Message from the Acting Vice-President, Academic

It is great pleasure to share with you the schedule for “WellSpring”, our series of in-service professional development workshops which are being offered for all College employees during May and June, 2010. I wish to thank all of our Loyalist College colleagues who have agreed to design and implement these valuable workshops. There is a wide array of topics being offered this year, that will not only provide time for renewal and reflection about teaching and learning, but also will provide some unique ways for us to play, and to refresh and rejuvenate our minds and bodies. I encourage everyone to participate, and if you can, please help to enable your colleagues and staff to participate in these workshops as well. WellSpring – 2010

We are pleased to present you the offerings for this year’s in-house professional development sessions. We here at Loyalist are extremely fortunate to have such a talented, diverse and generous group of people that have contributed their time and energy to this process. Every attempt has been made to vary the nature and timing of the offerings to facilitate your participation in as many as sessions as you can attend.

There are 3 easy steps to the registration process:

1. Browse the offerings and identify the sessions you would like to attend

2. Email [email protected] with your interest – put the session name in the subject line. If the session is offered more than once, indicate which session/date you would like.

3. You will be sent a “meeting request” through your Outlook email that will load the session in your calendar…and will give you a timely reminder as per your notification settings!

Any unforeseen changes (e.g. room numbers, etc.) will be sent as updates through the meeting request.

Please be aware of the registration deadline and sign up for these sessions as soon as possible. This will allow the facilitators to plan their materials, add a session due to popular demand (if able to), or cancel due to insufficient numbers.

Audio Visual and Academic and New Media Services Overview Facilitators: Jennifer Bryan & Christopher Wilms

Join Jennifer Bryan and Chris Wilms as they provide you with an overview of the services offered by the Audio Visual (AV) and Academic and New Media Service groups. Focussing on current technologies available at Loyalist, this session will provide participants with a brief introduction to the different classroom and learning technologies available for faculty and staff use. While not a “hands-on” workshop, participants will leave this session with a better understanding of the services offered and some new ideas for their curricula.

Academic and New Media Services – New Initiatives and Research Facilitator: Jennifer Bryan

Ever wondered if there is more we could be doing to enhance student learning and content retention? Participants in this session will be introduced to the learning technologies currently being researched and tested by the Academic and New Media Services team. Included in this session will be a sneak-peek into some of the large scale initiatives currently planned for future introduction to the college community. Upon conclusion of this session participants will be encouraged to complete an online survey designed to gauge interest at the same time help us determine the focus of future initiatives

Student Response System – Clickers in the Classroom Facilitator: Jennifer Bryan

If you teach with PowerPoint this could be the session for you! The TurningPoint Student Response System integrates with PowerPoint and allows faculty to quickly gauge student concept retention through the use of clickers (remote controls). This session will start with an overview of TurningPoint, the Student Response System currently available at Loyalist, and how a polling system can enhance student learning. From there, participants will work with both new and existing PowerPoint presentations to create T/F or M/C survey style quizzes that can be used in the classroom.

Podcasting – Enhancing Concept Retention Facilitator: Jennifer Bryan

Did you know that the Academic and New Media Services team has iPods and Mics available for you to borrow? Perhaps you are unsure how podcasting can be used in your courses? This session aims at clarifying many of the mysteries around podcasting in an educational context. Opening with a discussion on the latest academic research about podcasting and its use in the post-secondary learning environment, participants will be encouraged to discuss the potential use of podcasting as it relates to their current curricula. From there, each participant will be provided with an iPod and Microphone and given an opportunity to record a short voice file which will be converted and then posted to the LMS.

Teaching and Learning in the LMS Facilitator: Jennifer Bryan

Many faculty and staff use the LMS to post learning materials in both face-to-face and online courses. This session offers participants with guidance on how to design a web-based learning environment that is learning centered and presents content in a sequential format. Geared towards the experienced user, participants will learn how to utilize the functions of the LMS to optimize course delivery and reinforce principles of adult learning. In addition, participants are encouraged to bring a course outline so they can work within a context that is relevant to their current curricula.

