A midweek Moonee Valley deluge
will not dampen enthusiasm for
tonight’s Australia Stakes (Gr
2, 1200m), which is the most
interesting edition of the race since Black
Caviar (Bel Esprit) won it in 2012.
The return of Hey Doc (Duporth),
Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie) and
Microphone (Exceed And Excel) in particular
highlight the depth of this autumn make-
or-break preliminary, which is likely to be
run on a Good 4 surface despite more than
20 millimetres of rain hitting the track on
Wednesday night. Continued on page 2>>

Hey Doc’s proposed Dubai campaign;
Begood Toya Mother’s mooted weight-for-age itinerary and Microphone’s
immediate programme will hinge on their performances in the first Group
2 sprint of the new year.
The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Hey Doc has not appeared since
winning the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on November 30, which
was just his second run in 14 months after surgery to remove bone chips.
However, Tony McEvoy believes the gelding is as close to ready as he can
be following the let-up.
"Two months between runs with a big, heavy horse like him, it's very
hard to keep him right up to the mark so he hasn't been screwed down
tight for this but he's pretty close. He’ll be there to win,” McEvoy said.
A strong performance in the Australia Stakes will see Hey Doc progress
to the CF Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on February 8 before the
trek to Dubai for the $US2 million Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) - won
by Ortensia (Testa Rossa) in 2012 and Buffering (Mossman) in 2016 - at
Meydan on Dubai World Cup night (March 28).
"Dubai is definitely on the
cards. It’s been on the table for
some time and while it’s a little
way off we’re excited about going
there,” McEvoy said.
Hey Doc and stablemate
Manuel (Commands), who also
resumes tonight, galloped on
Monday at Moonee Valley, as
did Godolphin’s Microphone
and the Danny O’Brien-trained
Embrace Me (Shamexpress),
who is the lone mare in the race.
“He was great on Monday morning,” McEvoy said of Hey Doc,
who’s won three of his four starts at Moonee Valley. “He was stimulated
by being there again, he really likes the Valley and I was pleased with
his work.”
Hey Doc worked over 1000 metres in
1.05.05, running the last 400 metres in 23.94,
which was marginally slower than Manuel’s
closing sectional of 23.87 in a 1.06.32 workout
over the same distance.
“Manuel’s a bit above himself but he
galloped well Monday morning. This is the path
we took him on when he won the Orr last year
so he’ll go on to the Orr and then the Futurity,”
McEvoy added.
Manuel was trapped three wide on the
speed when seventh in last year’s Australia
Stakes before leading throughout in the Orr
Stakes.
The Orr Sakes is also the likely next step
for the emerging star Begood Toya Mother
who scored a breakthrough elite-level win,
with 52 kilograms under handicap conditions,
in last spring’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1,
1400m).

“You’d hope he can make that jump to
weight-for-age,” said trainer Daniel Bowman. “He looks bigger and better
this time in. He’s improved physically and in his work and he’s only had 13
starts so there is room for improvement you’d think.”
The Warrnambool-based Bowman said he would have been happy to
see more rain.
“If the track is soft I think he can win but on a Good 3 or a Good 4
horses like Hey Doc might be a bit sharp for him at 1200 metres,” he said.
James Winks picks up the ride on Begood Toya Mother as regular
rider Declan Bates only returned from a ten-week, injury enforced lay-off
earlier this week.
“We just weren’t sure on the timeline with Declan’s recovery and had
to lock a rider in. James is a really good jockey who’s won seven Group 1s
and he was more than happy to come and trial and gallop him,” Bowman
said.
The James Cummings-trained Microphone resumes after bypassing the
Kensington Stakes (Listed, 1000m) last Saturday when disadvantaged by the
weight conditions of that race. The
ATC Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr 1,
1400m) winner galloped over 1000
metres on Monday in 1.06.62 (last
400m in 24.59).
Microphone excelled during
his juvenile season, winning four
of his six starts including the
Sires’ Produce, in which he beat
subsequent Manikato Stakes (Gr
1, 1200m) winner Loving Gaby
(I Am Invincible). That followed
his second in the Golden Slipper
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) to stablemate Kiamichi (Sidestep).
Track specialist Embrace Me contests the race after one lead-in run
and O’Brien says her liking for the course can see her be competitive.
“It (Moonee Valley) sets up well for her when the rail is true - she can
be out the back early and then really be strong
late. That’s the way it should race on Friday
night. She seems to really appreciate it (the
surface),” O’Brien said.
The Anthony Freedman-trained
Ringerdingding (Sebring) resumes and has
finished powerfully to be placed on his only two
previous starts at the course and distance.
“He’s run well before over 1200 metres at
the Valley and this will give us a guide on where
we head with him,” Freedman's racing manager
Brad Taylor said.
The Lindsey Smith-trained Scales Of Justice
(Not A Single Doubt), last spring’s Memsie
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner, is the other key
runner who resumes in tonight’s race.
All gate takings from the night will be
donated to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal and
free entry is offered to all emergency services
personnel.

High-priced colts set for debutCo-trainer Peter Snowden is looking forward to
seeing two colts who fetched a combined total of
almost $4 million at the sales make their debuts
in the opening race at Randwick tomorrow.
Snowden and his son Paul will saddle up Mount
Fuji (Snitzel), a $2.8 million Inglis Australian
Easter Yearling Sale buy, and $900,000 Magic
Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase
Rulership (I Am Invincible). Rulership extended
nicely to win his latest barrier trial, accounting
for recent Canterbury winner Prague (Redoute’s
Choice), while Mount Fuji showed plenty of
ability when he closed strongly for second on his
only trial. "Mount Fuji has always worked really
well but had an inclination to go very hard in his
work," Snowden said. "We've worked a lot on that,
getting him to settle, so my heart was in my mouth
a bit seeing how he reacted at the trials and going
away from home. He was beautiful before the
trial, he jumped nice and quiet and relaxed very
well.” On track work, Snowden cannot separate
the pair but he suspects Rulership might have
a slight edge on Saturday given his extra trial
experience. "He's probably bit more race savvy
than Mount Fuji but in their work there's nothing
between them,” Snowden added.
O'Dea hoping for change of luck in Cup
Scallopini (Snitzel) looks to have been ideally
placed by Steve O'Dea as the five-year-old attempts
to make amends for a luckless run last time out
when he lines up in tomorrow’s Sunshine Coast
Cup (Listed, 1400m). The gelding finished eighth
in the Magic Millions Snippets (1200m) after being
badly hampered when Champagne Cuddles (Not
A Single Doubt) broke down. He drops in weight to
54.5 kilograms and will start from barrier five with
conditions appearing favourable. "He has won three
times at 1400 metres and missed a place only once
at the distance. He is also unbeaten in three starts on
soft tracks," O'Dea said.
Cummings optimistic about outsider FayerraAnthony Cummings believes Fayerra (Valentia)
can outrun her odds when she takes on a smart
field of youngsters in tomorrow's $2 million
Inglis Millennium In 14 Days Handicap (1000m).
The filly is also entered for a 1200-metre race at
Newcastle but Cummings is favouring Randwick
as a better stepping stone into the Inglis
Millennium (RL, 1200m) at Warwick Farm early
next month. "There is no doubt she will be better
at 1200 but when I do that, I'd prefer to be in a $2
million race in a couple of weeks," Cummings
said. Fayerra got going late to finish fourth in a
1000-metre Gosford maiden on debut and has
shown ability at home. She is the outsider of the
field at $71 but Cummings is unperturbed by the
price. "Her work since has been sharp and she's
well within herself so I think we go there with
some expectation," he added.

