A typical gasoline is a mixture of paraffins

    (Alkanes), Naphthenes (cycloalkanes), and

olefins (alkenes). Many countries set limits

    on gasoline aromatics and olefins.

    Catalytic Cracked Gasoline / Naphtha

    HydroCracking

Alkylation: The addition of isobutane to alkenes giving

    branched chains but low aromatics

By-product of natural gas processing: Removal of butane,

propane and large amount of ethane from raw gas.

Petroleum refining: By product of cracking petroleum into

40% of methanol is converted to formaldehyde which

are then made into products as diverse as plastics,

plywood, paints, explosives, and permanent press

    textiles.

In the early 1970s, a methanol to gasoline process was

developed by Mobil for producing gasoline ready for use

in vehicles. To produce MTBE: gasoline additve.

The market became tight because of the ethane prices

falling in the USA, due to the exploration of shale gas

reserves. The low price ethylene produced from this rawmaterial has given chemical producers in North America

    a feedstock advantage.

Such change put naphtha-fed stream crackers at a

disadvantageous position, with many of them shutting

down or revamping to use ethane as feedstock.

The largest single use of ethanol is as a motor fuel and

fuel additive. Brazil relies on ethanol as a motor fuel.

From Sugar Cane. Gasoline sold in Brazil contains at least

    25% anhydrous ethanol.

An important industrial ingredient and has widespread

use a base chemical for other organic compounds. These

include ethyl halides, ethyl esters, diethyl ether, acetic

    acid etc

Feed stock for methlating agent, dimethyl sulfate

Promising fuel in diesel engines. Only moderate

modification are needed to convert a diesel enginer to

    burn DME
