Talbert Commemorates 75thAnniversary With Package

Talbert is commemorating its milestone75th year in business in 2013. To celebrate, the company is offering an optional, distinc-tive anniversary package on select 2013models. Greg Smith, VP of sales and mar-keting at Talbert, said the anniversary optionmarks an important event for the company.

“Not many trailer companies have been inbusiness for 75 years, and fewer yet can saythey have had customers with them for themajority of those years,” he said. “This 75thanniversary commemorative trailer has sig-nificant meaning for our company and theentire Talbert team. We want to share thiscelebration with our dealers and customerswho have spent so many years as our part-ners, as well as those new to Talbert.”

The trailer isoffered in standard Talbert Red or TalbertBlack and will feature a clear coating toboost the color and provide a distinct shine. Finally, the apitong decking on each 75thanniversary trailer is treated with linseed oilto liven the appearance of the wood andserve as a preservative.

Rogers Introduces Specialized ‘Super Loads’ Trailer ModelSpecialized carriers can now

haul their “super loads” onRogers specialized applicationmodel. This trailer was specifi-cally designed and built for amajor southwestern utility com-pany to transport emergencytransformers. It also will haulrough terrain cranes, excavatorsor other heavy equipment withlittle or no breakdown.

Stretching out more than 90ft. (27 m), this 60-ton (54 t)capacity trailer features threeair-ride axles with 54-1/2 in.(138 cm) axle spacings com-bined with a 14 ft. 1 in. (4.2 m)booster assembly and twodetachable axles. The boostercan easily be removed and therear assembly can be run as a 3-axle, close-coupled 4-axle, or a5-axle when hauling lighterloads or when a spread axle con-figuration is not required. The trailer alsofeatures Rogers’ detachable rear frame forquick and easy axle load re-distributions.The 26 ft. (7.9 m) platform deck easily fitsunder most super loads, according to themanufacturer.

This model incorporates Rogers’ No Footself-lifting gooseneck, which operates onlow hydraulic pressures utilizing standardtruck-tractor PTO or a self-contained gasengine power unit that can easily and safelyraise or lower the deck under full load.

Rogers’ tapered, self-aligning beam hookconnection offers a quick and safe goose-neck-to-deck connection. The ground-hug-ging Croucher design has tapered main-beams for maximum loading stability. Anadditional feature of this model is a “Dolly

Link”, increasing the swing clearance to 182in. (462 cm), to distribute the trailer’s king-pin load onto the tandem-axle, air-ride sus-pension helper dolly and the tractor.

Efficiency Production Aids HPWED in Flooding IssuesEveryone knows Texas is big. It’s famous

for its size. When people think about theLone Star State many think of wide stretch-es of arid land where cowboys rustled theircattle past cactus and tumbleweed. In partsof Texas, this description still holds true(except maybe the tumbleweed). What may be less glamourized, however,

are the wet and rainy areas of Texas whererunning water lies just below the ground andcan cause major damage to undergroundutilities and infrastructure. The city of Houston’s Public Works and

Engineering Department (HPWED) recent-ly faced the wrath of the water gods whenthey experienced excess inflows at the citytreatment plant. Video inspections of sever-al trunk lines in the area revealed a largecrack in the junction box at the base of amanhole in a busy commercial area of westHouston. The heavy groundwater was making its

way into the 42 in. (106.7 cm) diameter san-itary sewer line and filling up capacity at thetreatment plant. The running water problem, exacerbated by the above average rainfall, was so bad that large sinkholes were devel-oping at the site of the break. Houston’s PWED needed to fix the prob-

lem fast. But because of the location of thebreak, in a busy commercial area acrossfrom a shopping plaza, restaurants, and gasstations, the HPWED needed to fix the prob-lem while keeping everyone — repair crews, motorists, and pedestrians — safe through-out the duration of the excavation project.

