Grace and Peace in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

Church signs can be a great way to communicate a particular message to those who pass by the church. However, sometimes they carry an unintended message like the one that said: “WE CARE ABOUT YOU.” Underneath in smaller letters it said, “Sundays 11 A.M. Only.”

The truth is we really do care about you! As summer unfolds and as many of you travel to different vacation locations to spend some quality time with your families we pray for your safety in your travels and in your time together. I hope you and your family are able to take some time to get away from the everyday tasks of life and are able to spend some fun time just being family together.

I’m excited about our preaching series for the next 5 weeks. We are focusing our worship in the book of The Acts of the Apostles. This is the story of the spreading of the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ, throughout the world. It is the story of the church, but most importantly, it is our story.

I hope you will plan to be with us as we journey through this wonderful account of how the Good News of Jesus Christ turned the world upside down! The following weekly reading plan will prepare you for worship and guide you as we gather each week.

God bless each of you as we “summer” together!

Deep and authentic community We all long for deep and authentic community, and if we are honest, we don’t always find it within the doors of our church. Sometimes FVUMC can feel big and impersonal, and you might feel like you are lost in it.

This fall, we are launching a program called Covenant that we pray brings many in our church into authentic community and deep exploration of God’s Word.

So, what is Covenant?Covenant Bible Study works on the basis of Life Groups where people form genuine relationships as they study the Scriptures together. This is not “just a Bible study” where you learn stuff. This is a transformational experience that can greatly change and shape our church community.

Learning God togetherStarting in September, Covenant begins guiding the themes of our Sunday messages. Adults will study in new Covenant Life Groups or in their existing

Sunday School classes and small groups. Covenant will also shape our youth and children’s ministry.

For everyone, Wednesday night starts with gathering for a meal together from 5:30-6:30pm

and then participating in Life Groups for youth and for adults from 6:30-8:00pm.

Bible StudyAs you participate in Covenant, daily emails are delivered to your inbox which include the full text of the Bible readings. The program is organized into three 8-week segments exploring a third of the Bible. Creating the Covenant begins in September, and goes through October. In the new year, the study continues with Living the Covenant and Trusting the Covenant. Our schedule pauses during special seasons including Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas, Holy Week and spring break.

Come to the tableWe are studying the Bible together as an entire church and seeing what God will do in our midst! Be looking for the ways you can sign up for Covenant and get connected to a Life Group.

Occasionally on Sunday mornings, you will find an envelope tucked inside the worship bulletin.

In the event you are curious as to how those envelopes come to be in your hands on Sunday morning, let me shed some light on the matter.

Within The United Methodist Church, there are six “Special Sundays with Churchwide Offerings” that have been approved by General Conference. The six special Sundays witness to the nature and the calling of the church. They are observed annually.

When one of the six Sundays is celebrated, we recognize the day with a video or explanation during the worship service.

Periodically, it is good to be more intentional about those Sundays in an effort for greater awareness. The descriptions below were taken from The United Methodist Book of Worship and The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church.

Human Relations DayHistorically, it is observed on the Sunday before the observance of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. This Sunday occurs

during Epiphany, the season of manifesting God’s light to the world. (Book of Discipline, p. 294) This day calls the Church to recognize the right of all God’s children to realize their potential as human beings in relationship with one another. This day invites the Church to be intentional in our work toward better human relations.

One Great Hour of SharingHistorically, it is observed on the Fourth Sunday in Lent. Lent is the season of repentance, self-examination, and awareness of the hurts of the peoples in the world. (Book of Discipline, p. 204) This day calls the Church to share the goodness of life with those who hurt. Gifts support the world-wide work of United Methodist Committee on Relief.

Native American AwarenessHistorically, it is observed on the Third Sunday of Easter. This Sunday reminds the Church of the gifts and contributions made by Native Americans to our Church and society.

Peace With Justice Historically, it is observed on the First Sunday After Pentecost. Pentecost celebrates the

outpouring of the Holy Spirit calling for God’s shalom. (Book of Discipline, p. 206) This Sunday witnesses to God’s demand for a faithful, just, disarmed, and secure world.

World Communion SundayHistorically, it is observed on the first Sunday in October. This day calls the Church to be the universal, inclusive Church. Gifts on this day support scholarships for national and international graduate students.

United Methodist Student SundayHistorically observed on the last Sunday in November, this day calls the Church to support students as they prepare for life in uniting faith with knowledge. The offering supports United Methodist scholarships and the United Methodist Student Loan Fund. (Book of Discipline, p. 205)

Celebrating Your SupportThank you for your attentiveness to the six “Special Sundays With Churchwide Offerings” throughout the Church year!

