Dear Ms . Williams,
Our project, entitled Natural History Room at Union School, requested $971 .75 from the Nongame Wildlife Conservation Fundto aid in the development of a nature room at Union School inWeldon Springs State Recreation Area through the purchase ofteaching aids, habitat enhancement, and reference materials .
Our objectives were to : (1) move Union School to Weldon Springs,(2)renovate the school and furnish it according to the period,(3) establish a second room as an outdoor education and naturalhistory center, (4) enhance the area surrounding the schoolas wildlife habitat, (5) equip the natural history room withteaching aids, science equipment, reference books and materialsto aid in the identification and study of wildlife observedin the park, (6) assemble collections of leaves, wildflowers, plaster casts of animal tracks, found objects, and taxidermist-mounted animals representative of those commonly found in thepark, and (7) develop lesson plans to aid teachers .
At least seven distinct habitat types are represented withinthe park . This variety offers excellent opportunities for naturestudy . Opportunities abound for viewing and studying wildlifeand plants native to Central Illinois in an undisturbed setting .The nature room will re-enforce lessons learned on outings intothe park and will expand the scope and types of nature projectswhich teachers will be able to provide .
The following pages will detail our use of the Nongame WildlifeConservation Fund grant in accordance with our agreement .
We still have much work to do, but school classes were alreadyusing the facilities and equipment this spring, and we areworking with children and families every weekend this summer .
Thank you for your faith in our project .
Carol M . Thompson, PresidentWeldon Spring Foundation, Inc .
