Wembley Primary School NEWSLETTER No. 5 - 23 April, 2020 From the Principals Transition to Remote and Flexible Learning We would like to acknowledge all students, parents and staff members for your incredible persistence and RESILIENCE this past week as we have transitioned together as a community to remote and flexible learning to support our number one people – our students! We understand that this has not been an easy process and we are focused on working together as we continue to adjust to this new way of learning and teaching. Once we have settled into this new way of learning and teaching in the coming weeks, we will be seeking feedback from our community. Watch this space! Beginning this weekend, on Sunday evening, teachers will be uploading a summarised version of the weekly overview, including Monday’s detailed lesson overview and tasks, between 6:00-6:30pm. Moving forward, each day between 6:00-6:30pm, the subsequent days lessons will be posted on your child/rens Google Classroom. It’s important for families to understand that this is to support parents and students in their preparations for the following day. Whilst teachers will be posting this information in the evening they will be connecting with students and parents during school contact hours. The teacher/s welcome video will continue to be posted in the morning. We thank those of you that have shared kind acknowledgements and feedback with our staff members (including teachers, support staff, IT technicians, office staff and our leaders) in the form of emails and phone calls. We greatly appreciate your understanding and support as we navigate the challenges that have presented - together. We are learning too! Below the newsletter items you will see student work samples from prep through to year 6 showcasing some of the learning experiences that students have been engaging in online! Introduction (give your opinion):

I believe our school should get a swimming pool.

Reason why you think this:

We could learn how to swim.

Elaborate (tell me more):

No one would drown if they went to the beach.

When we know how to swim we are safer near the water.

Reason why you think this: No paying for swimming

Elaborate (tell me more):

The school would save thousands of dollars on school trips.

We wouldn’t need the bus to take us to lessons. We would only need a swimming teacher.

Reason why you think this: Swimming helps make you more athletic.

Elaborate (tell me more):

We would be more fit.

There are other sports you can do, like water aerobics, diving, water

polo,synchronised swimming.

Conclusion (restate your opinion)

:I believe that the school should get a swimming pool.

Swimming is FUN!!!! .

Prep Enrolments 2021 Thank you to all parents who have already enrolled their child/ren for the 2021 school year. If you have not already done so, I would encourage you to complete the enrolment form and return it as soon as possible. This will help us with our planning for the new school year. Enrolment forms can be printed from the school’s website.  Message from Commonwealth Bank  The health, safety and wellbeing of our communities and our people remains our highest priority. Due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding coronavirus, the School Banking program will remain on hold.    In the meantime, here are some handy online resources for parents who wish to maintain momentum with their child’s financial education:

● Start Smart: these resources have been created to improve children’s money management skills, and are aligned to the Australian Curriculum and the National Consumer Financial Literacy Framework.

● The Beanstalk: offers videos and fun activities for children to learn about money.  Year 6 Canberra Camp In week 7 of Term 1, 94 of our Year 6 students spent a week in Canberra, on an educational tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy, creating a real world link with our current studies of Civics and Citizenship.    Together we visited: Parliament House, Government House, the National Museum and Gallery, Telstra Tower, the Electoral Education Centre, Old Parliament House (the Museum of Democracy), Embassy Drive, The Royal Australian Mint, Questacon, the Australian War Memorial and also had time to fit in a quiz and disco!   Students were highly engaged in activities and tours, particularly at the House of Representatives, the Senate and the Electoral process, owing to their in class learning and role playing. Many students commented on how much we covered, but also how much they enjoyed each day, “it was educational and fun!” commented Carly Campanella from 6A.   Thank you very much to our parent helpers, Jonathan Pipke, Tenille Davis, Paris Wojniak and Pat Panetta for spending the week with us in Canberra, to support our Year 6s in having the best possible experience on their last primary school camp. Thank you also to our Year 6 teaching team, Kristen Kosowski and the WPS leadership team for all of the organisation and coordination it requires to make camps like this happen successfully.
