Scafell PikeWe want your day of adventure to be memorable for all the right reasons.
Stay safePlanning and preparation are key whatever the season. Check the mountain forecast, have the right clothing and equipment and know how to use it.
Allow a full day for this hike although the duration will depend entirely on your fitness and mountain conditions. Be prepared to alter your plans if conditions deteriorate. There is good mountain safety advice from Mountain Rescue at www.wmrt.org.uk Walking with your dogPlease follow local and seasonal guidance and keep dogs on leads where livestock are grazing and in the car park. Consider how the weather will affect your dog, and make sure you are properly prepared for their needs. If your dog is not used to the fells, explore a few lower fells before tackling Scafell Pike.
We’re Europe’s largest conservation charity and believe in the importance of nature, beauty and history in people’s lives. We care for over 20 per cent of the Lake District National Park, including England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike; its deepest lake, Wastwater; its precious wildlife; 90 tenanted farms, and the cultural heritage within a dozen historic buildings.
We support 300 jobs in Cumbria and the Lake District, and each year we work with local volunteers, who help us look after one of England’s most inspirational landscapes. The Trust is dependent on the support of its members and the visitors we welcome to our special places each year: every penny we raise in Cumbria is invested in caring for this special place, for ever, for everyone.
About the National Trust
Footpath repair
Next time you stay…
Did you know we also have holiday cottages in the valley?
You can enjoy England’s most spectacular walking routes and all the valley has to offer from the cottage door. We have more cottages across the Lakes and beyond and a new campsite over in Eskdale complete with pods and a camping barn.
Wasdale Hall Lodge (sleeps 4) sits just yards away from the south-western tip of Wastwater, whilst Bowderdale (sleeps 6) sits in an elevated position overlooking the Wasdale Screes.
Welcome to Wasdale Campsite
In 2018, the Ranger team rebuilt the iconic summit cairn on Scafell Pike, England’s highest war memorial, as well as carrying out erosion repair work on the surrounding footpaths.
In all, the Ranger team here in Wasdale helps to look after 40,000 acres of mountain, fell, woodlands and farms. With the help of volunteers, Wasdale is cared for through practical work like repairing dry stone walls and footpaths.
If you see them in their red jackets, feel free to stop, chat and ask any questions that you may have about Wasdale.
Did you know that on the main route up Scafell Pike, it costs £150 to repair one metre of stone pitching? Basic maintenance of this path costs £12,000 per year. Your campsite fees help support projects like these – so thank you for choosing to stay with us.
Working holidays
If you fancy spending a few days working alongside our Rangers, learning new skills and making new friends as well as looking after the spectacular landscape in this area, we run an annual programme of working holidays.
www.nationaltrust.org.uk/holidays
This involves climbing the highest mountains in Scotland (Ben Nevis), Wales (Snowdon) and England (Scafell Pike) often in under 24hrs.
These events can have a negative impact on the mountain environment as well as the local area through erosion, noise, litter and overnight disturbance.
If you are determined to undertake the challenge, then please visit www.threepeakspartnership.co.uk for route guidance, kit list and up to date local information on how to minimise your impact on all three mountains.
Three Peaks Challenge
Maps and compasses are available at the campsite shop as well as the latest mountain weather forecast.