Challenges Ahead for Houston Contractor

Taking on this immensely challengingproject was T Construction Company (T-

Con), based in Houston. The first challengethey addressed was selecting an appropriateshoring system for an excavation that wouldneed to be very deep (31 ft. [9.4 m]), but cutin a very tight spot between the median ofthe north and south bound lanes of S. DairyAshford Road, just south of the intersectionwith Bissonnet Street. For assistance with developing an appro-

priate shoring plan, T-Con turned to theshoring specialists at Professional Shoringand Supply’s Houston branch. “There was so little room in that median,

with access for an excavator and otherequipment from just two sides,” said SteveHanley, Professional Shoring and Supply’sHouston branch manager. “Because of theextremely deep grade, not to mention thewater problem, traditional trench boxes wereimmediately ruled out as an option,” Hanley

said. “And there really wasn’t room to bringin equipment to vibrate or drive tight-sheet-ing either.”

Solutions Found With Innovative Shoring System

T-Con needed a non-traditional shoringsolution, one that could reach the deepgrade; could be installed with very littleaccess; and be strong enough to withstandthe pressures of the heavily saturated wetsoil. Fortunately, Hanley had the perfectsolution for T-Con; a slide rail shoring sys-tem from Efficiency Production.Efficiency’s Universal slide rail is a com-

ponent shoring system comprised of steelpanels (similar to trench shield sidewalls)

and vertical steel posts. The highly versatilesystem can be used in a variety of configura-tions. Efficiency’s slide rail system can beconfigured into small four-sided pits; anobstruction-free ClearSpa configuration; orin a Multi-Bay configuration to install largetanks and structures, or lengths of pipe morethan 40 ft. (12.3 m).“We mobilized a two-bay, four-sided

Multi-Bay configured slide rail system toshore an excavation with dimensions of 35feet (10.7 m) long, 16 feet (4.9 m) wide, and31 feet (9.4 m) deep,” explained Hanley. The bottom of the cracked junction box was28 ft. (8.5 m) deep below the surface, and T-Con needed to cut 3 ft. (.9 m) further downfor a pour-in-place concrete foundation.Slide rail is installed by sliding the panels

into integrated rails on the posts, and thenpushing the panels and posts incrementallydown to grade as the pit is dug; a processcommonly referred to as a “dig and push”shoring system. Using a 200 ton (181.4 t) crane truck and

a Komatsu PC400LC excavator, T-Conbegan their excavation by installing the firstslide rail bay over the existing manhole. However, just 12 ft. (3.7 m) into their dig,the contractor encountered flowing sand andwater that began pouring into the excava-tion.

Water Problem Overcome WithIngenuity From Contractor and

Equipment SupplierWell points had already been installed and

“There was so little room in that medi-an, with access for an excavator andother equipment from just two sides,”said Steve Hanley, Professional Shoringand Supply’s Houston branch manager.-

Efficiency’s innovative slide rail systemcame with integrated barrier posts andguard rails that are specificallydesigned to attach to the top of the sliderail panels.

After employing additional well points, T-Con forms and pours the new manholeshield foundation. They had just enough time to get it to cure before the groundwater again began flowing into the excavation. see SHORING page 60

First Drivers See Congestion Relief in Central TexasCommuters and business people began

easing through central Texas as the TexasDepartment of Transportation and the StateHighway 130 Concession Company LLCopened SH 130 Nov. 11 between Austin andSan Antonio. The new roadway, whichspans 41 mi. (66 km) from Mustang Ridgeto I-10 in Seguin, officially opened afteryears of planning and partnering to addresscongestion on I-35 in and around Austin.Under terms of the contract SH 130

Concession Company invested nearly $1.4billion and will operate and maintain theroadway for 50 years at no cost to the state.“SH 130 is an outstanding highway and a

great example of how transportation solu-tions can be realized when government andthe private sector work together on behalf ofall Texans,” said Ted Houghton, chairman ofthe Texas Transportation Commission.“Commuters and business people travelingthrough central Texas no longer have to dealwith congestion, and best of all, taxpayersdid not get the bill.”The new roadway, which is an extension

of SH 130 segments 1 through 4 fromGeorgetown to just south of Austin’s airport, represents the effective use of comprehen-sive development agreements where the pri-vate sector teams with TxDOT to build,

operate and maintain highways. SH 130 pro-vides an alternate choice for business usersand commuters to travel efficiently throughcentral Texas.“Thanks to SH-130, traffic flowing