Finance Committee UpdateWe are almost to the halfway point for the year, and our financial position and attendance figures continue to be strong. We are still running close but a bit behind on receipts; however, spending continues to be lower than anticipated, so our net position is better than budgeted thus far for 2014.

The summer months are historically lower for ministry contributions. Please keep in mind that church expenses continue in the summer just as in all other months. Perhaps this is a great time to consider an automatic payment plan? If you are interested, you can contact Joan Thomas, Director of Finance & Administration, in the office for more information. As always, we thank you for your contributions of time, energy, financial resources, prayer and fellowship. Our church is a vibrant community of believers who are there for each other, and we are all truly blessed to be a part of it!

If you have a question or would like more information than we have shared in the bulletin or in these newsletters, please feel free to call me at the number listed below or call Joan Thomas. You are also welcome to attend any Finance Committee meeting. They are held the last Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm at the church.

Staff Parish UpdateWe are pleased to announce that Julie Brown has moved to fill our new Director of Communications position. Julie brings many years of experience working with non-profits on website development, writing/editing, and graphic design, and we are pleased to have her share her gifts with us.

We continue our search for a new Director of Children and Family Ministries and have some good candidates lined up to interview.

Finally, we have come to realize that our music ministry is in need of greater staff support. Unfortunately, Ted Willis is not available to provide more support than he currently does, and we have started a national search for a new part-time Director of Traditional Worship.

Giving ThanksDear FVUMC,

We want to thank all of you so very much for your abundant generosity in allowing Wake Tech Community College to help students improve their English here at your church. Here are just a few of their stories:

One of my male students was a teacher of ethics in a high school in Columbia. He and his sister have founded a charity that cares for the physical and spiritual needs of unwed mothers. Juan is here improving his English skills so that he can return to Columbia better equipped to influence young people.

Two of my female students are here in the U.S. because of the very difficult and destructive war in Sudan. They were refugees that fled to Egypt because of the fighting in Sudan. They love their country, but it isn’t safe for them. They both work at Walmart at night to help support their families.  Life isn’t easy here, but they are thankful that it is a safe place for their children to grow up.

One of the women from Egypt was a well-known journalist who once interviewed their prime minister. Another student, a former bank manager from Haiti, moved to the U.S. so that his

infant son could receive the medical help for a cleft palate. He loves God so much that his class presentations often relate to his faith; he’s spoken on topics like “Why Marriage Is Holy to God” and “How a Man Should Love His Family.”

A student from Morocco shared about why Muslims celebrate Ramadan. I had never realized that it was one way that Muslims learn to empathize with those who are hungry and that they increase their giving to help the poor during this month of fasting.

Several students in our group left their home countries at great cost because they did not feel safe there. Some of them cannot return home for complicated reasons. These students derive great encouragement from each other as fellow travelers and bicultural people.

Learning and growing in their ability to thrive in this country through speaking better English opens many doors for our students, both through education and better employment.

We are truly grateful for the opportunity that FVUMC provides to these students by allowing us to meet at your facility and are thankful for your partnership with us in this important ministry!

Sincerely,    Ann Lawton and her ESL class

Next DivorceCare Session Starts July 28Do you know someone who is hurting from divorce? If you do, make sure he or she knows about DivorceCare at FVUMC. It might just be the best thing you could do to help.

This is an on-going, confidential group ministry that people who are hurting from divorce or separation may join at any time.

Each session is 13 weeks and meets on Monday evenings from 7-9:00pm. A new session begins July 28.

The DivorceCare ministry at FVUMC provides a special weekly seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced.

This ministry has helped our church family members, as well as many people from our community who are working to heal the pain that comes with the breakup of a marriage.

For any questions, please contact: Thearon Willis at [email protected] and Jane Gue at [email protected].

Pillowcase Party Coming in AugustDo you have a sewing machine? Do you remember how to thread it? Can you sew a straight seam (at least some of the time)? Even if you answered “No” to these questions, you are still invited to join our church’s Quilting with Faith quilters for a fun evening of food, fellowship, and sewing on Friday evening, August 22 from 6:30 to 10:00 PM.

After a light salad bar supper, members of our quilting circle will guide participants in making a pillowcase which will be completed that evening. Pillowcase kits will be available for purchase or participants can bring their own fabrics. Some pillowcases will be donated to local hospitals for use with children. Mark the date on your calendar and look for more details in the bulletin.

