. However, beneath the surface are far more complex stories of politics, love, tragedy and triumph.
The current house is built around this time.1690
1995With restoration work complete, Uppark reopens to the public.
1747Uppark purchased by Sir Matthew Fetherstonhaugh.
1811-1814Humphry Repton re-shapes the grounds and updates elements of the house.
1825 Sir Harry Fetherstonhaugh marries Mary Ann, his dairy maid.
1880-1893Sarah Wells, H. G. Wells’ mother, works at Uppark as housekeeper.
1931-1954Lady Meade-Fetherstonhaugh carries out pioneering textiles conservation in the house.

a panoramic view of the South Downs.
• Relax with a hot drink in the café and pop into our well-stocked shop and second-hand bookshop.
A morning/afternoon• Explore the garden shaped by
landscape designer Humphry Repton. Visit the Stables, Game Larder and Gothic Seat, or follow a self-led walk through the grounds.
• See the Servants’ Quarters where HG Wells’ mother was once housekeeper, and walk through the servants’ underground tunnels.
• Delve into Uppark’s history by watching our film about restoring the house after the 1989 fire.

Make a day of it• Visit the house to experience the grand
yet intimate appeal of its Georgian interiors, furnished with purchases from the Grand Tour. Take in the world ‘below stairs’ in the Servants’ Quarters.
• Stretch your legs in our gardens or on one of our self-led walks through the grounds, choosing from the Woodland Walk or South Meadow Walk.
• Break for a homemade lunch in our café and stock up on local products and unusual gifts in the shop.

Finding your way around
What is there to do for families?Pick up one of our family trails in the school holidays, or try our I Spy trail in the house and spot some unexpected details. In the summer, visit the toy box on the South Lawn.
Where can I take my dog?We welcome responsible dog owners and their four-legged friends. Please ensure your dog is kept on a short lead at all times. Water bowls and waste bins are located around the property.You are more than welcome to roam the grounds but we cannot allow dogs into the buildings onsite.
How do I get to the Woodland and South Meadow walks? Explore our two short walks through the grounds. The Woodland Walk begins next to Visitor Reception and the South Meadow Walk starts just beyond the house. See overleaf for our walking routes.

The Woodland WalkA moderate 30 minute walk with a variety of viewpoints through inspiring woodland, carpeted with bluebells in the spring.
Harting Down WalkHarting Down is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a nature reserve which is important for its rare and fragile chalk grassland.