Inclusive Post-Secondary Education, Mentorship Event Workshop Organizers: Inclusive Post-Secondary Education Committee

Inclusive post secondary education has proven to be an effective means of enabling individuals with intellectual disabilities, including those with significant disabilities, to pursue their dreams of a meaningful life in their community. The presenters have been including individuals with in-tellectual disabilities in universities and colleges for more than 20 years and will share information from their latest book on inclusive post secondary education. This work shop will illustrate the remarkable success stories from learning and belonging to finding meaningful employment. The experiences of parents, peers and faculty will be shared and information will be provided on how to create and ensure quality inclusive post secondary opportunities.

NB: This is an outside, 1-day workshop, being held in partnership with Loyalist College. Participants of this workshop are responsible for the $20 fee for this workshop (lunch included with workshop fee). See special registration process below.

Continuing Formal Studies on a Part-time Basis Facilitator: Joe Callahan

Old Dogs Can Learn New Tricks

Maybe you think you’re all done with formal education but you should give that some more thought. Imagine the joy of working late nights and early mornings finishing academic papers, participating in online discussions with people half a world away and the satisfaction of an A-. After eight years of part-time study I will finish a degree in Athabasca University’s Master of Arts, Integrated Studies program with an emphasis on Adult Education. This spring I’m completing field research on newsroom practices at Ontario newspapers as part of the program and I will have completed the degree with financial and tangible moral support of the college.

Come to a session to discuss the challenges and rewards of continuing formal education while working as a full-time educator and why you should even consider it.

Teaching Strategies – Idea Exchange Facilitator: Cathy Waite

Kind of like a cookie exchange, without the calories! Bring one teaching strategy idea and leave with many more. Those who sign up for this session will agree to bring a handout describing a creative teaching strategy that they have implemented in their classes and would like to share with others. In small group discussions, we will share our handouts and teaching ideas with one another. Everyone leaves the session with a variety of creative teaching ideas that they can try in their own classes.

Intercultural Communication Working Across Cultures Facilitator: Ben Yang

An increasing number of international students are choosing Canada as their destination for post-secondary education. While international and new immigrant students add cultural diversity and economic benefits to our campuses and communities, they also bring a different set of values, perspectives and communication styles. This session will offer insights on international students’ expectations and experiences during their transition to the Canada; provide analysis on how cultural values and language influence behaviour and affect learning styles. The presenter will also share strategies and best practices in communicating and working with international and new immigrant students achieve desired learning outcome.

About This Presenter - The International Centre and Student Success welcomes Ben Yang to Loyalist College. Ben came to Canada from Beijing China as a graduate student at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education/University of Toronto (OISE/UT) over 20 years ago and has had the first hand experience of adapting to a different cultural and academic environment. From 1998 to 2010, he served as the Director of International Student Centre (ISC) at the University of Toronto. He is a frequent presenter on globalization and cross-cultural communication. His observation and analysis are insightful and inspirational. He has been teaching as an instructor for the International Educator Training Program (IETP) at the Queens’ University for the past 7 years. He also served as the Chair of the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) Immigration Advising Committee.

Violence Prevention and Respectful College Policies Facilitator: Jocelyn Churchill and Janet Mathany

Through cross functional teams, Loyalist College has developed two new policies. The Violence Prevention Policy addresses actions that assist in violence prevention and outlines the process for reporting and follow-up on reports of violent incidents. The Respectful College Policy addresses the options for resolving concerns or complaints of personal harassment or bullying. Come hear how you can contribute to providing a safe and respectful environment for all! This session will be offered twice.

Respect in the Classroom Facilitator: Jim Lees

Jim’s presentation is designed for Loyalist College employees and will be of special interest to those who work directly with students. Jim’s presentation will raise awareness of this issue, make respect a topic of conversation and help us to raise the bar in terms of our expectations of student behaviour as we prepare students for the realities of the workplace. This session will be helpful for faculty and others in terms of providing guidance about engaging cooperation in this environment and he will underscore the need to do this consistently, upfront and openly. This session will be offered on 2 occasions.

