11 –– MMEESSSSAAGGEE FFRROOMM JJEENNNNIIFFEERR Sound Connections Family! Hello awesome, rocking, thriving Unity & NT Music Community! Welcome to issue #42 of Sound Connections. There is a plethora of incredible events unfolding as we generate this September issue. Many churches are gearing up for the World Day of Prayer; the 4th annual Sound Connections Music Conference and New Thought Music Week at

Unity Village are quickly approaching; Rickie Byars Beckwith is presenting her annual Agape music conference in LA; and many of us may already be prepping for the holiday season. I don’t know about you, but all of this cumulative, collective, pro-active energy surrounding and supporting New Thought music leads me directly to a high sense of gratitude, which is fitting since Thanksgiving is right around the corner!

Your Music Ministry Team is very excited to be participating in an ever-evolving process of co-collaborating the Sound Connections E-Newsletter. As we strive to find new & creative ways to share information and connect people within the greater Unity & New Thought music community, we invite you to participate in this process. As Richard mentioned in last month’s opening letter, through the power of co-creation, we can all help Sound Connections stay fresh, interesting and chock full of all the great stories, tips, links and info that help us move forward and take our musical message of love, peace and unity out into the greater community.

As creative musical beings, we are all carving our individual paths to greatness with the help of and by the power of our connection with Spirit. With more exposure, more awareness and more connectivity, we help each other expand and grow, which in turn helps our spiritual communities expand and grow, which then ripples forward and helps everyone we come into contact with expand and grow. It’s a never ending process! The ability to be able to do this through music rocks my world, as I hope it does yours.

So read on, my friends, and join in as we gain momentum and move forward. Sign up for a conference, write an article, step into your greatness and renew your energy in the exciting weeks to come. Together we can make heaven on earth through our collective voices and our beautiful music! Yours in high joy & gratitude, Jennifer Ferren Association Music Ministry Team

When I first came to Unity, and began to learn its theology of oneness, inclusivity and

compassion, I went through my repertoire of spiritual music, and felt I had to dump almost everything and begin anew. It seemed to me that a good 50%-60% of it was all about being a wretched, undeserving person who had to be “washed in the blood” in order to avoid being “cast into outer darkness” and/or hellfire. Much of the rest seemed to be about how it’s okay that life here on earth is full of misery and pain, because “farther along,” if we’ve “followed Jesus,” we’ll all be happy on the “streets of gold” “when the roll is called up yonder,” In other words, we put off our good until after death. After a few years in Unity, however, I felt a need to reclaim some of that music. I began to change words here and there to try to make the old songs fit into my new understanding of God, scripture, and the way the world works. Sometimes it was easily done—like changing “blood was shed” to “love is given,” and “O sinner, come home,” to, “O children come home.” Other times I ended in a morass of confusing language and conflicting theologies and just had to let it go, and move on to another song. After 20 years in Unity, I often find I don’t have to change words in the outer, as my transformed mind perceives the words differently anyway—in other words, I begin to hear things metaphysically without having to translate or change them. When “Jesus” is sung—I automatically hear it as “Christ Spirit”-- alive within all of us. When I hear “Heaven,” I think “higher consciousness.” It doesn’t even bother me (too)much when God is referred to as “He,” since I know absolutely that God is greater than any gender, label or pronoun used to describe God (He, She, It). With this new understanding and a firm intention to impart the true spiritual and emotional message of oneness, our music department put on an entire concert of gospel music last spring, which was received with amazing warmth, enthusiasm and understanding. Actually, it was our best-attended concert ever! Did I change some words? Yes, but not as many as I would have anticipated. Often, I just chose one or two verses that worked for me and stopped there. Sometimes there was a great chorus, and I built an arrangement around that and scrapped the verses altogether. Sometimes a brief spoken intro served to set up the song to be heard with metaphysical ears. Many of the songs were perfect just as they were, without changing a thing. I won’t try to convince you that all gospel music works for us in the New Thought movement, because that’s obviously not true, but I learned some lessons about opening my eyes, ears and mind to new possibilities from old sources. I’ll leave you now with a metaphysical interpretation of a beloved song from my spiritual past, present, and future.

