2019 UWG FOOTBALL | GM. 3 | ALBANY ST. 2

HEAD COACH DAVID DEANBy any measure David Dean’s first two seasons as head football coach at the University of West Georgia were a success. Dean arrived in Carrollton in January 2017, on the eve of signing day, and led the Wolves to nine victories and a return to the NCAA Division II Playoffs. In his second season last year, West Georgia won 10 games and reached the playoffs for the fourth time in the past five seasons. In the second week of the season in 2019, Dean stepped even more into history, becoming the third coach in Gulf South Conference history with 100 wins in his career. Were there up-and-downs, and some disappoint-ments? Certainly, but from start to finish, Dean put his stamp on a veteran roster and veteran coaching staff. The result was a Wolves team back in the national picture in Division II football. A 9-4 record and a play-off spot came in year one under Dean, followed by a 10-2 record, top-five national ranking and the fourth trip to the NCAA Playoffs in the past five seasons came in year two. Dean was no stranger to the Carrollton campus when he returned to UWG last season. He brought with him a resume that would rival any coach in the nation. As an assistant or as a head coach, David Dean and his football teams are winners. A former wide receiver at Georgia Tech, Dean got his introduction to the wars of Gulf South Conference football in 1988 when he began a four-year run on the staff at Valdosta State. In 1992 Dean moved to Car-rollton for an eight-year run on the staff at West Geor-gia. That stint included the first winning season at the Division II level, the first NCAA D-II Playoff berth, and the program’s first two Gulf South Conference titles. Dean departed UWG following the 1999 season, joining the staff of Chris Hatcher at Valdosta Sate. He spent seven seasons as the Blazers’ offensive coor-dinator, a run that included the 2004 NCAA Division II Championship. In 2007 Dean ascended to the head coaching post at VSU. He had to assemble a coaching staff almost from the ground up as all but one fellow staff member moved on. The results were positive

as Valdosta State posted a 13-1 record and won the program’s second national championship. Five years later, Dean was back in the winner’s cir-cle again. This time the Blazers lost twice in the regular season, but they were untouchable in the playoffs, av-eraging 42 points a game during a postseason march to a second national title. That second national title with the Blazers put Dean in rare company. College football has been played in the state of Georgia since the 1890s, and during that time only three football coaches in this state have won multiple national titles. Erskine Russell won three FCS crowns at Georgia Southern, while Paul Johnson followed him in Statesboro with a pair of championships of his own, and now it is also David Dean. Dean’s run as head coach at Valdosta State cov-ered nine seasons. Beyond the two national crowns, his Blazer teams posted an impressive record of 79-27, including a mark of 42-19 in games played with the nation’s best Division II conference, the Gulf South. His teams advanced to the NCAA Playoffs six times, and Dean’s postseason head coaching record is 13-6. The success of Dean’s Valdosta State program resulted in numerous individual plaudits. He captured American Football Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year honors following both national titles. He was also named 2007 Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, and GSC Coach of the Year in 2010. Beyond his individual success, Dean’s VSU players captured the highest of honors. His VSU teams had 18 Division II All-America selections, while 10 players signed National Football League contracts. Dean also coached three players who earned GSC Freshman of the Year honors, two league players of the year, and a national defensive player of the year. Clearly, David Dean has been linked to success throughout his 30-year coaching career. At UWG or at UWG’s biggest rival, the results are irrefutable: David Dean is a winner. His teams win and his program flour-ishes. As Dean begins his first season at UWG, he is

following the most successful three-year run in the history of the Wolves’ program. Few coaches have the gravitas to continue, and even increase that level of success. Dean is a native of DeKalb County in the metro Atlanta area. He was born in Decatur, and enjoyed a stellar high school career for the Avondale Blue Devils. Dean arrived at Georgia Tech as a walk-on in 1982, but was awarded a scholarship the following season. He played wide receiver for the Jackets through the 1985 campaign. Married to the former Stacie Stott, the Deans have three daughters: Caroline, Allison, and Natalie.

The Golden Rams Last WeekAlbany State moved to 0-2 against the Gulf South Conference last weekend, falling 24-17 to the Missis-sippi College Choctaws on the road. The Golden Rams jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first half and outgained the Choctaws 324-227 in the game, but a furious 24-7 run in the second half was too much to overcome. Mis-sissippi College held the ball for nearly the entirety of the final four minutes of the contest, scoring the game-win-ning touchdown with 27 seconds left in the contest to take the victory.

