The Emotional Health Academy was honoured to host visits from local MP Richard Benyon, and Anne Long-field, the Children’s Commissioner for England. They heard about our impact on children and young people’s mental health, and directly observed our work. We have engaged with over 1000 children and young people through individual, small group and classroom based work. 80% of children we support directly reported im-provement in their emotional health and wellbeing. Richard and Anne both spoke highly of what they heard and observed, and were keen to share our innovative work at a national level. More information can be found in the following press releases: MP Richard Benyon Visit http://info.westberks.gov.uk/article/34845 Children’s Commissioner for England, Anne Longfield, Visit http://info.westberks.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=34861

Enabling the Disabled Remap Berkshire is a group of engineers and craftsmen and women who design and build bespoke equipment to meet the individual needs of disabled people to help them achieve greater independence in some aspect of their lives. We design, make and sometimes adapt items which are not otherwise available and everything we make is supplied completely free of charge to the user. Remap is a national charity which has been running for 50 years. It is split up into county sized groups throughout the country. There are around 1000 members country wide with the Berkshire group com-prising 25 members. We currently help about 100 people per year in Berkshire ranging from children in special needs schools to people facing problems in old age. Equipment recently supplied includes a simple long reach window opener constructed from plumbing components, an aid to allow a lady paralysed down one side by a stroke to continue knitting and the detailed modification of the controls of a motorised wheel chair for someone with limited hand and arm movement. One lady helped by Remap was unable to comfortably reach her kitchen sink due to dwarfism. For some years she had been using up-turned plastic storage containers and other items as steps, but this was dangerous and she had recently fallen from them. A Remap engineer visited her in her house to assess the problem. It became clear that some fixed steps with a rail at the back to prevent falling would be required. However fixed steps in front of the sink would have impeded access to the cupboards underneath. The Remap engineer came up with the solu-tion of a purpose built set of steps supported on spring loaded, low friction ball castors. When the lady steps onto the unit it immediately makes contact with the floor and will not move. Once she steps off the unit it can be moved easily out of the way to gain access to the under-sink cupboards. A rail at the back of the unit prevents falls. The picture shows her on the unit, at the kitchen sink and looking out onto her garden. If you would like to arrange a visit from one of our engineers to see how Remap could help you, please contact our Case Officer, Robert Monk on 07790 127 123 or at [email protected] If you would prefer not to make a direct approach and you have an Occupational Therapist you can ask them to make the approach on your behalf. Please don’t worry about the scale of the problem. We are well aware that help with the simplest of tasks can make a big difference to the quality of someone’s life. To see other typical solutions go to www.remapedia.org.uk