Company’s Coming and You Can Help! The week of July 13-19, FVUMC is hosting homeless families who are in the Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network (WIHN) program. This ministry needs your help to welcome families by providing meals, setting up, cleaning up, visiting in the evenings, driving families from Raleigh to FVUMC, or spending the night with our guests. Call Sandra Bass with questions (919-552-9647) and sign up on the board in the lobby!

Quilt Sale for Missions Watch for early glimpses of selections from our Quilting with Faith group’s quilt sale set for Saturday, October 18 to raise money for missions of the church. Quilts, table runners, and wall hangings will be available. Buyers will identify the mission to which the proceeds are donated!

Congratulations!Elementary school-age children, Eve and Catherine Moxin and Harper Franks, raised money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation on June 6-8 at the Fuquay-Varina Kroger. These girls sold lemonade with the proceeds going to childhood cancer research. They raised over $1,800 in person and over $200 online for a total of over $2,058. Eve, Catherine and Harper show us that we can all serve God and share God no matter our age. Way to go, girls!

Clothing Closet Give-Away Is August 2 The Clothing Closet is a ministry offering clothes for those in need in the church and in the community, and at the same time, gives us the opportunity to be good stewards by sharing our gently-used clothes.

This community-wide outreach is held once per quarter. Our guests receive a joyful Christian welcome, breakfast, printed devotion and plenty of help to shop and freely take whatever they need. Get involved and help this ministry—many ways are noted below.

Before the event:

1. Donate clothing items in the sheds located in the rear parking lot of the church. It is VERY helpful if you sort your donations by gender/size and mark that information on each bag

2. Contribute trash bags

3. Donate baked goods/breakfast items for the shoppers

Set-Up (Wednesday-Friday):

4. Help with childcare for volunteers’ children during set up times

5. Wednesday, July 30 at 7:00 pm — Help bring the items from the sheds to the church. Trucks needed!

6. Thursday, July 31 and Friday, August 1 from 8:30am to 6pm — Help set up the “shopping departments” on the adult wing of the church

At the Give-Away on Saturday Morning

7. Saturday, August 2 from 8-10am — Greet our guests, and help them shop

8. Help with cleanup Saturday after the give-away

VBS 2014: Thanks to EveryoneThank you, thank you to all the people who helped out with VBS 2014! Thank you to the many volunteers who worked with our children during the evening and daytime sessions. Thank you to everyone who donated supplies and to groups who were flexible in shifting their meeting rooms so that VBS had the space needed.

We had a successful VBS with over 300 children in attendance! Children visited the Workshop of Wonders where they learned that the ordinary becomes extraordinary with God. They learned how to imagine creative solutions to problems with the story of Esther; how to build our lives with God in the story of Ezra rebuilding the Temple; how to grow in our faith with the parable of the mustard seed; how to work with God in serving others with the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000; and how to walk with God all the days of our lives with the story of the disciples on the Emmaus Road.

We participated in mission by donating school supplies to children in need here in Fuquay-Varina and around the world and by donating money to Habitat for Humanity Wake County so homes can be built for people who need a safe place to live.

We praised God with uplifting songs, made neat crafts, ate yummy snacks, and played silly games. This week made an impact in the lives of children from our church and community, and we could not have done it without your prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Thank you!

We also celebrate that the youngest children of VBS volunteers were also in the spirit of Vacation Bible School while in the nursery during the week of VBS. They listened to VBS music, attended the opening and closing assemblies, and made crafts.

Thank you, FVUMC,for your prayers, gifts, and encouragement as I have transitioned to become an Associate Pastor at Trinity UMC in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. It has been hard for me to leave you all, but I must remain faithful to God’s calling on my life.

In a short period of time you have become my friends and NC family. I am forever grateful to all of you for your friendship. You have taught me so much about serving in a United Methodist church. I will be a better pastor because of your influence.

As FVUMC prepares for a new Director of Children’s Ministries, I know that you will welcome the next Director with open arms just as you welcomed me.

God is going to do great things through the Children’s Ministry. You will be in my thoughts and prayers as a new Children’s Director joins the FVUMC family.

Love and prayers, Emily

Fun Fact: We partner with other local United Methodist churches to share decorations for Vacation Bible School. This year, we worked with First UMC of Fuquay-Varina to make different decorations. After First UMC and FVUMC have our VBS weeks, we are then passing the decorations on to Kipling UMC. We are truly a connectional church and support each other!

Sunday School leaders neededWe need Sunday School leaders for the 2014-2015 Sunday School year! Consider volunteering your time leading children at either the 9:30am or 11:00am Sunday School hours. The church provides the lessons and all supplies. If you love children and want to serve here at FVUMC, then Sunday School is for you!

