This booklet includes important

information about expectations in

Year 2 in 2016.

This booklet contains important information and expectations in Year 2. It is

important that your child becomes an independent, successful and confident

learner during their time in Year 2. We will do everything we can to fulfil our

responsibilities to help your child to achieve their best. We look forward to

working with you in ensuring that your child settles into Year 2 happily and

comfortably. If you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to come into school

to talk to us.

The Year 2 Team

Introduction

The school uniform is a burgundy sweatshirt/cardigan and a

white polo shirt or shirt/blouse matched with grey trousers or

skirt or dress. Please make sure your child comes to school

wearing their uniform every day.

Shoes should have non-slip soles for safety on outdoor play equipment. Please

encourage your child to learn how to tie their own shoe laces.

Your child will also need the following for PE.

Indoor PE kit: This must be brought into school

on the first day of each new term and will be kept in the classroom, in a PE bag, on your child’s peg. It will be sent home at the end of each term.

Outdoor PE kit: This can be brought in on the

day of your child’s outdoor PE lesson.

A pair of black pumps

Please make sure that all clothes items (coats, uniforms and

PE kits), have your child’s name clearly written inside them.

Lost Property: Lost property is kept at the back of the school hall. If your child

does lose an item of clothing, please speak to their class teacher who will then

arrange for the child to look in the Lost Property box.

Jewellery: No jewellery should be worn in school, particularly earrings, which

are a potential safety hazard.

School Uniform

The school day starts at 8.50am. Each morning, there is a focused

activity for you to complete with your child. This is called Sharing

Time. Each morning, you and your child will complete a different

activity. They are:

Monday Writing Holiday or Weekend News.

Tuesday Reading their independent reading book and writing a book review.

Wednesday Handwriting Practice

Thursday Maths Challenge

It is very important that your child arrives at school on time so that they can

complete these activities. It is also a good opportunity for you to see what your

child is learning in class, how they are progressing and it is also a time when you

can speak to the class teacher.

The School Day

The Year 2 morning begins with English and Maths which is taught every day.

In English, your child will be taught how to:

Read through shared, guided and independent

reading;

Write through shared, guided and independent

writing;

Speak with confidence in small and large groups;

Listen and value the contributions from others.

How you can support your child at home:

Listen to your child read and you read to them;

Help your child to learn the next 200 high frequency words;

Make sure they start sentences with a capital letter and end them with a

full stop;

Remember to spell all known words correctly in their writing;

Use conjunctions (and, because, so and but) in their writing;

Use adjectives (describing words) in their writing to make it interesting

to read;

Plan what they want to write before writing it.

Handwriting

When writing, always encourage your child to form their letters correctly. In

Year 2, we teach the children how to join up their handwriting however, if they

don’t form their letters correctly, they cannot move onto this. Please look in

your child’s homework book for how we form our letters in school and

encourage them to practise these at home when writing their spelling words

and sentences.

When your child can read all of these words, they will win a

prize so please practise reading them at home too.

In Maths, your child will be taught how to:

Solve problems mentally, practically and by recording;

Read and write numbers to 100 and beyond in figures and words;

Add, subtract, multiply and divide;

Collect information and present it in different ways including tally charts

and bar graphs;

Name and describe the properties of 2D and 3D regular and irregular

shapes;

Find right angles on a shape;

Use directional language accurately;

Read the time.

Afternoon Sessions

Every afternoon, the children explore the foundation subjects of the curriculum

through a topic. Every half term the children will acquire and develop a variety

of skills through a theme.

Details of what the children will be learning during each topic will be handed

out at the beginning of each half term. Details are also on the School Blog. On

the Year 2 landing there is a Year 2 Information Board which shows the key

learning objectives for the week.

In Year 2 we will continually assess your child’s progress in class in reading,

writing and maths. Your child will have targets at the front of their English and

Maths book. There is a reading bookmark inside their Reading Record on their

table in a basket which outlines the end of Year 2 expectations that your child

needs to achieve by the end of the year. As your child achieves these, they will

be ticked off in their book or reading book mark. Please look in their book and

bookmark during Sharing Time so that you can see how your child is doing in

class.

