Crew Uses Trimble Connected Community to Communicateled by Fluor Company, Dallas, Texas; Ames ConstructionCompany, Minneapolis, Minn.; Ralph L. WadsworthConstruction Company, Draper, Utah; Wadsworth BrothersConstruction Company, Draper, Utah; and includes at least30 other subcontractors.“This design-build project is massive … requires 1,500

workers, and we’re using the latest technology throughout,”said Scott MacKenzie, survey manager of PRC. “We proba-bly have the largest number of Trimble systems in use at onejob site in the world.”“We’re using Trimble survey equipment to collect site

data, Trimble software to create the site plan digital model,Trimble GCS900 Grade Control Systems on all of our bladesand dozers, and Trimble PCS900 Paving Control Systemsfor all the finished paving,” said Jarred Rico, assistant surveymanager of PRC. “The technology is invaluable on a projectlike this. We’re more efficient, productive, and managing asafer worksite.”According to the PRC managers, the tech-

nology is helping them stay ahead of schedule.“Our crews are working 24/7 to meet the tightschedule we have,” MacKenzie said. “There isno good manual way to accomplish every-thing we’re doing on this project. We’re veryhappy with the Trimble systems and can’timagine working without them on this proj-ect.”PRC built the digital model from the job site

and design data collected at the site.“Fortunately the Trimble technology allows

us to build and adjust the digital model as weprogress along the 24-mile route,” saidMacKenzie. “We encounter soil changes, dif-fering community standards from city to city, and a lot of conditions that weren’t on theplans, so we have to survey and send thechanges into the model builders for the mostcurrent plan that we work from.”Over the years much of the existing road

had been resurfaced multiple times. Theywouldn’t use a profile, but would mill an inch

or so off the existing road and then add a lift of fresh asphalt. This road is heavily used so UDOT determined that I-15needed to be reconstructed and widened. When completed, the freeway will have up to six travel

lanes in each direction, plus on-ramps and exit lanes. Theinside and outside shoulders will be generous concrete-paved emergency shoulders. “This will be a big highway,”said Rico.In building the road, PRC first laid an average of 1 ft. (.31

m) of select granular borrow or crushed stone aggregate, which needed to be imported to the site. Then 6 in. (15 cm)of smaller, open graded base was placed on top. Since thesubbase had been graded with a motor grader using aTrimble GCS900 Grade Control System, PRC felt confidentit could accurately place the gravel layers. On top of the gravel subbases, PRC then placed a 3 in. (7.6

cm) layer of a lean mixture of hot mix asphalt (HMA) usinga pair of pavers equipped with Trimble PCS900 Paving

Control Systems to pave 24-ft. (7.3 m) wide strips.“Because we used Trimble PCS900 paving systems on

the asphalt base, we not only ensured that we used the prop-er amount of HMA, but we also saved on concrete yieldsbecause the concrete use is a direct reflection of the thick-ness, quality and consistency of the asphalt,” stated Rico.“Not having to use wire line, just for starters, saves a lot oflabor, accidents, and rewiring. Plus, there’s a higher level ofconfidence using the technology.”Using the Trimble systems also allowed PRC to monitor

and document its progress. The company checks its workevery 10 ft. (3 m) to ensure quality. “Our production is faster and our end-result quality is bet-

ter,” MacKenzie said. “As long as the system and paver arerunning right and we maintain the confirmation checks, wecan complete whole sections and not have to do any grinds.”The project calls for placing anywhere from 10.5 to 12.5

in. (26.7 to 31.8 cm) of concrete. UDOT required PRC tostand behind the wearability of this heavily-traveled road.PRC will be issuing a four-year-warranty.With a massive and complex project such as I-15 CORE,

communication is critical. Errors not only can be costly, but

they can eat up time.“We’re using the Trimble Connected Community, which

is a web-based service that allows us to communicate in realtime with our people and machines on the site,” says Rico.“I can literally sit at a desk somewhere and make changes tothe digital site plan and send it out to everyone on the site. Iteliminates the cost and time of driving out to the job site, andlocating every rod, total station, and machine to plug in achange.”Connected Community is a centralized information man-

agement system designed to wirelessly connect people, sites, and devices in real time. It provides a two-way data syn-chronization backbone.“I-15 CORE is a custom design project so there are

changes and adjustments that need to be made at all times,”MacKenzie stated. “It would be a nightmare to have to func-tion without the Connected Community — when you thinkof trying to manually trying to get changes out to 80-some

