s WElEDA MArks its 90-year anniversary, we’re celebrating 90 years of working in harmony

with nature to benefi t you, the planet and the partners we work with. This spring I had the opportunity to meet some of these partners when I went to Turkey, where we grow our fragrant organic Rosa damascena f lowers, the ones we use to make rose essential oil. During my visit, I was able to see firsthand how Weleda walks the talk when it comes to social and environmental sustainability. I’ll never forget the smell of the roses: beautiful and intoxicating — it was all my colleagues and I could do to tear ourselves away from the fl uff y piles of petals drying on the cool concrete fl oor of the warehouse next to the fields. Weleda started this project with 30 farmers in 2003, helping them convert to organic cultiva-tion. Today, more than 300 farmers have signed on and they are guaranteed a fair wage from Weleda year to year. Weleda also helped open a kindergarten for the farmers’ children. Michael Straub, head of Weleda’s

Biodynamic® gardens in Germany and one of the people who developed this project for the company, knows all of the farmers in the project by name. He told me, “My fi rst goal in starting this project was to help the farmers.” Roses have long been symbols of harmony and balance. And isn’t balance something we are all looking for in our

lives? In this issue, you’ll fi nd tips for fi nding balance in this busy world on page 18. For ways you can use natural products to embrace your natural beauty, head on over to page 12. And if there are any new moms or moms-to-be out there, on

page 24 you’ll discover how to gently care for common newborn skin ailments. That said, we hope you enjoy this issue of Weleda’s we magazine — and that you always remember to stop, take a deep breathe, and smell the (organic) roses.

osÉ ArtÉMio AlCArAZ CArDEnAs stands on the platform of his old pickup truck wearing welly boots in temperatures just under 104°f. Using a

pitchfork, he pokes rhythmically at what looks like brown brushwood at his feet, but it’s actually organic sesame plants that have been drying for three weeks. The seed pods split open easily in the midday heat; the seeds trickle onto the truck bed like sand. The sesame is opening. Sesame has brought good fortune to 37-year-old Carde-nas. He had tried to grow it years earlier but had given up because the prices fl uctuated too much and he was unable to earn enough to support himself and his family — that is, until Sesajal came along. Sesajal is the sesame oil mill from which Weleda obtains its organic sesame seed oil. Sesajal guarantees the farmers fair prices and also helps them con-vert their fi elds from conventional to organic. Through the partnership, Weleda is able to further realize its mission of fair treatment for partners and suppliers, just as it has done for 90 years. Sesajal is located in the Tomatlán region in the state of Jalisco, in Southwest Mexico. In this region, the land is

dotted with deep green mango trees, pine-apples grow in abundance and blue agave sprouts here and there. The heat is oppres-sive; it lies heavy on the land and seems to silence every sound. Rows of small pyramids cover the fields like mysterious symbols: sesame set up to dry in what are known as monos. But sesame is not endemic to this area. Afri-can slaves brought it with them from their homeland, from where it had apparently spread as far as Babylon thousands of years before, making it one of the oldest oil-bear-ing plants in the world. Obtaining the best quality oil from the seeds all depends on one thing: the right moment. “You need to choose the right time for sowing, as well as for harvesting,” says Cardenas. “We sow when the rainy season has started and it won’t dry out again. You need a bit of good luck.” And experience, like Cardenas has. Sesame is relatively undemanding and is content with the region’s sandy soil and little water. Under good conditions, the sesame plants, which have pale pink flowers reminiscent of fox-glove, will grow tall within three months. When the plants shed their leaves, they are ready for cutting. Through its partnership with Weleda, Sesajal guarantees Cardenas a minimum price for five years, and also pays him in advance so that he can pay his seasonal

workers. Sesajal lends the farmers tractors for sowing and pays half a peso more per kilo for organic quality than conventional. One acre can produce more than 300 kilos (660 lbs.) of sesame. That amounts to 150 pesos extra per acre and 5,100 pesos for Cardenas’s 34 acres: roughly an extra $432 per harvest in a country where the minimum wage is around 55 pesos per day (about $5). “I’ll be sticking to growing organic sesame,” says Cardenas.

Al l i n A DAy ’ s Wo r k While Cardenas and the farmers around Tomatlán are busy with the harvest and their fields are covered with the stubble from cut plants, the field of another sesame farmer, Joel Rivera Chávez, is still green. His fields are located right beside the sea, a good hour’s drive further south near Chalacatepec, where the climate is even warmer. Apart from the murmur of the sea, the sharp ring of machetes is the only sound. Three men are cutting the green plants and stacking them into monos. They need two weeks to cut and stack 32 acres. Sesajal recently tested machines that would cut and bind the sesame. Carlos