Boom Spender makes winning debutDesleigh Forster's decision to run Boom
Spender (Spirit Of Boom) at Doomben
yesterday as opposed to letting the gelding
take his chance in tomorrow's Sunshine Coast
Classic (1200m) reaped dividends when he
made as successful debut. "It has been very
hot and while I think he would have been up
to Saturday's race this was better for his first
start," Forster said. "It is five minutes from
home to Doomben and it can be two hours to
Caloundra." Boom Spender bounced to the
lead and beat Tramonto (Wandjina) by a head
in the QTIS Two-Year-Old Handicap (1200m).
"He won a jump-out leading and he led again
today,” Forster continued. “But I think he will
be better when he can settle in his races." Boom
Spender is likely to chase the $500,000 QTIS
Jewel (1200m) at the Gold Coast in March.
Happy Clapper pleases in barrier trial
Three-time Group 1 winner Happy Clapper
(Teofilo) is on course for a return in next month’s
Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) after finishing fourth
in a barrier trial at Randwick yesterday. Happy
Clapper worked to the line in the 900 metre-
heat on the course proper, pleasing trainer Pat
Webster with his effort and his recovery. "Happy
Clapper will have another trial over 1200 metres
on February 6 and then go to the Apollo nine days
later," Webster said. "He will have a much harder
trial and that should have him right for the Apollo.
He only had about three weeks spelling but it is
still good to see he is enjoying it. It's exciting to
think he is coming back."
Winx’s Snitzel sister unlikely to raceSuperstar mare Winx’s (Street Cry) three-year-
old half-sister Courchevel (Snitzel) is unlikely
to make it to the racetrack, breeder John
Camilleri has announced. Racing.com reports
that Courchevel has left the Melbourne stables
of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and is now
in Sydney where she will be re-assessed. If she
fails to make it onto the racetrack, Courchevel
will become the fourth foal out of Vegas
Showgirl (Al Akbar) unable to race, following
Miss Atom Bomb (Encostsa De Lago), Win
Win Leader (Fastnet Rock) and Boulder City
(Snitzel). Boulder City has, however, forged
a career as a stallion, He stands at Riverbank
Farm near Benalla, where he served 90 mares
at a fee of $5,500 during his first season and a
further 60 mares at the same fee last season.
Williams and Oliver to head metro teamCraig Williams and Damien Oliver will head a
team of metropolitan jockeys competing against
a country side at a twilight meeting at Flemington.
The meeting on February 9 will feature two teams
of seven with all races on the straight course. The
Victoria Racing Club has dubbed the Sunday
meeting “Rapid Racing” with the seven events
run at 30 minute intervals. Along with Williams
and Oliver, the metropolitan team comprises
Dwayne Dunn, Ben Melham, Linda Meech, Mark
Zahra and Luke Currie. Harry Coffey, Jye McNeil,
Daniel Stackhouse, Damien Thornton, Jarrod
Fry, Dean Holland, and Jason Maskiell form the
country team. The first four placegetters in each
race will receive points with double points on
offer in the final race. All gate takings on the day
will be donated to the Bushfire Disaster Appeal.
Nine Sydney races rank in world's top 100The Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)
remains the highest-rated race in Australia and
equal sixth best in the world following the latest
rankings at the World's Best Race and Racehorse
awards. The Queen Elizabeth was among nine
Sydney races ranked in the world's top 100
at the international awards ceremony. Also
making the cut was the Chipping Norton Stakes
(Gr 1, 1600m) , T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m),
Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), Golden Rose (Gr
1, 1400m), George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m),
George Main Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), Ranvet
Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and the Winx Stakes (Gr 1,
1400m). Australian Turf Club general manager
of racing, wagering and international James
Ross said the ratings showed Australian racing
was strong. "These international race ratings
continue to demonstrate the great strength and
depth of Sydney's world-class racing across a
range of distances," Ross said.

Ballarat meeting switched to Warrnambool Ballarat's meeting scheduled to take place on
February 4 has been transferred to Warrnambool
as the club's turf continues to recover from its
track renovation. The track underwent renovation
after the Ballarat Cup meeting in November, with
drainage works including sand slitting and sand
bagging completed. However, some sections have
yet to meet expectations, leading Racing Victoria
and Ballarat Turf Club to announce the switch.
The Benchmark 58 handicap will now be run
over 1600 metres (from 1700m). All other race
distances will remain unchanged.

Bosson hungry for further Karaka successOpie Bosson will seek a fourth consecutive
success in the Karaka Million 2YO (RL, 1200m)
when he partners last-start Tauranga winner
Cool Aza Beel (Savabeel) at Ellerslie tomorrow.
The leading rider also holds a strong hand in
the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (RL, 1600m)
courtesy of Probabeel (Savabeel), who landed
the $1 million juvenile contest last year, following
in the footsteps of fellow Te Akau Racing-owned
stars Avantage (Fastnet Rock) and Melody Belle
(Commands). "He's come through his Tauranga
win really well. He looks outstanding,” Bosson
said of Cool Aza Beel. "He was quite impressive
there - he gave me a really good feel. I liked the
way he relaxed and the last 600 metres of his
race were top-notch.” Regarding Probabeel, who
won an Awapuni handicap on January 4, Bosson
added: "It was a very good run and there was
heaps of improvement in her. I galloped her on
Monday at Ellerslie and her work was pretty good.
She's not a great track-worker because she's so
laid back, but she's going well. She looks good
and feels good and she'll be a good chance again."
Levante on trial for bigger thingsThe Ken and Bev Kelso-trained Levante (Proisir)
will put her unbeaten record on the line and test
the water for a tilt at stakes company when she
lines up over 1400 metres at Te Aroha today. The
three-year-old has been highly impressive in her
two victories so far, producing scintillating finishes
from the back of the field to win at Matamata on
December 6 and again on December 28. “She’s
been pretty impressive in both starts so far and
has shown a lot of ability,” Ken Kelso said. “We’re
very happy with her heading into this race. Her
work has been very good, she’s eating well and
continuing to thrive. We thought about running
her in the Mr Tiz Trophy at Ellerslie on Saturday,
but decided to take a softer option this week. It
should be a nice race for her.” Looking ahead,
Kelso added: “If she runs well again we’ll look at
stepping up to black-type level for her next start.
That will probably be in the Mufhasa Stakes at
Ellerslie on February 29. We’re taking things one
race at a time with her, but that’s the plan we’ve
got in the back of our minds at this stage.”

Lys Gracieux rises to fifth in the worldCox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winner Lys Gracieux
(Heart’s Cry), who retired following her fourth
top-tier victory in the Arima Kinen (Gr 1,
2500m) on December 22, was on Wednesday
rated equal fifth at the annual publication of
the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings.
The six-year-old, who quickened a length and
a half clear of Castelvecchio (Dundeel) and Te
Akau Shark (Rip Van Winkle) when winning
at The Valley in October, was rated 126, two
pounds below the figure awarded to the joint
top-rated trio of Crystal Ocean (Sea The Stars),
Enable (Nathaniel) and Waldgeist (Galileo).
Lys Gracieux shot up the rankings table from
her position of equal 22nd last year, while
compatriot Glory Vase (Deep Impact) - who
landed last month’s Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1,
2400m) - was rated 125, putting him equal ninth
with Benbatl (Dubawi) and the all-conquering
Winx (Street Cry).