Hi to all from the Preschool!  We are now in the midst of summer camp & having exciting, fun adventures with our summer themes.  We still have a couple of openings in our 3-year old Tuesday/Thursday classes starting this fall.  If anyone is interested please give me a call. I hope you all have a restful, rejuvenating summer.

Blessings, Ms. Lynne

July 6 – Treasure Words (Psalm 119:11)The church teaches us God’s Word. God’s Word, the Bible, is like a priceless treasure. God speaks to us through the Bible, and we can always learn something new. Take time to explore the Bible this week. Find a favorite passage and share it with your family members.

July 13 – Welcome! (Matthew 10:40)We welcome people to church. Jesus tells us to welcome others for when we do it is like we are welcoming Jesus. We have a greeting ministry here at FVUMC. Sign up to be a greeter and welcome people to church.

July 20 – Faith in Jesus (Romans 10:17)The church teaches us about Jesus. It does not matter how young or how old you are, anyone of any age can have faith in Jesus. What do you love about Jesus? Take time to share what you love about Jesus with your family.

July 27 – God created people (Genesis 1:26-27)God created the world and its people. We are created in the image of God. Draw a detailed picture of everyone in your family including hair color, eye color, height, etc. Look at the finished picture and imagine God. What is God’s image?

9:30am Sunday School (Preschool and Elementary)

11:00am Sunday School(Elementary Only)

July’s Theme: Prayer and Praise

July’s Memory Verse: “Shout triumphantly to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with celebration! Come before him with shouts of joy!” Psalm 100:1-2

July’s Leap of Faith:

I can show my love to God with prayer & praise.

July 6 – Psalm 100God is good, and God’s love lasts forever! Share with your family some of your favorite praise and worship songs. Play them and have a sing-a-long or dance party to praise God.

July 13 – Psalm 150 Praise God! Praise God at church, in your homes and wherever you may go. Praise God with singing and by playing musical instruments. Let all living things praise the Lord!

July 20 – Solomon’s Prayer (1 Kings 2:1-4; 3:1-28)God appeared to Solomon in a dream and asked Solomon what he wanted from God. Solomon asked for wisdom. As King, Solomon continued to pray to God. He asked God for wisdom and for guidance. Like Solomon, we can ask God to give us what we need. We can ask for God’s guidance in our everyday lives. What are some things that you can ask God for this week?

July 27 – The Tax Collector and the Pharisee (Luke 18:9-14)

Jesus tells a story about a Pharisee and a tax collector praying in the Temple. The Pharisee stands apart from all of the other people and prays to God. He told God about all of the good things he had done, and he even boasted that he was not like all of the other people out there. The tax collector bowed his head and prayed a simple prayer asking God to show mercy to him for he was a sinner. Which person was more faithful in prayer – the Pharisee or the tax collector? How then should we pray? Take time this week to pray to God and to confess any sins or mistakes. Ask for God’s mercy.

11:00am Sunday School(Preschool Only)

We ask God for what we need.

July 6 – David asks God to help him be brave (1 Samuel 21:1-15; Psalm 34:4-7)

King Saul was mad at David and wanted to hurt David. David ran away from King Saul. David was scared, and he asked God to help him be brave. What makes you feel afraid? The dark? Snakes? Being alone? Share the things that you are afraid of with your family. Then, whenever you are scared, take time to pray to God to ask God to be with you and to help you be brave.

July 13 – David asks God what to do (1 Samuel 23:1-12)

King Saul was chasing David. David did not know what to do or where to go. David prayed to God and asked God for help. Pray with your family: “Dear God, sometimes it is hard to know what to do. We sometimes are scared or confused. Help us to know what you want us to do. We trust you, God. Amen.”

July 20 – David prays when he is hiding (1 Samuel 23:13-29; Psalm 63)

David ran away from King Saul. He hid in the wilderness while King Saul was looking for him. David hid behind a big rock, and King Saul did not find him. Play hide and seek with your family. Have the hiders pretend to be David while the seeker is King Saul. Take turns playing the different parts.

July 27 – David asks God to keep him safe (1 Samuel 26:1-25; Psalm 54)

David was hiding in the wilderness, and he heard that King Saul was back looking for him. David prayed to God to keep him safe while King Saul was after him. God heard David’s prayer, and God hears our prayers, too. Pray with your family asking God to keep you safe before you drive in the car. Pray, “Dear God, watch over us and keep us safe while we are driving to ________. Please keep other people safe on the road, too. We love you, Amen.”
