*Affirmation of Faith from A Brief Statement of Faith(11:00) Sid Hunt

We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Christ Caring for People Through People

The Stephen Ministry mission is “to equip God’s people for the work of ministry” (Ephesians 4:12). In 1975 Dr. Kenneth Haugk, a pastor and clinical psychologist, saw firsthand how the need for congregational care and support extended way beyond what a pastor (or pastors) could provide. God uses Stephen Ministry to change lives, to deepen faith and to provide distinctively Christian care and support to people in churches throughout the world.

Over the last 42 years, more than 600,000 Stephen Ministers representing 12,000 congregations and 170 denominations worldwide have been trained. Stephen Ministry at White Memorial has provided care and support for hundreds of congregation members for 29 years. Today at our 11:00 a.m. worship, we commission 11 Stephen Ministers who have responded to Christ’s call, completing 50 hours of training and committing to serve two years as Stephen Ministers to our congregation. We also commission three Stephen Leaders who have taken Stephen Ministry Leadership Training.

Stephen Ministers to be commissioned: Susan Allen, Jack DeBruyn, Melissa Dombalis, Heather Garrabrant, Raiford Garrabrant, Sue Hane, Carl Hibbert, Toni Hutto, Susan Lewellen, Valerie Pryor and Bill Riddick

Stephen Leaders to be commissioned: Nancy Benninger, Carol Bilbro, Cate Church Norman

and teacher Dr. Ray Vander Laan illustrates how the events of Jesus’ day impacted his life, ministry and communication…and then you’ll learn how it affects yours. Filmed on location in Israel, these Faith Lessons weave together the Bible’s fascinating historical, cultural, religious, and geographical contexts. A structured discussion follows each video lesson. The classes begin after the 8:15 a.m. service and conclude in time for participants to attend the 10:15 a.m. service. Visitors are welcome for all sessions, beginning June 9 and extending through August 11.

DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT RUSSIAN EASTER? From the early 18th century, since the time of Peter the Great, Russia exclusively used the Julian calendar, but by 1900 it was lagging 13 days behind its more modern Gregorian counterpart that was predominantly used in the world. Three months after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1918 Vladimir Lenin introduced the Gregorian calendar to establish a time system similar to most nations. So, Russians went to bed the evening of January 31, 1918 and woke up the next morning on February 14, 1918. Today, the Julian calendar is still used for religious purposes and the Gregorian calendar is used in civic life.

The Bible says that Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection occurred around the time of the Jewish Passover, which was celebrated on the first Full Moon following the vernal equinox. Soon Christians began celebrating Easter on different dates. Russian Orthodox Church Christians continue observing the Julian calendar and will celebrate Easter today, April 28th this year while we celebrated it on April 21st.

Russian Orthodox Easter is also called Pascha and Resurrection Sunday. Pascha normally falls either one to five weeks later than Easter as observed by Christians who follow the Gregorian calendar. It is the oldest and most important celebration in the Eastern Church tradition, celebrating Jesus’ resurrection. Easter in Russia is more than a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a long and powerful tradition that even the Communists couldn’t stop. It brings peace, joy and hope. Like us, the Russians look forward to a family feast with their special Easter foods like Easter bread, a traditional cheese cake called Paskha, Easter eggs, and other treats.

The White Memorial Russia Ministry is planning trips to Russia in 2020. If you are interested in learning more please contact Lydia Pickard at [email protected] for more interesting facts about Russian culture in future bulletins.
