Planning your day Welcome to Uppark Welcome to Uppark At first glance Uppark may simply appear as a showcase for a fine country house and its beautiful setting. However, beneath the surface are far more complex stories of politics, love, tragedy and triumph. The current house is built around this time. 1690 1995 With restoration work complete, Uppark reopens to the public. 1747 Uppark purchased by Sir Matthew Fetherstonhaugh. 1811-1814 Humphry Repton re-shapes the grounds and updates elements of the house. 1825 Sir Harry Fetherstonhaugh marries Mary Ann, his dairy maid. 1880-1893 Sarah Wells, H. G. Wells’ mother, works at Uppark as housekeeper. 1931-1954 Lady Meade-Fetherstonhaugh carries out pioneering textiles conservation in the house.
