WELCOME TO OUR CHURCH COMMUNITY We are glad you chose to worship with us today. This bulletin will guide you through

our worship service. Additional information can be found in the pamphlet holder at the back of the sanctuary. Please fill out the information card in the chair pocket and place it in the offering plate so that we may know of your visit. We invite you to join us for coffee & refreshments following the service so that we may welcome you personally.

PARKING As our special accommodation only lasts from 9AM to noon, if you park on the opposite

side of North Willow, please remember to move your car by that time. Parking is NOT allowed in any “Permit Only” spots. Parking is allowed in metered spots, which are free on Sundays. Non-metered street parking is allowed as posted, but not within four feet of driveways or 50 feet of stop signs. Please see RedeemerMontclair.com/parking for more details.

VISITORS WITH CHILDREN We have children’s ministry for infants through 4th grade during the service. Pre-K through

4th grade begin in the worship service with adults and are dismissed just prior to the sermon. Bulletins for children are available on the table in the back of the sanctuary to use

during the worship service. Activity Bags are located in a basket on the bottom shelf of the table that include paper and crayons. Blank drawing paper is also available in the same location. Feel free to pick up a bulletin and/or an activity bag at the beginning of the worship service. Please return the activity bags when you are done.

OUR PURPOSE Redeemer Montclair aims to be a community centered on and propelled by the gospel of

Jesus Christ to serve Montclair and the surrounding communities in word and deed.

This symbol, which is called a TRIQUETRA from the Latin word meaning “three cornere d,” was used by the early church to represent the Trinity. The three interwoven areas are equal in size, and each can be distinguished from the other two but cannot be separated without destroying the figure. This symbolizes that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are three persons of equal power, honor, and glory but are indivisibly one God.

Redeemer Montclair is a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America. We have strong ties to the Redeemer Presbyterian Church of New York City.

REFLECTIONS God receives none but those who are forsaken, restores health to none but those

who are sick, gives sight to none but the blind, and life to none but the dead. He does not give saintliness to any but sinners, nor wisdom to any but fools. In short: He has mercy on none but the wretched and gives grace to none but those who are in disgrace.

—Martin Luther

When through the blood of the everlasting covenant we children of the shadows reach at last our home in the light, we shall have a thousand strings to our harps, but the sweetest may well be the one tuned to sound forth most perfectly the mercy of God.

—A.W. Tozer

affirmation

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH — Heidelberg Catechism, Question 1

Q: What is your only comfort in life and death?

A: That I am not my own, but belong— body and soul, in life and in death— to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven: in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy and merciful God, In your presence we confess our sinfulness, our shortcomings, and our

offenses against you. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love. Have mercy on us, O Lord, for we are ashamed and sorry for all we have done to displease you. Forgive our sins, and help us to live in your light and walk in your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior, Amen.

PRIVATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

RECEIVING OF GRACE — Micah 7:18-19

18 Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. 19 You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.

Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God!

GRACE GREATER THAN OUR SIN

Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt!Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured,There where the blood of the Lamb was spilled.

Chorus: Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that will pardon and cleanse within; Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that is greater than all our sin.

Sin and despair, like the sea waves cold,Threaten the soul with infinite loss;Grace that is greater, yes, grace untold,Points to the refuge, the mighty cross.

(Chorus)

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide. What can avail to wash it away?Look! There is flowing a crimson tide,Brighter than snow you may be today.

(Chorus)

Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,Freely bestowed on all who believe! You that are longing to see His face,Will you this moment His grace receive?

(Chorus)

WELCOME AND COMMUNITY LIFE NEW TESTAMENT READING — John 10: 11-18, Rev. Brad Bissell

11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

PASTORAL PRAYER — Rev. Daniel Ying (followed by the Lord’s Prayer) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

SERMON TEXT — 2 Samuel 24:1-25

Again the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, “Go and take a census of Israel and Judah.” 2 So the king said to Joab and the army commanders with him, “Go throughout the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beersheba and enroll the fighting men, so that I may know how many there are.” 3 But Joab replied to the king, “May the LORD your God mul-tiply the troops a hundred times over, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?” 4 The king’s word, however, overruled Joab and the army commanders; so they left the presence of the king to enroll the fighting men of Israel. 5 After crossing the Jordan, they camped near Aroer, south of the town in the gorge, and then went through Gad and on to Jazer. 6 They went to Gilead and the region of Tahtim Hodshi, and on to Dan Jaan and around toward Sidon. 7 Then they went toward the fortress of Tyre and all the towns of the Hivites and Canaanites. Finally, they went on to Beersheba in the Negev of Judah. 8 After they had gone through the entire land, they came back to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. 9 Joab reported the number of the fighting men to the king: In Israel there were eight hundred thousand able-bodied men who could handle a sword, and in Judah five hundred thousand.

10 David was conscience-stricken after he had counted the fighting men, and he said to the LORD, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, LORD, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.” 11 Before David got up the next morning, the word of the LORD had come to Gad the prophet, David’s seer: 12 “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the LORD says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’” 13 So Gad went to David and said to him, “Shall there come on you three years of famine in your land? Or three months of fleeing from your enemies while they pursue you? Or three days of plague in your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should answer the one who sent me.” 14 David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the LORD, for his mercy is great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”

15 So the LORD sent a plague on Israel from that morning until the end of the time designated, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beersheba died. 16 When the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the LORD relented concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was afflicting the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the LORD was then at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 17 When David saw the angel who was striking down the people, he said to the LORD, “I have sinned; I, the shep-herd, have done wrong. These are but sheep. What have they done? Let your hand fall on me and my family.”

18 On that day Gad went to David and said to him, “Go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” 19 So David went up, as the LORD had commanded through Gad. 20 When Araunah looked and saw the king and his officials coming toward him, he went out and bowed down before the king with his face to the ground. 21 Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” “To buy your threshing floor,” David answered, “so I can build an altar to the LORD, that the plague on the people may be stopped.” 22 Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take whatever he wishes and offer it up. Here are oxen for the burnt offering, and here are threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood. 23 Your Majesty, Araunah gives all this to the king.” Araunah also said to him, “May the LORD your God accept you.” 24 But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels of silver for them. 25 David built an altar to the LORD there and sacrificed burnt offer-ings and fellowship offerings. Then the LORD answered his prayer in behalf of the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped.