Vargas Rutter, a tall young doctor of food chemistry who works for Sesajal in Guadala-jara, says the machines will be ready for the farmers in time for the next harvest. For now though, everything is still being done using painstaking manual labor. Weeds, such as the tall quelite, have to be pulled out at regular inter-vals so they do not steal the sesame’s space and sun. Like Cardenas, Chávez’s hands are calloused from all the machete blows, and the spines of the little guisapole thistles leave bloodstained scratches on his skin. Instead of the maize he grew previously, Chávez grows organic sesame, which earns more: “I was not familiar with sesame, but Sesajal gave me support and advice from the start — when to sow, when to harvest, what to do about the ants.” Rutter advised him to use a traditional remedy, the round fruit of the cuastecomate tree. It’s filled with sugar water and placed in an ant hill, which keeps the uninvited guests away. To be certif ied organic, the farmers’ fields must be cultivated for three years

without fertilizers and pesticides, which most of the rural population in Tomatlán cannot afford to use anyway. As a result, many farmers were already growing organic quality, but since they were not cer-tified, they were unable to sell their sesame as a valuable organic product. Sesajal’s

Rutter and agricultural engi-neer Miguel Ángel, whose grandfather grows sesame, provide the farmers with advice during the change-over period to organic, and

they visit the farmers regularly. Sesajal also helps the farmers cover the costs of the certification process. One of the first farmers in the region to switch to organic sesame was Augustín Hernández Rodriguez, a 70-year-old with tousled grey hair and a prominent chin. Like many others, his decision was not based solely on economic incentive: “I had heard that all the chemicals are not good for your health,” says Rodriguez, who travels to his fields every day by bicycle or horse. He owns 14 acres of hilly land where he grows sesame and tamarinds. Because of

the partnership with Sesajal, the farmers in the region no longer have to leave to look for work elsewhere, and the inequitable cayotes

— the middlemen — are no longer part of the process. A total of 183 farmers in the Tomatlán region currently benefi t from the partner-ship with Sesajal, which guarantees them an economic prospect over a number of years, and not just from one harvest to the next as in the past. Organic sesame is grown on a total of 5,190 acres. The area will expand to 8,648 acres this year as more campesinos offi cially work as organic farmers.

t H E J o u r n E y to G E r M A n y Back on Cardenas’s farm, he is busy cleaning the leaves, husks and dirt from the sesame seeds using rectangular wooden sieves that he has made himself, which two men need to hold and shake. They then f lap away the fi ne husks with blankets so they do not collect on the growing pile lying on a tarpaulin, which would spoil the yield. The harvest from the previous day fills a total of 20 sacks that Cardenas ties up and will later take to the inspection point. From there, the load travels by truck to the oil mill in Guadalajara, where Sesajal performs the initial analysis to make sure it’s free of pesticides and then processes the seed into oil. The sesame oil is shipped to Germany in tank containers that hold 8,000 gallons. In Stuttgart, further analy-ses by the company Gustav Hess ensure high organic standards are maintained. Only after this does Weleda obtain the oil from Mexico. Eight weeks will have passed since Cardenas and the other farmers fi lled their sacks — each with 40 kilos (88 lbs.) and around a million seeds. A tiny sesame seed only weighs a fraction of a gram — but incomparably more for the organic farmers of Tomatlán. af

HE BErksHirE Co-oP MArkEt is a cooperatively owned store that sells local organic products and

groceries, and buys from producers with the highest standards. The store’s history goes back to the late ’60s, when families in Great Barrington started forming buying clubs. These clubs would buy large quantities of food and then split the cost. T he buying clubs helped the families get a better quality of food at a lower price. Today there are more than 2,200 active owners who participate in the Berkshire Co-op. Hesty Morley, who works as a buyer in the Wellness Department, sums up why it’s so important to live naturally. “When I think of living naturally, I think of living as nature intended. No added chemicals, no pesticides — just very pure. There is mini-mal processing, the products are as close to the natural state as possible, and there is a

smaller impact on the environment.” Morley who is also a big label reader, suggests that if you don’t recognize the ingredients on the label, you probably shouldn’t use the product. T he Berkshire Co- op has devoted customers, who choose to shop there specifically for their high standards and

farmers-market feel. “There i s a sense of community and people gravitate toward it,” says Morley. “Many cus-tomers come in specifically looking for Weleda products.

The number-one, top-of-the-line Weleda product is Skin Food. It just flies off the shelf and it’s hard to keep it stocked.” Stop by Berkshire if you happen to be in the area. They have a café, hot bar, salad bar, grab-and-go section, and on Friday nights there are fresh-baked pizzas. Take it from Morley: “Berkshire is more than a grocery store!” berkshire.coop cs

can i do to help these areas age gracefully?

— Julie, Winston-salem, nC

It’s easy to forget to care for our neck, our hands and our décolleté, but because the skin in these areas is thin, it’s often where the signs of aging fi rst appear. Sea buckthorn berry and seed oil is rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids that will help lessen the signs of sun damage, like dryness and discoloration. Massage our Sea Buckthorn Body Oil onto your décolleté after each bath or shower and rub the remaining oil into your hands to help lessen discoloration. Our Pomegranate Regenerating Body Oil is also good for the décolleté because it helps pro-mote your skin’s natural renewal process, making skin appear fi rmer. » i’ve always assumed that body oils would