along one of America’s most impor-tant trading routes has a new option, which will help ease travel time formotorists in the area” Gov. Rick Perrysaid. “Infrastructure is a major reason

businesses continue to look to Texasfor expansion or relocation. We haveto use our fiscal discipline and everytool at our disposal, including public-private partnerships like this and end-ing diversions from Fund 6, to createthe infrastructure necessary to handlea population that’s growing by 1,000people a day.”“As we continue to find ways to

address congestion for businesses andcommuters in Texas, the opening ofSH 130 could not come at a bettertime,” said Phil Wilson, TxDOTexecutive director. “Working with our part-ners to deliver this state-of-the-art facility isa huge win for anyone driving and anyonemoving goods through central Texas. We’regrateful to Governor Perry and the legisla-

ture for providing us the tools to make thisand other major projects become a reality forTexas drivers.”

Motorists were able to drive segments 5and 6 of SH 130 for free until Nov. 11. OnNov. 11, the toll rate was set at $0.15 permile for passenger vehicles using TxTag.With this new road, motorists can travel 90

mi. of toll road and bypass I-35 congestionbetween Seguin and Georgetown for about$12.

Opening the roadway also pro-vides an opportunity to promotesafety. Drivers are reminded to payattention, buckle seatbelts, put awaytheir cell phones, use the left lane forpassing only, never drink and driveand obey all traffic laws.“Driving safely begins with safe

drivers and it’s our responsibility toremind people how to remain safeon Texas roads,” said Bill Meadows,Texas transportation commissioner.“The steps are basic ones, but wemust still be vigilant in remindingdrivers of how serious it is everytime they get behind the wheel of avehicle.”TxDOT recently began posting

the number of fatalities in Texasyear-to-date as a sobering reminderfor drivers to pay attention whenthey’re driving on Texas roadways.

The department also recently began display-ing signs all over the state urging motoriststo use the left lane for passing only on majorhighways. For more information, call 512/463-8700.

Volvo SD75 Provides HighOutput, Low Emissions When it comes to demanding compact-

ing jobs, the new SD75 soil compactorfrom Volvo Construction Equipment isloaded with features that enable it to takeon a wide range of applications. The high-ly maneuverable, mid-sized compactor issuited for small to medium sized jobs andeven performs well inside structures. Newfeatures improve the SD75 compactingcapability — boosting efficiency and pro-ductivity while lowering cost of opera-tion, according to the manufacturer. Built for optimum compacting per-

formance, the SD75 provides greatermaterial density in fewer passes. Highcentrifugal forces, high frequency anddrum weight all combine to produce theenergy necessary for enhanced com-paction and high machine productivity. Dynamic drum forces can be adapted

to suit a wide range of terrain or depth ofmaterial. High or low amplitudes areselectable from the operator control panel.Additionally, two drum frequencies canbe chosen with a console switch to com-pensate for changing soil types and condi-tions and an optional 5-frequency featurefurther boosts the machine’s versatilityand performance. A center joint provides +/-38 degrees of

articulation and +/-17 degrees of drumoscillation for stable, flexible machineperformance and greater operator comfortover rough terrain. Because the 66-in.(167 cm) wide drum remains in constantcontact with the ground surface, com-paction is both smooth and uniform. Able to negotiate slopes of up to 33

percent, the SD75 drum frame designoffers better, more effective gradeability. The possibility of digging into the surfaceor damaging the machine is eliminated, asan angled frame allows better clearance inthe approach to steep slopes and whileloading, according to the manufacturer. The SD75 is a steady and stable work

platform with a heavily constructed axlethat is integrated in the drive train for anefficient rear-wheel drive system.

Traction is increased with the No-Spindifferential axle, which prevents tire slip-page and improves gradeability, perform-ance and productivity. The optional Ultra-Grade traction system also improvesgradeability when operating on slipperysurfaces and steep inclines.

More Productive, With MoreCare for the Environment

One highlight of the new SD75 is itspowerful 4-cylinder Volvo engine (99.2hp [73.9 kW]) which combines Tier IViand EPA certification with the perform-ance, dependability and fuel efficiency forwhich Volvo is known. A diesel particu-late filter (DPF) burns off and eliminatesmaterial build-up — further reducingemissions. A hydraulically operatedengine cooling fan runs only when need-ed, reducing fuel consumption and noiselevels. Volvo long life coolants protect themachine for up to 6,000 hours, resultingin lowered operating costs and moreuptime. For added peace of mind, theengine is backed by Volvo dealer serviceand parts support, as well as a 1,000-hourwarranty.