Some Glad morning, when this life is o’er—I’ll fly away (When I release my old ways of thinking and living, I’ll have a new dawn of freedom) To a home on God’s celestial shore—I’ll fly away (Living in the awareness and presence of God, I am home) I’ll fly away, O Glory, I’ll Fly away (My soul takes flight with joy, unencumbered) When I die, Hallelujah, bye and bye—I’ll fly away (When I die to ego, my Spirit lives in eternal freedom) Much love to you, Melinda “Sing to him a new song; strike up with all your skill and shout in triumph, for the word of the Lord holds true, and all his work endure.s” Psalms 33:3-4

JAN GARRETT & J.D. MARTIN Garrett-martin.com

By Carole Tomhave

Jan Garrett and JD Martin are award-winning independent singer-songwriters who live and create their music in the mountains of Colorado. When they met in 1995 they had each been writing, recording, and performing their own music for many years as accomplished solo artists. JD is an acclaimed songwriter of 5 Number One and 10 Top Ten country and pop hit singles. His songs have been recorded by such luminaries as Reba McEntire, Terri Clark, B.J. Thomas, Peter Cetera (from the band Chicago), and the Oak Ridge Boys. A native of Virginia, JD is a deep heart who knows that the music IS the message. He has won over 15 ASCAP awards for excellence in songwriting in Nashville and LA. Jan is a jazz singer, award-winning songwriter, master vocal coach, poet, wilderness vision- quester, meditation student, certified laughing instructor, and mother of identical twin daughters. She has toured with John Denver, Steve Martin and the Dirt Band, and has appeared on the Tonight Show. Hidden talents include: Writing backwards in longhand, and reciting fairy tales inside-out. Jan is also listed in the Rolling Stone “Who’s Who in Rock & Roll” (tiny little print!)

Page 7: Welcome toav.unityonline.org/.../musicMinistry/soundconnections09-08.pdf · Sound Connections Music Conference and ... If you would like a piece of your sheet music offered in

Garrett & Martin’s music is described as “refreshing, rich and intelligent.....a velvet-hammer wake-up call as satisfying to the soul as it is to the ear.....beautifully crafted songs to open the heart and refresh the spirit.” They have each won recent New Thought Songwriter Awards.....Jan in 2006 for "I Dreamed of Rain," and JD in 2007 for "One Heart" (written with Jamie Houston and Wendy Waldman). And they have each been nominated again for this year’s New Thought Songwriters Tribute Awards.

Our congregation was blessed to host Jan and JD this past March for an entire weekend, during which this remarkable duo were featured at a metro-area closing event for Season for Non-Violence, gave a full-length concert, performed a “Sermon in Song” at our worship services, and facilitated a Sunday afternoon workshop! Below is a letter that I sent to Jan and JD after these events.

JD and Jan— What a blessing you were to Unity of Fairfax and the entire metro-DC New Thought community this past week! I have to thank you for the deep peace, strength of vision and healing beauty of your songs and message. Your song “Starting with Me” was the perfect theme for our Season for Non-Violence community event, and “I Shall Not Be Moved” set the tone for the personal commitments to follow.

Your Keynote Concert at our Sunday morning services was perhaps our congregation’s favorite service in the 5 years I’ve served at Unity of Fairfax. Many people have remarked to me how much they liked the format, and how much the music enhanced the hearing of the message. Jan, you are a wise teacher as well as a beautiful singer, and JD, your terrific vocals, incredibly sensitive touch at the piano and humble, deep presence are an experience I would wish for everyone! Using musical harmony as a metaphor for creating harmony in ourselves and our relationships is a great concept, and you present it superbly!

The Sunday workshop was filled with humor, insights and healing for all who attended. The specific combination of Brain Gym exercises, body chewing, and Tai Chi that you implement creates a profound experience of being holistically grounded! I don’t know that I’ve ever felt that perfectly aware of both my body and my spirit simultaneously--the effect lasted for two entire days afterwards!

In deepest gratitude, and with many blessings to you both,

Carole Tomhave

"""TTThhheee AAAnnnssswwweeerrr""" by Eddie Watkins, Jr, Reviewed by Sue K Riley This CD will have you dancing from the first note of the very first song. Strongly rhythmic, with catchy melodies, and grooving bass lines, "The Answer" will be a blessing to your church music

ministry. Although some of the songs might be a little difficult to perform unless you have a house band, the catchy melodies and toe tapping rhythms will have you singing your way down the highway with a smile on your face. Among my favorites is "All is Well", which is an upbeat affirmation about living in the present moment. Great harmonies and great rhythms make this song easily accessible. I also love the title track "The Answer" which proclaims that "God is the answer to whatever the question may be". It is a funky musical answer to our question of what God's will is in our lives. Eddie goes on to admonish us to "Get out of the way, and let God do His thing" in his Posi Award Nominated song “Get Out of the Way. In fact, many of the songs on this CD remind us that God has a plan for each of us and those plans are good! Eddie is a strong talent, with a great voice, and he shows an incredible mastery of bass and guitar. He's like a favorite uncle dispensing friendly advice you can dance to. Full of great songs to listen to and perform, this CD is a must have for your ministry. Listen to this and Eddie’s Newest release, We Come Together at www.eddiewatkinsjr.com

