President’s Report

Dr Gavin Cho President

I hope everyone has started the new year well and are still enjoying the benefits from time off work over the festive season and the warmer and longer summer days.

Personally, I am having a great summer and I am feeling much more relaxed and refreshed than in previous years, ready to take on new challenges. On reflection, a number of things have contributed including the better weather, having a decent break away in various parts of the North Island over the Stat holiday period, spending time with family & friends but also adding a further 9 days in late January walking the Kepler Track then recuperating in postcard perfect Queenstown & Wanaka - aren’t we fortunate that there are some many

beautiful parts of NZ?

It also helps that I’m also feeling reasonably fit due to regular training for the Tour of New Zealand charity cycle ride which my wife Catherine and I are doing in April.

At work, the staff are happy and the practice is humming along without any major drama – I think we often underestimate the value of our team.

At our weekly staff meeting earlier this week, I had complimented everyone on their ability to manage all the daily challenges they faced in the absence of our Practice Manager who has been away on holiday for a month - this was not only a reflection of the competence and

management skills of each staff member or team, but also significant credit to our Practice Manager. In Prime Practice, the concept of self- managed teams are discussed, and while our practice has not spent much time on this area, this was an example of the staff getting on with the job, and the dentists were able to concentrate their energies on treating their patients.

The beginning of a new year is often a good time to reflect on the past year and think about what’s gone well & what hasn’t. It allows us to congratulate ourselves on the positives and simultaneously encourage ongoing good work, while addressing any areas that need attention. I also try to make this a daily action.

On the topic of community service, the committee sees itself in having a significant role in promoting the value of good oral health through our initiatives, and are encouraged by the ongoing support of the individual members of our branch. This year we will continue with our projects in the financing of two pubic water fountains in the Wellington region. Our water kits project to schools will continue as will our efforts to continue to support the DCM dental service. We do have some challenges in maintaining the DCM service but hope to be able to address some of those this year – if you are keen to find out more or get involved, please let either Sophie McKenna or myself know.

The dental industry and its impact on the environment has been an area I have been wanting to address for some time and I know there are many of you who are doing things individually to make a difference. We hope to start a conversation and perhaps share some tips from each other.

Our branch is fortunate that most of our committee members (many of them long standing) have stayed on for another term, but also look forward to the injection of energy the new committee members will bring.

I look forward to seeing you all at our first meeting in March at The Wellington Club in our new meeting room.

NZDA Wellington Committee Meeting Minutes

Wednesday 14th November 2018 Symes de Silva Conference Room

PRESENT: Drs: Cho, Ichim, Excell, Barnes, Murphy & McKenna Guests: Drs Benn & Nelson

APOLOGIES: Drs Hitchings, Templeman, McKelvey, Ruddiman, Tong, M Wong and A Wong

DCM Update Dr Benn: Dr Cho invited Dr Benn to the Committee meeting to update the new Committee on DCM and as Dr Benn has other commitments this evening she was invited to update the Committee at the beginning of the meeting.

Dr Benn reported that following a meeting with Michelle from DCM, Jane Gaudie, Dr John Buckerfield and herself where cross infection compliance issues were raised again and agreement re confirmed that this will be managed by Jane Gaudi. Dr Benn believes that there is acceptance of this new protocol and that any issues of how the Dental Service is to run appear to be improving. It was also agreed that Michelle would look for funding first aid training for the current DCM staff who DA as they do not have current first aid certificates.

It was agreed at the meeting that an urgent need is the lack of Dental Assistants and it was agreed that an advert will be circulated within the Dental Hygienists / Therapists to see if this attracts any interest.

Dr Cho attended the AGM of DCM and believes the service is at the stage where the Branch needs to ensure continued traction going forward and continue to engage with Wellington Branch Dentists. It was agreed that every other month an article will be included in the Branch newsletter. Dr Benn will approach Michelle for this content.

Dr Benn informed the Committee that she will continue with her commitment to DCM until March 2019 when she will need to hand over to another Branch

member. Dr Cho thanked Dr Benn for the time and commitment she has given to this Branch initiative.

It was agreed that as Dr Buckerfield has retired from Private Practice and would have only applied for and paid for his APC because of his continued commitment to DCM that Dr Cho will approach DCM to see if they are willing to contribute to this cost.

Branch Golf 2018

We enjoyed an increase in participants, a fine day and the generous sponsorship of Henry Schein at the golf on November 30th. A splendid round by Geoff Hunt who shot 83 for 45 stableford points, won the Dental and Medical Cup. Runner up was James Fairhall whose father’s clubs guided him successfully round the course. Frank Van Den Borst with an 85 claimed the Medic DDS Cup for the best gross score, just ahead of David Corcoran.

Chris Seaton with an enormous tee shot of over 270 metres picked up the longest drive and David Chin-Shong, who we welcomed for the first time, won the closest to the pin. It was great to also welcome Mike Engle and Ed Harrison of Henry Schein, our generous sponsor. They had made the effort to come from Auckland to play and provide prizes for the winners. The afternoon appeared to be enjoyed by the group. As well as the competitive aspect, the opportunity to enjoy some exercise with colleagues in a pleasant environment makes the game worth considering for golfers of all abilities. Hope to see you there on Friday December 6th 2019.