Safety First — and Last In line with the Volvo commitment to

safety, the emergency stop system can beeasily activated by the operator, shuttingdown the engine, applying the brakes andstopping the machine’s movement.Further promoting safe operating condi-tions, a switch located in the seat will shutthe machine down and apply the brakes ifthe operator rises from the seat for morethan five seconds during operation. Carefor the environment also is ingrained inthe design of the new SD75. Even simplethings are important — for example a newhydraulic oil fill and Volvo standard sightglass are now included as standard, mini-mizing the possibility of oil spills andoverfilling. For more information, call 717/532-

9181 or visit www.volvo.com.

A center joint provides +/-38 degrees of articulation and +/-17 degrees of drum oscilla-tion for stable, flexible machine performance and greater operator comfort over roughterrain.

BW100ADM-5 Roller Offers Enhanced Operator Experience

Featuring a specially-developed operator’s platform,Bomag’s BW100ADM-5 tandem vibratory roller providesoptimal all-around visibility and intuitive controls for highlyefficient operation, according to the manufacturer.A new smart drive steering wheel has a smaller diameter

to provide more room for the operator and a clear view of allcontrols. The driver’s platform also features a multifunction-al travel lever and adjustable seat that provides added com-fort and an enhanced view of the drums. Additionally, mod-ern circular instrumentation on the dashboard is completewith warning signals, hour meter and fuel level indicator. The BW100ADM-5 is powered by a 20.2-hp (15 kW),

water-cooled Kubota diesel engine that includes ECO-MODE, a system that automatically idles the engine to con-serve fuel during inactivity. The roller delivers 3,822 lbs. of

centrifugal force at a frequency of 3,780 vpm, while offeringa working width of 39.4 in. (100 cm). The BW100ADM-5also is equipped with Bomag’s intelligent vibration control toensure consistent compaction results. In contrast to most rollers on the market that have travel

motors hanging out from the drums, the BW100ADM-5 isbuilt with its travel motors contained within the drums. Thiscompact design enhances maneuverability, particularlywhen operating in tight spaces or near obstructions.A 26.4-gal. (100 L) water tank and pressurized spray sys-

tem feature triple-filtered nozzles that deliver sufficient watercoverage to the drums. Additional windscreen protectionkeeps water dispersal consistent even in windy conditions. The roller’s durable composite hood provides easy access

to the engine, while the steering column allows quick entryto view central electronics. Project to Reduce Traffic Congestion, Increase Safetywalls on the San Diego Freeway. (I-405).Additionally, lane widening is taking place fromthe Santa Monica Freeway. (I-10) to the VenturaFreeway. (U.S.-101).The project will help reduce existing and

forecasted traffic congestion on the I-405 andenhance traffic operations by adding freewaycapacity in an area that experiences heavy con-gestion. In addition to these modifications, theproject will improve both existing and futuremobility and enhance safety throughout the cor-ridor. Project benefits include a decrease in com-muter time, reduction in air pollution, and pro-motion of ridesharing.Three bridges are being completely recon-

structed in a two-phase process to reduce theimpact on traffic flow. The first bridge thatbegan the reconstruction process was the SunsetBridge in 2010, which also included the widen-ing of under-crossings at Montana Avenue,Getty Center Drive, Church Lane andSepulveda Boulevard. The Sunset Bridge was reopened on Sept. 24,