ASK REV. BLAIR – PRAYER REQUESTS AND ADVICE Dear Rev Blair, I am currently an interim music director at a small Unity church. When I came on board, there was already a standing volunteer musician that was coming and playing every Sunday. Aside from me playing keys, he is the only other musician, so often it just the 2 of us. We do approximately 6 songs throughout the service, which includes 2 solo spots. He is doing his best, and again is a great guy, but often stumbles noticeably, which ends up throwing me off-balance for the performances. There is no extra time in the week for an additional rehearsal, but we do go over music for about 30 minutes before prelude starts before service. During these run-throughs he appears to pick the songs right up. It's just during the actual live performances that he is strongly stumbling. Charts are always provided, so he has music to refer to. I am grateful for having another musician and am all about the music department growing. I also want the best possible performances so the music is professional and will have maximum impact. What is the best, most loving way to approach this situation. Thanks! (writer wishes to remain anonymous) Dear Interim Music Director,

There are a couple of approaches I invite to you consider. It is important to be clear about what is the purpose of the music program. Make an appointment with the minister and come up with a purpose statement for how the music is to support the Sunday service.

Make an appointment with your volunteer (other than Sunday morning) and go over the purpose statement. Ask this person how he sees himself supporting this purpose. Mention that you have noticed that during rehearsal he seems to pick up the music right away and compliment him on that. Mention that you notice that during the service he seems to lose focus, which creates challenges for you. Then ask him about the difference for him between rehearsal and performance. It may be stage fright or simply being distracted by the congregation or the elements of the service.

The two of you may just need to create some other times to play together to deepen a sense of being an ensemble.

I do not know your history with our Unity approach. So, here is another invitation. Frame each of the above activities with prayer. Before you call the minister for an appointment, take a few moments to invite Divine inspiration and Divine love to guide the conversation. As you meet with the minister, ask to begin with prayer. Before you call your volunteer, take time for prayer and open your sessions with him with prayer. (Take time to prayer on Sundays, too, before you rehearse.)

After you move through this situation, make a time with the minister and your volunteer (and maybe others from the church) to create a vision statement for the music program. What does God want to create through you as a vibrant, uplifting, transformation music experience?

Blessings! Joyous in the Spirit, Rev. Blair Tabor Music Ministry Team ******************************************************************************************************************* Rev. Blair, These are beautiful thoughts. I can use them in my music ministry also. As a practical matter, it may be good to give the volunteer the music two weeks ahead of time. Then maybe they could go over future music either before or after the service. At our church we begin complete our rehearsal and begin quiet time 30 minutes before the service. In a way the musicians playing for a small church have the same size audience as those in a large church, because each listener is only one person and is reached with the music individually. COPYRIGHT Q&A WITH TODD LOWRY

Hey Todd, I have a question for one of our Sound Connections presenters who wants to make handouts for his Keyboard Lab class. Harry wants to make sure that it is ok for him to copy some pages from books that he has purchased and plans to use in his class. He will be including a syllabus of the Book/author/publisher, where to purchase the book and how much it is. He'll also be using the books in his presentation. Being that he has purchased the books, he's using it for educational purpose (in a church setting for a 501c3) and is promoting the sale of the book in the Labs, is there permission that needs to be gotten to copy some pages from the book for handouts or is it enough just to credit the book and author? The participants of course have paid a conference fee to attend the class and we are giving Harry a fee for teaching it. Would there a limit to the number of pages he would be allowed to copy without permission? RM Hello Richard and Harry: Without seeing the actual copies, it sounds like the use is "fair use." "Fair use" is generally the right to use portions of copyrighted materials for purposes of education, commentary or parody. Whether a use is "Fair use" depends on several factors including the purpose and character of the use, the amount and substantiality of the portion taken, and the effect of the use upon the potential market for the original. Here, the purpose of the use is educational in the context of a non-profit organization. The effect of the use on the market for the original seems nil, and, in fact, you are promoting the original and may actually induce sales. Therefore, the biggest question seems to be the amount taken. Generally, for a piece of printed music, you can copy 10%, as long as the excerpt is not a "performable unit." Generally, you want to avoid more than two excerpts per author. And most guidelines say don't take more than one chart, graph or diagram per book. However, these guidelines are not set in stone. If you go to www.copyright.gov/circs, you can download Circular 21 which is a Copyright Office Circular on educational fair use. But like most things in copyright law, the guidelines are rather nebulous. Todd Lowry

READER APPRECIATION Dear Richard, First off, I'd like to introduce myself to you. I'm Todd Jackson, music director for Unity NW in Des Plaines, IL. Secondly, I'd like to thank you for ALL you do relating to New Thought music: your compositions, organization, and facilitation of this wealth of beauty to us, the end-users. It really helps to have all this material so easily available. I'm sure you can put yourself in our position and appreciate the value. Many, many thanks. Light and Love, Todd Jackson [email protected] Victories? Concerns? Need to find a piece of music for a certain occasion or topic? Copyright, A/V, or choral challenges? Ask your question(s). It will be put out to our “experts in the field” and answered in our next edition of SOUND CONNECTIONS.
