Wellington held its annual House Swimming Carnival last Thursday 12 February at Noble Park Aquatic Centre. There was some concern earlier in the week that we might swelter in the heat as the day prior saw the mercury rise into the high 30s but in true Wellington fashion we got lucky and the weather lead to perfect conditions on the day. High participation rates by all year levels led to a highly competitive day and overall there were 11 records broken, the oldest of which dated back to 1995. A huge thank you to all staff and student helpers who were pivotal in making the day the success it was!

For those following the score at home, the House points awarded were:

Penrhyn 1,695 points Alexander 1,403 points Borowdale 1,213 points

The next round, Monash Division, will be held at Oakleigh Swimming Pool on 2 March and we will take a team of over 40 strong to compete for Wellington. We wish them all the best of luck for the day!

Principal’s Report

Swimming Sports

Our House Swimming Carnival was held last Thursday at the Noble Park Aquatic Park and was a great success. The spirit of all who attended was wonderful and positive, a true reflection of the Wellington Way. Mr Troy Diaz has taken on the role of Director of Sport, Houses, and Fitness for this term, and I thank him and his support team for organising the day and ensuring its smooth running. and good luck to those students who have progressed to the District Finals which will be held on 2 March.

Student Representative Council

The SRC has welcomed a number of new members this year and have already carried out the first fund-raiser for 2015 – the sale of roses for Valentine's Day. Again, this project proved to be a major success, both in terms of money raised as well as hearts gladdened. Thank you to all of those who supported this and well done to Mrs Wandoch and her SRC team on an early and successful start to

fund-raising for 2015.

School Photos

School photos will be taken next week, over two separate days. On Tuesday 24 February it will be Blazered Leaders, students in year 7 (except 7D, 7L & 7M), VCE, VCAL and International Students. On Friday (Feb 27) it will be the remaining students and those who were absent on Tuesday. Students will need to ensure that they are in correct summer uniform.

Student drop-off

Could I please ask, to help ensure the safety of all members of our community, that parents not use Police Road at the front of the College as a drop-off zone in the morning? Also, if you are dropping off in the main car park, please drive as far through as possible before stopping, instead of stopping outside the Wellbeing Centre. These practices are becoming more prevalent and increase the chance of accidents occurring.

3-Way Conferences

Teachers will shortly begin writing the Interim Reports for Term 1 and these will lead into the 3-Way Conferences which will be held on Tuesday 24 March. In planning for these conferences, parents are asked to book interviews via Compass from the start of March. If you have any questions about the process, please contact the General Office.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

As a part of our BYOD program, our IT Department is in the process of readying these devices for distribution to those who have paid in full. If you have paid a deposit but are yet to finalise the payment, please do so soon. The roll-out is now underway and, if you have chosen to participate in the program, your child will receive their device very soon. With over 1000 devices to process, I am sure that you will understand that not all students will receive their device immediately. If you have yet to decide on your participation in the program, I encourage you to join, as these devices will further enhance the education of your child.

Dan ButlerAssistant Principal

Recently, the College was contacted by a former student asking for assistance of our College community with an unfortunate matter.

We regret to report that a former Wellington student, Mr Glenn Forsyth of Carrum Downs, has been reported missing.

Picture right is a recent picture, taken around Christmas 2014. If you have any information, please contact Victoria Police.

Can You Help? Computer NoticeThe IT Department has begun the roll out of the 2015 computer devices to those who have paid in full, but with over 1000 devices to program and hand out it is taking a little longer than initially expected. We ask for your patience and consideration during this process.

Please note that devices that have not been fully paid for will NOT be handed out until they have been fully paid for, so if you have NOT YET paid in full, please do so as soon as possible at the Cashier's office.

This week saw Middle School stage a number of competitions between forms as the 2015 school year began. A highlight of these competitions saw Year 9 forms pitted against each other in that time-honoured test of strength, stamina, determination, and teamwork - the tug of war. The various

forms tested their mettle in front of the Middle School Office under the watchful eyes of Mr Blaikie, Mr Dwyer and Ms Jacobs, and the participation of Ms Chang and Ms Pillay - whether the latter played a decisive role in their match ups is unclear, but their opponents certainly received a psychological boost! Also on hand were student leaders selling refreshments and taking in the action. Well done to all competitors!

SRC - Valentine’s Day

Your SRC presidents for 2015 are Ladan Ibrahim and Kevin Tran (pictured right) and they are working very hard to represent "you". They have attended the first school council meeting and would be glad to hear your suggestions and ideas for making your time at Wellington awesome. Don't be afraid to contact them or any of your SRC representatives. We hope to introduce more of our representatives in the Journal over the next few issues.