be greasy and difficult to use, but i’ve heard

so many good things about Weleda’s, i’m

interested in giving them a try. Could you

tell me the best way to apply your body oils

and what the benefits are of using an oil

instead of a lotion? — Anna, new york City

Natural body oils like Weleda’s, which are made from sun-ripened plant, nut and seed oils, are incredibly beneficial for our skin. Because body oils are more concentrated than lotions, which contain water, their beneficial ingredients absorb more quickly and deeply, delivering all of the natural goodness — vitamins, essential fatty acids and hydration — that our skin needs to be smooth, balanced and beautiful. In fact, our skin is made up of fats (lipids) and oils, and its outermost layer, the epidermis, must replace close to 100 mg of lost lipids every day. Along with the daily loss of oil, our skin begins to lose its ability to produce these oils as we age. Plant oils, which are compatible with our skin’s own lipid layer, are the best choice to replace these disappear-ing oils. Apply the Weleda Body Oil of your choice right after a shower or a bath, when your skin is still damp. Pour a small amount onto damp skin and massage in a circular motion toward the heart until it’s absorbed, and voilà! Healthy skin is yours.

» Do i need to stick with just one of your

facial care lines, or can i pick and choose

various products? — Megan, Austin

This is a question Weleda fans often ask us. This year, Weleda launched its new

Pomegranate Firming Facial Care and Cleansing Line. Whether your skin is sensi-tive, dry, oily, prematurely aging or naturally aging, we now have a skin-care line for you, to enhance your skin’s natural beauty. Weleda facial care formulas are designed for your skin during a certain stage of life, so you will see the best results if you stick to the line that is most suitable for you (Iris Hydrating Facial Care for your 20s, Wild Rose Smoothing Facial Care for your 30s and Pomegranate Firming Facial Care beginning in your 40s). The exception is our Almond Soothing Facial Care. It’s a beautiful solution when your skin is temporarily stressed, irritated or sensitive. You can use it for a while, and when your skin returns to its usual, stress-free self, you can switch back to the line that best suits your life stage.

EMBRACE YOUR

NATURAL BEAUTY

Page 13: Weleda Magazine (Summer/Fall 2011 (#9))

Beauty is all around us. it’s in the flowers that bloom each spring, the leaves that dot the ground in fall and the snow that covers the

trees in winter. Beauty is also a part of us, radiating in our eyes, reflecting in our smiles, and glowing on our cheeks. Much like a gardener uses water and nutrients to enhance a plant’s vitality, we can embrace our natural beauty by nourishing our skin with pure ingredients — ingredients that work with our skin to help it be its healthiest, radiant and most beautiful.

Natural products are as effective as their synthetic counter-parts, according to natural beauty expert and makeup artist Jessa Blades, owner of Blades Natural Beauty. “Not only do the ingredients work, they also heal the skin,” she says. “Synthetic ingredients are only good at doing specific tasks, whereas plants are well-rounded and inherently expert at supporting and healing the skin.” Constance Dunn, author of Practical Glamour: Presenting

Your Most Beautiful and Polished Self to the World, compares using natural skin-care products to the idea of feeding your body with pure foods. “You’ve probably felt how efficiently your body processes and utilizes whole, unrefined foods versus the preservative-packed, chemical-filled kind,” she says. “Likewise, natural products provide your skin with the most direct and unadulterated type of nourishment. They don’t contain cheap fillers and synthetic components that might result in a bigger-looking bottle but don’t actually help your skin. When you buy natural products, you get a higher concentration of effective ingredients.” So show the world your natural beauty! Embrace pure skin-care ingredients and follow the tips on the following pages to bring out your most beautiful you. »

Using a gentle cleanser followed by a refi n-ing toner in the morning and evening is the basis for beautiful skin. But the skin on our face is delicate — it’s best to treat it with a tender touch. Dunn suggests avoid-ing cleansers with harsh detergents, such as sodium laurel sulfate, which strip the skin’s natural oils and damage its protec-tive barrier. Instead, choose non-stripping cleansers like Weleda’s Gentle Cleansing Milk. It’s made with nourishing organic jojoba seed oil and antioxidant-rich sesame seed oil for deep yet gentle cleansing. Follow with toner, which Patricia Pol, Weleda’s holistic skin-care expert and esthetician, says has several benefi ts. “Applying a toner after your cleanser will help your mois-turizer absorb deeply, creating a better foundation for makeup. It will also help remove any residue from your cleanser or trace remnants of makeup.” Weleda’s Refi n-ing Toner contains witch hazel and rosehip leaf extract to help purify and strengthen your pores. Combine it with water in a spray bottle to create a refreshing facial mist.

2AlWAys kEEP your skin HyDrAtED. Adding oil to oily skin? It may seem counter-intuitive, but Pol says that even oily skin can be dehydrated, a condition that is character-ized by loss of moisture and has little to do with overactive oil glands. “When our skin is oily, we tend to use harsh products to try and lessen the oil, and this can lead to dehydra-tion, even as the oil glands go into overdrive to try and compensate for the loss,” says Pol. “Using a light moisturizer on oily skin will help your skin stay in balance and prevent fine lines caused by dehydration.” Try using Weleda’s facial lotions — Iris Hydrating Lotion or Wild Rose Smoothing Facial Lotion, for example — which boast a light texture and are ideal for oiler skin types.

3HArnEss tHE PoWEr of nAturAl AntioxiDAnts.

