things I could do with it (besides playinggames). When the first session of ALI came toan end I knew that there was so much morethat Christine could teach me and that is why Irepeated the program.

The next session, I worked on perfecting myresume and learning as much as I could on thecomputer. I mostly focused on my keyboarding. At the end of the second session, I had enoughconfidence in myself to apply for the competi-tive MediClerk program and I was accepted!

The MediClerk program is designed to preparestudents to work in the medical field and it wasvery intense. In the course I learned aboutmedical billing and medical terminology. If I had not completed the ALI program, I wouldhave been totally lost. I was determined to getas much as I could out of every class.

Once again, I drove my computer teacher(Margo) nuts with all my questions but it didn’tbother me. I was on a mission…a mission tolearn. I was rarely absent and worked very hardin my classes, particularly my keyboardingclass. I will always be grateful to my teacher,Steve, because he taught me different key-boarding techniques and praised me when Istarted to improve my accuracy and typingspeed. Also, while in the MediClerk program,

I perfected my resume and learned valuableinterview “do’s and don’t’s.” Guest speakersand recent MediClerk graduates helped prepareus for interviews and gave pointers on jobsearching. At graduation, I gave the commence-ment speech. I was nervous at first but in theend I believe my speech came out pretty good!

After graduation, I was unsuccessful in hearingback from the jobs that I had submitted resumesto. I was disappointed. One day, I decided towalk into a local business. It was not hiring butI handed my resume to the owner in hopes thathe would consider me for future employment. The next day, he called and two days after that,I was an employed woman. Three days later,my wage was adjusted and I was making abetter paycheck than I’ve made in years! Myboss told me that he was impressed with myrecent computer courses and that made himfind me a position in his company.

I would highly recommend these two programsto anyone that is looking to improve themselvesand trying to better their chances of getting ajob that not only brings in good wages, but ajob that makes you feel proud of yourself.Thank you Wellspring House.

A very grateful graduate, Debbi Silva

WELLSPRING’S HOLIDAY STORE: IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE TOYS…

kk

I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part ofWellspring House. In many ways, I feel like I’vereceived way more than I could possibly give.Wellspring is so much to so many people, but tome my heart belongs to the Holiday Store and I’llexplain why. For many years I donated toys to thestore because someone asked me to. A few yearsago I was asked to help organize the store. Icouldn’t believe the amount of toys and the number of people who were in need. In our ownback yard? In our bucolic North Shore? Yes.

This year we expect to help over 500 childrenfrom 225 families on Cape Ann. Participants signup in advance to attend this annual event.Executive Director Kay O’Rourke explains, “Westarted the store sixteen years ago because wesaw parents skimping on rent and utility paymentsin order to make sure their kids could haveChristmas. Then come January these familieswere often in trouble with their housing becausethey really didn’t have the economic means tocatch up on the missed payments. The HolidayStore ensures that the family can celebrate theholiday together without becoming homeless later.”

On December 8th and 9th, we will transform 302Essex Avenue into a REAL toy store, complete

with holiday music, a blazing fireplace, homemadedinner and personal shoppers. Each participantsigns in (by appointment) and meets with a “per-sonal shopper” to shop for their children. Parentspurchase three gifts for each child. They areallowed a small, medium and large gift for eachchild and are charged $2.00 per child. Many of ourparticipants save the money to make this happen,a great source of pride and empowerment. Ienjoyed greeting a woman at the door and askingher how old her children are. “You have a 6 yearold daughter, I have the perfect place to startlooking — let’s go”. We walk through the storetogether, hopeful, to choose the perfect gifts.

Every family receives a book for each child, wrap-ping paper, a Christmas ornament and a takehome meal. After the shopping, we sit in thekitchen and enjoy a homemade dinner together. Some of the best conversations I can recall are inthat kitchen over a bowl of spaghetti. I listened to women who have had some bad times and hadlost all hope. I knew in my heart that if I could getthem to believe in themselves, even a little bit, itcould be a game-changer. I remember sitting witha woman last year who told me she was “too stu-pid” to enroll in our MediClerk program. I told her

the past does not equal the future and that sheseemed very smart to me. She had tears in hereyes and told me that no one had ever called hersmart before. Really? After a little coaxing, shedid make a commitment to come back and let ushelp her. It’s about empowerment. It’s about hav-ing the opportunity. It’s about showing them thatWellspring’s doors are open and there are peoplehere who are committed to helping you – 100%.It’s about us getting together as a community inthe spirit of what is right and what is just. It’sabout teaching our children that we are all goodpeople and that everyone deserves to be treatedwith kindness and respect.

Please help us with our Holiday Store by donatingtoys, holding a toy drive, stocking the shelves orbecoming a personal shopper. It’s a great opportu-nity to bring your children (age 7+) in to volunteerwith you. Please call Katie at Wellspring 978-281-3558 x301 to be a part of this amazing weekend. The Holiday Store takes place Saturday andSunday, December 8th and 9th.