Big Blue set for Irish dateCo-trainer Ciaron Maher has issued a positive
bulletin on his jumping flagbearer Big Blue
(Galileo) as he prepares for his second

of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) was pulled-up in the
Christmas Hurdle (Gr 1, 2m) at Kempton on

excuses for the performance. "He went in one
of the slickest races that have been held this
year and he got underneath a jump, three from

told Racing.com. "That took the wind out of
his sails. We've gone back in grade, travelled

Spring’s major racing has highlighted
again that jockeys are arguably
the world’s greatest sportsmen
and women and, almost without
question, the most unique.
Regardless of age or gender; regardless of
background, reputation or accomplishments
they compete on equal terms. This even applies
to children (teenagers) if they happen to have
outridden their claim.
The world’s best travel from country to
country - probably with a business class airfare
- but without an appearance fee.
There is no other legitimate and physically
demanding sport where this happens. They risk
their lives daily.
They have greater balance and dexterity
than Kelly Slater and Valentino Rossi combined.
Greater fitness and upper body strength than
any other athlete according to several studies.
Greater courage is demanded of them
than in any other sport I can imagine. Not to
mention that split second decision making,
a component of most sports, is absolutely
exacerbated in race riding in terms not only of
winning but also survival.
This demands greater promotion and
celebration.
They come from extraordinarily diverse
backgrounds. Take this week at Flemington
alone.
Barend Vorster, here from South Africa via
Singapore, rides a winner on Oaks day. Young
South Australian Jake Toeroek scored on Derby
day - he’d not ridden a winner,
of any sort, in Melbourne until
January this year.
Meanwhile, Daryl “Digger”
McLellan, all but won the Oaks
on Never Listen on Thursday. On
Tuesday, he was punching them
around at Muswellbrook. The bush
reserves to first grade in two days is
unimaginable in any other arena.
There, at Muswellbrook,
he was locking horns with
61-year-old hall-of-famer Robert
Thompson who still more than
holds his own on any racecourse.
And while the usual suspects - Craig
Williams, Damien Oliver, Dwayne Dunn, Hugh
Bowman and Nash Rawiller - have largely
monopolised the Cup week winners (thus far)
- Billy Egan, Toeroek and Vorster along with an
Irishman and a handful of kiwis have been on
the board.
And on Cox Plate Day, 23-year-old Jamie
Kah had the better of 47-year-old Oliver who’s
been unstoppable since, in a Group 3 race
at the Valley while Linda Meech has also, as
always, been among the winners.
Meech has ridden more winners than any
other jockey in Victoria this season. She did
likewise, and by a fair way, last season.
Oliver may be nearing 50 but is riding
“better than ever” according to rival and
commentator Corey Brown.
Glen Boss is 50 and, in recent weeks, has
ridden the winners of two races worth $14
million and $7.5 million. No pressure.
They are quite remarkable these jockeys
coping with pressure and expectation and fear
of failure. The unheralded Declan Bates I’m
sure overcame elements of all of that to win
the Group 1 Rupert Clarke on Begood Toya
Mother.
Perhaps they learn to cope from an early
age. Michelle Payne rode her first winner at 15.
She was literally a little girl. I wondered then
at the almost surreal absurdity of wizened old
punters trusting their money to her. Little did
they know she’d win the Cup.
Now the jockeys have one more thing
to cope with - the vitriol of social media as
Michael Walker, for whom I feel sorry, certainly
discovered this week.
Across the board, the only solution is to
turn off these often insidious platforms.
In Walker’s specific case, the solution may
be to ban the whip. It’s inevitable. And the
reality is that jockeys, here and around the
world, are so good they will adapt.

It was, unquestionably, a wonderful result
for Australasia in the 2019 Melbourne
Cup which produced the tightest finish
in 20 years.
However, it may be premature to declare
that it signals a return to continuing local
celebrations in the years to come on the first
Tuesday in November.
Less than one length separated the first five
to finish - from the winner Vow And Declare -
the Australian bred son of Declaration Of War
(War Front) - trained by Danny O’Brien to the
Paul Preusker trained Surprise Baby, the New
Zealand bred by Shocking (Street Cry) whose
career has been moulded in Australia.
The winner’s performance and that of
Surprise Baby, arguably the very best effort in a
very slowly run race, may be seen as portents of
a local resurrection.
While I’m sure that Vow And Declare and
Surprise Bay, veterans of just 13 and 11 starts
respectively, will remain forces in Australian
racing and that there are positive pointers
from the three-year-old stock of local stallions;
the argument against any wholesale local
rejuvenation in the Cup comes from the fact
that northern hemisphere bred runners filled
the other top seven placings in a race which had
just 2.1 lengths seperate the first nine.
The northern hemisphere bred three-year-
old Il Paradisio (Galileo) was arguably unlucky
not to have won and thereby produce a third
straight win for overseas bred and trained
horses of that age.
Lloyd Williams almost struck again with an
import, Master Of Reality (Frankel) which has
become a recurring theme. Prince Of Arran
(Shirocco) ran extremely well as he continues

Star-studded nominations for Dubai World Cup night A total of 1,774 nominations have been received
for the Dubai World Cup card, held at Meydan on
March 28, which entails 902 horses trained in 21
countries. Australian interest includes inaugural
All-Star Mile (1600m) winner Mystic Journey
(Needs Further), who has been nominated
for the Dubai Turf (Gr 1, 1800m), while Chris
Waller has made an entry for the trailblazing
Nature Strip (Nicconi) in the Al Quoz Sprint (Gr
1, 1200m). The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained
Sunlight (Zoustar) also holds an entry in the
US$2 million contest, although connections have
indicated she will be aimed at Royal Ascot later
in the year. Cross Counter (Teofilo), who won the
2018 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) for Charlie
Appleby, holds a nomination in the Dubai Gold
Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). He won the race in 2019,
beating stable companion and fellow nominee
Ispolini (Dubawi), who was a late scratching from
last year’s Melbourne Cup. Click here to view the
nominations.
Pharoah’s owner Zayat in hot water Owner and breeder Ahmed Zayat, who
raced Triple Crown hero American Pharoah
(Pioneerof The Nile) and retains a share in the
now Ashford Stud-based stallion, has found
himself in legal hot water having been accused
of selling breeding shares that were being used
for collateral on outstanding debts. As such, in
an emergency hearing on Wednesday, Fayette
county judge Kim Bunnell granted a motion
ordering a receiver to seize control of Zayat
Stables, including its horses. The decision was
made after a New York investment group filed
a lawsuit in Lexington this week seeking at least
US$23 million from Zayat on the basis he had
missold breeding shares in American Pharoah.
First foal arrives for world champion sprinter Harry AngelHarry Angel (Dark Angel), the world champion
sprinter who won the Haydock Sprint Cup
(Gr 1, 6f) in record time, sired his first foal on
Wednesday when Karijini (Siyouni) produced
a healthy chestnut filly. "She's a very nice
foal and very strong for a maiden mare," said
Brightwalton Stud manager Sean Keane. "She's
well put together, short-coupled and with good
body and shoulder. I'm very happy with her."
Karijini, who won three all-weather sprints for
trainer Archie Watson, hails from the Colorspin
(High Top) family of Meon Valley Stud. Harry
Angel stands at Dalham Hall Stud at a fee of
£20,000.

