welcomeI
t gives me great pleasure to welcome
you to the 2nd annual Lighthouse Inter-
national Film Festival! Building on last
year’s successful launch, it has been exciting to
watch the festival grow so quickly. We received
over twice as many film submissions this year.
In addition, our programmers scouted films at
festivals far and wide, from Sundance, Berlin,
South-by-Southwest, Toronto, Tribeca and
Cannes, to bring together over 50 of the best
and most thought-provoking features, docu-
mentaries and shorts from around the world.
In particular, we are especially proud to screen
“Offside”, the latest stunning film from Iranian
filmmaker Jafar Panahi. In March of this year,
Panahi was arrested by Iranian authorities
who objected to the messages in his films, in
this case a documentary-style film that ex-
plores why women are banned from attending
soccer matches in Iran. Panahi is still in prison
to this day, and it is unclear when, if ever, he
will resume his position as one of the world’s
most respected and talented filmmakers. I en-
courage you to join us for a discussion following
the film, as we learn more about the challenges
facing filmmakers in that region.
Our festival is also dedicated to exploring
issues facing our community right here on
LBI, such as the challenges of balancing
environmental and wildlife concerns with the
serious challenges facing our fishing industry.
Last year we began that discussion with “The
End of the Line” a passionate plea to protect
our oceans against overfishing. This year we’re
proud to continue that discussion with two
films that take a look at how fisherman across
the country are struggling to make ends meet
in light of new fishing regulations. We plan to
continue to engage on these important issues
in the years to come.
And we’re excited to announce the launch of a
year-round Lighthouse Film Society that will
supplement our annual film festival. The film
society will feature a number of screenings
throughout the year, and we’re excited to kick
off with a screening of “Greetings from the
Shore” on July 4th weekend, with the filmmak-
ers in attendance to participate in a Q&A.
On behalf of the hundreds of volunteers who
have been working year-round to make this fes-
tival possible, we thank you from the bottom of
our hearts for your generous support, and we
hope you enjoy the show!

he might prefer a relationship with Joanna because she’s a
selfless social worker who doesn’t have lip acne. Eventually,
Wendell is going to have to decide who he really belongs
with: the best girl he’s ever known—or the worst.
