Following a solid start to the 2017 season on August 31, the Wolves now turn their attention to another Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe, as the Miles Golden Bears come to town on Saturday evening. The rivalry between the Wolves and Golden Bears now stretches to a seventh-straight season, as the two teams have met in each year since 2011. West Georgia has won five of the six meetings, including last year in Fairfield, Ala., where the Wolves won handily by a score of 29-0. THIS WEEK’S GAME The West Georgia Wolves come into Saturday’s contest riding high after a 34-9 victory over Fort Valley State in the 2017 opener on August 31. The win caught the eye of the American Football Coaches Associa- tion, as the Wolves earned a top-25 ranking for the first time since ear- ly in the 2015 season, checking in at 25th this week. Miles started the season 0-1 last week, falling at the hands of Division I Alcorn State in their season opener. The Golden Bears fell behind 24-7 in the opening half and never recovered in th second half, losing 50-21 on the road. GARDENHIRE WINS GSC WEEKLY AWARD Following a solid week one performance, defensive end Deandre Gardenhire became the fourth member of the 2017 roster to win a Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week award. The Kingsland, Ga. native had six tackles in his UWG debut, leading the Wolves on the defensive side of the ball. He had three solo tackles and three assists, and had his first tackle for a loss in the win over Fort Valley State. RUNNING BACKS OPEN STRONG IN 2017 Senior Travis Custis and junior Devontae Jackson had a solid start to the 2017 season last Thursday, as the pair com- bined for 185 yards on 22 carries with two touchdowns against Fort Valley State. Custis had 95 yards and two scores while Jackson had 90 yards and moved into the top-10 among all-time running backs at West Georgia. Their efforts powered the Wolves to more than 300 yards rushing on the night. DEFENSE OPENS ALLOWING VERY LITTLE Since Scott Symons came to West Georgia in 2014, the UWG defense has routinely been among the best in the nation. Things haven’t changed on that front for the Wolves, as Symons’ defense allowed just 227 yards against FVSU on Thurs- day, including a paltry 88 yards in the first half. The most times in a season that UWG allowed less than 300 yards was 2015, when the Wolves allowed less than 300 in 10 of 14 contests. Head Coach David DeanIn late January the University of West Georgia was faced with the task of filling a vacancy as head football coach. The job wasn’t vacant very long. David Dean was available; ready, willing, and eager to become UWG’s 11th head football coach of the modern era. Dean brings a resume to the UWG post that rivals almost any coach in the nation, at any level. Dean is this season entering his 30th season in the coaching pro-fession, his ninth at West Georgia. There is one common thread to his 29 previous seasons: David Dean is a winner. The former wide receiver at Georgia Tech was a key staff member at Valdosta State from 1988-1991. He next spent eight seasons on the staff at UWG, an era that saw the program experience a large number of firsts. That includes the first winning season at the Division II level, the first NCAA D-II Playoff berth, and the program’s first two Gulf South Conference titles. Dean departed UWG following the 1999 season, joining the staff of Chris Hatcher at Valdosta Sate. He spent seven seasons as the Blazers’ offensive coordina-tor, a run that included the 2004 NCAA Division II Championship. In 2007 Dean ascended to the head coaching post at VSU. He had to assemble a coaching staff almost from the ground up as all but one fellow staff member moved on. The results were positive as Valdosta State posted a 13-1 and won the program’s second national championship. Five years later, Dean was back in the winner’s circle again. This time the Blazers lost twice in the regular season, but they were untouchable in the playoffs, averaging 42 points a game during a postseason run to a second national title. How rare is a second national championship? Consider that college foot-ball has been played in the state of Georgia since the 1890s. During that time only three football coaches in the state have won multiple national titles. Erskine Russell won three FCS title at Georgia Southern, while Paul Johnson followed him in States-boro with a pair of crowns of his own. The other coach on that very exclusive list is David Dean. Dean’s run as head coach at Valdosta State covered nine seasons. Beyond the two national crowns, his Blazer teams posted an impressive record of 79-27, including a mark of 42-19 in games played with the nation’s best Division II confer-ence, the Gulf South. His teams advanced to the NCAA Playoffs six times, and Dean’s postseason head coaching record is 12-4. The success of Dean’s Valdosta State program resulted in numerous indi-vidual plaudits. He captured American Football Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year honors following both national titles. He was also named 2007 Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, and GSC Coach of the Year in 2010. Beyond his individual success, Dean’s VSU players captured the highest of honors. His VSU teams had 18 Division II All-America selections, while 10 players signed National Football League contracts. Dean also coached three players who earned GSC Freshman of the Year honors, two league players of the year, and one national defensive player of the year. Clearly, David Dean has been linked to success throughout his 30-year coaching career. At UWG or at UWG’s biggest rival, the results are irrefutable: David Dean is a winner. His teams win and his program flourishes. As Dean begins his first season at UWG, he is following the most suc-cessful three-year run in the history of the Wolves’ program. Few coaches have the gravitas to continue, and even increase that level of success. Dean is a native of DeKalb County in the metro Atlanta area. He was born in Decatur, and enjoyed a stellar high school career for the Avondale Blue Devils. Dean arrived at Georgia Tech as a walk-on in 1982, but was awarded a scholarship the following season. He played wide receiver for the Jackets through the 1985 cam-paign. Married to the former Stacie Stott, the Deans have three daughters: Caro-line (20), Allison (18), and Natalie (12).