Antioxidants like vitamins A, C and E are some of the most beneficial ingredients for our skin, and the best ones are those found in nature; your body can recognize antioxidants from plants better than synthetic versions made in a lab. Pol compares the efficacy of natural antioxidants verses synthetic ones to a key and a lock. “In order for our bodies to rec-ognize certain proteins and compounds, the key has to not only fit in the lock, it also has to be able to unlock it,” she explains. “Natural ingredients are better recognized by the body — they are compatible with our own skin and work on a deeper level to increase cell renewal and fight free radicals that cause skin damage and wrinkles.” Give your skin a daily dose of antioxidants from ingredients like pomegran-ates and rosehip seeds. Weleda Pomegranate Firming Serum and Wild Rose Smoothing Day Cream are good options to try.

4 ExfoliAtE GEntly, nAturAlly.

To maintain your skin’s natural balance, treat it like you would your fine china, not your kitchen floor. “Over-exfoliating or scrubbing your face removes your own natural protective oils,” says Pol. “It disrupts your skin’s barrier function, making your skin more sensitive.” Exfoliation happens naturally and effectively when you swipe Weleda’s Gentle Cleansing Milk or Refining Toner across your face with a cotton pad. Doing this on a regular basis will gently remove dead skin cells, without disturbing your skin’s natural rhythms. As we get older, however, our skin’s cell renewal starts to slow. You can help support it with natural ingredients like pomegranate seed oil, which contains punicic acid, an unsaturated fatty acid that supports cell renewal. Try Weleda’s Pomegranate Firming Facial Care, which actively aids your skin’s own ability to regenerate. »

When it comes to makeup, less is more and the more natural the better, according to celebrity makeup artist Lina Hanson, who uses natural makeup on her clients because she says the vitamins and antioxidants they contain help keep skin healthy. She begins every makeup application with a natural face serum. “It gives you a healthy glow,” she says. To enhance your natural beauty, Hanson suggests using a tinted moisturizer or light mineral foundation and dabbing concealer under your eyes to even out skin tone. “Dust a soft pink blush on the apples of your cheeks,” she says. “It will make you look fresh and awake.” Blades recommends using a light shimmer (not glitter) shadow on your eyelids to really make your eyes pop and appear more open. “Then take that same light shimmer shadow and place some on the inner corner of your eye to refl ect the light,” she says.

Facials may seem like a luxury rather than a necessity, but seasonal facials — four times a year — can help maintain your skin’s natural beauty. As the seasons change from summer to fall, a facial can help remove the clogged pores that occur from an increase in oil production and sweat during the warmer months. In the winter, a facial can help keep your skin moisturized and nourished. Facial massage increases circulation to the skin, bringing nutrients to the surface and restoring a beautiful, natural glow. Dunn says facials that include natural products are particularly benefi cial because of the gentleness and purity of the ingredients. “No matter your skin type or condition, there is a natural formulation that can be used to treat it,” she says. “Using products with high-quality, benef icial ingredients is essential to the long-term health of your skin.” cr

alance is beautiful. When we find balance in our lives, our skin glows, we feel healthy and vibrant, we handle stress with

ease and we sleep deeply through the night. The little things don’t bother us; the big things matter more. Unfortunately, balance is often elusive; finding it is one of the greatest chal-lenges we all face. Between the demands of family and career and the many challenges life throws at us, trying to fi nd time for ourselves to de-stress often seems impossible. But it’s one of the most important things we can do for our health, well-being and happiness. Writer Margaret Roach knows just how diff icult it can be to f ind balance. At one time she was the editorial director of Martha

our entire being, from our skin to our soul. Read on for some tips for managing stress and fi nding balance in your own life.

balance in nature

s we try to fi nd balance in our lives, we should look to nature as an example. Just like our own lives, nature “has busy

times and down times, it surges and then it slows,” says Roach. Winter is a time of rest, and spring is a time of renewal. Just like nature, we need our own downtime in order to re-energize. Taking a break by spending time out-doors can be therapeutic. Maria Rodale knows fi rsthand the benefi ts of nature. The CEO and chairman of Rodale, Inc., author of three books, including Organic Manifesto:

How Organic Farming Can Heal Our Planet, and mother of three, says that fresh air is her saving grace. “Connecting directly with the earth is what gives me the strength, perspective and energy to do what I do,” she says. “Ironically, the more time I take to meet my own needs, the better I can meet everyone else’s,” she says. Make nature part of your life and you’ll be one step closer to fi nding a sense of calm and balance.