In a thrilling four-way finish, the
Danny O’Brien-trained Vow And Declare ($11), who had raced near the
speed throughout, fought back under Craig Williams on the line to score
by a head.
Master Of Reality (Frankel) was second past the post but relegated to
fourth on protest, elevating Prince Of Arran (Shirocco) ($17) to runner-up
with Il Paradiso (Galileo) ($15) another nose back.
Vow And Declare ran 3:24.76 seconds in the cup on ground rated a
Soft 5, more than eight seconds outside Kingston Rule's (Secretariat)
3:16.3 track record set in 1990.
O’Brien said Williams had
pulled off a tactical masterstroke
on Vow And Declare, who was
runner-up to Japan’s Mer De
Glace (Rulership) in the Caulfield
Cup (Gr 1, 2400m).
"He'd been in front past
the winning post the first time
and, particularly for a horse
that normally settles midfield
or back, it was a different
position for him to be in,"
O’Brien said.
"Ultimately, it's been the winning move, I don't think he would've won
if he'd gone back.
"I thought it was an incredibly brave thing for him to do, to roll to the
post the first time.
"My feelings inside the last 100 metres were that he was going to run a
nice third or fourth, which would be a bit disappointing.
"The horse is a courageous horse he's got great stamina and I'm sure
he was headed but he just found some more to get his head out on the
line.

When Vow and Declare was passed in at auction, Paul Lansky
approached members of the group which race Lycurgus, among them
Geoff Corrigan, and a number of family members to form a new syndicate
to race the son of Declaration of War (War Front) with Danny O’Brien.
They must now be thrilled they became involved with the winner of
Australia’s most coveted race and to be sharing in the $5,722,690 he has
earned to date.
After Lycurgus, Geblitz produced the placed filly Blitz’n’Magic (Magic
Albert) in 2014 before Vow and Declare was born the following year but the
mare’s 2016 colt by Stratum (Redoute’s Choice) died. A sister to Lycurgus
by Star Witness (Starcraft) arrived in 2018 and she is to be offered as Lot
329 at January’s Magic Millions Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast in the
Widden Stud consignment.
This spring Geblitz has foaled a filly by Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) and
been bred back to American Pharoah (Pioneer of the Nile).
We wrote about Vow and Declare’s sire Declaration of War, a multiple
Group 1 winner, in yesterday’s ANZ Bloodstock News when profiling his
2019 Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Warning. The former Coolmore
shuttler, now standing in Japan, has some pretty impressive statistics with
five Group/Grade 1 winners among a total of 24 stakes winners from his
early crops in Ireland, the United States and Australia which have given
him a high 7.4 per cent stakes winners-to-runners.
Twice a winner as a two-year-old in France, Declaration of War was
essentially bred for speed but was at his racing best at around 1600m to
2000m though was never tried over longer distances.
Vow and Declare comes from a family of high quality tracing back to
the famous “flying filly” Mumtaz Mahal (The Tetrarch) but breeding buffs
will be scratching their heads as to from where the gelding has derived his
stamina. My guess is that the source may be via Old Vic (Sadler’s Wells),
sire of his third dam Young Vic, a mare with little racing ability.
As you will see from the catalogue pedigree printed here, Young
Vic is an excellent producer but while her superbly-bred sire was a
disappointment at stud, he was outstanding as a racehorse, winning in
1989 both the Prix du Jockey Club (Gr 1, 2400m) and the Irish Derby (Gr
1, 1m 4f), two stiff tests.
One of Young Vic’s daughters, Youthful Presence (Dehere) produced
ATC Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Hauraki (Reset) and two
other stakes winners, most notably Kidnapped (Viscount), winner of the
South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m).
Loralane (Habitat), fourth dam of Vow and Declare, established a
very strong branch of this wonderful Mumtaz Mahal family in Europe,
its most recent superstar being Golden Horn (Cape Cross), whose seven
wins included the Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f), the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr
1, 2400m), the Coral-Eclipse Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) and the Irish Champion
Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f). Loralane is Golden Horn’s third dam.
The pedigree of Vow and Declare up close is dominated by a 3 x 4 cross
of Danehill’s sire Danzig (Northern Dancer) while he carries two sons
of another speed influence, Mr. Prospector (Raise a Native), in his fifth
generation plus another son in his sixth generation. There are also four
more infusions of Northern Dancer (Nearctic) in the sixth and seventh
generations of Vow and Declare’s genetic background.

CHARLIE FELLOWES | @FELLOWESRACING
What a day yesterday was –
it was unbelievable. Most
importantly Prince Of Arran
has come through the run
perfectly. He trotted up beautifully and polished
off all his feed, which is a great sign that the
horse isn’t stressed. He had a lovely long pick of
grass at Werribee this morning. Tash sent me a
message saying that she got so distracted giving
him grass she ended up staying out there for an
hour and a half. So he’s, as always, had the best
treatment since the run.
I never thought I was going to win
It was totally different to last year – I really
felt at one stage 12 months ago we were going
to win the race. But this year I never ever felt,
despite how close we were, that it was ours.
I always knew we were just held by Master
Of Reality and Vow And Declare. It probably
wasn’t until right on the line I realised how
close we actually were. I am incredibly proud of
him for running another fantastic race.
It was a very strong renewal with a lot of
strength and depth. They went a very steady
gallop and turned it into a bit of sprint which
meant those on the pace were massively at an
advantage. But the way it was run really suited
Prince Of Arran – he is such a relaxed, easy to
ride sort of horse which means that he really
can sit wherever you want, whereas if you
have a horse that gets a bit lit up they have to
get some cover, so although we were fortunate
with the way the race was run, we earned that
fortune and luck with his versatility and the way
he runs his races.
Michael Walker’s ride was just perfect. I
said after the Geelong Cup that was his best ride
he’s ever given him, but although we didn’t win,
I think Tuesday’s was just as good. He had him
in such a good position the whole way through
and he couldn't have ridden it any better.
The bottom line is that everything went

our way, the race played into our hands and
we just weren’t good enough on the day.
But he ran his heart out and there really is
nothing more you can ask from a horse. We
only got beaten a head, so we can’t come away
complaining, questioning what could have
been, as everything went our way. I’m not even
just talking about Tuesday either, really since
Goodwood we could not have had a more
perfect preparation into the race. I have said
that all along nothing went wrong. I was just
waiting for something, even small, to go amiss
but it hasn’t. We have been so, so lucky and I
don’t underestimate how fortunate we have
been with him.
The result was exactly what the race needed
Although obviously I would have loved
to have taken the Cup back to Newmarket, I
think the result was very, very important for
Australia. There were a few people in the race
that I thought I wouldn’t have minded losing
to — like Joseph O’Brien, he’s won the race
before, but he really is the most lovely guy and
I wouldn’t have minded being beaten by him.
But you also have to put Vow And Declare in
that bracket because it was a lovely story. It’s
the perfect Australian story: Australian-trained,
Australian-bred – just the right sort of horse you
would want to win the ultimate Australian race.
You got the feeling this year that Europeans
coming over and constantly winning it wasn’t
really doing it any favours. But Tuesday showed
that Australian horses can still be competitive
and can still win this amazing race. It was won
by a big syndicate of owners and it was just a
really, really good story for the race and of all
the horses to beat us I really didn’t begrudge
him for it.
But the love for Prince Of Arran has been
lovely and it’s very touching - they seem to
have taken him under their wing and clearly
have a lot of affection for him. But that really
is the kind of horse he is, he’s got a wonderful
personality. They also love the story of Tash and
her affection for the horse and he’s become a
real public favourite down here. His record in
Australia speaks for itself. In six starts he’s never
been out of the first three, placed in two Group
1s, placed in two Group 2s and won two Group
3s, it’s pretty unbelievable.
Japan or Hong Kong in the pipeline
So the immediate plan for Prince Of Arran
is either the Japan Cup or the Hong Kong Vase.
We were invited to Japan immediately after the
race and then overnight were invited to Hong
Kong as well which is great. I feel like Japan
is unbelievably tough - the ground is always
rattling quick and the Japanese are always very,
very difficult to beat on their own turf.
I am really going to consider both and get
an idea of both fields if I can and see what's
what. I have a feeling the Vase might be quite
strong this year. My first choice will be to go
to Hong Kong just because I feel it suits him
better. I thought he was flying in Hong Kong
last year, but the draw is so crucial there– if
you get drawn wide you are already at a huge
disadvantage before the race has even begun.
That is what I love about the Melbourne Cup
the draw is not the deciding factor as we saw on
Tuesday. Vow And Declare was drawn 21 and
sat in the box seat, how Craig Williams got him
in that position I do not know, which is sort of
what Michael Walker did last year from stall 20.
So plans have not yet been set in stone for
Arran for the rest of the year, but all being well
and he stays fit and healthy, all roads will lead
back to Melbourne again and we are hoping it
will be third time lucky and I can’t wait.

