From your Course Leader
Welcome to BA (Hons) Illustration. In this pack you will find all the information you need to help you settle into your studies at UCA Farnham this September. We are confident you will have a great time on the course, make new friends and enjoy the challenges and rewards the course will offer you.
We’ve enclosed a summer project brief for you to complete, and a list of materials that you will find useful. We’ve also given you a list of interesting reading material. Don’t feel you have to rush out and buy them all - just have a look at as many as you can.
Illustration students will benefit from numerous resources such a first class printmaking studio, digital technology area, mediastores, Mac digital suites and bookmaking/arts.
The first year of the course will be an introduction to the essential skills and knowledge needed to establish your practice. You will experience a range of drawing methods and techniques, undertake an exploration of processes and materials across different media, cover studio methodologies and skills development, and study history of art, culture and theory.
I wish you all the best for the summer break and look forward to welcoming you in September.
Best regards
Jane Cradock-WatsonCourse Leader, BA (Hons) Illustration

Summer project
Task
Whether you decide to sail the seven seas, go backpacking in the Himalayas, or just stay at home to save up money, your summer project is to complete a sketchbook as a visual documentation of the people, places and events you encounter this summer.
Requirements
• Use an A5 sketchbook of your choosing, NOT spiral bound.
• Your drawings must be largely from life, however you may also draw from memory or imagination as long as it has some relationship to your actual experiences.
• Use whatever media and processes you like. You may decide to draw, paint, collage, cut and paste, use found objects, or combine a number of approaches.
• This is a purely visual exercise and you have complete freedom of expression.
• Be bold, be experimental and most of all have fun!
Deadline
The work made during this task will be required for your project in the first few weeks of term.

Visits
In the past, the course has made overseas trips to Paris and New York. Students must pay for these visits themselves. The Paris trip cost £270 for travel and hotel, and the New York trip £650 for travel and hotel. Field trips within the country are usually free. Each student year cohort will have one free trip per year, which might involve travelling up to London for an exhibition or going on location drawing.