Eventually Roach left her fast-paced job in the city to be in her country home full time, and she managed to fi nd peace. She even wrote a book called And I Shall

Have Some Peace There: Trading in the Fast

Lane for My Own Dirt Road. “Now I work when I feel the call, sleep when I am tired, eat when I am hungry, and I do all of it surrounded by nature, in a quiet rural set-ting,” she says. Unfortunately, we don’t all have the option of leaving our stress behind and high-tailing it for the countryside as Roach did, but her story can help guide us all toward finding some peace of our own. Taking a “time out” — a moment to fi nd bal-ance and harmony — isn’t about being lazy or unmotivated. It’s about doing something good for yourself and those around you, too. When we are grounded and centered, we can perform better at the many roles we play in our world, while positively aff ecting

e’ve all thought it at one time or another: there simply aren’t enough hours in the day. But if we relegate some

of the time we spend browsing the web or watching television to activities that help ground us, we’d reap the rewards — men-tally and physiologically. Sally Kempton, a yoga teacher and the author of Meditation for the Love of It, sug-gests using that time for meditation. “Close your eyes and tune into your breath,” she says. “Even when you’re waiting in the checkout line, you can stand tall, feel your feet against the fl oor and breathe into your belly. By taking time to stop, ground your-self and re-balance, you tap into your own deeper fi eld of energy. This has a number of positive eff ects on your brain’s state, your physical health and your capacity to perform at your highest level.” Research shows that meditation can help restore a sense of calm and inner peace. A study that appeared in the January 2011 issue of Psychiatry Research found that those who meditated for 30 minutes a day for eight weeks had a reduction of gray matter in the amygdala, a region in the brain

connected to stress. A 2009 study showed that meditation reduced blood pressure. To learn more about meditation, try pick-ing up a book or taking a class. Practicing a few minutes each day will bring the mind back to the present, helping you let go of jumbled thoughts that may cause anxiety.

hile meditation can help us find a sense of inner calm, learning how to manage stress can also help restore

a sense of peace. Stress has been shown to not only impact us in the short term, but to also cause metabolic changes that con-tribute to poor health down the road. Stress increases the level of the hormone cortisol in your body, leading to higher blood sugar, increased heart rate, increased blood pres-sure and feelings of anxiety, according to Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, M.D., an internal medicine physician and author. Balance, Dalton-Smith believes, is not about eliminating stress from your life, but about fi nding a system that helps you

stabilize your response to it. She suggests that we focus on the things that bring us joy and jettison those that occupy time with-out providing happiness. “A balanced life requires addition and subtraction,” she says. In her own life, which includes managing a demanding career and raising two sons, she fi nds that balance means being truly pres-ent in the moment. To help you return to the present moment, try deep breathing exercises. Place your hand on your belly and close your eyes. Inhale deeply and feel your stomach expand. Exhale and feel it relax. Focus on breathing in and out for a few minutes. Doing this can help you find your center during a busy day.

stress and your sKin

he effects of our crazy-busy lives can also show up exter-nally, on our skin. Stress can aggravate conditions that we

may already be prone to, such as eczema, acne, cold sores or dull skin. Unfortunately, such fl are-ups can make us feel even more anxious. Try adding a balancing beauty rou-tine to your day as part of your “me time.” It will help restore calm and clarity to your largest organ — your skin. Patricia Pol, holistic esthetician at the Weleda Spa in Palisades, NY, says that cortisol, the same culprit Dalton-Smith mentioned, can affect your skin by caus-ing an increase in oil production. “When your body is chronically stressed, your skin becomes out of balance and your protective barrier breaks down. This allows bacteria to get in and moisture to get out, causing the skin to lose its natural radiance.”

t

Less is more when you’re trying to restore balance to your skin, says Pol. “Using many diff erent products in an eff ort to combat an increase in acne or the loss of radiance will only make the problem worse,” she says. “Stress makes your skin more dry, sensitive and reactive. I recommend that my clients use Weleda’s Almond Soothing Facial Care during stressful times to help bring the skin back into balance and restore its protective barrier.” Pol says that some skin soothers don’t come in a bottle, like yoga, dancing, singing, meditation and laughing. These activities will cause your body to produce endorphins that lower stress hormones, helping your body soothe itself. She also recommends creating routines that are about slowing down and being present, such as waking earlier so you don’t have to rush through your morning routine. “A stressful, harried morning sets that tone for the rest of your day,” says Pol. In the evenings, establish a calming nightly routine with Weleda products like the Gentle Cleansing Milk. “Take fi ve minutes at night to wash your face, massage it with Almond Soothing Facial Oil and apply the harmonizing Wild Rose Smoothing Night Cream,” she says. “Take the time to pamper yourself with products that stimulate your senses. Enjoy this moment.” Part science and part soul-seeking, bal-ance is about nurturing yourself in the frenetic, fast-paced world we live in. We may not be able to escape from the city like Margaret Roach did, but we can find our own inner country home through meditation, deep breathing and calming daily routines. The importance of balance doesn’t just lie in the blessing it brings to ourselves — it reverberates to those around us. And it can all begin with a single deep breath. gd

s A PArEnt, you love your baby from the start, imperfections and all. During that precious fi rst year of life, your baby is still developing — both

inside and out. The skin’s natural protective layer, for exam-ple, does not fully form until around age fi ve. As a result, baby skin is delicate and easily susceptible to external irritants and common conditions like eczema and dryness. Many of the conditions newborns experience will go away on their own, but like snowflakes and fingerprints, every baby is diff erent. Fortunately, there are natural, gentle rem-edies that can help heal skin ailments, ease digestive issues and leave your baby smiling. Read on for some of the most common conditions aff ecting newborns in their fi rst year and tips for treating them.