An emphatic three and a quarter
length win was the result, with Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible) and In Her
Time (Time Thief) filling the minor placings. Hot favourite Santa Ana
Lane (Lope De Vega) was uncharacteristically flat, finishing six lengths
from Nature Strip in sixth.
“I’m thrilled for the horse and thrilled for the connections, he has gone to a
new level this preparation, he has had only one real disappointment and that was
at his first start, apart from that he’s been faultless, he’s a star,” McDonald said.
“He was airborne, floating across the ground, I slipped him a bit more
rein at the 300m and I looked at the big screen and thought ‘oh no’, it felt
like I was six in front and he was still going through his gears and he ran it
out so strongly.”
Trainer Chris Waller revealed plans of tackling Royal Ascot next year.
“All preparation he has shown how well he is going, he’s a very happy
horse and that takes them a long way,” he said.
“We’ve been fortunate enough to takeover a very fast horse and we’ve
added a bit of our own fine tuning.
“I’m not to sure where he will have his next starts but I know the team
are keen to take him to Royal Ascot in June but there will certainly be a few
races before then.”
Sam Freedman said favourite Santa Ana Lane would enjoy an
extended spell after a hectic 2019.
"He's had a long year and I
think he was tired today, he raced
flat," Freedman told Racing.com.
"A lot of horses, when they
come back from Hong Kong, it
takes them a while to get over it.
"To be honest, I know he was
unlucky in The Everest but I don't
think he was at his best there
either.
"He's going to have a good
break and we'll see what we do
next year."
Santa Ana Lane’s jockey
Mark Zahra agreed the sprinter
was ‘flat’,
"He just went a bit tired
today," Zahra said.
"When I got the gaps on the
outside fence I thought he'd
zoom - nothing would've beat
the winner today - but he just
went like he's a tired horse."
Passed in for $90,000 (reserve
$120,000) at the 2016 Inglis
Melbourne Premier Yearling
Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun) took his record
to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money of $1,879,285.
Nature Strip is one of three winners for the Group 3-winning mare
Strikeline (Desert Sun), making him a half-brother to Fernhill Handicap

Volatility in Hong Kong.
Strikeline is herself a half-sister to fellow Group 3 winner Bashful
Girl (Perugino), with the pair being out of Listed winner Strike High (Pre
Emptive Strike).
The mare has an unraced three-year-old sister to Nature Strip and
a two-year-old colt by Rosemont Stud’s Shamus Award (Snitzel), while
she has most recently been covered by New Zealand’s leading stallion
Savabeel (Zabeel).
Nature Strip was bred by Sean Buckley’s Golden Grove Stud and the
operation’s manager Anthony Swords does not regret parting with the
brilliant sprinter as a yearling.
“We sell good horses. It’s as simple as that,” Swords said.
“People often say ‘why would they sell their good ones?’ but that’s
what we do. We breed and raise very good horses and the owners of
Nature Strip are seeing that first hand. Good luck to them.’’

The proven ones: establishedstallions set to light up Karaka
A more compact three days
(as opposed to four in 2019),
plus an 11am day one start
time (as opposed to 3pm),
awaits the thoroughbred industry for
New Zealand Bloodstock’s 94th National
Yearling Sales which gets underway at
Karaka on Sunday. The more modern
Book 1, 2 and 3 format, instituted in
2018 to replace the Premier, Select and
Festival format, involves six successive
and solid days with more than 1200 lots
up for grabs. >>

Bright and new, or tried and true?
If you were to purchase only one yearling
out of Book 1, do you take a gamble on one of
the bright and sparkly first season sires, or do
you choose one by a proven sire?
This is an age-old dilemma and Karaka
Book 1 doesn’t make that choice any easier,
although it does go some way to explaining
why syndication has become necessary. One is
simply not enough.
The new kids on the block typically give way
to the “wait and see” formula and it is rare for a
first season sire to top either the sales aggregates
or averages. However, their representation this
year is solid, with 25 sires (16 in 2019) making
up 196 of the 677 lots, or 22 per cent of the
catalogue.
Indeed, the 11 New Zealand-based first
season sires (there were just four in 2019)
account for 151 lots, headed by Tivaci (High
Chaparral) with 40, Turn Me Loose (Iffraaj) (34),
Vadamos (Monsun) (28), Tarzino (Tavistock)
(20) and Belardo (Lope De Vega) (6).
Stud masters Russell Warwick (Westbury
Stud), Mark Chitty (Haunui Farm) and Mark
Chittick (Waikato Stud) should be, and likely
are, very encouraged after a small number
of yearlings by their new stallions - Tarzino,
Belardo and Tivaci respectively - sold well at
the recent Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling
Sale.
Nevertheless, as evidenced by the results
achieved two weeks ago on the Gold Coast,
Australia’s established sires dominated
proceedings quite conclusively. New Zealand’s
newest stallions appear to offer huge promise,
but buyers largely look to tried and true.
Savabeel - Waikato StudRapidly approaching 100 individual stakes
winners (96 currently) and prize-money
that will surpass NZ$100 million this season,
Waikato Stud’s chief flagbearer Savabeel
(Zabeel) continues to be the glue that holds the
New Zealand breeding industry together.
For that reason, he will continue to dominate
sales proceedings. Sheer numbers (73 lots
catalogued) will certainly lead to him topping
the aggregate, while those same numbers will
make it difficult, but not impossible, for him to
top the average.
His reputation and standing is fully justified
having secured his fifth successive New Zealand
sires premiership.
Over the last three months, Savabeel has
sired Herbert Power Stakes (Gr 2, 2400m)
winner The Chosen One, Bendigo Cup (Gr 3,
2400m) winner Top Of The Range, Tauranga
Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) scorer Supera, Auckland
Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m)
winner Yearn, Cal-Isuzu Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m)
winner The Real Beel, Manawatu Cup (Gr 3,
2300m) scorer Concert Hall, Rich Hill Mile (Gr
2, 1600m) winner Prise De Fer and Showbeel,
who last Saturday claimed the Desert Gold
Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m). Those successes have
ensured buyers will not be able to ignore his
powerful presence.
Darci Brahma - The Oaks Stud
The Oaks Stud’s Darci Brahma (Danehill)
has enjoyed a welcome recent resurgence.
Undeservedly underrated, he consistently ranks
in the top three New Zealand sires year after year,
but the current season has been a revelation.
His son Catalyst is a true star three-year-
old and whose contempt for his opposition is
something to behold. His dazzling wins have
captured the hearts and minds of the racing
public and he is one very exciting racehorse.
Backing up Catalyst is Harlech, an
impressive winner of the James and Annie
Sarten Memorial Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m)
immediately prior to a Darci Brahma quinella
when finishing a valiant second to Catalyst in
the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr.1, 1600m).
Don’t forget the filly, Kali, who took out the John
Grigg Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) in mid-October.
Iffraaj - Haunui Farm
It hardly seems to have been three years
since two Derby-winning sons of Iffraaj
(Zafonic), the brilliant Gingernuts and the
tough Jon Snow, took the 2016-17 autumn
three-year-old scene by storm, both in New
Zealand and Australia.
As a result, Iffraaj’s 2017 covering book was
full of quality mares and Book 1 sees 41 lots on
offer by this world-class sire.
His Wyndspelle, from the same crop as
Gingernuts and Jon Snow and a former Waikato
Guineas (Gr 2, 2000m) winner, was recently
and justifiably rewarded with a maiden Group 1
success, taking out the prestigious Captain Cook
Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham last month.
Iffraaj has sired 14 winners around the
world in the last four weeks.
Ocean Park - Waikato StudDiametrically opposed to Iffraaj’s current
situation, and proof of just how difficult it is to
predict sire popularity three years in advance,
Savabeel’s barnmate Ocean Park (Thorn Park) has
a far smaller representation of nine lots, a severe
drop on the 45 catalogued in this sale last year.
Ocean Park’s stock has soared this season,
with the huge earnings achieved by Kolding
catapulting him to fifth in the Australian sires
premiership. Backing up Kolding this past
spring and early summer are Tofane, a dual
Group 3 winner in Melbourne, as well as
Oceanex and Pretty To Sea (the latter as recently
as Boxing Day).
As was the case at November’s Ready
to Run 2YO Sale, the Ocean Parks will be in
demand and with so few on offer, competition
may be strong.