Freshman of the Week Redshirt freshman running back Chauncey Williams was close to the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week award in the opening week with 46 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The Norcross native left no doubt this week, picking up 218 yards on 21 carries with two more touchdowns to earn not only GSC Freshman of the Week honors, but he was also named GSC Offensive Player of the Week as well. Willie Candler was the last UWG player to earn that honor, winning it on November 5, 2018.

Leading on the DefenseIn the opener against Catawba, the defensive line had the bulk of the tackles near the top of the stat sheet. Against Limestone, it was the secondary’s turn to get in on the tackling. Four of the top six tacklers for the Wolves against Limestone were safeties, including nine from senior safety Chris Blackston. Deontae Overstreet was next among the secondary with seven, followed by M.J. Latimer with six and Jalen Bustamante with four. Of those four safeties, only one was an upperclassman and the others were freshmen.

Three-Headed AttackWest Georgia opened the 2019 season with a three-headed attack at tailback after a 179-yard rushing output last week. Eric Swinney, the senior transfer from Ole Miss, led the way with three carries for 62 yards and a touchdown in Week 1. The touchdown was a big play as the final score of the game against Catawba, a 48-yard burst off the left side of the line. Redshirt freshman Chauncey Williams had 11 carries for 46 yards and two touchdowns on the day to lead the scoring effort. Rajaez Mosley, a true freshman who was playing in his first game last week, rushed eight times for 40 yards. He will likely be the starter for the Wolves this week.

Weekly HonorsThe first Gulf South Conference weekly award came the way of the wolf this past Monday, as freshman running back Chauncey Williams was named the Offensive Play-er of the Week for his performance against Limestone. But the Norcross native didn’t stop there, as he was also named the GSC Freshman of the Week for his 218-yard night, which was the fifth-best rushing night for any back in school history.

Next Level WolvesAlex Armah (‘16) continues to be the standard for West Georgia players at the next level, as he remains the starting fullback for the Carolina Panthers. Marcus Sayles (‘16) has been outstanding for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers this year, blocking two punts thus far. Malik Henry (‘18) has been added to the San Francisco 49ers practice squad and Devontae Jackson made it to the final cut with the Denver Broncos. He is expected to sign with an NFL practice squad.

THE LAST MEETINGSept. 15, 2018 - Carrollton, Ga. The third game of the 2018 season saw the West Georgia Wolves travel south to Albany, Ga. to take on the Albany State Golden Rams. The Wolves racked up more than 500 yards of total offense and LaPerion Perry returned his first kickoff for a touchdown en route to a 45-21 victory for UWG in the final warmup before Gulf South Conference play was set to begin. A week after his first 300-yard game, junior quarterback Willie Candler was highly efficient in this one, completing 15-of-20 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns. Candler added 86 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground to produce four of the Wolves scores on the day. Devontae Jackson added 18 carries for 145 yards and a touchdown. On the defensive side, Montrell Pardue led the way with nine tackles, while T.J. Fehoko and Chad Price each picked up a sack in the win. Senior cornerback Ashton Jackson also picked off a pass for his first interception of the year.

The Wolves Last WeekWest Georgia’s offensie line took over the game against Limestone, blocking for a rushing attack that produced 351 yards en route to a 24-14 victory on the road in Gaffney, SC. Korie Rogers intercepted a pass and M.J. Latimer recovered a fumble to lead a defense that allowed Limestone to gain 130 yards less than they had the week prior. The Saints had 300 yards of offense, including just 112 passing.

National RankingsWest Georgia enters Week 2 of the 2019 season with a better spot on the board than originally during the preseason. The Wolves were ranked 15th by the AFCA and 14th by D2football.com in the preseason rankings, and moved up in both polls after Week 1. UWG comes into the LImestone game ranked 14th in the AFCA poll and 13th in the D2football.com rankings that were released earlier this week.

UWG vs. Albany State HistoryEight meetings have happened between the West Georgia Wolves and the Albany State Golden Rams, with four in Albany and four in Carrollton. West Georgia has a sizeable lead in the series history, winning seven of the eight meetings. While six of the eight have been victories for either side by two or more scores, there have been two meetings where the score was close. In 2016, West Georgia won by a 27-23 score, holding off a last ditch effort as time expired. In 2002 in Albany, UWG won 32-29 in dramatic fashion.

Rushing Yardage RecordsWest Georgia rushed for 351 yards last weekend against Limestone, marking the 10th-best night for total rushing yards in school history. The last time a UWG squad topped the 300-yard rushing mark was against Fort Valley State in the 2017 season. The top rushing game in school history happened against Samford in 1984, when West Georgia rushed for a whopping 463 yards. Two times in program history, a UWG squad has gone over 400 yards rushing. The other 400-yard game was against Mississippi College in 2014.

