Head Coach David DeanIn late January the University of West Georgia was faced with the task of filling a vacancy as head football coach. The job wasn’t vacant very long. David Dean was available; ready, willing, and eager to become UWG’s 11th head football coach of the modern era. Dean brings a resume to the UWG post that rivals almost any coach in the nation, at any level. Dean is this season entering his 30th season in the coaching pro-fession, his ninth at West Georgia. There is one common thread to his 29 previous seasons: David Dean is a winner. The former wide receiver at Georgia Tech was a key staff member at Valdosta State from 1988-1991. He next spent eight seasons on the staff at UWG, an era that saw the program experience a large number of firsts. That includes the first winning season at the Division II level, the first NCAA D-II Playoff berth, and the program’s first two Gulf South Conference titles. Dean departed UWG following the 1999 season, joining the staff of Chris Hatcher at Valdosta Sate. He spent seven seasons as the Blazers’ offensive coordina-tor, a run that included the 2004 NCAA Division II Championship. In 2007 Dean ascended to the head coaching post at VSU. He had to assemble a coaching staff almost from the ground up as all but one fellow staff member moved on. The results were positive as Valdosta State posted a 13-1 and won the program’s second national championship. Five years later, Dean was back in the winner’s circle again. This time the Blazers lost twice in the regular season, but they were untouchable in the playoffs, averaging 42 points a game during a postseason run to a second national title. How rare is a second national championship? Consider that college foot-ball has been played in the state of Georgia since the 1890s. During that time only three football coaches in the state have won multiple national titles. Erskine Russell won three FCS title at Georgia Southern, while Paul Johnson followed him in States-boro with a pair of crowns of his own. The other coach on that very exclusive list is David Dean. Dean’s run as head coach at Valdosta State covered nine seasons. Beyond the two national crowns, his Blazer teams posted an impressive record of 79-27, including a mark of 42-19 in games played with the nation’s best Division II confer-ence, the Gulf South. His teams advanced to the NCAA Playoffs six times, and Dean’s postseason head coaching record is 12-4. The success of Dean’s Valdosta State program resulted in numerous indi-vidual plaudits. He captured American Football Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year honors following both national titles. He was also named 2007 Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, and GSC Coach of the Year in 2010. Beyond his individual success, Dean’s VSU players captured the highest of honors. His VSU teams had 18 Division II All-America selections, while 10 players signed National Football League contracts. Dean also coached three players who earned GSC Freshman of the Year honors, two league players of the year, and one national defensive player of the year. Clearly, David Dean has been linked to success throughout his 30-year coaching career. At UWG or at UWG’s biggest rival, the results are irrefutable: David Dean is a winner. His teams win and his program flourishes. As Dean begins his first season at UWG, he is following the most suc-cessful three-year run in the history of the Wolves’ program. Few coaches have the gravitas to continue, and even increase that level of success. Dean is a native of DeKalb County in the metro Atlanta area. He was born in Decatur, and enjoyed a stellar high school career for the Avondale Blue Devils. Dean arrived at Georgia Tech as a walk-on in 1982, but was awarded a scholarship the following season. He played wide receiver for the Jackets through the 1985 cam-paign. Married to the former Stacie Stott, the Deans have three daughters: Caro-line (20), Allison (18), and Natalie (12).

Wolves At A GlAnceWest Georgia is a team that is among the best in the nation in multiple offensive and defensive categories, but very few players are ranked nationally, especially n the defensive side of the ball. Sophomore quarterback Willie Candler continues to impress, leading the GSC in efficiency rating by a large margin, coming into Week 11 with a rating of 158.2 on the year. Running back Devontae Jackson is one of the top All-Purpose players in the nation, and is a 4,000-yard career man at UWG. He averages 140.9 All-Purpose yards on the year, which leads the Gulf South Conference by more than 28 yards. On the defensive side of the ball sophomore Chad Price is fourth in the GSC in sacks this season, and has 7.5 sacks thus far on the year. In overall tackles, Cam Magee leads the way for the Wolves with 74 stops, including 42 solo tackles this season and one interception.

trojAns At A GlAnceVirginia State is one of two teams from the CIAA that has been putting up Playsta-tion-type numbers on the year. The Trojans scored 59 touchdowns as a team this season, including 40 rushing scores. The engine that drives the touch-down train for Virginia State is running back Trenton Cannon, who is currently among the top-10 backs in Division II football, averaging more than 150 yards per game on the season. Quarterback Coredelral Cook also has 719 yards and 18 scores as a 1-2 punch for the Trojans, and Cook has 11 touchdowns with just three interceptions this year. Cook’s top two targets are Zach-ary Parker and Caleb Robinson, who have 28 and 27 receptions, respectively. Parker is a big-play threat, coming into the playoffs with 566 yards receiving compared to Robin-son’s 365 yards. The top defensive player is line-backer Brandon Lynch, who comes into the game with 72 tackles on the year.

