    American music is a reflection of its culturally andethnically diverse population.

    The USA has the worlds largest music industry.

    The first American music was played by NativeAmericans. At the beginning of the 17th century,

    immigrants from Europe came and brought their

    musical traditions. Much of todays modern popular music can trace its

    roots to African American blues and gospel music

    from the 1920s.

    We begin withthe

    Blues is a genre that began inthe American Deep South inAfrican American communities.

    It began at the end of the 19thcentury.

    Blues came from spirituals,work songs, field hollers,shouts and chants.

    Blues is known as being verysoulful music.

    Blues lyrics tend to express thesadness that life can bring.

    Blues is the foundation of jazz,rhythm and blues (R&B), rockand roll, and country music.

    The King

    of Blues

    When most Americans hear theword blues, they think ofguitarist, singer, and songwriterB.B. King.

    King was born on September 16,1925 in Mississippi.

    In his youth, he played on streetcorners for dimes.

    Kings big break came in 1956with the hit song Three OClockBlues.

    King calls every one of his guitarsLucille.

    At the age of 76, King continuesto tour heavily, averaging over250 concerts per year around theworld.

    influenced ournext genre

    Jazz is the combination of allthe musical cultures that werehappening in the city of NewOrleans in the 1900s;traditional African drumming,church music, classical music,

    the blues, and more.

    Jazzs most unique quality isimprovisation.

    A jazz ensemble can have manydifferent instruments, but thetraditional jazz quartet includespiano, bass, drums, and eithersaxophone or trumpet.

    Jazz is called Americas onlyoriginal art form.

    Armstrong influenced jazz inmany ways, both with hisincredible trumpet playing andhis singing.

    Before Armstrong, jazz bands

    improvised collectively-Armstrong helped shiftattention to solo performance.

    Renowned for his charismaticstage presence as much for hismusical virtuosity.

    In a racially divided America,Armstrong was popular withboth races, being the firstcross-over artist.

    Jazz is not

    dead!

    At the age of 26, EsperanzaSpalding is one of the mostpopular jazz musicians alive.

    Spalding won the Grammy forBest New Artist against JustinBieber in 2011.

    Spalding is a brilliant acousticbass player and singer. Shealso writes and arranges herown songs.

    Esperanza is being called thehope for jazz because not only

    is her music truly great, butvery accessible to people whoarent musicians.

    Dolly Parton is one of the mostsuccessful female countryartists of all time, with more #1hits than any other musician inthis genre.

    Parton was born in Tennesseein 1946.

    Although now a famous singer,Partons first success was as asongwriter, writing two top tenhits in 1967.

    Parton is now rich and famous,but grew up, in her words,dirty poor. Her family lived ina one room, broken down cabinin rural Tennessee.

    Rock and roll originated in theUS during the late 1940s andearly 1950s.

    It is a combination of blues,country, jazz, and gospel music.

    Although its origins aredebated by historians of music,most agree that it began in theSouthern United States.

    Rock and roll began its declinein popularity in the late 1950sand early 1960s. Even in thisshort period of time, rock androll influenced much of themusic that came after it.

    Elvis Aaron Presley is one ofAmericas cultural icons and iswidely known only as Elvis.

    He was born in 1935 inMississippi, but eventually

    moved to Memphis, Tennessee,where he began his career.

    Elvis was one of the originatorsof rockabilly, an up tempofusion of country and rhythmand blues.

    Elvis had hits in many differentgenres: country, pop ballads,gospel and blues.

    He is the best selling solo artistin the history of popular music.

    Motown is one of Americasmost influential record labels.

    Although still in existence,Motowns most influentialperiod was from 1959-1972.

    Motown was based in the cityof Detroit.

    The Motown Sound is soulmusic with a distinct popinfluence.

    Motowns artists have included

    Stevie Wonder, The Supremes,The Jackson 5 and many more!

    Motown was important in theracial integration of popularmusic because of its crosscultural success.

    American folk music wasrevived as a popular genre inthe 1940s.

    From the beginning, folk musicsongs were written to protestvarious inequalities in American

    society.

    American folk music of the1960s played an important rolein the Civil Rights Movement.

    The sound of folk music tendsto be softer, with acoustic

    guitars and melodic vocals.

    This is a genre that is hard todefine because its roots are inso many different types ofmusic.

    This group, with the famous

    cellist Yo-Yo Ma, is proud thattheir music fits no genre.

    All the musicians in this groupare masters at theirinstruments.

    It originated in the 1970s inAfrican American communitiesin New York City, specificallythe Bronx.

    Top 40 hit.

    brings us to ourfinal genre

    The word pop stands forpopular music.

    Each generation has its ownpopular music.

    Todays pop artists come from avariety of different backgrounds:hip hop, techno, and countrymusic can all be heard in thesenew pop artists.

    Beyonce is one of the worldsbiggest pop artists today.

    She has an all-female band whichtours with her and performs in hervideos. Many of the women inthis band are also talented jazzmusicians.