Per Incanto - Little Avondale Stud
The third-leading sire in New Zealand by
earnings in 2018-19, and third in the current
season, Per Incanto (Street Cry) keeps churning
out winners and he leads the 2019-20 list by the
metric of wins and winners. In the past four
weeks he has sired 21 individual winners in
Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia, as well as
in New Zealand.
His Mauna Kea took out the recent
Thompson Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) and
Lightning Jack, the fast-finishing winner
of the Gore Guineas (Listed, 1335m) last
Saturday, became his 15th individual stakes
winner.
Tavistock - Cambridge StudCambridge Stud owners Brendan and Jo
Lindsay, plus managers Henry Plumptre and
Marcus Corban, are likely pleased to have
waved goodbye to 2019. It was a shocker.
There is not one industry person who
doesn’t feel for them as losing three stallions in
such a short space of time is unimaginably sad
fortune, while losing Tavistock (Montjeu) is a
major blow.
Perhaps one or more of his 42 colts (68
lots in total) will burn up the track then find a
home back at Cambridge Stud and continue
his legacy. Lot 86, the half-brother to champion
mare Melody Belle (Commands), might be the
one.
Reliable Man - Westbury Stud
Reliable Man (Dalakhani) is really
hitting his straps. Westbury’s under-the-
radar sire can claim 25 stakes performers
(14 female) including Miami Bound, the
outstanding winner of last year’s VRC Oaks
(Gr 1, 2500m).
She has been followed by 18 winners in the
past four weeks, including Ellerslie Dunstan
Feeds Championship (1500m) winner Master
Painton, Caulfield winner Mr Dependable,
Sydney winner Greenspan, Hong Kong winner
Reliable Team and Romani Girl, who ran third
in the lucrative $1 million Magic Million Fillies
& Mares Plate (1300m) on Magic Millions
raceday.
Sacred Falls - Waikato StudSadly, Waikato Stud lost the services of
Sacred Falls (O’Reilly) towards the end of last
year’s covering season. His first crop are just
three-year-olds and it remains to be seen how
much his loss can be measured in terms of sire
success.
As is often the case, however, there is every
possibility of a future star. All Saints’ Eve, a
three-year-old filly having her third start, won
very nicely at Warwick Farm on January 15.
Sacred Falls’ best form was as an
autumn three-year-old, including his
defeat of Pierro (Lonhro) in the Doncaster
Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m), but it shouldn’t be
forgotten he was a top-tier winner at both
four and five as well.
With 31 representatives in Book 1 plus two
further crops, one of his sons could continue
the legacy of multiple champion sire O’Reilly
(Last Tycoon).
El Roca - Westbury StudStar three-year-old filly Travelling Light
looks very exciting and has provided Westbury
Stud with much to shout about as a daughter of
their El Roca (Fastnet Rock).
In only six starts she has won five times,
including taking out the Levin Classic (Gr 1,
1600m) on January 11. A stakes winner on two
further occasions, her only defeat came in the
New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). The
way she dealt with the boys at Trentham signals
a bright future.
The son of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) has just
five lots catalogued in Book 1. Both the stud
and the auctioneers are probably wishing there
were a few more.
Charm Spirit - Windsor Park Stud
Similar to El Roca, Windsor Park Stud have
much to be pleased about regarding Charm
Spirit (Invincible Spirit) with his son Scorpz in
terrific form leading up to next month’s New
Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m), for which he is
favourite. His back-to-back impressive recent
stakes successes suggest the Derby is well
within his scope.
Charm Spirit also has two very good fillies
in excellent form, namely Lilikoi, the winner of
the recent Eulogy Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m), as well
as Fascino, who won the Fillies Classic (Gr 2,
1600m) at Moonee Valley in October.
Australia has its say Australian-based sires account for a
significant proportion of this year’s Book 1,
with 54 different sires represented (46 in 2019).
Twelve are first season sires but among the
remainder are the same sires that captured all
the headlines at the recent Magic Millions Gold
Coast Yearling Sale, albeit in much smaller
numbers here at Karaka.
Underlining this aspect of buyers’
preferences, each of the 10 yearlings that
fetched $1 million or more were by established
sires, including three each by I Am Invincible
(Invincible Spirit) and Exceed And Excel
(Danehill).
The top five by aggregate - I Am Invincible,
Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), Not A Single Doubt
(Redoute’s Choice), Exceed And Excel and
Sebring (More Than Ready) - accounted for
$63 million, or 35 per cent of the sale gross.
Four of the same five stallions were the leaders
on average (three or more sold), with I Am
Invincible topping that list with an amazing
$482,000.
A notch below those listed, yet both
effective and popular, are a host of established
sires. This list is led by Pierro (Lonhro) with
10 lots followed by Dundeel (High Chaparral)
(6), Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) (6), No Nay
Never (Scat Daddy) (5) and Zoustar (Northern
Meteor) (4). With one or two lots are Fastnet
Rock, Written Tycoon (Last Tycoon), Deep
Field (Northern Meteor), Medaglia d’Oro (El
Prado) and Nicconi (Bianconi).
Charm Spirit WINDOR PARK STUD
Crystal ball, anyone?A reality of breeding is that matings must
be planned well in advance of sales. Current
yearlings are the result of decisions made in
2017 and, in the case of proven sires, based on
race results of 2017.
Predicting future sire success is folly, otherwise
how does one explain why Rip Van Winkle (Galileo),
sire of New Zealand’s second best horse, Te Akau
Shark, has just three lots in Book 1?
In addition, Swiss Ace (Secret Savings), sire of
quality sprinter and recent winner of the Railway
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) Julius, has just two.
Rip Van Winkle averaged 84 live foals his
first four seasons at stud. In 2018 (the crop
represented this year), he produced just 32
live foals. Meanwhile, Swiss Ace averaged
77 live foals his first seven seasons. In 2018,
that number had dropped to 58. In addition,
Ocean Park averaged 103 live foals his first four
seasons, but just 62 in 2018.
Finally, look for Savabeel to preside over
all others and Iffraaj to have a very good sale.
Of the first season sires, Tivaci is expected to
make a lot of noise, with a strong buzz detected
around his offspring in the lead-up to the sale.