The 9-2 Tigers will watch from home in the first round, receiving a bye as the top seed in the region for the 2017 season. A Gulf South Conference school has won the NCAA Division II Super Region 2, formerly the Southeast Region, crown 13 times in the last 15 seasons. Since Division II went to regionalization in 1990, a GSC school has advanced to the semifinals 19 times in 26 seasons. Delta State enters the 2017 playoffs as the fifth seed, entering the playoffs with an 8-3 record overall on the year. The Statesemen will have the longest trip of any team in the playoffs, traveling to Maryland to take on Bowie State in the first round. West Florida picked up the sixth seed with a 7-3 record, earning a playoff bid in just their second year of Division II football. The Argos will take on third-seeded South Atlantic Champion Wingate in the first round. West Georgia was the last team in for this year’s field, earning the seventh seed with an 8-3 record. The Top of the LeagueWith another stellar defensive performance this past week, the West Georgia Wolves continue to be the top defensive team in the Gulf South Conference and are among the best in the nation in 2017. The Wolves lead the GSC in scoring and total defense, and are second in rushing defense. In passing yards, allowed, West Geor-gia’s allowance of 139.8 is good for sixth in the nation, while the 280.3 total yards allowed this year is good for 13th nationally.

Less than 250Dominance could be one word used to describe the West Georgia defensive effort over the past three weeks, as the Wolves have allowed just 501 total yards in that span. When yards are difficult to come by, it makes getting a first down nearly impossible. Against Mississippi College three weeks ago, the Wolves allowed a meager three first downs in the contest that was shortened due to lightning. Against Florida Tech two weeks ago, the Wolves allowed just seven first downs to a high-powered FIT offensive impact. West Georgia’s defense this year has allowed 250 or less yards in five games this season.

Gardenhire Continues StrengthRedshirt freshman defensive end Deandre Gardenhire has started the first three games of the season, winning GSC Freshman of the Week in Week 1, and having a solid season thus far. He was instrumental in West Georgia building a 14-0 lead early in the game against North Alabama. The Camden County native had two sacks early in the game, and one of those also gave the freshman a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, setting

up the Wolves’ second touchdown of the day.

Pardue vs. MageeTwo hard-hitting defenders are in a race to see who will lead the Wolves this season in tackles, as junior safety Montrell Pardue and junior linebacker Cam Magee have been trading the team lead in tackles throughout the season. Against North Alabama, Magee was named GSC Defensive Player of the Week with 10 tackles and an interception, but has had his share of success as well and is currently leading the Wolves in tackles with 74. His best night was 14 tackles at Delta State and he has three tackles for a loss on the year.

Pick-6 Back-to-BackThe West Georgia secondary has been solid this season, allowing the sixth-least amount of yards per game in all of NCAA Division II football this season thus far. But in two of the past three weeks, the defense has chipped in offensively as well, as two dif-ferent players have gotten an intercption and returned it for a touchdown in the past two weeks. Senior Zed Brown had a 58-yard interception return for a touch-down against Shorter three weeks ago, the fourth of his career. That sets a new UWG record for intercep-tions returned for a touchdown in his career. Against Florida Tech, Jakyron Young moved to the top of the

Wolves’ interception numbers on the year, picking off his second pass of the season and returning it for a touchdown with 24 seconds left in the contest for the game-winning score .

UWG Defense in the NCAAWest Georgia is ranked in the top-15 in the nation in four different categories, led by the passing yards allowed of 148.5, which is good for 6th in the nation. The Wolves allow 15.6 points per game, which in 15th nationally, followed by 280.3 yards per game, which is 13th. UWG’s team passing efficiency on defense is also stellar at 100.64, good for 14th in Division II Football.

All-GSCDespite holding down one of the top defenses in the nation, just two performers were named All-Gulf South Conference by the coaches’ vote. Sophomore defensive end Chad Price earned Second Team All-GSC honors, closing the year with 35 tackles, in-cluding 10.5 tackles for a loss and 7.5 sacks. His sacks numbers were good for fourth in the conference this year. Junior Montrell Pardue was the other defensive All-GSC performer. Pardue is one of the most sure tacklers on the UWG defense and ended the regular season with 66 tackles, good for second on the squad. He had one interception, three pass breakups and four passes defended on the year.

