ACTING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
WERRIBEE PS FEATURED IN THE 7NEWS WEATHER REPORT / WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
What a thrill it was to receive a phone call from a departmental representative on Monday, seeking permission for the
Channel 7 News weather report, featuring Giaan Rooney, to be filmed at Werribee PS in honour of World Environment Day.
“Wow, why Werribee PS?” I asked. The reply being that they had heard about the great work that Werribee PS has done in
the area of sustainability due to us recently being awarded with a three star certificate for our work in the areas of water,
bio-diversity and waste. It is also a fitting reward for the fabulous learning that took place across the school during
Education Week, focussing on the global environmental issue of the palm oil industry’s effect on the orangutan. So, make
sure you tune in to 7 News on Thursday 6th
June to catch a glimpse of Werribee Primary’s ‘20 seconds of fame’ during the
weather report. WELL DONE WERRIBEE.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR CROSS-COUNTRY GIRLS - GOOD LUCK CAITLIN
Caitlin Hendricksen from 5/6F will be our sole representative in the next round of the state cross country competition for
her age group, being held today, Thursday 6th
June. She was to be joined by Rachel Evans who also qualified but is
unavailable to take part. It is an amazing effort for these two girls to qualify in these events but particularly impressive for
Caitlyn to be competing in a running event, when this is not her main or usual sport. Caitlin’s usual sports are netball,
basketball and swimming. We wish Caitlin the best of luck in her event and want her to know that we are very proud of her
achievements; no matter what her results on Thursday.
……..AND WELL DONE TO OUR GIRLS FOOTBALL TEAM
It was great news to hear that our girl’s football team were undefeated at Monday’s Wyndham carnival; only conceding 2
points during the whole day. This means they have qualified to go to the next round. Well done girls and to their coach Mr
Tim Moodie (Eliza and Tom’s dad). Thanks to their mum, Cherie also who helped out at training and to Mrs Staehr and Ms
Lancaster for the organisation and supervision. All that training, organisation and hard work has certainly paid off. We look
forward to hearing about their future results.
MEGA WORKSHOPS
http://werribeeps.global2.vic.edu.au/
Please visit our blog above to find out more about our wonderful Mega Writer’s Workshops (amongst MANY other fabulous
things happening at Werribee PS). This and the numeracy workshops are unique features of our teaching and learning
program that started at Werribee PS over a year ago due to the sheer determination of the teaching team who were
seeking to implement common approaches to the writer’s notebook across the year 5/6 year level. We have the perfect
learning environment for this to take place; the learning gallery, where all children from the 5/6 classes (150 students)
gather to experience consistent messages about the writing process from all 6 teachers. They then have the opportunity to
choose a ‘just right’ learning space to practice the craft of writing and a chance to sit in the authors chair at the end of the
session to share some writing pieces, which helps to motivate and inspire the audience. During the week, the children put
their newly discovered skills into practice in their classrooms and polish up their pieces for sharing at the next big gathering.
Our year 3/4 team have also caught the writing fever and have begun their Mega Writer’s Workshops on Friday afternoons
when the year 5/6 group are off doing sport. I was most impressed to see this in action last Friday. The levels of focus and
motivation were unbelievable for a Friday afternoon, which is traditionally the time that schools (and workplaces) wind
down towards the weekend. Not our year 3/4 team; they were only just beginning to warm up when I saw them in action
after lunch time on Friday afternoon. Well done to all children and staff involved in these rather unique learning
experiences.
HOMEWORK REMINDER
Thank you to the families who have completed their homework task exploring the ideas of: What do you like about
Werribee PS and what are your suggestions to make it even better. We value your contributions to this task and look
forward to sharing the results with each class, the school staff, the school council and the wider school community. Please
note, when we refer to ‘specialist’ classes we are referring to classes such as Physical Education, Art, Library and Science;
the subjects that are taken by specialist teachers. Please ensure this homework task is returned to school by the end of
week 10: Friday 21st
June.

COMMUNITY NOTICES
Young people in Lalor urged to apply to help them be creative young stars
I urge students and young people in Lalor to apply to share in $23,500 to help them develop their talents and chase their dreams by taking part in creative, cultural, academic and community activities.
Applications are available under the Australian Government’s $8 million Creative Young Stars program which is a feature of Creative
Australia, the Australian Government national cultural policy. The program will invest $23,500 per financial year in Lalor and the first
funding round opened on 1 June and closes on 21 June 2013. The program will deliver grants of $500 for individuals and $3000 for groups
of six or more in Lalor. The program will provide funding for successful applicants aged 25 and under.
Lalor is full of young people who have many great talents and who will use those to make a fantastic contribution to our community if
given the chance to develop those talents further.
In some cases their families find it difficult to meet the extra costs associated with participating in activities, events and training.
The Australian Government is determined to help young Australians reach their potential in all walks of life, be that at school, be that at
finding a job, or be that in areas such as the arts, community service and leadership, or academia.
That’s why we are complementing our record investments and improvements in areas such as school education with a $23,500
investment each financial year to help young people in Lalor develop their potential in areas that go beyond the classroom.
These grants will help young people further develop their creative talents by helping them take part in competitions, eisteddfods, public
speaking tournaments and other cultural, artistic or academic events.
I am proud that the Australian Government is able to make this practical investment to ensure that more young people in Lalor get the
chance to reach their potential and make an even greater contribution to our community in the creative fields.
I strongly encourage students and young people, their parents and carers in Lalor to apply for a Creative Young Stars grant to help them
chase their dreams.
In Round 1, the program will deliver grants to 12 individuals and two groups in each of the 150 Federal Electorates across Australia.
For more information on the Creative Young Stars program visit www.youth.gov.au/sites/youth/news/pages/creative-young-stars
Victoria Walks is pleased to announce the release of its new initiative Smart Steps: for Families, an exciting collection of
activities, tools and tips to help Victorian families walk more often.
Walking is great for the whole family, and the more walking families can do the better. Walking can improve health, save
money, and make neighbourhoods safer and more enjoyable places to live. Children who walk regularly concentrate better at
school and feel more independent.
Many Victorian families however feel they are too busy to walk, or that their street or neighbourhood is unsuitable for walking.
Parents and carers can simply find it hard to get children out of the house.
Victoria Walks invites parents and carers to check out Smart Steps: for Families, and enjoy walking more often. It includes:
• Activity sheets - families can add a bit of extra fun into their next walk to school or neighbourhood stroll.
• Child-friendly streets - parents and carers can understand how suitable their street and neighbourhood are for
children to walk and play, and find out how they can improve them.
• Walk to school - parents and carers can find out how to start a local Walk Together Group, for walking children to
school and to other destinations.
Smart Steps: for Families is available to access for free on the Victoria Walks website at
www.victoriawalks.org.au/smartsteps/families