Game PreviewJust one week into the David Dean era at West Georgia and things are going pretty well. The Wolves have a 34-9 victory under their belts, the first national ranking of the year and the first weekly confer-ence award. But that was just week one. Now, it’s time for Week 2, and with the second week of the season brings another proud SIAC program to University Stadium and Ra-Lin Field, as the Wolves play host to Miles College on Saturday evening. The Wolves come into the week with a 1-0 record on the year after a lopsided win over Fort Valley State last week. The running attack led the way for the Wolves, as UWG racked up over 300 yards rushing and more than 500 total yards in the home opener victory. The win was the fifth season opening victory at University Stadium in the first-ever meeting between West Georgia and Fort Valley State.

Game PreviewDon’t let the score fool you. The Miles Golden Bears are a team that has been in contention for the SIAC title in nearly every year that Reginald Ruffin has been at the helm. The Bears come into Week 2 of the season with an 0-1 record after a 50-21 loss at the hands of Division I Alcorn State this past weekend. Miles’ attack depended largely on the running game, as the Bears rushed for nearly 200 yards in a lopsided loss, fueled by a 100-yard performance from junior running back Justin Hardy. Two of the Miles touchdowns came via the offense, and the other came on a defensive score, as N’Ktavious Floyd picked off a pass in the first half and returned it 71 yards for the touchdown. Sophomore linebacker Austin Stephens leads a very athletic defense into University Stadium this weekend. Stephens had 12 tackles and an interception against Alcorn State in the opener.

Delta State, Florida Tech, West Alabama, and West Georgia were each dominant in their opening matchups, with each team winning by at least two touchdowns in Week 1. West Florida also opened with a victory, sneaking past Missouri S&T by a 20-16 final. The shockers of the week came from three different contests, as defending national runner-up North Alabama lost 8-7 to Texas A&M-Commerce. Valdosta State was soundly defeated by Albany State 29-12 and Mississippi College lost a heartbreaker to Clark Atlanta, 32-29. Short-er also lost in the opening week, falling at home to Mars Hill. The Turnover GameThe West Georgia defense produced one turnover against Fort Valley State in the opening game, as senior safety Montrell Pardue picked off his first pass of the season. Pardue looked to return the pick for six, but the ball slipped out of his hands and went out of bounds, giving the UWG offense the ball deep in Fort Valley State territory.

Building DepthDepth was something that defensive coordinator Scott Symons had plenty of in the past two seasons. This year, the Wolves are talented across the board on de-fense, but experienced depth in Gulf South Conference play is lacking. Of the top four tacklers for the UWG defense against Fort Valley State, three were com-peting on Ra-Lin Field for the first time. Twenty-four different players had at least one tackle in the first game of the year.

