WELCOME TO YOUR WEEKEND

FRIDAY May 20, 2011

Reunion 2011ALUMNI AND FRIENDSWelcome! It is my pleasure to join you in celebrating a special Reunion 2011. These are exciting times at our University, and it is always a pleasure to see the Clark campus filled with passionate alumni and friends. We have much to enjoy together as a community this weekend.

The opening night dinner on Friday kicks off many great activities. Our featured speaker is Ron Shaich ’76, Founder and Executive Chairman of the board of Panera Bread Company and past Chairman of the Clark University Board of Trustees. He will share his fond memories of Clark and discuss the groundbreaking new program, “Panera Cares,” that he helped to develop. It is a program that resonates with the mission and vision of Clark University.

Reunion 2011 will continue with much food and fun as we remember and celebrate all of the things we love about Clark. From the Alumni Symposia to the parade, class dinners and cocktails, to finishing the weekend with Commencement on Sunday, University Advancement and the alumni class committees have filled the weekend with activities that will give you wonderful new memories of Clark. As much as this University meant to you as a student, we continue to work to ensure that Clark inspires you today.

Again, thank you for being here. Let’s make Reunion 2011 a weekend to remember. Join us in celebrating Clark today.

Sincerely,President David P. Angel

Shortly thereafter, he combined his cookie store operations with a local bakery to cofound Au Bon Pain Co., Inc. In 1993, Shaich led Au Bon Pain’s purchase of a 19-location bakery-café concept called Saint Louis Bread Company, which would become Panera Bread. Today, the Company operates or franchises over 1,400 bakery cafes in 40 states and Ontario, Canada. System-wide sales were in excess of 3 billion in 2010.Under Shaich’s leadership, Panera has been the singularly best performing restaurant stock when measured over the last decade and the second best performing consumer stock in America when measured over that same decade. Today, the company is the 8th largest restaurant company (based on market cap) in the country. In his many years as CEO, Shaich received widespread recognition for his leadership, receiving the International Foodservice Manufacturers Association’s Gold Plate Award as the outstanding leader in the food service industry. As well, Shaich frequently represents Panera Bread on CNBC, Bloomberg, CNN and Fox Business News. The company and Shaich have been featured in Fortune, Forbes, Inc., The Economist, TIME, Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and several books. Shaich also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Lown Cardiovascular Research Foundation and on the Board of the Rashi School. He formerly served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Clark University and is a former Treasurer of the Massachusetts Democratic Party.Shaich received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Clark University in 1976 and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 1978. Ron Shaich began his career in the food industry while still a student at Clark. During his time at Clark, he proposed that the University renovate the first floor of a three-story apartment building and build, stock and operate a general store on campus for students and staff. The store was owned by the University, and staffed and run by students. Mr. Shaich developed the business plan and the Clark University General Store was born and continued to operate for the next 30 years.