At the end of each half term, your child will be formally assessed in Spoken

Language, Reading, Writing, Maths and Science. Their progress is tracked very

carefully to make sure they are achieving their targets. If a child is not making

sufficient progress, they will go to an Intervention Group to give them extra

support. If a child is working well below expectations, they will be given an

Individual Education Plan where they will receive extra support in the specific

area. You will be invited into school to discuss this.

In Year 2 we do not level the children, we state whether they are:

Working at Greater Depth

There are three Parent Meetings during the school year where your child’s class

teacher will inform you of how your child is progressing through the Year 2

expectations and they will give you targets to work on at home to support your

child’s learning. They will also inform you if your child is taking part in any

Intervention Groups.

Assessment in Year 2

Every Friday, your child will take home a reading book, spellings and a maths

activity. All homework should be returned on the Monday of the following

week to give the class teacher sufficient time to mark the homework and

change over the reading books.

Reading

The reading book is the same stage of text that your child is reading in Guided

Reading. There is a Reading Record in their homework bag for you to comment

on how your child has read and understood it.

Spellings

In their homework book there are words that your child has been learning in

Phonics for them to practice spelling and writing in sentences. Always

encourage neat handwriting, starting sentences with a capital letter, ending the

sentence with a full stop and good spelling. The children will be

tested on these words on a Friday.

Maths

In their homework book, there will be a Maths activity based upon what they

have been learning in Maths that week. If your child finds it hard to remember

what they have done or has found the homework challenging, please speak to

their class teacher.

At the end of each half term, we also give the children a topic piece of

homework and a comprehension to do.

You can purchase a school book bag from the school office for £3.

Please make sure your child brings their book bag to school every

day and then they will be able to change their library book and

choose a book from the class reading area daily.

Homework

In Year 2, we plan trips and visitors that link to our topic work.

Below is an overview of trips and visitors for this academic year.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Every term various clubs are run in school. Some are at lunch time and some

are after school. To avoid any disappointment please make sure you return any

club letters to school as soon as possible. We do keep a register of which child

attends which club to try and ensure that the children do have a turn.

Year 2 Assemblies and Production

At the end of each half term, the children in Year 2 take part in a Good Work

Assembly and this is to celebrate their hard work. At these assemblies, children

will be chosen from each class to share their work with the rest of the school

and will receive a certificate. A register is kept to make sure all children receive

praise for their hard work. Every Friday there is a Celebration assembly which

you are invited to. You will see the children being rewarded for hard work and

following our school rules. Finally, there is the end of Year 2 Production which

is always a huge success and delight to watch. The children thoroughly enjoy

taking part in these special events especially performing in front of their parents

and family. So please support them and attend.

Trips and Visitors in Year 2

School Meals

The Government provides a Universal Free School Meal

for every child in our school free of charge. If you wish

your child to have a packed lunch instead of a free school

meal, please inform the school office. If you would like to

change from a free school dinner to a packed lunch or a

packed lunch to a free school dinner, you will need to

speak to the office as soon as possible.

Every day your child will receive a piece of fruit which is free of charge. If your

child would like to have a small carton of milk, the cost of this is £10.00 per term.

Although no payment is required for your child’s school meal, if your child is

entitled to free school meals and milk, it is vital that you still register with

Kirklees in order to claim for your child’s milk payment.

Allergies and Special diets

If your child has an allergy or specific food requirements, please inform the class

teacher.

Water Bottles

Your child will be encouraged to drink water in school. Please make

sure they bring a water bottle to school with their name clearly

marked on. This can be brought in on a Monday and will be taken

home on a Friday.

School Meals

Please enter school through the main entrance and walk on the left hand side

on the stairs.

Please collect your child at the end of the school day (3.10pm) at the

following locations:

2MH: Outside at the bottom of the ramp by the hall

2TR: Through the doors at the back of the hall

2FA: Through the side door in the hall

Please keep referring to the school blog to find out what exciting

If a reading book sent home is lost or damaged, we ask for a £5

contribution to replace it.

Please refrain from taking your child on holiday during term time. This

has a major impact on their learning.