Gardenhire earns honorsFreshman defensive end Deandre Gardenhire had a solid start to his UWG career against Fort Valley State, collect-ing six tackles in the contest, which led the team on the night. That earned accolades from the Gulf South Con-ference, as the Kingsland, Ga. native earned Freshman of the Week honors. He joins Zed Brown as two defenders on this year’s roster to have earned that award in their careers at UWG.

Townsend makes a splashTransfer defensive tackle Ledarius Townsend had the first sack of the season for the 2017 UWG

defense against Fort Valley State. He ended the night a tackle for a loss, which was a sack in the second quarter. As a team, the Wolves had two sacks on opening night. Townsend had the first, followed by sophomore defensive end Chad Price and redshirt freshman safety Austin Barron, who teamed up for a half-sack each.

Dominant DefenseSince Scott Symons took over the defense for West Georgia in 2014, the Wolves have been much more stingy than ever before. In that span, West Georgia has had 41 games, and the UWG defense has allowed 300 yards or less in 22 of those contests. One would think that a 227-yard performance for the defense against Fort Valley State would rank high on the list, but the opening night performance ranks just 13th among the best overall yard-age allowed by the Wolves in the past four years. To get into the top-10, the defense would have to allow nearly less than 200 yards.

Vs. Miles under SymonsThe West Georgia defense under Symons has been strict, and four different schools show up among the top-15 total yardage performances since 2014. Miles is the only opponent among those that has been on

that list in every season that Symons has been the defensive coordinator at West Georgia, and the numbers have gotten better for UWG in each season. The first game against the Golden Bears netted 244 yards against the UWG defense in 2014. The 2015 game saw Miles with 215 yards, followed by just 140 yards in a shutout victory for the Wolves in 2016 on the road.

Breakdown - PassingPassing against the UWG defense was not very suc-cessful for Fort Valley State, as the Wolves allowed just 107 yards passing on the night. Four different players had a pass breakup on the evening and the Wolves harassed the Wildcat quarterbacks consistent-ly. Linebacker Korie Rogers was the only player with a break up and a quarterback hurry on the evening. True freshman defensive end Chris Lewis had the other hurry. Montrell Pardue had the only intercep-tion of the night and a pass breakup. Zed Brown and Montreal Henry each also had a pass breakup in the victory.

Breakdown - RushingThe UWG defense allowed just 227 yards of total offense against Fort Valley State in the season opener, with 120 of those coming on the ground. The Wolves threw a lot of bodies at the FVSU running backs, and came away with three tackles for a loss that were not sacks. Junior linebacker Cam Magee, freshman de-fensive end Deandre Gardenhire and senior defensive end Alvonte Bell each had a tackle for a loss in the contest. One back for Fort Valley State had 66 yards on the night.

Kicking GameTwo local products stole the show in the kicking game for the Wolves against Fort Valley State. Trey Wiggins, out of Heard County High School and a true freshman, had 10 points on the night, hitting on two field goals and four extra points. Christian Ramiriez handled all of the kicking and punting duties, averaging 47.0 yards per punt on the night and putting one kickoff in the end zone for a touchback.

500 Yards of OffenseThe West Georgia offense looked to be in midseason

form in the opening week of the season against Fort

Valley State, racking up 532 yards of offense in the

contest. It was the sixth time for the UWG offense to go

over 500 yards since Sam Gregg became the offensive

coordinator in 2014. The Wolves have had two-straight

games with at least 500 yards dating back to the 2016

season, when West Georgia ended the year with 561

yards of offense against West Florida.

Rushing AttackIn 2016, the Wolves’ rushing attack was strong, but not

as strong as in the past. In the 2014 and 2015 seasons,

West Georgia had zero games with less than 100 yards

rushing. Twice last year, the Wolves rushed for less than

100 yards. The start in 2017 looks as though the running

attack has returned, as the Wolves rushed for 305 yards

on opening night against a very big defensive front from

Fort Valley State.