2012. The newly expanded, seismicallyenhanced bridge is approximately 30 ft. (9.1 m)wider than its predecessor. It boasts additionallanes to improve area traffic flows, and itscolumns have been repositioned to accommo-date the additional freeway lane created by theproject. The new bridge is approximately 5 ft.(1.5 m) higher than the previous one and con-tains a new water line, underground power linesand other improved utility infrastructures.Skirball Center Drive Bridge was next. Like

the Sunset Bridge, Skirball was also widened by30 ft. (9.1 m) and designed to the latest seismicstandards. The new bridge will include a mini-mum 10-ft. (3.1 m) wide travel path on the southside of the bridge to accommodate wildlifemovement. This path would function as awildlife conduit (nighttime hours) as well as apedestrian sidewalk. While the north side of thebridge was completed this summer, the southside expected to be open by summer 2013.The biggest and most talked about bridge on

the docket is the Mulholland Bridge over theSepulveda Valley. The south side was demol-ished in July 2011, with city and county agen-cies preparing for Carmageddon. Major congestion was avoided, however, and

in a press release this past July, L.A. CountySupervisor Zev Yaroslavsky asked the public forthe same cooperation for the demolition of thenorth side of Mulholland in September of thisyear.“During Carmageddon I, drivers proved the

skeptics wrong. They heard our warnings andstayed off the roads, creating a traffic breathernot seen since the free-flowing freeways of the1984 Olympics. I have every confidence thatthey’ll rise to the occasion again,” saidYaroslavsky. And they did.On Sept. 29th, the Mulholland Bridge was

completely shut down for 53 consecutive hours

for the demolition of the north side. Half a mil-lion motorists drive this portion of the I-405 overa typical day.Kiewit Infrastructure West Co., with offices

throughout California and the United States, isthe prime contractor on the I-405 project. A num-ber of subcontractors are working on the job, notably Pennhall Company, headquartered inAnaheim, Calif., which is performing the demo-lition on all three bridges.Crews are working seven days a week, day and

night. “The main freeway work is being done almost

exclusively at night, between midnight and 5a.m., in order to impact the traffic as little as pos-sible. It would be literally impossible to build abridge in this area during the day. Impacts to traf-fic would be untenable,” said Dave Sotero,Caltrans media relations. The contractors have found beneficial uses for

excavated material on the project by recycling itto create the aggregate for the I-405 roadbed, andconcrete paving on the Orange Light Extension— a bus way in the San Fernando Valley. When this 10 mi. stretch is complete, the I-405

will have the longest HOV lane in the country. The Sepulveda Pass segment was last on the listbecause of the challenges it presented. “With traveling through a canyon, there is no

easy way to add a highway lane without carvingout some of the canyon to make room,” saidSotero.Accompanying the three bridge replacements

is the reconstruction of the Wilshire ramps andloops. Caltrans states that nowhere is improve-ment needed more than at the WilshireBoulevard/ I-405 interchange. Accompanying the three bridge replacements

is the reconstruction of the Wilshire ramp inter-change. Metro states that improvements areespecially at the Wilshire Boulevard/ I-405 inter-change. Drivers merging on and off the I-405jockey with drivers traveling east and west on aheavily congested Wilshire Boulevard. This creates a potential safety hazard for com-

muters and causes many hours of delay eachyear. All eight ramps will be rebuilt to separatethe traffic, eliminating cross-traffic patterns andallowing for safer and smoother transitions. The entire project was originally slated for

completion in the spring of 2013, but utility chal-lenges and ROW acquisition has pushed the enddate back about four to six months, closer to theend of 2013.Federal stimulus funds kicked in $190 million

of the total $1.48 billion bill, the remainder ofwhich has come from state and other sources.Approximately 18,000 jobs were created duringconstruction. For more information, visit

The HL740-9 loadinggreen waste.

Gabriel Mejia, operations manager, with his HyundaiHL740-9 wheel loader.

The HL740-9 loadingtrucks with mulch to behauled to wood burningfacilities.

OC Mulch & Greenwaste Recycling, a relatively newbusiness in Orange County, Calif., has already made a strongimpact on the environment, with the help of a HyundaiHL740-9 wheel loader. OC Mulch & Greenwaste Recycling initially began in

2010 as an experiment, to provide the local community withan alternative to burning coal after the state of Californiapassed the Global Warming Solutions Act in September2006. This law set strict limitations on coal burning with the goal

to drastically reduce coal-fueled electricity by 2020. Sincethe burning of coal produces carbon dioxide emissions, which have been linked to global warming, California’s StateLegislature has put measures in place to begin transitioningto alternative energy sources. This family-owned business began as a three person oper-

ation, but as the biomass fuel industry has grown, the com-pany has tripled in size in less than three years. Gabriel Mejia, operations manager of OC Mulch &

