General informati on The name Barrackpore, originated from the word barracks, is around 25 kms from the centre of Kolkata. It is an industrial township and cantonment situated on the bank of Hooghly river. The fi rst instance of resistance against the Briti sh ruler was

originated from this place in the form of Sepoy Muti ny in the year 1857. During the Briti sh rule, it used to be the country residence of the Viceroy in offi ce. Barrackpore also has a couple of research insti tutes. One of the main att racti ons of this place is the riverside. There are several ghats which have green river banks and lot of green old trees around. The Barrackpore stati on which is along the track of the suburban railway is something very old and was built by the Briti sh rulers. It looks old but elegant and has an aura of history.

THE SUNDARBANS

Sunderbans, the world’s largest estuarine forest and delta covered by mangrove forests and vast saline mud fl ats is situated on the lower end of Gangeti c West Bengal.