GPS machine systems and data collectors on thesite, we wouldn’t be as far along as we are.”MacKenzie said that he’s quite satisfied that

the 24-mi. (38.6 km) I-15 CORE project is mov-ing ahead quickly and will meet its aggressivetimeline. “My number one concern all along is safety,”

said MacKenzie. “The project has been verysafe and being able to use the automation thatTrimble provides helps keep workers off thegrade and out of harm’s way.”“Also,” Rico added, “when you look at the

volume of information collected, processed, andrelied on every day, we wouldn’t be able to pro-duce the level of quality as quickly as we havewithout the help of technology.” When the last of the 2.8 million sq. yds. (2.1

million sq m) of concrete paving is placed as thewear surface there will likely be plenty to cele-brate.

When completed, the freeway will have up to six travel lanes in each direction, plus on-ramps and exit lanes.

The Utah County I-15 Corridor Expansion projectbegan in April 2010 and is deadlined for an end of2012 completion — an unprecedented 35 month sched-ule.

This road is heavily used so UDOT determined that I-15 needed to be reconstructed and widened.

The chief executive officer of the Associated GeneralContractors of America, Stephen E. Sandherr, issued the fol-lowing statement in response to the release of the NationalCoordinating Committee for Multi-employer PlansRetirement Security Review Commission’s proposed planfor preserving, remediating and innovating multiemployerretirement plans:“The Commission’s plan represents a pragmatic, reason-

able and — most importantly for taxpayers — self-sufficientapproach to preserving and protecting nearly half a trilliondollars worth of multiemployer retirement plans. Theseretirement plans, many of which are funded by constructionfirms, are needed to ensure long-term security for tens ofthousands of construction workers. As important, the retire-ment plans’ funds provide a vital source of capital fordomestic investments in everything from small businesses tomajor infrastructure projects. The steps outlined in the com-

mission’s plan give employers and their workers the toolsthey need to protect their retirement plans.“The recommendations included in this plan also

acknowledge two distinct realities. First, taxpayers will notbe asked to contribute to the preservation of these retirementplans, and second, workers and employers alike must bewilling to reconsider the long-term viability of the currentdefined-benefit plan model in place in this country. Indeed, the steps outlined in the commission’s plan have the poten-tial to safeguard many current retirement plans while offer-ing a way to provide retirement security for future construc-tion workers. That is why we will work to support swift leg-islative approval of the types of measures outlined in thisplan and encourage employers and their workers to adoptthem.”

tractors were able to get more work done on transporta-tion projects, providing a market boost early this year.” While the recent uptick in highway construction is posi-

tive news for a sector that saw a four percent dip in activityduring 2012, Black warned that it remains to be seen if thetrend will continue, noting that while states have recentlybeen obligating federal dollars at a good pace, contractawards for highway projects have been down, and nearlyhalf the states are pulling back on their programs. The stalemate over the federal budget situation is another

factor that could impact the market over the next fewmonths, and it is unclear at this time if Congress will fundthe highway and transit investment increases authorized lastsummer, or hold funding for these programs at the 2012 lev-els. “We are looking to see how state and local governments

will deal with the federal budget sequestration, which wentinto effect March 1. While the federal highway, airport andnon-capital transit investments will not be cut, the reduc-tions in other programs adds further uncertainty into analready challenging situation for many state budgets,”explained Black. The term “value put in place” reflects actual work done

on transportation construction projects and is an indicator ofreal-time market activity. For more information, visit www.artba.org.(This story also can be found on Construction Equipment

CalTrans Deems California’s Bridges, Overcrossings Safe

Volvo Rents, a worldwide provider of small-to-medium sized con-struction equipment, has opened a new rental center in Turlock, Calif. This is the latest move in the company’s continued expansion of its

California rental business portfolio, increasing its statewide total to 14rental centers. It also comes on the heels of a forecast by economists at IHS Global