Greenwaste Recycling, has run the operation since soon afterits opening. “Our facility allows tree trimmers, gardeners and land-

scapers to discard their green waste from various job sites atan affordable price and as an environmentally-friendlyoption as opposed to bringing the waste to a landfill,” saidMejia.Once the waste is received, it is recycled in one of two

ways. The first recycling method involves the composting ofthe green waste which, once decomposed, is screened andturned into fine soil. The company is able to sell the soil to local farmers, who,

in turn, reuse it on their farms as fertilizer for their crops. The second method requires the green waste to run

through a grinder to produce wood chips. Wood chips havebecome an important commodity in California since limita-tions were put on burning coal. Many large facilities are beginning use wood fuel to pro-

duce energy since it is considered a renewable fuel source, inexpensive and complies with state standards. According to Mejia, the facility has 10 to 20 trucks pick-

ing up approximately 25 tons (18.1 t) of wood chips each dayto bring to local wood burning power plants.“This industry is rapidly growing in California,” said

Mejia. “Finding alternative energy sources with low carbonemissions has become necessary. At our facility, we are notonly able to recycle green waste that may have otherwisebeen sitting in a landfill, we are also providing a more eco-friendly and affordable alternative to burning coal.”A major factor in the efficiency of the OC Mulch &

Greenwaste Recycling facility is the equipment used on site.

In the beginning of this year, the company purchased aHyundai HL740-9 wheel loader from Heavy EquipmentSales, LLC in Corona, Calif., after needing some additionalmuscle in moving around big piles of material. The Hyundai model was chosen over competitive brands

due to its conservative fuel consumption, which is especiallynecessary with California fuel restrictions. Since purchasing the HL740-9, the company has been

able to save 7 to 10 gal. (26.5 to 37.9 L) of fuel per day andwith the average price of off-road diesel fuel at $4.00 per gal-lon, this adds up to big savings. The HL740-9 is built with a powerful yet fuel efficient,

Cummins Tier-III QSB 6.7 engine which boasts 143 hp (107kW). There are three engine modes available includingpower, standard and econo for full power or reduced fuelconsumption options according to operator preference. “We get very busy here, with many trucks going in and out

and picking up and dropping off large loads,” said Mejia. “With the HL740-9, loading and unloading the trucks is a

breeze.”The company uses the Hyundai HL740-9 wheel loader in

a variety of applications and it is worked long and hard, at aminimum of 10 hours a day, seven days a week. The loader is used to move heavy green waste into piles to

sort for grinding and composting as well as for loading trucksthat are picking up large amounts of wood chips and soil. According to Mejia, the most appealing features of the

loader include the hi-mate remote management system, which provides the operator with vital service and diagnosticinformation from any computer with internet access. The hi-mate system has the ability to track fuel levels, machine loca-tion and set work boundaries and can also send users alertswhen these limits are reached.“The tracking device makes this machine even more reli-

able,” said Mejia. “I will know in an instant if the engine hasgotten too hot or if the fuel level is low through a text mes-sage. It’s a great help in preventing any unexpected down-time and maintenance.” The HL740-9 wheel loader provides OC Mulch &

Greenwaste Recycling with shear strength and efficiency. The machine has an operating weight of 26,460 lbs. (12,002kg), a bucket capacity of 3 cu. yds. (2.3 cu m) and a bucketbreakout force of 24,800 lbs. (11,249 kg). All of which, makemoving large loads of materials around the facility lookeffortless.“Our HL740-9 was a great investment and it pays for itself

over and over again,” said Mejia. “The amount of work wecan accomplish in such a short amount of time is incredible.” For more information, call 951/674-9999 or visit

Holt CAT Invests in High School’s Tech Skills ProgramHolt CAT and Caterpillar, as part of the

Dealer Excellence Fund, have made aninvestment of $8,800 to Dubiski CareerHigh School in Grand Prairie, Texas, to sup-port its technical skills program and thecareer development of technical students. On Nov. 16, the Dallas WFAA’s