Candler on the DoorstepJust a sophomore in 2017, quarterback Willie Candler is on the cusp of the most prolific individual season pass-ing in school history, as the Atlanta native is just 100 passing yards away from the school record. He currently has 2,548 yards through the air this year with 22 touch-down passes. Second place in yards is 2,644 from Chris Teal in 1992 and the record is 2,648, set by Toby Strange in 1996. Teal holds the passing touchdowns record with 25, while Strange and Jeremy Clements each had 24.

Jackson All-Purpose WatchJunior running back Devontae Jackson was named the Gulf South Conference Offensive Player of the Year earlier this week, and he currently leads the GSC by more than 28 yards per game in all-purpose yardage. He currently has 986 rushing yards, 151 passing yards and 373 kickoff return yards with eight total touchdowns on the year. Earlier this season, he became the sixth back in school history to reach 2,000 career rushing yards and he is the fourth 4,000-yard all-purpose back in the UWG record books. If he gets 14 more yards, he will become the third back in West Georgia history with two 1,000 yard seasons, and is now a three-time All-Gulf South Conference honoree. Of those three All-GSC awards, two have been First Team.

All-GSC On the LineIt is extremely difficult for a running back to be the Gulf South Conference Offensive Player of the Year without a steady offensive line, and the coaches’ vote for All-GSC linemen proves that. Harley Vaughan received his third All-Conference nod and he has now been named First Team All-GSC twice. Joining Vaughan on the All-GSC First Team was tackle Desmond Harrison. Guard/Tackle Quintin Stanford earned his second-straight All-GSC honor with this year’s announcement.

Wiggins Stays ConsistentWhile freshman kicker Trey Wiggins earned recognition as the GSC Freshman of the Week in the second week of the season, he has just recently begun to come into his

own as a kicker, as he continues to kick from longer dis-tance each week. Against North Alabama, the freshman from nearby Heard County nailed a 35-yard field goal, the longest of his career thus far. He is tied for 24th nationally in field goal percentage at .769 and is 10-for-13 on field goals this year. With extra points, he s 44-of-46 on the season and has had at least six PATs in four different games. . A Potent Return GameWest Georgia’s return game continues to move up in the national rankings, especially after Devontae Jackson’s 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the West Alabama game earlier this season. Jackson is averaging 26.6 yards per return on the year, good for 32nd in the nation, but the Wolves as a team average 25.0 yards per return, which is good for 14th in the nation. J.J. Jones is averaging 11.0 yards per return on punts as well, which is good for 31st in the nation.

Leading ReceiversTen different players have caught a touchdown pass from Willie Candler this season, led by senior Shaq Roland, who has five touchdown receptions. Deniko Carter is next in line with four and Emoni Williams has three. Every player who has double-digit receptions on the year is averaging at least 11.5 yards per catch on the year, and of those receivers, all can go from distance. Six of the eight top receivers have touchdowns of 40 yards or more.

Harley Vaughan RecordsThis year’s senior class on offense features a pair of offensive linemen as well as a quartet of receivers and a running back. Senior offensive lineman Harley Vaughan leads the group, as he stepped up to the top of the UWG record books against Valdosta State, as he started his 46th game his career at UWG. Vaughan was a redshirt freshman for West Georgia in the 2014 season and went to the semifinals twice, starting every game in-between. Saturday will mark his 52nd start at UWG.

The David Dean era begins in 2016 after a solid run over the past three years. Just seven years ago, West Georgia went an entire season without a rushing touchdown, and in the past three years, the Wolves have produced a top-10 season in school history. In the 2016 season, the final game of the year gave West Georgia a lot of momentum on both sides of the ball heading into 2017. The Wolves had 52 carries for 336 yards and five rushing touchdowns in that contest, the eighth time in school history that UWG had five or more rushing touchdowns in a single game. In the 2014 run to the NCAA Semifinals, the Wolves put up more than 3,000 yards rushing for the first time in school history, shattering both the yards and touchdowns record by more than 700 and seven, respec-tively. The 2015 season was more of the same, with the Wolves eating up yardage to the tune of another school record of 5.1 yards per carry. Prior to Hall’s ten-ure, there had been no 1,000-yard backs in the previous 10 years, and the Wolves have had a back eclipse that number in each of the past three seasons. First, it was Seth Hinsley in the 2014 campaign, followed by Devontae Jackson in 2015. Last year, Lamarcus Franks became the 11th back in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, hitting for 1,009 yards as a senior.