Today marks the start of an exciting and historic new chapter in our mission to make travel ac-cessible for disabled people around the world. I am delighted to announce that the Accomable team and myself will be joining the Airbnb family to share our unique knowledge and expertise to make one of the world’s largest travel communities more accessible, and to enable Airbnb to fulfil its mission to create a world where anyone can truly belong anywhere. I launched Accomable with my childhood friend, Martyn, a little over two years ago in simple beginnings. Back in early 2015, I was still learning to code and the Accomable journey was started with a basic web app that I hacked together in my bed-room over a caffeine-fuelled three weeks. Accomable started less as a company or a product but more as a mission and a dream. A mission to open up travel and adventure to hundreds of millions of disabled people; and a dream that one day, I, as a disabled person could travel the world just like everybody else. We’ve chased that dream relentlessly since the very beginning. We’ve built an extraordinary team - Shona, Suzanne, Chris, Uel, Katie and Luke who’ve put their heart and souls into advancing our mission and who’ve always gone above and beyond the call of duty. We’ve raised investment from amazing individuals; and worked together to build a company from absolute scratch. We’ve fought hard to recruit every accessible property, help every traveller and done everything we could to create an awesome experience for anyone looking for an accessible place to stay. Our decision to join Airbnb was one that we spent a long time considering. Our work has allowed us to develop unrivalled expertise in the world of accessible travel, building a brand which disabled travellers can trust. I know many in the Accoma-ble community gained comfort from the fact that Accomable was created with a focus on accessibility and I am very sensi-tive to the fact that some in our community may be concerned that accessibility will again become an afterthought that is drowned out within a larger platform. As someone who built Accomable to address a need we all share in the Accomable community, I very much empathise with any nervousness you may have. To address this, the Accomable team and I have spent considerable time with Airbnb’s founding and senior management teams. During our time at Airbnb, we were left in no doubt that Airbnb shares our mission and we are convinced that joining Airbnb provides the best opportunity to take our dream and mission to a global level, us-ing the current reach of Airbnb’s community to work together and make the world more accessible. So you might ask what does this mean in practice? • I’ll be working with Airbnb’s team and leading our efforts to build upon and improve our accessibility features and fil-ters. My team will be sharing our existing know-how with Airbnb’s various product teams and will work with the community to improve these continuously in the coming months. We will also develop new policies and features to ensure accessibility information is as accurate as possible. • If you are a guest who has booked a trip via Accomable, we’ll be reaching out to you with instructions so you can con-tinue on your vacation just as you planned. If you are a Vendor, we’ll also be contacting you to help ensure you can manage existing reservations and list on Airbnb so you can take advantage of the amazing platform, tools and technologies that Airbnb has created for hosts. Ultimately, Accomable’s website will redirect to Airbnb, but during the transition, Accomable’s listings will remain on accomable.com. Potential guests can reach hosts via an email address posted on each listing. • My team will be working with existing Airbnb hosts around the world to find properties that could have suitable acces-sibility features and will work with such hosts to make their properties more discoverable with Airbnb’s new filters. • We’ll be applying our expertise beyond the flagship Homes business and working with teams in Trips and future prod-uct lines to make sure that accessibility is at the heart of Airbnb and usable to people with accessibility needs. • At Accomable, despite our best intentions, we sometimes struggled due to a lack of resources to cater for users with disabilities beyond those which are mobility based. This was something that greatly frustrated me. At Airbnb, we can now drive forward all existing efforts to make sure Airbnb can accommodate as wide a variety of disabilities as possible. • We’re not going to rest at making the Airbnb platform more usable. We’re going to work tirelessly to grow the Airbnb community and to empower disabled entrepreneurs to share their homes and create awesome local experiences for visiting travellers. • I’ll be working with the Diversity and Belonging team to make sure that Airbnb is doing everything it can to make sure that it is a great place to work at if you have a disability. As such, I’ll be helping create new initiatives to increase the num-bers of disabled applicants. • I see this as just the beginning of something that will be a profound game changer in the world of accessibility. I will continue to be an advocate and champion for better accessibility and for the use of technology to help disabled people. In-novation and creativity will always be at the heart of any team I’m responsible for, so stay tuned as we try to push the boundaries on everything from cutting-edge new technology to empowering new community partnerships! It’ll take some time to implement many of these goals, so bear with us over the coming months! I also want to be available and open to feedback on what we can do better and will be operating a series of channels that will help ensure we can stay connected and I can hear your ideas. You can also reach us by emailing [email protected].

Family Fund is the UK’s largest charity providing grants to families raising disabled or seriously ill children and young people. They can help with a wide range of grants including family breaks, sensory toys, computers and tablets, and much more, to help break down some of the barriers that families face on a daily basis and ease the additional pressures. Their support is not just financial – their Digital Skills workshops cov-er a range of useful topics including customising devices to address vision, hearing, motor and learning needs, while their sleep support hub, Tired Out, contains useful tips and resources to help families get a good night’s sleep. Seven year old Harrison has autism, and recently his mum, Ashley, applied for a grant for sensory equipment to help him calm down and get a good night’s sleep. Ashley explained, “At one point, he would wake up about an hour after I put him to bed and then he’d be up all night. Since we introduced the sensory toys and lights into his room, he’s stayed in there every single night, the lights are now part of his bedtime routine.” Ashley said, “We are immensely grateful to Family Fund for the grant, the difference it’s made has just been incredible.” To find out more, including how to apply, please visit their website (http://www.familyfund.org.uk) or call Family Fund on 01904 550055. You can also keep up with the latest news from Family Fund on Fa-cebook (Facebook.com/FamilyFund), Twitter (@FamilyFund) and Instagram (@Family_Fund).

We have three different groups at PALS: •Fun Factory •PYC Club •18+ Group You can find out more about the types of activities each group take part in below.

Fun Factory Our Fun Factory club, for children aged from five to 11, runs weekly activities, including: •craft sessions - where we make and create •cooking sessions - where children get the chance to learn basic cookery skills •indoor games and sports - which allow the children to develop physical and team work skills •interactive workshops from local businesses and charities

PALS Youth Club (PYC) When young people reach 11 years old, they can join our PYC group, which is aimed at increasing their independence and social opportunities. The club meets twice a month on a Friday night, and of-fers the chance to relax, meet up with friends, play a game of football or rounders or play on our Wii console. PYC is split into two age ranges, 11 to 16 and 16 to 18. We run separate sessions for each age range, with an overlap between the sessions so everyone can get to know each other.

The 18+ Group The 18+ group get together once a month to socialise and relax, with members deciding what they would like to do. Regular choices include: •trips to local pubs •meals out •bowling •movie nights The activities provided give children and young people the opportunity to develop socially, but also give parents a well earned break and time with other members of the family. Members are left in the capable hands of our team. We are not a respite service, but we are here for your child to make friends and have fun! Parents are expected to provide transport for their child to activities, but for some events we do in-clude transport to the activity from a set meeting point, particularly when we’re going somewhere out of the area.