About This Presenter - Jim Lees is the Associate Director, Student Success, at Confederation College. He was a faculty member for 14 years in the Child and Youth Worker program before moving to the Counselling Department in 2001. Jim has been a driving force in Confederation College’s Respect Campaign which is now in its fifth year. Confederation’s campaign is recognized as a pioneering initiative in the College System and Jim is in demand as a speaker by the province’s colleges.

Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Facilitators: Vicki Ryckman & Phil Howlett

This course is designed to teach the skills and techniques of non-violent crisis intervention to the human service professional. Develop the skills necessary to deal with assaultive, disruptive, or out of control behaviour. Through a combination of verbal, non-verbal, and physical intervention skills, staff will be able to manage crisis situations safely. This will be a full day session with a 1-hour lunch break.

Emotional Intelligence Facilitator: Ken Brown

This 2-part session will provide you with invaluable insight and tools to identify your personality and communication preferences as well as the preferences of your coworkers and family. The first session will have you work through a personality profile to help you identify what your preferences are...as well as what the characteristics of other profiles are. The second session will have you consider the behaviour of your coworkers and family and how you may be able to "flex" your style to facilitate more effective communication and relationships. Strategies for Enhancing Student Success and Retention Strategies for Student Success Facilitators: David Beer & Gail Orr

Practical Nursing programs across Canada have traditionally experienced high attrition rates especially in the first semester of the first year. Recent secondary school graduates often experience difficulty with the social and academic adjustments required in a post secondary environment.

This presentation will describe the effects of a pilot project focusing on the integration of interventions aimed at enhancing student success in a Practical Nursing program in a community college setting.

This pilot project was created utilizing a variety of initiatives, including individualized learning plans, office clusters, the creation of a “Student Success Hub” and Student Success Mentor positions, as well as the separation of student success initiatives from academic initiatives. This presentation will focus on the identification of common areas of concern, specific interventions aimed at addressing those concerns, and past and present statistics related to student successes. These initiatives are easily transferable to other post secondary programs.

Conclusions and recommendations based upon the results of the pilot project will be reviewed. Ample opportunity for discussion and interaction will be made available to participants throughout the presentation.

Modern AV in the Classroom Facilitator: Christopher Wilms

New AV technologies continue to be integrated into the standard classroom; this session will encompass the various aspects of these new systems, their ease-of-use, and promote exploration in integrating modern AV technology into the classroom environment. A/V technology doesn’t have to be difficult to use, in fact it shouldn’t be, and with the right system it isn’t! Having expanded their current level of AV knowledge, attendees will leave feeling confident, comfortable maybe even excited about incorporating these new technologies into their own classes. If you haven’t yet had opportunity to use one of these new systems, or are just looking for a refresher on them, this session is for you!

TeamBoard Training Facilitator: Christopher Wilms

The faithful blackboard and a little more modern whiteboard are still common sites to see in many classroom environments. Their purpose and ease-of-use are obvious, however with computers becoming an ever increasing necessity in the modern classroom experience there has grown a widening gap between how this classic medium can be integrated at a level that is expected by today’s student. An answer to this expectation exists with the Interactive Whiteboard (TeamBoard), a modern tool that can elegantly bridge this “gap”. This session will explore not only its basic functionality but also highlight and encourage effective classroom integration.

Supporting Students with Disabilities Facilitators: Colleen Orrick & Jennifer Vincent

Statistics show that you have students with disabilities in your classroom every semester. How do you know when to make accommodations? Why should you make accommodations? Won’t it compromise the integrity of your program? What kind of accommodations should you make? We have lots of information, some (but not all) of the answers and a willingness to discuss and problem-solve with you. This session will be offered on 2 occasions.

Program Quality Assurance Facilitators: Jake Sandison, Scott Whalen, Lisa DeAngelis

PQA… A-OK! Quality is nothing new to Loyalist College and the programs we offer. What is relatively new to Loyalist College is the framework for Loyalist Program Quality Assurance (PQA). Many programs have already described their quality processes through PQA, while other programs are either embarking on or will be embarking on this approach. Come interact with faculty who have undergone the internal accreditation program. Faculty will also get an opportunity to start to align their current quality processes with the PQA criteria.