Moreover, we are pleased to announce that Valentine's Day came early to Wellington last Friday and for many Friday the thirteenth was very lucky! Nearly 700 roses were processed (pictured left) and delivered and the SRC would like to thank all the Wellington community for supporting this event!

The SRC succeeded in raising $576. This money will cover the cost of a year's sponsorship for our Ethiopian child Yarisa Roman (pictured right), as well as provided a little more money to be contributed to our Student Bursary to assist students at Wellington who might need a little help with the cost of books, fees, uniform or other educational requirements.

Ms Barbara WandochSRC Coordinator

SRC - Red Cross Appeal

Envelopes are available for families to donate to the Royal Children's Hospital through the Schools for the Kids appeal. Ask your SRC representative or contact Mrs. Wandoch in the Hamilton Centre.

Whether it's a major natural disaster or a personal crisis in your own home, Red Cross is there to give immediate and practical help.

Reaching people in remote places around the world rapidly to provide shelter, food and medical help provides a lifeline. Reaching out to those cut off by floodwaters and fire at home reassures and sustains.

Re-connecting families or finding out the fate of loved ones torn apart by war or disaster lets people get on with their lives. A hot meal for someone living rough means making a connection when it seems no one else is there to help.

Red Cross is amongst the first to arrive and the last to leave when disaster strikes and is an important part of our local communities every day. We are calling on our Year 12 students to be local heroes and assist the Red Cross with its doorknock appeal in March.

Student Engagement, Leadership, and Acceleration

During the summer holiday, To Lien Tia, Leang Tang, and Kate Ho of Year 11 attended the ConocoPhillips Science Experience Program at Monash University at Clayton. The science experience program was for three days running from 13-15 January. The program aims to inspire and stimulate the young minds in year 9 and 10 and develop further their passion for Science and Mathematics. It is run by the Young Scientists of Australia (YSA).

Ms Geetha Rangarajan

Here is a brief account of their experience in their own words.

During the program, we were given opportunities to experience different areas of Science and Mathematics, such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geoscience, and Mathematics. We were amazed to learn that science fiction movies influenced the creation of modern technologies such as the Taser and Levitation, which in turn led to new discoveries in medicine benefiting the whole community.

One unforgettable experience we had was in learning how to apply new knowledge to a realistic situation, for example the egg drop competition where we were given limited of materials to make a cage for an egg. The aim was to save the egg when it drops at target height. We also had challenging and interesting experiences in Mathematics that was totally different to what we usually do at high school. We used patterns, rules and codes to solve problems.

We got to see in detail of different orangelles under the fluorescence and electron microscope. We used the microscope to detect the chemical changes within the cell and determine if a cell is cancerous or not. We can then predict the symptoms and reason out why that cell was damaged.

The experience wasn't just about Science and Mathematics, we also made new friends who shared the same passion. We also had fun hitting the dance floor at the Science Experience's disco party. Not only that we also had fun playing with the very expensive electron microscopes and we learnt to make the best paper planes ever.

‘My favourite part of the whole program was visiting the anatomy museum and looking at how body parts which look so different in real life compare to the textbook. It really gives me a insight into medical field.’ – Tolien

‘My favourite part of the science experience was the science show, which proved that magic is not real, it's just science and some quick hands.’ – Leang

‘I like the 'Mathemagic' which applies the patterns in real life to solve problem. They showed us how to do magic with cards and tricks that you can use for entertainment’ - Kate

On Friday 6 February, Wellington's Year 12 Chemistry classes attended an excursion to the Chemistry Faculty of the University of Melbourne. There they investigated and learnt about some of the analytical instrumentation that are frequently used in many laboratories and research facilities today.

With some guidance from the university tutors and post graduate students our year 12s conducted some experiments using these industrial instruments to measure the caffeine content in cola and calcium concentration in ocean water.

Overall it was an extremely enlightening experience as the students were able to experience firsthand the type of work that is undertaken within a workplace laboratory. An example of this can be seen in the image at right, where Pouya Heidari (one of our Year 12 VCE chemistry students) using atomic absorption spectroscopy to sample some ocean water and determine the calcium content that is present.

Careers In Health

We are pleased to announce that all year 11 and 12 students are invited to attend an information evening regarding future careers in health and healthcare, to be held on Wednesday, 4 March at Nazarath College. Students MUST book to attend and are requested to add their names to the list currently posted outside the Senior School Office.

We would also like to invite all year 12 students to enter a competition to observe a surgery. Entrants do not need to be aspiring doctors or nurses, your curiosity is enough! To enter, students need to compose and email a 200 word entry by Friday 27 February. One student from our school will be chosen for this opportunity - good luck!
