April 7, 2019 RCIA–Rite of Welcome for a New Candidate At the 10AM Mass last week, Fr. Sean cele-brated the Rite of Welcome for our new Candidate, CHRISTIAN ASTLE. Christian now joins our other candidates, Laurie Wright and Kimberly Kilpatrick in the RCIA program. If you attend the 5PM or 10AM Masses, you will see them dismissed after the homily to learn about our faith and beliefs, and how this is in-tegrated into our daily lives as Catholics. Remember, as a faith family we are connected to these candidates. They will need our support, en-couragement, and prayers on the journey to full initia-tion into the Catholic faith. Please say a special prayer now and as their RCIA preparations continue over the months ahead. Would you or someone you know want to join Chris, Laurie, and Kimberly? As Candidates they will hear the great story of Jesus, participate in parish activ-ities, and learn about His transformative message from other parishioners. We invite you to call the Parish Of-fice at 908-647-1075 to be put in touch with a member of the RCIA team. Have a question for yourself of a family member? Make the call! You can also visit the OLM website for more information on the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. http://olmwarren.org/rite-of-christian-initiation-of-adults Fr. Sean: Christian, what do you ask of God? Christian: I ask that God continue to bless those around me, my wife and our four beautiful children. I ask that God continue to provide me with clarity and a soft heart.
Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ, I know you will agree that among our greatest assets in this diocese is our faithful priests. The Diocese of Metuchen currently has 29 retired diocesan priests. Just imagine how many masses, baptisms, and confes-sions we have celebrated with
them. They have blessed us, mourned with us, and min-istered to us throughout our lives. Because they devoted their lives to the services of God and the Diocese of Metuchen we have been the recipients of their sacra-mental and pastoral care. Wherever I go on parish visits, I hear about and can sense your great love for our priests. As I think back on my own life, I see my own faith has been remarkably shaped by the priests who ministered to me and my family while growing up. Good and faithful priests bring joy to the Church. For the majority of diocesan priests, retirement at the age of 75 may end administrative responsibilities, but not their priestly ministry. In a number of parishes, our retired priests continue to celebrate Mass and assist with the Sacrament of Reconciliation. They bring Christ’s love to the sick and serve as spiritual leaders, counse-lors, and teachers, giving freely of their time to assist our active priests. The retired priests, who for health rea-sons cannot minister in the parishes, also continue to support the people of God through their prayers and ex-ample. Next weekend, April 13 and 14, the faithful of our dio-cese will have the opportunity to gratefully acknowledge those priests who have faithfully served our diocese by responding to the Annual Collection for our Retired Diocesan Priests. This collection assists our elderly priests by helping to provide them with a monthly pen-sion. It also subsidizes the operation of the Maria Regina Residence where 10 of our retired priests are currently living. Your generous response to next week’s special collec-tion is a practical way to convey your personal apprecia-tion to our retired priests for their many years of service as well as make it possible for us to continue to properly care for them. Please keep all of our priests in your daily prayers. We depend on your prayerful support in order to accomplish the work of the Gospel in our challenging times. With renewed best wishes, I remain Yours in Christ, Most Reverend James F. Checchio, JCD, MBA Bishop of Metuchen

On Monday, April 15, 2019 Bishop James F. Chec-chio will celebrate the Chrism Mass with the priests of the Diocese. At this Mass, the Bishop will bless the Holy Oils which each parish receives for the rites of anointing. Saint Ambrose [340-397] began this cus-tom-which we now call the Chrism Mass-in his Cathe-dral in Milan. These Holy Oils, which are used to sanctify the Faithful, have been channels of holiness for centuries! The Oil of Catechumens is used to anoint infants and adults before their Baptism; the Oil of the Sick is used on the forehead and hands of the infirm in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; and Sacred Chrism is used to anoint the head of the newly baptized, the foreheads of confirmandi, the hands of a priest at his ordination, the head of a bishop at his ordination, and the altar and walls of new churches. At the Mass, all priests make a Renewal of Commitment to Priestly Service, recommitting them-selves to their Bishop and to their ministry to God and His People; the Bishop and all Priests then ask the people for a pledge of their prayerful support. All are strongly encouraged to join in the ancient, grace-filled Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi in Metuchen at 4:00 PM.