Insight that said California will lead the pack in a nationwide con-struction recovery through 2016. According to IHS stats, California will have the most construction

dollars spent ($723 billion); will have the largest gain in yearly spend-ing dollars ($76.40 billion); and have the third highest annual averagepercentage gain (15.6 percent). “There’s evidence showing a bit of sunshine for the construction

industry that has seen too much rain. Yes, it’s being done in modera-tion and gradually, but the numbers are there,” said Mike Crouch, vicepresident of business development, Volvo Rents. “We couldn’t be more excited about further expanding our

California footprint and providing the necessary equipment and serv-ices that will no doubt accelerate the projected recovery.” In addition to Volvo Rents’ expanding line of Volvo compact equip-

ment — such as backhoe and skid steer loaders, compact wheel load-ers, compact excavators and compaction equipment — the rental cen-ter carries a comprehensive line of essential equipment and tools forthe construction, commercial, industrial and homeowner markets. Thefocus is on daily, weekly and monthly rentals.Located at 1400 South Avenue, the new store is open Monday

through Friday, 6:30 am to 5:00 pm; Saturday, 6:30 am to 3:00 pm;and Sunday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. 24-hour service also is availableevery day of the week.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) The statetransportation department said Feb. 7 it hasdetermined that the foundations underpin-ning thousands of bridges, overcrossings andother structures throughout California aresafe. The department undertook an extensive

review of its testing data after a series of sto-ries in The Sacramento Bee raised questionsabout testing of the concrete foundations onthe new eastern span of the Bay Bridge. In its review, CalTrans said irregularities

were “exceedingly rare’’ and limited inscope. “The subject matter may be complicated,

but the conclusion is simple: California’stransportation infrastructure rests on depend-able foundations,’’ the agency’s director,Malcolm Dougherty, said in a letter to stateSen. Mark DeSaulnier. DeSaulnier, D-Concord, chairs the Senate

transportation committee and convened ahearing on the matter last year. At the time,he asked for an independent review by theLegislative Analyst’s Office, a report heexpects to receive in the next few months. He said it was critical that the foundation-

testing data be thoroughly examined beforethe scheduled opening of the new span, which is the eastern half of a bridge that con-

nects San Francisco to Oakland andBerkeley. The $6.3 billion bridge is expected to

open by the end of the year. “We know that the existing bridge is not

safe,’’ DeSaulnier said. The Bee found that a CalTrans technician

who tested the structural integrity of the newspan’s main tower falsified tests on otherprojects. The newspaper’s reporting alsoraised questions about whether a 19-ft. sec-tion of concrete in that foundation had beenallowed to harden to the required strength. CalTrans said experts who analyzed more

than 23,000 tests found that the results were“demonstrably unreliable’’ in just 11 cases.Engineers then conducted structural tests todetermine whether the concrete was stable. Despite its positive findings, the agency

said it was implementing changes. Theyinclude subjecting test data to a quality con-trol assessment as a way to verify the accu-racy of results and requiring greater over-sight of the testing operations in the field.

Atlas Copco Introduces Rangeof Electric Concrete PokersA three-model family of electronic Atlas

Copco SMART concrete pokers has madeits debut in the U.S. market. The 3rd genera-tion re-design of the model 40, 48 and 56SMART pokers has a streamlined aluminumhousing that protects their built-in electronics with an overallweight reduction of 30 percent, according to the manufacturer. That the Atlas Copco

SMART concrete pokers canbe powered by common 120volt supply gives them what thecompany has described as“plug and poke” operation andsimplicity of control with a sin-gle on/off switch. High centrifugal force, rang-

ing from 360 lbs. in theSMART 40 to more than 1,030lbs. in the SMART 56, com-bines with stable speed andhigh amplitude to ensure good concretevibration with fewer dips. The SMART poker’s variable frequency

converter is built in, which protects againstshock, overload and overheating. Rapid

acceleration to 12,000 vibrations per minutemeans voids are transported to the surfacequickly. Light and maneuverable, the SMART

poker comes with 32.8 ft. of cable and 16.4

ft. of hose provide ample reach at the job site.Special poker hose lengths also are avail-able.For more information, call 800/732-6762

GT-3200...