Winning the Turnover GameTurnovers always play a vital role in wins and losses. The

Wolves had zero interceptions in the first game of the

2017 season and just one fumble. West Georgia had one

takeaway in the game, so the Wolves enter the second

week of the season with a turnover ratio of 1/1.

Custis/Jackson ShowSenior running back Travis Custis and junior Devontae

Jackson powered the UWG offense to a 300-yard rush-

ing game in the opener. The pair had 11 carries each

against Fort Valley State, combining for 185 yards and

two touchdowns. Custis led the way on the night with

95 yards and two scores while Jackson added 90 yards.

Six different Wolves carried the ball in the contest, with

sophomore transfer Mikell Lands-Davis and Willie Candler

each with nine carries on the night. Land’s Davis had 41

yards in his UWG debut.

Jackson moves upJunior Devontae Jackson moved into 10th place among

all-time running backs at UWG and now has 1,641 rush-

ing yards in his three-year career thus far at UWG. The

place where he is making his mark on the record books

at West Georgia in the biggest way is as an All-Purpose

back. Jackson was named All-Gulf South Conference as

an all-purpose player in each of his first two seasons and

is just 143 yards away from becoming the seventh 3,000-

yard man in terms of all-purpose yards in school history.

Nick Price and Denarius Appling each had more than,

4,300 all-purpose yards in their careers, with Price edging

Appling in the overall numbers by a mere 18 yards.

Solid DistributionSophomore quarterback Willie Candler has a stable of re-

ceivers to throw to this season, and 13 different receivers

took to Ra-Lin Field at various times during the opener

against Fort Valley State. Candler and backup quarterback

Tyler Queen completed 20 passes on the night, with 11

different wideouts on the receiving end. Transfer Shaq

Roland was the most targeted receiver in the contest,

hauling in five passes for 30 yards.

Leading ReceiversWhile Roland led the way with five receptions against Fort

Valley State, two other receivers were tops in yards on

the night. Brooks Shannon and Thomas Lester each had

two catches in the opener, with Shannon going for a

team-high 64 yards. Lester had 62 yards, including 55 on

the second-longest play of the night.

In the Air TonightSophomore quarterback Willie Candler is close to his

first milestone as a quarterback, as he now has 930

career yards passing at UWG. He needs just 70 yards to

become the 16th quarterback in school history to throw

for 1,000 yards in a career.

Vaughan Watch 2017In the 2016 season, Marcus Sayles set the school record

for games started, as with the last game of the year, he

started his 45th career game at West Georgia. Senior

offensive lineman Harley Vaughan is on track to surpass

that record this season. The All-American started at left

tackle for all 14 games of his freshman year in 2014,

then moved to center in the following season and has

started every game of his career. His career start number

sits at 41 heading into the Miles games.

The David Dean era begins in 2016 after a solid run over the past three years. Just seven years ago, West Georgia went an entire season without a rushing touchdown, and in the past three years, the Wolves have produced a top-10 season in school history. In the 2016 season, the final game of the year gave West Georgia a lot of momentum on both sides of the ball heading into 2017. The Wolves had 52 carries for 336 yards and five rushing touchdowns in that contest, the eighth time in school history that UWG had five or more rushing touchdowns in a single game. In the 2014 run to the NCAA Semifinals, the Wolves put up more than 3,000 yards rushing for the first time in school history, shattering both the yards and touchdowns record by more than 700 and seven, respec-tively. The 2015 season was more of the same, with the Wolves eating up yardage to the tune of another school record of 5.1 yards per carry. Prior to Hall’s ten-ure, there had been no 1,000-yard backs in the previous 10 years, and the Wolves have had a back eclipse that number in each of the past three seasons. First, it was Seth Hinsley in the 2014 campaign, followed by Devontae Jackson in 2015. Last year, Lamarcus Franks became the 11th back in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, hitting for 1,009 yards as a senior.