Cellsabeel shot to the head of the
market for the Golden Slipper
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) with an
impressive six-length success at
Rosehill on Saturday.
Having made a promising debut in the $1m
Golden Gift over the same track and distance
on November 9, the daughter of late Yarraman
Park resident Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) was
equipped with blinkers for the first time in the
nine-runner contest.
She was a touch slow to move and found
herself one from the rear in the early stages, but
she improved into fifth on the rails passing the
600-metre marker.
Tommy Berry eased her deeper and into
clear running at the home turn and she sprinted
well, taking the lead with 200 metres left to run
before drawing away stylishly on the Heavy 8
track, looking a classy filly in the making.
Cellsabeel’s success was another feather in
the cap of training duo Ciaron Maher and David
Eustace, whose two-year-old season continues
to go from strength to strength, highlighted
by Away Game’s (Snitzel) victory in the Magic
Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m).
Cellsabeel is the TAB’s $6 favourite for the
Slipper and while she is already the highest-
rated juvenile of the season so far, her pedigree
augurs nicely for Group 1 assignments moving
forward.
She is one of 11 named foals, 10 of whom have
raced and seven of whom have won out of Railway
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Our Egyptian Raine
(Desert Sun), who was crowned New Zealand’s
champion older female sprinter in 2002-03. She
was placed a further 10 times in top-tier company,
including the Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) and
the All-Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in 2004.
In turn, Cellsabeel is a half-sister to Egyptian
Symbol (Stratum), a dual Group 3 winner who
has earned over $1.5 million in prize-money,
and Strathmore (Fastnet Rock), who was Group
1-placed in Hong Kong.
Our Egyptian Raine also has a yearling colt
by Vinery Stud resident All Too Hard (Casino
Prince) and produced a colt by his barnmate
Headwater (Exceed And Excel) last year.
Meanwhile, the final crop of yearlings by
Hinchinbrook are selling this year, with six
youngsters by the late sire catalogued in the
Book 1 session of the upcoming NZB National
Yearling Sale at Karaka.

The Coolmore-raced and Lindsay
Park-trained filly Personal (Fastnet
Rock) overcame difficulties to
score impressively at Saturday’s
Flemington meeting, a performance endorsed
by fast sectional times.
After beginning slowly on debut when
second in a two-year-old fillies’ maiden
(1125m) at Geelong on January 2, Craig
Williams rode her patiently in the two-year-old
handicap (1100m) on Saturday and after being
second last early on, she settled nicely between
runners in fifth spot.
Personal was shuffled back to last in the
seven-runner field at the 200-metre point
before Williams was able to ease her deeper
and into clear running.
Personal then showed a very good turn of
foot, grabbing the lead nearing the post and
winning by half a length with something in
hand. The Mick Price and Michael Kent jnr-
trained filly Parlophone (I Am Invincible) ran
second, with Godolphin’s Amateurish (Brazen
Beau) a further long-head away third.
Personal’s time for the 1100-metre journey
was 1:05.64 (11.93 200m rate), but it was her
sectional times that best demonstrated the
merit of the performance.
Personal’s 200-metre breakdown (from the
1000m) was: 11.29, 11.43 (400m in 22.72), 11.11
(600m in 33.83), 11.53 (800m in 45.36) with her
final 200 metres in 11.50 to give her a quick final
1000-metre time of 56.86.
A $640,000 purchase at the 2019 Inglis
Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Personal looks
set for a good career, while the runner-up
Parlophone and the third-placed Amateurish
are also lightly-raced fillies with the potential to
progress to better things.
The feature at Flemington was the
Kensington Stakes (Listed, 1000m) and while it
was only a five-runner field it provided a keenly-
contested affair, with the first four finishing less
than a length apart.
Victory went to the consistent South
Australian-trained sprinter Bold Star (Needs
Further), who won by a nose from Causeway
Girl (Shamus Award), with All Too Royal (All
Too Hard) another half-head away in third and
Time To Reign (Time For War) fourth.
The time for the journey was 58.99 but from
a sectional perspective it was a race of extremes,
with the first 400 metres being clocked in a
pedestrian 26.92 (13.46 200m rate) while the final
600 metres was a very fast 32.07 (10.69 200m rate).
That tempo was set by the Gary Portelli-
trained sprinter Time To Reign, who was
having his first start since finishing fifth in the
Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Rosehill
last March, and jockey Damien Oliver clearly
did not overtax the colt in the early stages.
The leading rider has demonstrated his
excellent judgement of pace on countless
occasions and his tactics almost paid off on
Time To Reign’s return as he was only overtaken
in the closing stages.

The slow early pace resulted in fast closing
sectionals, with the winner Bold Star clocking
31.89 (last 600m), 21.12 (last 400m) and 10.68
(last 200m); Causeway Girl clocking 31.69
(last 600m), 20.98 (last 400m) and 10.64 – the
quickest of the race; and All Too Royal clocking
31.92 (last 600m), 21.18 (last 400m) and 10.73
for his final 200 metres.
At Saturday’s Rosehill meeting, one of the
highlights was the stunning victory of the the
Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained filly
Cellsabeel (Hinchinbrook) in the two-year-old
handicap (1100m).
Having her second race start, Cellsabeel
settled back in the field after a slow beginning,
but she stamped her class over the final stages
in racing away to score brilliantly by six lengths.
Racing in blinkers for the first time,
Cellsabeel was clearly a class above her
opposition and she is now the top-rated
juvenile of the season so far as connections set
her on a path towards the Golden Slipper at
Rosehill on March 21.
Cellsabeel’s come-from-behind racing style
was suited by a fast mid-race tempo, which was
set by the Gerald Ryan-trained colt Return With
Honour (Fastnet Rock), who worked hard in the
early stages to find the lead from a wide barrier.
Return With Honour clocked (from the
1000 metres) 22.45 (400m) 34.37 (600m) and
46.11 (800m) before that effort told in the rain
affected conditions and he dropped out to
finish seventh.
In coming from well back in the field,
Cellsabeel returned impressive closing
sectionals on the Heavy 8 track, with the
talented filly running her last 1000 metres in
57.87, last 800 metres in 46.82, last 600 metres
in 35.31 and 23.59 for her final 400 metres.
Another juvenile to take the eye last
weekend was Cellsabeel’s stablemate Prague
(Redoute’s Choice), who impressed in taking
out the two-year-old maiden handicap (1200m)
at Friday night’s Canterbury meeting.
A $1.6 million purchase at the 2019 Magic
Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Prague
settled nicely for Tommy Berry, tracking a good
pace in third place on the rails before getting
through to be in a challenging position on
turning for home.
Prague got to the front halfway down the
straight and then drew clear to score easily
by two lengths from the front-running Easy
Campese (Sidestep), with the Chris Waller-
trained colt Spokesman (Press Statement) a
further long-head away third. The time was
1:12.07 on the Soft 7 track.
There was a solid mid-race tempo set by the
leader with the 600 metre section (from the 1000m
to the 200m) clocked in 34.78, which played into
the hands of Prague, who showed his potential to
advance to better things in coming from off the
pace to score comfortably at the post.
The final word this week goes to Tasmanian
filly Still A Star (Toronado), who impressed On
The Watch in the way she took out Saturday
night’s Launceston Guineas (Listed, 2100m),
her fifth win - with five seconds - in 10 starts.
Despite working early on from a difficult
barrier, she settled nicely in sixth place, easily
took the lead on turning for home and then
drew away for a very easy win. She ran the 2100
metres out strongly, clocking 2:10.86 for that
distance and 48.56 for her last 800 metres.
The victory suggested that Still A Star could be
the next Tasmanian-trained horse to travel across
the Tasman and prove effective on the mainland.