GOMACO DebutsSidewalk Paver atWorld of Concrete

GOMACO introduced the GT-3200 sidewalk paver withan adjustable aggregate base mold on the front and a side-walk paving mold on the rear at World of Concrete 2013. It’sa three-track paver designed specifically for zero-clearancesidewalk rehabilitation projects, fulfilling a contractor’sunique request.

The GOMACO GT-3200 can be equipped with a front-mounted adjustable aggregate base mold to spread the baseaggregate for the sidewalk. During the first pass, rock isplaced on grade and an auger spreads the material, whilethree pan vibrators mounted to the mold start the compactionprocess. The base mold is equipped with two heavy-dutyhydraulic cylinders that provide 14 in. (35.6 cm) of hydrauliclift for setting the grade depth below the track line and rais-ing the mold for the paving pass.

During the second paving pass, the sidewalk is slipformedwith a unique, minimum-clearance trailing mold. The GT-3200 sidewalk paver has a 20 in. (50.8 cm) wide, 14 ft. (4.3m) long folding conveyor. The conveyor allows ready-mixtrucks to discharge from the street instead of driving overexisting curb to reach the paver. The hydraulic pivoting con-veyor also has been designed to rotate 180 degrees to allowfor easy loading of concrete into the hopper from either sideof the machine and to avoid obstacles associated with zero-clearance paving. The sidewalk mold features hydraulicadjustable sideplates to form the GOMACO edge, while atrailing stainless pan provides the superior finish. The side-walk mold also can be equipped with a bar inserter for plac-ing transverse bars into the slab, if required by project speci-fications.

The GT-3200 sidewalk paver also features all-track steer-ing, which saves time getting on and off stringline, allowsbetter job-site mobility, and ease in loading and unloadingfor transport. It can be transported without removing eitherthe front-mounted adjustable aggregate base mold or therear-mounted sidewalk paving mold. Simply fold the con-veyor and drive the GT-3200 onto the trailer for transport. Itfeatures the latest in GOMACO machine control with theexclusive G+ system with a new full color screen.

G+ is a powerful controller for paving accuracy andelectronic monitoring of steering and grade. G+, com-bined with the GT-3200’s C4.4T Caterpillar engine with91 hp (67.9 kW), provides plenty of power for sidewalkpaving, according to the manufacturer.

WHILE SOME PEOPLE ARE HAVING A PROBLEM GRASPING THE CONCEPT,THEY’RE SURE NOT HAVING ANY DIFFICULTY GRABBING THE RESULTS.

It’s a rubber tire roller that vibrates with enough centrifugal force to equal the out-put of a 55,000 pound pneumatic. The GW750 handles the toughest HMA mixeswith ease, getting balanced high densities from the top through the bottom of themat. Great on SMA, too! And it provides a sound interlock between new overlaysand profiled surfaces. It’s bonus time!

Every year, thousands of heavy equip-ment buyers flock to the Florida Auctions insearch of Iron at the right price. Many auc-tion companies see a huge opportunity tomove heavy equipment during this time, andthe world’s largest equipment auction com-pany is no different. Over the years, RitchieBros. “The Big One” has grown into thelargest auction event of the season, and thisyear’s auction was no exception. The numbers of the event demonstrate

how massive the scale of this auction truly is.The Ritchie Bros. Orlando site has grown tomore than 200 acres over the years. That’sthe equivalent of almost two hundred foot-ball fields filled with heavy equipment. Forthis year’s auction, approximately 8,300 bid-ders registered to bid on more than 9,400items over six days. The total dollar amountof equipment sold at this year’s auctionstands at $176 million. Preparation for the event must begin

months in advance. Since the Orlando site isa permanent facility owned by Ritchie Bros.,sellers can begin moving their equipmentonto the site weeks ahead of time. As the saledraws near, the Orlando site becomes a per-sonnel whirlpool, drawing in employeesfrom all over the country and Canada toFlorida.“We have a regular staff here all year long,

but as we get closer to the event, our peoplestart coming in from all over,” said RobMackay, president of Ritchie Bros. “Wehave about 200 employees here for the sixdays in Orlando. That includes yard staff, equipment detailers, customer service repre-sentatives, and the temporary workers need-ed to carry out the auction.”The Orlando site also is large enough to

contain an entire equipment refurbishingfacility that is devoted to making the equip-ment look like new on auction day. In theweeks and days leading up to the auction, thefacility resembles an assembly line factory, with equipment being cleaned, painted, andrepaired on a continual basis. Huge 25-ft.bays are filled with equipment waiting to betreated by the Ritchie Bros. staff. This care inpresenting the equipment at its best contin-ues right up until the moment the equipmentrolls on the ramp, as washers give the itemsone final clean before presentation.During the six days of the auction, Ritchie

