If an absence can't be avoided, students must turn in a written excuse to their 1st period/ HR teacher.
3 unexcused absences >>> phone call home. 5 unexcused absences >>> referred to the WPS attendance coordinator.
10 unexcused absences >>> referred to the Preston County Schools attendance coordinator. In addition, for the purpose of incentives, 3 tardies = 1 absence.

Miss School Miss Out!Students are responsible for making up all missed work. A student has the number of daysabsent plus one more to turn in all make-up work. Teachers may allow additional time as
s/he sees appropriate.
Students MUST have a hall pass from their teacher at all times when out of theclassroom. If students need something in between classes, they MUST go to their next class
first and get a pass for the office, nurse, counselor, or another teacher. You are responsible for getting to class on time.

Guard your planner with your life!
Students must have their planner in EVERY class EVERY day! Students need the planners tostay organized, track grades, and to keep track of goals and progress. If a planner is lost,
students will need to pay for a replacement.

For 3-8th graders, lockers are aprivilege! Students must keep them
organized and clean (no food or rottenmilk). Respect yourself by respectingyour space! Lockers must not be
shared and are subject to search atany time. Locker checks will occur a
minimum of once a quarter.
FACT: Cell phones often create unnecessary drama anddistractions from our important learning.

Cellphones are only allowed to be used before the first bell (7:15 am) andafter the last bell (2:30 pm). They can only be used during the day with
permission from your current teacher.
1st Offense >>> phone will be taken by the teacher and returned to thestudent at the end of the day.
2nd Offense >>> phone will be taken and given to the principal, and returned to the student after a conference.
3rd Offense >>> the phone will be given to the principal, and a parent orguardian will have to pick it up at school.
Further infractions may result in permanent loss of phone privileges.
Students should not bring anypersonal items to school withoutpermission from a teacher or aspart of an educational activity. Students are always responsiblefor their belongings, even when
lost or broken.
If students are distracted by itemsbrought from home, items will
be confiscated, and a parent orguardian will have to pick them
up at school.
Students are not permitted to tradeor sell any personal items at
school.
Students are prohibited from havingany kind of medication at school
(prescription or over the counter).
All student medications must be handledby the school nurse according to
county policies.
West Preston School is proud to be Drug Free!
A student must NEVER possess, sell, give, or use any banned substanceson school property, during school activities, or on the school bus.
This includes alcohol, drugs, tobacco, e-cigarettes, vapes or legal substancesdisguised as illegal substances.
Failure to follow this policy will result in immediate suspension, potentialexpulsion, and notification to the police as necessary.
You can't choose what happens to you. You can only choose how you respond.
Step up. Make choices that you can be proud of andtake responsibility when you make a mistake.
When students make a poor choice that negatively affectstheir learning, or the safety and well-being of others, theycould face a variety of consequences for their actions as
determined by the school administration.
Consequences could include: conference with student'sguardian, lunch detention, after school detention, loss
of privileges, removal from class, restitution ofdamages, confiscation of inappropriate items, in-school
suspension, or out-of-school suspension.
Students will document any negative behaviors in their plannersalong with the consequence received and their reflection. Studentsmust then get a parent/guardian in order to prevent further
consequences..
Habitual violation of rules and policies is especially damaging tothe success of our school. Students with continued behaviorissues will face additional consequences in order to deter
repeated offenses of minor infractions. This cycle will restartat the beginning of each 9 weeks.
5 lunch detentions = After School Detention
5 more lunch detentions = 2nd After School Detention 5 more lunch detentions = In-School Suspension
PassionFirst
Each 9 weeks, students in grades 6-8 get to choose a club!
This is a great chance to try something new or spend time with your friends doing something you already love! If there’s a club you’d love to try, reach out to a teacher and help make it happen!
Clubs will be held on Fridays during PAC time.
Express yourself in a way that doesn’t hinder the learning of others through distraction or offensive content. Dress code issues will be addressed by the principal.
Due to safety issues, students may not wear hoods or hats in school unless permissionis given for special circumstances (hat day or a coupon).

After school activities are one of the best parts ofschool! To keep everyone safe, all school rules and
policies still apply to evening events.
Dances are a privilege,and any student who receives ISS or OSS or
misbehaves at an evening activity will not be allowed toattend any dances or extra evening activities for the
remainder of the 9 weeks.
Guests are not allowed at any dance except for thesemi-formal in the spring. For the semi-formalonly, all guests must be a public-school student ingrades 6-8, pre-approved by both school principals.
Students participating in leadership activities such astutoring, teacher’s aide, student council, or athletics will berequired to sign the Student Leadership Contract. Asstudent leaders, you are bound by a stricter moral andbehavioral code. As such, you will be responsible for
acting in a manner above and beyond your peers. Weexpect you to represent WPS with pride and poise!
We know you love to eat, but food has its limits at school. Students may not eat in class or in the hallway unless given permission by
their teacher or during designated snack times.
If a student wants to eat breakfast, they must report to the cafeteria as soonas they enter the building.
Food may not be taken from the cafeteria unless stored in a lunchbox.
Students may not have any beverages outside of lunch except for bottledwater. Coffee, energy drinks, soda, etc. are not permitted.
All students will have access to filtered drinking water throughout the day.
Gum chewing is also not allowed.
WPS students will have theopportunity for amazing adventures
each school year!
All students will get to attend schoolfield trips for their grade level.
However, if a
student demonstrates a patternof significant behavior issues atschool, a parent or guardian may
be asked to accompany thestudent on any off-campus trips.