Lyle Hewitson earned a long-awaited
and deserved first Happy Valley win
on Wednesday to help trainer David
Ferraris continue his solid form this
term, particularly with his stable’s old-stagers.
The two-time South African champion
jockey has had a stark introduction to Hong
Kong racing, with his stats rolling into tonight’s
nine-race card reading one win from 174 rides –
a win strike rate of 0.57 per cent.
But Hewitson has not buckled in the face of
limited opportunities. After enduring a barren
four months before sealing his breakthrough
Hong Kong win at Sha Tin, the extra 24 days
for his Valley follow-up must have seemed a
breeze.
“It’s probably a lot more exciting here at
the Valley with the atmosphere,” Hewitson said
after driving the Ferraris-trained Kiram (Elusive
City) to a neck verdict in the Class 3 Hung To
Handicap (1650m).
“Without blowing my own trumpet, I feel
I’ve been riding really well and getting positive
results from limited opportunities. Obviously,
when I get that little bit of a squeak I have to
make the most of it.”
Ferraris was pleased for his 22-year-old
countryman whose talent, he believes, deserves
more success.
“It’s lovely,” the trainer said. “Lyle should
have ridden a lot more winners, but as a client
of mine said, this is a cruel place; and there’s
no reason why certain jockeys should be riding
winners and he isn’t, because he is, in my
opinion, better than a lot of them riding here.
But that’s the way it goes.”
Kiram’s win was his second this season
from only four outings, suggesting the nine-
year-old French import is racing as well as he
ever has. And it followed a success at Sha Tin on
Sunday for Ferraris’ eight-year-old Magnetism
(Monsieur Bond), another two-time winner
this term.
“Him and Magnetism, I love training these
old boys,” Ferraris said. “I take pride in keeping
them sound and they’re just wonderful old
horses and I make sure they go to nice homes
when it’s time to retire.
“I told Lyle to lead because there didn’t
seem to be much pace on and this old horse is
in great form, and I knew that if he kicked at the
top of the straight with a lead they’d struggle to
catch him.”
Hewitson took the bull by the horns with
900 metres to race, allowing his mount to stride
to the front; the 39/1 shot was determined in
holding off runner-up Farshad (Kendargent).
“It was really nice to overcome a deep
draw (10), there were a lot of things against the
horse and he’s pulled that off, so it’s a win full of
merit and one I think I can be pretty proud of,”
Hewitson said.
“Although this horse is probably at his best
in Class 4, he had a light weight and with no
speed in the race we adopted tactics that won
him the race, so that’s a feather in his cap.”
Tony Piccone was also on the mark for the
first time at the downtown track, partnering
the Tony Millard-trained Sparkling Dragon
(O'Reilly) to a three-quarters of a length score
in section one of the Class 3 Hoi Yuen Handicap
(1200m). The Frenchman, 22 days into his
first Hong Kong contract, picked up his three
previous wins at Sha Tin.

Ho helps Fownes end drought
Caspar Fownes ended a dry spell stretching
back to December 18 with a double that owed
plenty to the skill and confidence of jockey
Vincent Ho.
“I’d forgotten what it’s like,” Fownes
quipped after Ho had sealed the brace for his
old boss aboard Shamport (Shamardal) – fresh
off a spell at Conghua – in race three, the Class 4
Shing Yip Handicap (1200m).
“He’s a horse that, truthfully speaking has
been quite disappointing,” Fownes admitted.
“On his form in Australia he looked like he’d be
at least an 80 or 80-plus horse in Hong Kong but
he just never came up to what he looked like he
was going to be.
“It was a lovely ride again by Vincent –
it’s wonderful to see my old apprentice ride
some winners for me and ride with so much
confidence. He got him in a beautiful position
from the draw (gate seven), which was a bit
tricky and did his job nicely in the end.”
Ho kicked off the night with a sharp tactical
move in the opener, the Class 5 Yue Man
Handicap (2200m).
The rider had his mount Sky Gem (Niagara)
at the tail after a slow start but the pedestrian
pace up front prompted a rapid, field-skirting
move to lead with 650 metres to race – the
Fownes-trained four-year-old forged on to land
a first win by two and three-quarter lengths.
“The horse had been racing quite well and
dropping down in the ratings off some quite
good runs,” Fownes noted.
“I said to Vincent it looked a race devoid of
speed and I said ‘the horse is rock-hard fit so
if the sectionals are slow down the back, you
take off’. He rated him beautifully and it was a
winning move.”
Fownes and Ho were denied a rapid treble
in race four, section two of the Class 4 Wai Yip
Handicap (1650m). Ho had the lead halfway
down the straight on the Fownes-trained Royal
Racer (Dreamscape) but had to settle for second
when Joao Moreira delivered the Frankie
Lor-trained Flash Famous (Ilovethiscity) on a
revving run to win by half a length.
Flash Famous was another winner off
a Conghua prep, as was Very Sweet Orange
(Exceed and Excel), who scraped home in the
Class 4 Mut Wah Handicap (1000m) to move
Alfred Chan to within one win of reducing his
10lb claim.
The apprentice set the pace on the Me Tsui-
trained son of Exceed And Excel (Danehill),
who put his nose down just at the right moment
to hold on by a short-head and the same
from the closing Dr Proactive (Denman) and
Winner’s Heart (Ambidexter).
Premiership leader Moreira made it a
double and took his season’s tally to 61 when
the John Size-trained Dor Dor (Shamexpress)
closed late off a rail run to nab runner-up Starlit
Knight (Fath) and land section one of the Wai
Yip Handicap (1650m).
Silvestre de Sousa and trainer Manfred Man
teamed up to score with Compassion Star (Bullbars)
in the Class 4 Shing Yip Handicap (1200m), the six-
year-old’s fourth win from 27 starts.
The night’s finale, section two of the Class 3
Hoi Yuen Handicap (1200m), went to the Benno
Yung-trained Hinchinlove (Hinchinbrook)
who, under Derek Leung, notched his first
Hong Kong win at the 18th attempt.
Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on
Monday, January 27, with the first race set for
12pm.
