Spring is finally here and it's time to play with old cars.

Hope everyone can make the Eufala trip this weekend with our sister Region Ga/Al. Charles Norris has a good route planned to make the trip not only easy for old cars but, more interesting as well. The Antebellum homes are fabulous in Eufala. Hope we have good turnout on Saturday April 26th for the tour to George Bugg's car collection in Athens. That would be Georgia not Greece. We'll meet up with members of the Golden City Cruisers in the WalMart parking lot in Vila Rica just south of I-20 at 7:00M. We'll have maps available there. George's Museum is not hard to find. Meeting this month will be at the American Pie restaurant on Maple Street at 6:30 PM, April 3rd. These folks were most hospitable to us last month. The big screen made Glenn's presentation of the history of the Corvette very entertaining. This month Frank Hummel will give a talk on Colonial Pipeline and how gas is refined. Frank will take us through crude oil all the way to the gas tank in our cars. Some sad news to report. Gary Moyses father passed away on March 26th. Gary's Dad was a real car guy. Gary comes by it honestly. Our thoughts and prayers are with Gary and Carol.

The Nichols and the Hornes drove their Model As to the Barber Vintage Motors Museum and Motor Sports facility in Leeds, Al. After visiting the Museum, which is now the largest motorcycle museum in the world according to the Guinness Book of World Records, we got on the track with our Model As. MODEL A FORD DAYracetrack. The Museum has 600 of it's 1200 motorcycle collection on display at any one time. George Barber wasn't content with just motorcycles and felt that Lotus cars needed a museum to foster the history of that marque. At least one example of most every Lotus race car and street car are represented in the Muse-um. We're ready to go back. Might be a good short tour for the West Georgia Region.

Birmingham, Alabama native George Barber modi-fied, raced and maintained Porsches in the 1960's (63 first-place wins). He started collecting and restoring classic sports cars in 1989, but his interest soon turned to motorcycles. Barber recognized that there was not a museum which reflected the history of motorcycles from a global perspective. He wanted to preserve motorcycle history in the United States in a way that represents an international aspect and to supply an example of motor-cycles that until then could only have been seen in books and magazines. This was the theme used in the mission and development of the Barber collection. The collection grew with the assistance of skilled restorers that worked for Barber at a secluded location in Birmingham that once housed a commercial vehicle refur-bishing facility. Out of the same shop a vintage motorcycle race team operated with the challenge of maintaining and racing historically significant machinery. These bikes were routinely campaigned around the United States and Europe so that they could be enjoyed and appreci-ated in their original setting, rather than collecting dust in a garage. This racing effort brought the Barber Team 7 National Championships in the American Historic Rac-ing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) and helped secure a credible place for the collection in the community of motorcycle enthusiasts. In 1994, the Barber collection became the Barber Vin-tage Motorsports Museum when it was granted a 501(c)3 not for profit status. Along the way vehicles from the museum’s collection have been featured in exhibits around the world. Twenty one motorcycles were selected for the famed Art of the Motorcycle exhibit at the Guggenheim’s New York and Bilbao, Spain location as well as the Field Museum in Chicago. England’s Goodwood Festival of Speed has featured cars from the Barber collection. Birmingham’s own Museum of Art has conducted a special exhibit featuring motorcycles from the Barber collection. The collection now has over 1200 vintage and modern motorcycles and as well as a substantial collection of Lotus and other racecars. There are approximately 600 of the collec-tion’s 1200 motorcycles on display at any given time. These bikes range from 1902 to current-year production. Bikes from 20 countries represent 200 different manufacturers. The com-mon street bike is represented, as well as rare, one-off Gran Prix race machinery. Bikes have been purchased from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden, but also as close as down the street.