UWG Milestones Chauncey Williams had a night to remember against Limestone last week, rushing 21 times for 218 yards and two touchdowns in the game. That marks the fifth-best rushing total in a single game in school history, tying UWG Hall-of-Fame running back Stevie Young against Mississippi College in 1985. Williams had a 92-yard touchdown run against the Saints, just the fourth time in school history that a player has had a 90-yard play from scrimmage.

The Magnificent SevenThe front seven for the West Georgia defense will be a tough nut to crack for opposing offenses. Within the front seven for UWG this season are three play-ers with NFL Draft grades entering the 2019 season. Auzoyah “Big Z” Alufohai joins Chad Price and Korie Rogers with that honor. Alufohai transferred to UWG from Kennesaw State, while Rogers is in his third season after transferring from Clemson. Price is a homegrown talent, signing with West Georgia out of Brookwood high school in 2015. He redshirted in 2015 and began his playing career in 2016.

2019 UWG FOOTBALL | GM. 3 | ALBANY ST. 5

THIS DAY IN UWG FOOTBALL HISTORYSept. 21, 1996 For three consecutive years (1993-95) West Georgia had opened its football season vs. Elon Fighting Christians. Elon had thumped UWG in the 1993 openers in Burling-ton, N.C., while West Georgia had rebounded with wins in 1994 and ’95. The 1994 game was especially notable for its finish: the famous Mark Eldred-to-Chad Walker “Hail Mary” game winning touchdown with 7.8 second remaining the game. The 1996 meeting between West Georgia and Elon would mark the end of the four-game series between the two schools. Elon was in the process of leaving the South Atlantic Conference and NCAA Division II as they were heading into their transition period as part of the move into what is now known as Division I-FCS. There were be no drama on this night to rival the game from two years earlier. West Georgia pounded Elon, 48-14. UWG’s rushing attack led the way on this night as tailbacks Brent Daniels and Mathis Curry posted big numbers, rushing for 112 and 99 yards, respectively. Each ran for two touchdowns. Also, UWG’s fullbacks, Kevin Carroll and Harold Farmer each ran for a touch-down. UWG scored a pair of first quarter TDs on runs by Curry and Carroll. However, Elon tried to battle back in the second period, cutting their deficit to 21-14. However, West Georgia got TDs from Daniels and Farmer in the final 1:27 of the half to push their lead to 35-14 at intermission. The run game worked so well on this night that UWG Hall of Fame QB Toby Strange only went to the air 17 times. However, he completed 12 as Byron Slack and Nakia Morgan had four catches each. One of Slack’s reception accounted for West Georgia’s other touchdown on the evening. Heroes on this night were not limited to the West Georgia offense. UWG’s defense limited Elon to 313 total yards, and they forced four turnovers. Linebacker Keeto Hayes and safety Reggie Lewis had pass inter-ceptions, while end Ken Lowenburg and safety Andre Gilliam had fumble recoveries. Also, future Hall of Fame linebacker Casey Pennone led the night with 10 tackles. Following the victory, the UWG coaching staff handed out its honors. Daniels was named the offensive player of the game, end Rick Swales was selected top defensive player, and reserve tight end Jimmy Jackson was selected the night’s top special teams player. This win over Elon was West Georgia’s fourth straight to begin the 1996 season. UWG had earlier won road games over Newberry and Jacksonville State, fol-lowed by a home blowout over Arkansas-Monticello. For the season, West Georgia’s 1996 team ended the regular season with a record of 9-2, and received a second straight bid to the NCAA Division II Playoffs.

2019 UWG FOOTBALL | GM. 3 | ALBANY ST. 7

GAME NOTES: OFFENSEGaining ExperienceNine players picked up their first career start at West Georgia in the first weekend as the Wolves continued to gain in experience. That group grew by one this past weekend, as Eric Swinney picked up his first start. The senior was stellar in the win with nine carris for 75 yards. He enters week three of the season third in the Gulf South Conference in rushing yards per game, averaging 68.5 yards per game. He is leading the league in yards per carry at 11.4.

The Running GameTwo games into the season and the UWG rushing at-tack is at the top of the Gulf South Conference, as the Wolves are averaging 249.5 yards per game on the ground. West Georgia had six players combine for 179 yards in the opener against Catawba, then four went for 351 yards against Limestone this past weekend. That included 218 from the redshirt freshman Williams. The Wolves are second in the league in rushing touch-downs, putting up four scores in the opener followed by three this past weekend. WIlliams leads the team with four touchdowns on the season.