ColiC Moms learn to recognize the reason their baby is crying, whether it’s hunger or a dirty diaper. But if the crying is inconsolable, begins suddenly and for no reason, or is accompanied by changes in posture, your baby may be exhibiting signs of colic. According to Mayo Clinic research, colic aff ects as many as 25 percent of babies, but knowing you’re in good company does not make the situation any less stressful. Causes of colic may include gas, food sensitivity, acid refl ux and irritability.

Different remedies work for different babies, so a trial-and-error approach is most effective. Many moms find that motion works well to help calm a baby. Swinging, bouncing the baby in your arms, rocking in a chair or putting your baby in a carrier where they can feel the warmth and comfort of your closeness can help. Soothing sounds or a lul-laby can often help as well. Giving your baby a tummy massage can help aid digestion, says Patricia Pol, a doula and certifi ed infant-massage therapist at the Weleda Spa in Palisades, NY. She suggests massaging the baby’s belly with Weleda Baby Tummy Oil, which provides natural colic relief thanks to a blend of calming essential oils like marjoram, chamomile and cardamom. “If you’re nursing and believe your baby’s colic could be food related, you may want to try eliminating dairy products, onions, garlic, cabbage, spices and any other poten-tially irritating foods from your diet,” says pediatrician Dr. Michael Allen, board certi-fi ed in Integrative Holistic Medicine. “Then reintroduce these foods one at a time to see what might be causing the problem.” Weleda Nursing Tea, made with digestion-soothing ingredients like fennel, fenugreek and lemon verbena, helps nursing moms with healthy lactation and also aids baby’s digestion.

E C Z E M A This skin condition results in itchy, dry patches often found in the folds of a baby’s skin. Even though eczema is thought to be genetic, it can be triggered by dryness or harsh substances in diaper wipes, detergent, soaps or lotions. While cortisone

cream is often prescribed for eczema, it sup-presses symptoms as opposed to treating them, says Carolyn Dean, MD and author of Homeopathic Remedies for Children’s

Common Ailments. “Instead of simply treat-ing the symptoms,” says Dr. Dean, “the key is fi nding the cause.” Dust and dust mites, for example, are a common culprit. Dr. Dean suggests using dust mite mattresses and pillow cases. Using soothing, natural products like Weleda’s Calendula Baby Care can help as well. The products nourish and protect a baby’s delicate skin with calming plant extracts, natural protective waxes and oils from sun-ripened seeds and nuts.

B A B y A C n E Baby acne is a common condition that can show up in the weeks following a baby’s birth, or just in time for baby’s fi rst photo shoot. “Baby acne is thought to be due to maternal hormones that are passed across the placenta during pregnancy,” says Dr. Allen. “It can be made worse by things that can irritate your baby’s skin, like harsh detergents, rough blankets or sheets and frequent spit-ups.” His advice is to wash baby’s face with a soft cloth and use cotton blankets and sheets. “In time, it will completely go away,” he says. Pol stresses that less is more when it comes to baby acne. “The oil glands are trying to figure themselves out in terms of how much oil they should produce,” she says. “If you try to treat it by bathing the baby too much, it often makes the situation worse.”

Dry skin Just like we do, some babies have a natural tendency toward dry skin.

Bath time, which can be fun and soothing, can also cause a baby’s skin to become dry. Pol says to make sure your baby’s bathwater is not too hot, and she recom-mends adding Weleda Calendula Cream Bath to the water to gently cleanse while retaining moisture. “Weleda products are a good choice because they do not contain irritating synthetic ingredients or artifi cial fragrances,” she says. “After a bath, apply Weleda Calendula Lotion, or if your baby’s skin is especially dry, you may want to use the richer Calendula Baby Cream. Both contain sweet almond oil, which provides the skin with a nourishing, protective barrier.”

tE E t H i n G You will know your baby is teething if they exhibit these tell-tale signs: drooling, irritability and constantly putting things in their mouth. Dr. Allen notes that the average baby will break teeth through the gums at about four months. The most effective treatment is to find what best soothes the gums through trial and error. “Have your baby chew on your finger, a teething ring, or something cool, soft and fl exible,” says Dr. Allen.

After baby’s teeth come in, Pol says you can use Weleda Children’s Tooth Gel by putting it on your finger and rubbing it against their teeth and gums. “The fennel, mint and calendula in the formula have healing properties that will soothe irritated gums,” says Pol, adding that she hasn’t met a baby yet who didn’t love the taste.

CrADlE CAP Often cradle cap develops in the fi rst few weeks of a newborn’s life, but the signs can appear anytime during the fi rst year. “Cradle cap — distinguished by a scaly appearance that looks like dandruff — will often go away on its own as the baby’s oil glands begin to regulate,” says Pol. “In the meantime, you could try this treatment option: Massage Weleda Calendula Oil lightly on the area, wait 15 minutes, and then wash it off with Weleda Calendula Shampoo & Body Wash using a soft cotton washcloth.” Remember, whatever skin condition may pop up in your baby’s first year pales in comparison to the amount of love and aff ec-tion you’ll be showering him or her with. In many cases, a gentle, loving touch — and time — are all you need to keep baby’s skin baby soft and healthy. jk

ot lonG AGo, I visited Grgich Hills Estate, a Biodynamic® vineyard nestled in the middle of California’s beautiful Napa Valley. The sun was

