Grade Policy and Philosophy:

90 to 100 = A 80 to 89 = B 70 to 79 = C 60 to 69 = D Less than 60 = F

I will give you what you make I do not grade on Curve. Late assignments usually means lose of points

Page 10: Welcome To: VOED 5513 Hands-On Activities and Observations of Teaching Career Orientation

What should you do to make a good grade (A or B)?

Be in class, There is a positive correlation with being class and making good grades

Follow the directions in the assignments. Turn in all work on Time or ahead of time. If you don’t understand then ASK me……. I strongly encourage you to make a notebook of the

content of this course. Printout the info I post to the web and and take the handouts that are given and keep in the notebook. Some of it may be useful in the near future, if not you have a notebook and all the CO info in one spot when it is time to study for the final.

Page 11: Welcome To: VOED 5513 Hands-On Activities and Observations of Teaching Career Orientation

What should you do to make this class worth while?

Look at it as preparation for teaching. The assignments are based on activities that are realistic expectations for what you will need to do as a teacher of CO. I will ask that you each make copies available to others in the class so that when we are done we all will have resources that will help us make a quick and productive start into teaching.

See this as you boot camp in preparation for the war on Career Ignorance which some of you will begin fighting in a few weeks.

Page 12: Welcome To: VOED 5513 Hands-On Activities and Observations of Teaching Career Orientation

If you are not teaching CO this fall:

Use this class to help you find ways to infuse the CO content into your regular subject.

Look for opportunities to adapt content to your own subject.

Look at the methods and other teaching ideas and how you might use the methods if not the content.

Some people also use this class as a time to reflect on their own career expectations and aspirations….

Page 13: Welcome To: VOED 5513 Hands-On Activities and Observations of Teaching Career Orientation

How I view this class…..

Hands-on activities are different. The creation or adapting of any activity to a CO class requires some thought and planning.

Hands-on activities when done right, are fun and make a point related to careers. CO will be one of the most fun classes you will ever teach. Your students should think positively about careers after having done an HO activity.

You have the best and worst job when you teach CO. It can turn on or turn off a student to a career, just by the HOA you select or the way you conduct the HOA.

Text and other resources needed for this course….

No text is required for this course but there is a text that you should have, (I have a few old copies to loan)

The recommended text for schools was: Your Career Adventure: Exploring and Planning for Tomorrow, Roger LeRoy Miller. West Publishing Company. Most current edition, 2nd . 2000. First one in 1991, second in 94, were required but the 2000 edition is not the required text. There is no one required text. The workbook with this text is very helpful. Teachers should check their local school for a copy of the book.

Additional resources, state publications, access to the web.

The Arkansas Model for Career Education

Two approaches– Infuse into other courses, everyone teach a little.– A stand alone course --The Arkansas Way

Pros and Cons of our model CO is required of every Arkansas Student in

either 7th or 8 th grade, for at least one semester (most schools only do one semester).

Arkansas CO Teacher Certification:

Complete two courses– VOED 4/5533 METHODS OF ORGANIZING AND TEACHING

CAREER ORIENTATION– VOED 4/5513 HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES AND OBSERVATION

EXPERIENCES FOR CAREER ORIENTATION

Page 17: Welcome To: VOED 5513 Hands-On Activities and Observations of Teaching Career Orientation

Where does this course fit with the other course (Methods)?

This is more of where the rubber meets the road kind of course. There is not much theory since the focus is on the practical application of one principle of learning -- learning by doing, using the methods of supervised study, job instruction, and cooperative learning.

This course is narrow in content, where as the other course has the purpose of addressing the scope of the content area.

You can expect there to be some occasional overlap with the other course.

Schedule this Semester:

M-R (Monday thru Thursday at the scheduled time).

I may be away 1 or 2 days Days we have a guest speaker we will need to

work on a common schedule, that will allow overlap for the speaker. (usually 4-6 speakers)

Dates for assignments Dates to return the loaned items

This Mode of Delivery and the Remote locations

How we will need to adapt to allow for participation. Fax assignments Many items such as this slide presentation will be on the

web for you to review or download. Deadlines apply across the board. High level of expectations for teachers to live up to the

highest level of integrity when it comes to completion of one’s work and assignments.

Hands-on Activities can be a challenge when done all together but the distance is going to require extra effort….