Explosive PlaysWest Georgia had five plays of 20 or more yards against Limestone in the second week of the season. One of those was a pass, and the other four were on the ground. Eric Swinney had two rushes for 22 yards, but Chauncey Williams had the biggest play, a 92-yard touchdown run. That was the third-longest play from scrimmage in school history and was just the fourth time a West Georgia player has had a play from scrim-mage of 90 or more yards.

Willie Candler WatchUWG quarteback Willie Candler continues to move forward in the UWG record books, but enters the third game of the 2019 season in search of his first passing touchdown of the year. The senior has completed 64.7 percent of his passes thus far on the season for 304 yards and has taken care of the ball in a big way, throwing no interceptions through the first two games. The Wolves didn’t need his arm for success against Limestone last week, though, as the team rushed for 351 yards. Candler had several first-down scrambles on third down in the contest and picked up his second rushing touchdown of the season on a zone read in the third quarter.

Next Back UpWith starting running back Christian Royalston out, head coach David Dean needed the three backs behind the sophomore in the depth chart to step up. They did just that, as redshirt freshman carried the ball 21 times for 218 yards and two touchdowns in the game to lead the effort and earn both Offensive and Freshman Player of the Week from the Gulf South Conference. Senior Eric Swinney was also outstanding, carrying the rock nine times for 75 yards in the win.

GAME NOTES: DEFENSEStaying Off the FieldIf the Wolves’ defense continues this trend, there will be very few opportunities for tackles in the 2019 season. That has been a trend over the past six seasons, as the UWG defense has had a penchant for getting off the field quickly. In the first weekend against Catawba, the Wolves were only on the field for 55 plays defensively, giving plenty of rest for those who were out there. The coaching staff played 23 players in those 55 snaps, putting tackles at a premium.

On the Front LinesWith three NFL prospects in the front seven, expect opposing offenses to have tough sledding against the West Georgia front line. Chad Price and Korie Rogers have solid experience at this level, but the coaching staff expects Auzoyah “Big Z” Alufohai to be a force in the middle. At 6-foot-4, 320 lbs, Big Z will make things difficult on teams to run in the middle. Try the outside and meet Gardenhire or Price on either side. Get past any of those three and the backs will have to contend with Rogers and Matthew Parker at linebacker.

Week Two RoundupThe Wolves faced a potent offensive attack in the Limestone Saints, a team that put up 430 yards of offense against another Gulf South Conference team, the West Alabama Tigers, in week one. West Georgia kept the Saints in check throughout the game, allow-ing just 318 yards of offense in the game. The Wolves are tops in the GSC, allowing just 102 yards passing thus far on th eyear.

Instant ImpactIn the first week of the season, it was tackle by committee, as just one player had more than four tackles in the game. This past week, there was more separation on the stat sheet, with senior safety Chris Blackston leading the way with nine tackles in the contest. Korie Rogers was second in the game with seven stops and leads the team with 13 tackles overall on the year.

Turnovers ForcedThe Wolves have been a ball-hawking team thus far through the first two games of the year, forcing four turnovers while giving up only one. Senior linebacker Korie Rogers had eight tackles and his first interception of the season against Limestone and redshirt freshman safety M.J. Latimer also had a pick, the first of his career. Latimer had six tackles to go along with the interception.

Tackles for a LossThe UWG defense comes into the third week of the season with eight tackles for a loss thus far. The Wolves delivered on four tackles for a loss in the opener against Catawba, then repeated that number against Limestone in the second week. Seven differ-ent players have a tackle for a loss, with only Korie Rogers with more than one, as he comes into the week with two for a loss of three yards. T.J. Fehoko had a sack against Limestone, one of three different players who had a tackle for a loss in the game.

For the first time since the 2015 season, there will not be someone named Jackson in the back-field for the University of West Georgia, as former All-American Devontae Jackson has moved on via graduation to the next level, spending the last five months with the Denver Broncos. In the first year under head coach David Dean, West Georgia boasted the fifth-best rushing total in program history, rushing for 2,376 yards in 13 games. Year two in 2018 saw the Wolves come within a yard of that total, rushing for 2,375 yards in just 12 games. The new mantle in 2019 will be taken up by a stable of young and capable backs. Christian Roy-alston was the backup in 2018 as a true freshman and won the starting job for 2019 in spring practice and fall drills in preparation for the year. Behind him is a trio of solid backs in Rajaez Mosley, Chauncey Williams, and Eric Swinney. Mosley is a true fresh-man from Valdosta, Williams is a redshirt freshman from Norcross and Swinney transferred to UWG after three years at Ole Miss.
