Biographical/Historical Notes

The Wellesley Centers for Women (WCW) was established in 1995 at Wellesley College in Wellesley,Massachusetts when the Centers for Research on Women (CRW) and the Stone Center (SC) mergedinto one organization committed to interdisciplinary gender research. The SC was established in 1981as a research facility focused on psychological therapy and women. Prior to the merger, the CRWand SC were each recognized internationally as being at the forefront of social science based genderresearch. The CRW was originally established as the Center at Wellesley for the Study of Women inHigher Education and the Professions in 1974 through partial funding by the Federation of ProfessionalWomen. The CRW’s name was changed in 1978, reflecting a commitment to broaden the organization’sresearch scope beyond higher education and professions. The merger brought the two women’s researchcenters together under one director and a board of overseers. The WCW’s research on women andimpact on policy and education is broad. Since 1974, the WCW has conducted interdisciplinary studieson issues such as gender equity in education, sexual harassment in schools, child-care, adolescentdevelopment, gender violence, and women’s leadership—studies that have influenced private practicesand public policy. The center continues to provide professional development for educators, childcaregivers, and youth workers that encourage children’s social-emotional development and enhancelearning environments and safety. Other WCW scholars have dedicated themselves to the preventionof psychological problems, the enhancement of psychological wellbeing, and the search for a morecomprehensive understanding of human development through theory development and research. TheWCW’s international collaborations strive to improve the lives of women and girls across the globe.