bright, the air was crisp, and the mustard fl owers were in bloom, covering the hills in bright yellow. I listened as our guide, Natalie, told us how Biodynamic® wines are thought to have a strong sense of terroir, meaning they are refl ective of the conditions and characteristics of the land where the grapes are grown. As I sampled a glass of Chardonnay, I could almost imagine that I tasted the minerals in the soil, the wind that blew through the valley and the rainwater that helped grow the grapes. For me, knowing where our ingre-dients come from is beautiful — and powerful. And I think this is as true for the ingredients in our skin care as it is for those in the food we eat and the wine we drink. Weleda’s connection to Biodynamics®, a holistic practice that treats the farm as a living organism, is deep-rooted and goes back 90 years — to the company’s founding. Weleda co-founder, Austrian scientist-philosopher Dr. Rudolf Steiner, developed the principles of Biodynamics® after a lifetime of research. Today, Weleda operates the largest Biodynamic®

plant garden in Europe and uses the method to grow many of the ingredients used in its natural skin- and body-care products. Like organic farming, Biodynamics® shuns the use of pesticides, herbicides and synthetic fertilizers, but it goes one step beyond organic to work with the rhythms of the earth and the cosmos to create a healthy, balanced ecosystem. Here, Ken Morris, communications man-ager at Grgich Hills, shares more information on how the vineyard uses Biodynamics® to grow their award-winning wines.

» Why did Grgich Hills decide to utilize Bio-

dynamics® in its vineyards?

In 2000 we began farming all of our vine-yards organically. In 2002, Ivo Jeramaz, our vice president of vineyards and production, attended a lecture by Nicolas Joly — the most influential Biodynamic® winegrower and the owner of the renowned Loire Valley winery Coulée de Serrant — and he was immediately attracted to Biodynamics®. Coincidentally, in 2003 we had reached a crisis: the Cabernet Sauvignon vines in our Yountville Vineyard, which had been planted in 1959, were suffering from red leaf virus and experts told us to pull them out. Looking to save these old vines, we tried Biodynamic® farming and they imme-diately responded; the vines’ new health allowed the grapes to reach full physiologi-cal ripeness, resulting in richer fruit flavors in the wine. Based on that experience, we began switching all of our vineyards to Bio-dynamic®, and by 2006, all 366 acres had been converted and certified.

» How do you nourish and build the soil?

While organic farming also uses com-post for fertilization, Biodynamics® uses small quantities of natural preparations to enliven the soil. Each of these prepara-tions is diluted and then activated by a

special stirring process known as “dynam-ization.” These minute amounts of natural preparations introduce microbial life and nutrients into the soil and that life repro-duces throughout the vineyard.

» Balance is an important principle in Bio-

dynamics®. How do you achieve balance in

the vineyard?

In a Biodynamic® environment, there is a healthy balance of animals, plants and minerals. As a way of adding biodiversity and attracting beneficial insects, we raise bees and chickens and plant gardens and a variety of shrubs, such as rosemary, lav-ender and sage, as well as trees like apple, pear, cherry, hazelnut, elm and alder. We plant a variety of cover crops like legumes and grasses that prevent erosion and break up compacted soil, and when we chop and plow these plants into the ground, they release nitrogen and add organic matter to the soil. We keep the rodent population under control by placing owl boxes and hawk perches in the vineyards to attract birds of prey.

» How do you control pests and diseases?

Pests and diseases are a natural part of the agricultural cycle. We can never hope to eradicate them entirely, nor is that best for the long-term health of the earth. Rather, we try to minimize their eff ect on the vine by having a healthy vineyard. Much like homeopathic medicine, we work to have the vine heal itself rather than treat the symp-toms. Our biodynamically-farmed vines are like a healthy person with a strong immune system. That person will occasionally get a cold but will be able to easily withstand it and quickly recover, while a person whose defenses are weak could have a difficult time recovering. Also, nature has a way of attacking that which is not natural — if an artifi cial element is introduced into an ecosystem and throws it out of balance, natural defenses will swarm to attack it. With the vine and soil in balance, and with benefi cial microbial life in the soil to counteract any malicious bacteria, the vineyard’s ecosystem can thrive in harmony.

By attuning ourselves to the natural rhythms of the vine, we’re able to antici-pate and prevent problems as well. For example, we’ve noticed that mildew and mold have a tendency to appear shortly after a full moon — the lunar eff ect pulls moisture into the atmosphere. We now spray our horsetail tea preparation, along with sulfur (which is permitted in Biody-namics®), just before the full moon. As a result, we have seen a dramatic reduction in mold and mildew.

» What aff ect do you think Biodynamics®

has had on the taste of the wines?

Our grapes are authentic and distinctive, and they display a better balance between sugar, acid, fl avors and tannins. With Biodynamic®

farming, we can maintain healthy vineyards that will be productive until they reach 80 to 100 years old. These healthy vines produce full-bodied, elegant wines with pure fl avors, intense concentration and a pronounced sense of place. cr

wel lnessuBtlE siGns of AutuMn are all around us: refreshingly brisk mornings, sidewalks dotted with acorns, apples galore at the farmer’s market,

and birds flying south in anticipation of fall’s first frost. These beautiful, postcard-perfect fall days belie the fact that cold and fl u season is quickly drawing near once again. Fortunately, the body’s own self-defense mechanisms work hard to fi ght unwelcome germs, and simple lifestyle changes and natural remedies can help boost the self-heal-ing abilities found within all of us, so we stay well come fall, winter and all year long.

