West Coast Discovery Program: Course Description

Travel through the spectacular coastal terrain of Vancouver Island's west coast on this sea kayaking and coastal hiking course. During the sea kayak portion of this incredible expedition, you will paddle through the coves, natural harbours, and small islands in and around Clayoquot Sound.You’ll travel in double or single sea kayaks learning and practicing many ocean travel skills: paddling and bracing techniques, ocean navigation using nautical charts and tide tables, and safety and rescue skills. Clayoquot Sound, declared by UNESCO a biosphere reserve, is a maze of old-growth cedar covered islands and protected inlets, rocky reefs, sandy beaches, deep fjords and natural hot springs.Clayoquot Sound is one of the most beautiful places in the world; share this exquisitemarine environment with resident pods of grey whales, seals, sea otters and sea lions,as well as bald eagles and rich inter-tidal marine life.During the land portion of the course, you’ll trek along beautiful coastal trails, into old growth forest and up into the rugged higher regions to gain spectacular views of the Sound.The West Coast Discovery program includes a 48 hour solo experience, community service project, and Outward Bound leadership training and interpersonal development. You will learn skills in wilderness travel and navigation, backcountry cooking over fires and stoves, leave no - trace camping, campcraft and wilderness etiquette and safety. Course activities include a multi-day sea kayaking expedition, coastal hiking and backpacking, and surfing.

THE OUTWARD BOUND CANADA EXPERIENCE

The goal of every Outward Bound expedition is toteach you and your group the skills necessary to lead

yourselves. Often, you will find that the wildernessenvironment is your best teacher; it will present youand your peers with unique challenges to face andreal problems to solve. Your Instructors, seasoned

wilderness educators who know when to step in andwhen to step back, will help you develop the skillsnecessary to face these obstacles with style and

West Coast Discovery Program: Itinerary & LogisticsProgram Length: 21 daysProgram Dates: July 3-24, 2012Location: Program start and end in Tofino, BritishColumbia, Canada.Travel Details: Students can fly to Vancouver airport(YVR) and from YVR’s South Terminal (there is acomplimentary shuttle service between the MainTerminal and South Terminal) direct to Tofino viaOrca Air, a small prop-engine carrier. We are workingon getting a group discount on flights, but generally,flights from YVR to Tofino will cost $412/studentreturn. There are several flights between YVR andTofino per day in summer, our usual arrival time forstudents is the 1pm flight.

Course Cost: $4195 CAD per person, based on a minimum of 8 students per patrol (maximum is 10).$4180 USD

•Course costs include: all in course transportation, food, camping, sea kayaking, surfing and backpacking-specific equipment.•Course costs do not include: personal clothing and equipment (see clothing list), transportation to and from Tofino, BC, meals or accommodation before or after course start and end dates, medical or flight cancellation insurance, air fare ticket.Participant Screening & Enrollment: Traditional student age for Outward Bound Canada’s “Discovery” courses is between 16-18. Student screening and admissions can be handled through OBC’s Admissions department.
