(NAPSI)-There seem to be countless thingswe don't think twice about when it comes toprotecting our families. You'd never hit theroad on a long road trip without buckling yourbaby in a car seat. And most people have anightly habit of making sure the house islocked before going to bed. Both are simplethings that become a habit in order to keepyour family safe.

So why are Americans still not taking sim-ple actions to protect t heir families from homefires? According to the United States FireAdministration (USFA), almost 2,500 peopledie every year in home fires. Yet most of thesedeaths occur in homes without working smokealarms.

Did you also know that cooking is the maincause of home fires and home fire injuries? But

it doesn't have to be that way, because Fire isEveryone's Fight. There are simple steps youcan take right now to reduce your risk of ahome fire that could not just injure you or aloved one, but could take a life.

Put smoke alarms in your home to keepyour family safe. Make sure your smokealarms work. Your family is not safe if they

can't hear the smoke alarms. Test your smokealarms. Push the test button. You will hear aloud noise. If you don't hear the noise, you

need a new battery or a new alarm. Fix thisimmediately.

To protect against cooking-related firesand injuries, keep an eye on what you fry. Most cooking fires start when someone is fry-ing food. Hot oil and grease can burn peopleand start fires. Be prepared when cooking andmake the cooking area safe. Make sure chil-dren and pets stay at least 3 feet away from ahot stove. Clean and clear the area around the

stove before you turn on the heat. Turn pothandles toward the back of the stove so noone can bump them or pull them over.

Just as the simple click of a seat belt canbecome a habit that decreases your chance ofbeing injured in a car crash, getting in thehabit of doing these fire safety practices mayhelp save your life or the life of your family oneday. Remember, keeping you safe isn't just thefire department's job.

Simple actions can make the difference in home fires

    PROFESSIONAL/TECHNICAL

The Comfort Of HomeWorking from home is a viable option to many people, but there are several considerations to

take into account before starting an at-home business.First, there is the time consideration. How much time can you devote to your business? If you

are a stay-at-home mom with young children, you may only have nap times to work versus amom whose children are in school for most of the day. Then there is location. Where will youwork? Ideally a separate space or office works best but is not always practical. Be creative whenlooking for an area to work. No matter how ridiculous your idea may seem, if it works, use it.

Coming up with a practical business idea is only a matter of your imagination. Many asuccessful business has started with a single thought. Earmuffs, for example, were first inventedby a mother who sewed fur onto ear-sized caps to protect her sons ears from the cold. However, you dont have to come up with a novel idea to be successfulyou just have to be good at whatyou do. Take these ideas, for example.

If you have a particular area of interest, consider capitalizing on it. One area of high need ismen and women who can do work around the house. Most handymen or jack-of-all-trades arein very high demand and often booked months in advance. If you have painting, drywall, carpentry or minor electrical or plumbing skills, you might consider this as an option. Yourinvestment in tools would probably be minimal since you most likely already have what youllneed. A small budget for initial advertising and insurance is all youll need to get started. Onceestablished, word of mouth is the usual course of obtaining new customers. Your name willspread like wildfire if you do good work and charge a fair price.

Choosing to start a business revolving around your interests can sometimes backfire. Keep inmind the difference between indulging your interests on your own time and having to work tomeet someone elses time schedule. In business, the two are not always compatible.

With little or no money, you can start up any number of businesses. Perhaps you enjoy sewing.A good seamstress is always in high demand. You can specialize in one area like wedding gownsand bridesmaid gowns, custom draperies or clothing alterations. If you are experienced atpainting and wallpapering, you may find your services needed by those who dont have the timeto decorate their own homes. Plant maintenance requires nothing more than water, plant foodand the knowledge to use each properly. Many a young man has started mowing lawns, only tofind years later that he has a booming yard care service. In a metropolitan area, dog walkingmight be a source of income. A retired person who loves animals might find this a pleasant wayto spend an afternoon while getting plenty of exercise, too.

The possibilities are endless. Here are some other ways people work from home: mail ordersales, E-bay sales, financial advisor, bookkeeper, landscaper/gardener, upholsterer, bicycle

repair specialist, house sitter, personal shopper, professional writer, caterer, house cleaner, fooddeliverer, auto detailer, antiques dealer, bed & breakfast, desktop publisher, computer consultant, graphic designer, muralist, estate sale manager, real-estate appraiser, carpenter, wordprocessing/transcriptionist, translater, beautician/color consultant or carpet cleaner.

Working from home is not for everyone, but if you have the time and the desire to succeed, earning an income from the comfort of your own home is a very real possibility.