(est. 1989) is a program to strengthen cur-riculum and faculty development in techni-cal schools and increase the pool of qualifiedservice technicians. “The goal of the Dealer Excellence Fund

is currently interviewing Dubiski HighSchool students for paid internship positions. The programs begins in December and eligi-ble student interns will receive top levelindustry training and could qualify for thenational safe tractor operator certification, which will help these young people develop

a competitive edge in the market place. Holt strongly supports the training and

education of technical students and hopes toincrease the pool of qualified technicians tomeet industry needs for these specializedemployees, according to the company. The donated funds may be used for schol-

Prices ‘Mixed’ in Oct. ReportThe producer price index for inputs to

construction — covering materials that gointo every type of project, plus items con-sumed by contractors such as diesel fuel —decreased 0.4 percent in October, followingincreases of 0.9 percent in both Septemberand August. The index climbed 2.0 percentin the 12 months ending in October.Meanwhile, the indexes that reflect whatcontractors would charge for their workwere largely unchanged and mostly rose lessthan materials costs over 12 months — 1.0percent for industrial buildings, 1.4 percentfor new office construction, 1.5 percent forschools, and 2.6 percent for new warehous-es.Simonson said prices for essential con-

struction materials were mixed in October. The price index for diesel fuel rose 2.3 per-cent in October and 12.6 percent over 12months. Prices for copper and brass millshapes climbed 2.8 percent in October and4.7 percent year-over-year. In contrast, theindex for steel mill products dropped 1.9 per-cent for the month and 8.5 percent for theyear. The index for lumber and plywoodshrank 1.8 percent in October but was 6.2percent higher than a year ago. Indexes forgypsum products and insulation materialsboth fell 0.7 percent for the month but roserelative to October 2011 — by 14.1 percent

and 5.5 percent respectively.“Many of these price changes appear to be

short-term,” Simonson commented. “Whileretail diesel prices have dropped 15 cents pergallon in the past three weeks and copperfutures have declined, steel, gypsum andeven concrete suppliers have announcedhefty price hikes for December or January. As a result, contractors who have already bidto install these materials at fixed prices maybe headed for losses, and even bankruptcy.”Association officials said declining public

investments in infrastructure and businesses’reluctance to commit to investments in theface of the “fiscal cliff” are forcing contrac-tors to keep bids low. “With so few projects to bid on, contrac-

tors are offering their services with little orno margin to cover materials costs,” saidStephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chiefexecutive officer, noting that recent CensusBureau data showed a 4.2 percent drop inpublic construction spending and a slacken-ing in the growth of private nonresidentialconstruction between September 2011 andSeptember 2012. “Congress and the administration have to

find a way to avoid the catastrophic increas-es in taxes and cuts in infrastructure spend-ing that threaten many construction firmsand risk putting their employees out ofwork.”

Shoring System Tackles All Challenges Faced in Trenchwere operational, with the objective to bringthe water level down to below where T-Conhad to perform its work of replacing thecracked manhole. Unfortunately, the well points were over-

whelmed by the amount of water in the dirt, and the excavation had to be paused so addi-tional well points could be installed by a sub-contractor. Results were mixed. “The area was not dry,” said Hanley, “but

the Efficiency slide rail system held up per-fectly. It did not bend or strain under theadditional loads of the water pressure, andthe contractor was able to reach grade.”T-Con Project Manager, Yonin Villares,

said, “Our company normally preformssmaller projects for the city and we had noexperience with installing slide rail thisdeep,” he said. “Having the EfficiencyInstaller on site to guide our crew at thebeginning of the project was instrumental ingetting [the slide rail] started down correctlyunder adverse condition. [EfficiencyProduction’s Special Operations ShoringDivision Specialist] Tim Hurst was there forthe first two days and then ProfessionalShoring’s local installer, Mark Taylor, stayedwith us through the rest of the process.”The HPWED inspectors were similarly

impressed with the slide rail system, saidSam Valdez, city inspector. “I have seenother slide rail systems that would havebowed in under these conditions, but theEfficiency system has not yielded at all orstuck in any position.”Once down to depth, a third layer of well

points were installed inside the shoring sys-tem to remove ground water close to thework area. T-Con formed and poured theirfoundation and had enough time to get it tocure before the ground water again beganflowing into the excavation. Construction ofthe new manhole and sealing of the linesproceeded normally from there on, but withone change of plans.