We want to celebrate the great things you are doing!Students will have the opportunity to earn various
rewards throughout the school year.
Students will earn stamps on their Prrr cards fordisplaying appropriate behaviors and will be able to
exchange them for reward coupons.
There will also be monthly rewards and two largeincentives at the end of each semester.
This school year, students in grades 5-8 will strive to make honor roll each 9 weeks.
Student GPAs will be calculated and included on student report cards.
A= 4 pts B= 3 pts C= 2 pts D= 1 pt
Principal's Honor Roll = 3.75 GPA or Higher
Honor Roll = 3.5- 3.74 GPA
*MS Honors Classes will be weighted for GPA calculation*
Learning Evolution Academy Days
L.E.A.D. is a new and exciting opportunity for students in 7th and 8th grade. West Preston is partnering with CentralPreston Middle School to provide an exploration of various career paths.
There will be four areas of focus for the program: STEM, Fine Arts, Agriculture, and Human Services. Human serviceswill focus on the medical, culinary, and child care fields.
The events will take place twice during the school year. Be sure to apply and join us for this incredible opportunity!
All students in grades 6-8 will participate in our House System (ala Harry Potter). The houses are designed to encourage teamwork, pride, and ownership in our school community.
All 6th graders will be sorted into houses and will remain in their houses throughout middle school.
PAC classes will be sorted by house, and House Points will be posted weekly and will be awarded forgroup and individual efforts.
Our house themes are based on animals common to West Virginia:
Copperheads, Bears, Bobcats, Hawks
Examples of Individual Points: Perfect Attendance, Honor Roll, Academic Achievements (Math Field Day, Science Fair, etc.), and
Preparedness and Participation in Class
Examples of Team Points: Best Attendance, Best Behavior, Competitions, Assembly Participation
Bullying is when someone is being hurt either by wordsor actions on purpose, usually more than once with an
imbalance of power.
Bullying, whether at school or through social media, will notbe tolerated and will result in immediate disciplinary action.
If you are being bullied or someone you know is beingbullied, please step up and tell a staff member or
complete the online form right away.
WEARE
CONNECTEDRiding a school bus is a privilege and students are todisplay appropriate, respectful behavior at all times.
Students are expected to follow all WPS rules, policies, andbehavioral expectations on school buses.
Failure to follow bus rules and expectations may result inparent contact, lunch detention, after school detention, ISS,
OSS, or temporary or permanent bus suspension.
Students may be written up for minor infractions such astalking too loudly, sitting in the wrong seat, eating or
drinking, and throwing trash on the floor.
Multiple incidents of disorderly conduct along with moreserious incidents will result in a bus write up along withfurther disciplinary action. All disciplinary action will be
determined by the WPS administrators.
Do your part to take care of our buses, drivers, and eachother!
All students in grades 6-8 will have PAC time eachday with other members of their house.
During this time, students will get to meet withteachers, work with each other on projects and
homework, participate in weekly clubs, and work onstrengthening basic skills. Silent Sustained Reading(SSR), iReady skills practice, Mindset Mondays, and
Flex Fridays will also be part of PAC time.
Students struggling with their school work orlacking prerequisite skills will participate in the PACFoundations program during this time for small
group intervention and extra support.
Students' grades will be based on participation andcompletion of their data pages and planners.
Do you enjoy working with peers? Do you take pride in your school workand your organizational skills? Do you want to do your part to give back to
your school community?
Our student tutor program could be a good fit for you! The tutoringprogram takes the place of a traditional elective in a student’s schedule.
Selected 7th and 8th graders will work with younger students on basic skillsfor one period each day. Students will work with classroom teachers to
identify focus areas and effective strategies.
Our teachers work tirelesslyevery day to create powerful
experiences and opportunities forstudents.
This is your chance to
lend a hand!
Beginning this schoolyear, 7th and 8th grade students
can apply to serve as ateacher’s aide.
Eligible students will be assignedto a teacher in need and willhelp them one period a day in
place of a traditionalelective. This is a great
opportunity for students to servein a leadership capacity.