Bros. relies on its strongest auction callers, and Butch Graham is among them. Graham, who has more than 20 years of experiencecalling Ritchie Bros. auctions, was one ofmany callers present during the action inOrlando. That length of time could stress acaller’s voice to the point of breaking, butGraham takes it all in stride. “I’ve had to

train my voice,” said Graham. “I don’tsmoke, and I use my voice constantly tomake it stronger. I see it as another musclethat needs to be exercised.“Graham estimated that on a good day he

could call an auction “for two hours straight”before needing a rest. “When you do whatyou love, it’s easy,” he said.Once the auction is over, Ritchie Bros.

partnership with UShip ensures the equip-ment gets to where it needs to safely andsecurely. The service allows for real-timeestimates and competitive quotes for movingequipment from the auction site to virtuallyanywhere in the world. In the end, this year’s show was of a scale

rarely seen outside of this seasonal event. Allof the Ritchie Bros. employees will returnhome after a hectic week in the Florida sunafter a job well done. But they won’t get toomuch rest — there is next year’s event toplan for.

Preparation for Event Must Begin Months in Advance

The Ritchie Bros. auction spotters have to have aquick eye to catch bids coming in from the audience.

The Ritchie Bros. Orlando site has grown to more than200 acres over the years, enough room for almost 200football fields.

The registration area is a hub of activity at any RitchieBros. auction, but especially so during “The Big One.”

Butch Graham, a 20 year vet as a Ritchie Bros. auctioncaller, uses his voice as another muscle and trains itas hard as a professional athlete would train theirown muscles.

Large 25-ft. bays are used for the largest pieces of equipment in the refurbishingcenter, which paints, cleans and repairs equipment to specification.

The auction callers take information not only from thecrowd in front of them, but also from information com-ing to them from online bidders.

All of the equipment that goes through the refurbishing center will come out look-ing in tip-top shape, ready to sell to the highest bidder.

Ritchie Bros. Breaks Multiple Site Records in Fort Worth Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers sold more than $44 million

of equipment items and trucks at a two-day unre-served public auction held at its permanent auction

site in Fort Worth, Texas on March 5 and 6.New auction site records were set for total registered bid-

ders (more than 3,900) and total online bidders (more than2,300). Equipment highlights included a 2009 FreightlinerCascadia truck tractor that sold for $49,000 and formed partof the professionally maintained, 23-truck Walmart fleet fea-tured in the Fort Worth auction as well as a 2008 CaterpillarD8T crawler tractor that sold for $282,500. In total, more than 3,100 equipment items and trucks were

sold in the auction for more than 470 sellers — every itemwas sold to the highest bidder, without minimum bids orreserve prices.“This auction offered one of the largest quantities of high-

quality late-model equipment that I have seen at our auctionshere in Fort Worth,” said Adam Kawulok, regional salesmanager, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. “The unprecedentednumber of late-model Caterpillar D8T crawler tractors andprofessionally maintained Walmart trucks that were sold isjust a glimpse of the great collection of well-maintained, late-model equipment that we continue to offer at our Fort Worthauctions. And, with so many of the people bidding in ourauctions being end-users, selection is very important for ourbuying customers. It’s because of that and the ability ofRitchie Bros. to reach buyers from all over — as was shownby the multiple records set at this auction — that we create acompetitive bidding environment which allows us to achievestrong values for the sale of our equipment.”More than 3,900 people from more than 60 countries,

including 48 U.S. states, nine Canadian provinces and oneCanadian territory, registered to bid in person or online inreal time at the auction. Bidders from outside Texas pur-chased more than $24 million (55 percent of total gross auc-tion proceeds).More than 2,300 of the bidders taking part in the auction

registered to bid online and purchased more than $19 millionof equipment online (43 percent of total gross auction pro-ceeds).For more information, visit www.rbauction.com.(This story also can be found on Construction