EMBrACE A HEAltHy lifEstylE According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Americans will suff er 1 billion colds this year. The colder months bring us in closer proximity to others, raising our chances of being exposed to a contagious bug. Scientists also believe that cold air can dry out the mucus lining in our nasal passages, making it easier for viruses to get in. one of the most important things we can do to diminish the spread of illness,” she says. Our diet can also have an effect on our immune system and our ability to fi ght pesky germs. Dr. Isadora Guggenheim, a New York-based naturopath, recommends eating fewer foods high in refi ned sugar and carbohydrates. “Viruses and bacterium uti-lize simple sugars to replicate and grow,” she says. “Eating nutritious and warming foods supports healthy digestive function, which plays an important role for the immune system.” Guggenheim adds that probiot-ics — friendly bacteria found naturally in fermented foods and in supplement form — can help recolonize the gut and make it diffi cult for cold-causing bacterium, viruses and fungi to make a home there. Breaking a sweat also has a positive eff ect on our immune system. “Sweating activates our oldest detoxifying pathways,” says Dr. Guggenheim. “The lymphatic system has no central pump. It’s the movements of the body that stimulate the lymph fl ow to moni-tor for microbes that could make us sick.” Simply take a brisk walk to get your lymph system moving.

When hand-washing, eating right and exercise are not enough, Weleda dietary supplements and homeopathic remedies help keep our bodies in balance and sup-port our immune function, says Weleda’s Augenstein. In fact, Weleda was founded exactly 90 years ago to provide a personal approach to health care using natural ingre-dients that support our body’s own healing tendencies. Today Weleda offers 24 over-the-counter remedies and more than 800 homeopathic and anthroposophic prescrip-tion medicines, which Augenstein extracts, distills and compounds in the Weleda pharmacy in Palisades, NY. It’s the process of mixing a plant extract with alcohol or

water, known as potentization, that releases a plant’s active healing substances. Both homeopathy and anthroposophic medicine are holistic approaches to well-ness. Homeopathy uses tiny amounts of natural ingredients, which in large quanti-ties would cause a symptom, to trigger a healing response in the body. Anthroposo-phy, a method of healing created by Dr. Rudolf Steiner, who also founded Weleda, is only slightly diff erent. It takes a personal approach to homeopathy, adapting the remedies and prescriptions based on each individual’s unique constitution and lifestyle. Weleda makes its medicines using organic and Biodynamic® plant ingredients, many from the company’s own gardens in Germany. When it comes to the cold and fl u, Augenstein recommends stocking these three over-the-counter Weleda products in your medicine cabinet: Echinadoron, Ferrum Phosphoricum 6X and Cinnabar Compound. Echinadoron naturally supports the immune system with organically grown echinacea, calendula and chamomile.*

7 Ways to stay Well all year long

1Wash hands often with warm water

and soap for 20 seconds. 2

Get consistently good sleep, at least seven to eight hours each night.

3Eat wholesome, naturally colorful

fruits and vegetables. 4

spice up your life — specifically, your food. Turmeric, cayenne, ginger

and garlic all have germ-fighting properties.

5stay hydrated. Water and herbal

teas help flush the body of toxins and stimulate the lymph system.

6Try dry brushing before bathing. Cir-

cular motions, moving inward from the extremities to the heart, increase circula-

tion and may have detoxifying effects.7

Finish a hot shower with 10 seconds of cold Water to close the pores. It invigo-rates and kick starts the immune system.

Calendula and chamomile contain ben-eficial flavonoids, and numerous European studies have shown that echinacea helps support the immune system when taken at the first sign of a cold. If you do come down with a cold or the flu, Augenstein recommends taking Weleda Ferrum Phosphoricum 6X as soon as your first symptoms occur. These non- drowsy tablets help reduce the inf lammation in mucous membranes that triggers a runny nose. Made from the homeopathically prepared mineral cinna-bar, the belladonna herb and bee venom, Weleda Cinnabar Compound can help soothe scratchy throats. “These homeo-pathic remedies help guide and balance an illness process when it does come,” says Dr. Adam Blanning, a family practitioner in Denver, Colorado. So as summer turns to autumn and then into winter, be sure to eat right, exercise, get plenty of rest and let your immune system do the hard work. Nurture the relationship with yourself, and embrace nature as an ally whose healing substances can help you stay strong. dm and cr

People need nature; we depend on it for many things. A stable climate. Clean air. Fresh water. Abundant food. In celebration of 90 years of sustainability, and as a thank you to our loyal custom-ers, Weleda is donating $25,000 in 2011 to Conservation International, a nonpro t that works to create a healthy planet for the well-being of humanity. We are proud to support their efforts to ensure a healthy and productive planet for us all. Visit CI’s website at conservation.org to learn more about their incredible work.