Are you dissatisfied with your course learning outcomes? Are the learning outcomes reflective of what the student will be able to “do”? Is the course assessment authentic and representative of the learning outcomes? Curriculum review and renewal thrives with discussion. Join us as we engage in discussion to clarify the learning (and assessment) to enhance the student experience. Please bring copies of your own course outlines.




American Sign Language - A Great Beginning Facilitator: Heidi Tawse

Come join a member of the Deaf Community and learn some basic signs. This one hour session will be jammed pack with:

• learning a new language • communication tips • becoming aware of some resources you can use on your own

Online Databases Facilitator: Ross Danaher

Easy to use; easy to find -- quality information at your fingertips!

Having access to online resources is convenient, but finding the right content can be a confusing and time consuming business. The library’s databases provide the college community with access to over 14,000 full text journal titles that cover topics ranging from nursing and science, to business, the humanities, and beyond. This session will provide you with an overview of our databases, and will introduce you to search tips and techniques that will help you find quality information in a minimal amount of time.

RefWorks Facilitator: Danielle Emon

is a web-based bibliography manager that allows you to create a personal database of references used for research; format a paper; and generate a bibliography in a standard output styles such as APA, MLA or Chicago style. This session will be three-fold:

1. Using a hands-on approach, participants will open a RefWorks account, learn to add bibliographic citations both manually and electronically, and learn how to create folders to keep their research organized.

2. Using the “Write ‘N Cite” utility, participants will learn how to add “in-text” citations to a Microsoft Word document, then format a paper and prepare a bibliography.

3. Extended uses: a brief discussion of the use of RefWorks for other applications such as shared bibliographies/course reading lists; as a tool to keep track of course pack references, etc.; to keep track of readings for professional and program development, etc.

Participants are encouraged to bring books/journals/documents they would like to add to their account.


Course Packs and Blackboard Copyright Facilitator: Ross Danaher

This session will examine the aspects of copyright in relation to course packs and Blackboard. It will explain the library’s role and procedures for ensuring course packs are copyright compliant. In this session you will learn: What information is required when submitting course packs to the library? Who to contact? What is the timeline for obtaining copyright clearance? Which material must have copyright approval?

Belly Dancing Facilitator: Becky Langman

Want to learn the basics of Belly Dance? Come out for an hour and get to know your body in a whole new way. You will learn some of the basic moves of this graceful and elegant art and have fun at the same time! Class is limited to 12 people so please sign up if you're interested. Come in comfortable clothing and shoes.

This session will share facts and information from Johnathan Safran Foer’s book, “Eating Animals”. This book challenges the reader to think about the choices they make every day as a consumer, a parent, a role model, an animal lover, and as a human being who cares about this planet. The intent of this session is to share knowledge, and generate discussion about the moral and philosophical aspects of our current sources of food, primarily factory farms. Practical resources and strategies will also be provided to show how you can make a difference in your health and the health of our planet.

Iroquois/Haudenosaunee Healing Using Traditional Medicine Facilitator: Suzanne Brant

This workshop will examine a variety of medicine plants, their healing properties and current and traditional Native application. It will provide an increased awareness and understanding of traditional healing practices and science supporting the use of plant medicine. It will examine Native gathering practices including the natural and spiritual laws governing when, where and how to gather medicine.

It will demonstrate how incorporating plant medicine into our current lifestyle can increase our health. This workshop will bring together science and Native culture in a way that will benefit all who participate.

Digital Scrapbooking Facilitators: Sarah Hopper & Jennifer Rosborough

Have you ever wanted your photos and stories made into a book, but lacked the time or the ideas? Come see how fast and easy it can be to turn your photos into a Storybook about your travels, your family, your pets, your priorities or your work (think teaching portfolio, memories of a field trip, etc.) This session will introduce you to Storybook Creator (a free digital scrapbooking program) and Storybook Creator Plus (a purchasable program) and show you a variety of techniques. Bring 40-50 photos on a memory stick to get started on your own Storybook, and be amazed at how quickly you can create! You will work on your own Storybook as well as see demonstrations of some more advanced (but still easy) techniques to try down the line. This session will formally run for 2 hours, with an option to stay for a third hour to apply your newfound skills to work on your digital scrapbook!