One More Challenge Presented,One More Problem Solved

“The original plan was to expose thecracked junction box as well as 20 feet (6.1m) of the 42 inches (106.7 cm) concrete linefeeding into it,” said Hanley. “Because of theextraordinary ground water issue, the repairwas completed on the manhole only, and theother section of pipe was left as it was. Thisreally wasn’t as big a deal for the contractoras it was for us, because we had designed theslide rail system for the extra area; a two-baysystem which turned out to be only a one-

bay system.”This problem, however, was easily over-

come due to the flexibility of Efficiency’sslide rail system. Instead of pulling out thelinear posts and parallel beams in order forcorner posts to be installed; T-Con insteadpushed slide rail panels — which werealready onsite — down against the linearposts and parallel beams. Some stab sheeting was also needed near

the bottom of the pit, but the result was asafely shored excavation that did not requireremoving any components of the shoringsystem, or needing to bring in differentequipment which could have delayed theproject.“The slide rail was awesome,” said

Villares. “Without the system, we wouldn’thave been able to get down [to grade] asclean and as quick as we did.”

Fall Protection Accounted for WithIntegrated Barrier Posts and

Guard RailWith an excavation this deep, fall protec-

tion also was a primary concern. Thereagain, Efficiency’s innovative slide rail sys-tem came with an integrated solution in theform of barrier posts and guard rails that are

specifically designed to attach to the top ofthe slide rail panels, creating an easy,OSHA-compliant fall protection system. The $360,000 utility repair project was

started and completed in September 2012.T-Construction Company was founded

four years ago by Juan Ramon Torres. AMinority Business Enterprise, T-Con spe-cializes in all underground utilities includingsewer, water, and storm sewer. Their exca-vation capabilities include open cut, pipebursting, directional drilling, and now sliderail. With offices in Houston, Texas, and

Orlando, Tampa, and Jacksonville Fla.,Professional Shoring and Supply is an offi-cial Efficiency Production, Inc., trenchshielding and shoring equipment distributor. Efficiency Production, “America’s

Holt CAT Announces G3306BGas Petroleum Generator SetHolt CAT, the Caterpillar equipment and

engine dealer for south, central, north andnortheast Texas, has recently announced anew rental fleet addition — the G3306Bsmall gas petroleum generator set. This first-in-class small gas generator is

manufactured with an ISO 9001 compliantplatform and powered on the industry stan-dard G3300 platform — capable of surpass-ing the EPA’s new source performance stan-dards and meeting Texas emissions stan-dards state-wide. This power module is ratedfor operation at 135 ekW for use in energyexploration and production. Equipped with the EMCP 4.3 control

panel, the G3306B features a user-friendlyand familiar interface. Combining theEMCP 4.3 with the G3300 platform pro-vides integrated emissions controls for thecore engine. Manual adjustments arerequired only four times a year with a singlebutton, decreasing the engine’s maintenancetime and cost. The engine’s durability allowsfor harsh oilfield conditions and runs on abroad range of fuel heating values at emis-sion compliant levels. From an operational perspective, the sta-

tionary unit offers fuel flexibility with aCaterpillar supplied air/fuel ratio control anda unique three-way catalyst design. A princi-pal advantage of the G3306B fuel flexibilityis the fuel cost and maintenance savings.Compared to the G9 diesel-run generators, the G3306B provides more than $200,000 infuel and maintenance savings per year.Additionally, the G3300 small gas gener-

ator set accepts 70 percent rated of the firstG1 load and 50 percent the second G2 load, meeting the ISO 8528 transient response. Environmental considerations also have

been incorporated into the design of theG3306B. This unit meets or surpasses U.S.EPA NSPS requirements for stationaryengines. With an integrated catalyst, theG3306B achieves NOx emissions levels of0.5g/bhp-hr NOx, making it suitable for useeven in those Texas regions with strict NOxemissions standards. The G3306B small gas generator set is

backed 100 percent by service providedthrough Caterpillar’s authorized dealer net-work and technicians. For more information, visit www.holt-
