The thyroid gland is one of the largest endocrine glands in the body. The gland produces hormones which regulate our metabolic rate and determine factors such as body temperature energy levels and the body’s use of other hormones and vitamins. The thyroid gland is found in the neck just below the thyroid cartilage often called the Adam’s apple. Many conditions which affect the thyroid gland produce eye related problems. This is known as thyroid eye disease, or ‘TED’ but you may also come across other names relating to the condition (these include thyroid ophthalmopathy, thyroid associated ophthalmopathy, Grave’s eye disease and ‘Grave’s’ ophthalmopathy)

For simplicity, we’ll stick here to ‘TED’.

What are the symptoms of TED

TED affects the soft tissues and muscles that surround the eyes and increases the amount of fluid in these tissues pushing the eyeball forward in the eye socket.

The tissues around the eyes become puffy, swollen and inflamed. The eyes can redden, become dry, gritty and uncomfortable.

In severe cases the auto immune process causes swelling and stiffness of the muscles that move the eye. This can cause double vision, especially when you look from side to side, because the muscles cannot keep the eyes exactly in line with each other. Occasionally, the swelling behind the eyes starts to press on the nerve from the eyes to the brain and vision is reduced.

Treating TED

Like any disease, the first course of action is a thorough assessment. It is important to take action because in severe cases TED can be very debilitating and have a profound effect on your quality of life.

If the disease is mild, simple eyedrops may be effective in bringing relief to irritated or red eyes. Unsightly puffiness around the eyes, although not in itself dangerous is usually treated conservatively. Surgery may also be an option to address a bulging look to the eyes.

Problems with double vision may be alleviated by either plastic prism lenses added to normal glasses; or a realignment of the eyes at a much later stage. However, if your vision is generally deteriorating, and cannot be corrected by prescription glasses, urgent specialist attention is needed as it may be a sign of pressure on the nerve behind your eyes.

The eye clinic at BMI The Somerfield Hospital offers a range of treatments for Thyroid Eye Disease.

MOTORSPORT legend and Edenbridge resident John Surtees has helped launch a life-saving service, thanks to a £25,000 donation.

“Doctors and the paramedic team at Kent Air Ambulance are now able to carry out blood transfusions at the scene of emergencies, making it one of the first air ambulance services to do this outside of London” Mr Surtees presented the cheque to charity chief executive Adrian Bell at its Marden base.

The money will cover the cost of the blood transfusion equipment on board the helicopter, as well as two Honda CRV cars for the transportation of blood in all weathers, once again bringing together the name of John Surtees and Honda, who he drove for in the late 60s.

Mr Surtees said: "A large part of my life has been spent on the racing tracks of the world trying to save time. I am very grateful to all of those who have helped the Henry Surtees Foundation provide the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance with blood transfusion equipment and the Honda vehicles to transport the blood. The speedy delivery of this new service to the scene of an emergency will help save lives and injury."

It was made possible by a charity partnership of air ambulance, the Henry Surtees Foundation, set up after Mr Surtees' son died in a car crash, SERV, East Surrey and William Harvey Hospitals and NHS Blood and Transplant.

The Kent Music Summer School, held each July, offers a range of residential courses at Benenden School, set in 240 acres of Kent countryside near Cranbrook. There are no auditions and anyone can apply. Children are placed in consultation with their music teacher, taking account of their experience and ability.

Phill Hyde, who manages the summer school, said: “The Kent Summer School lets young people develop their musical skills in an atmosphere of encouragement, expertise and enjoyment with many forging lasting friendships. It is very popular and we need to ensure instrumental and choral balance so is important to register your interest as soon as possible to make sure you can attend the course you want.”

More than 1,000 young people enjoy the purpose-built facilities, playing in wind bands, symphony orchestras, string orchestras and recorder groups.

The summer school has been running for more than 60 years and tutors are professional musicians and teachers of the highest quality, including members of major London orchestras.

For more information, visit www.kent-music.com, or contact Valerie Cordina, summer school administrator, on 01622 358402 / email: [email protected].

Musicians from across Kent are rushing to reserve their places at the popular Kent Music Summer School, which offers young people from 8 to 19 the opportunity to improve their skills and make new friends in a harmonious, creative environment.

Visitors Deliver

Big Vote of Confidence in KentNinety-five per cent of visitors to the county this summer rated their holiday or day trip as excellent or good, according to the latest research undertaken by Visit Kent.

Ninety per cent of visitors said they are likely to return to the county while 88 per cent are likely to recommend Kent to others. Ninety per cent of visitors were impressed by the cleanliness of the county and 87 per cent were positive about the welcome they had received.

And the five top reasons for people coming to Kent this summer were the county’s history and heritage (44 per cent), the countryside (28 per cent), the coast (26 per cent), catching up with friends and relatives (24 per cent) and visitor attractions (22 per cent).

The tourism champions at Visit Kent worked with Qa Research to collate and analyse information gathered through an online survey and face-to-face interviews across Kent.

Sandra Matthews-Marsh, chief executive for Visit Kent, said: “This detailed research shows just how well our tourism providers are doing in making Kent the most welcoming county in England and consistently delivering a really high-quality visitor experience.

She went on to say; “Tourism delivers more than £3.2 billion to the Kent economy year or year supporting more than 3,000 businesses. It is an industry that is perfectly placed to drive our economy forward with enthusiastic and creative entrepreneurs eager to take their ideas to market and create good career-style jobs for our young people.”

With annual “no smoking day” falling on March 13 we thought any new or prospective “non smokers” might appreciate a look at what has recently been voted the “Best E-Cigarette” by www.gizomdo.co.uk.

The VV portion of the name stands for ‘variable voltage’, which you can change up and down with buttons at the bottom of the device. A handy LCD screen shows your voltage setting and a puff counter displays how many drags you’ve taken. Varying the voltage changes the amount of taste, strength and vapour you get with your liquid — allowing users to find a sweet spot that suits them.

Design-wise, it’s quite an attractive product; the device has squared edges and comes in a pleasing black metal finish.

A BRIEF HISTORY It is not hard to see that Royal Tunbridge Wells is overflowing with years of history. Once a place of recreation for royalty and aristocracy, the town came into being as a spa during the Georgian age and owes its very existence to the discovery of the Chalybeate Spring in 1606 by Dudley, Lord North. Lord North was convinced of the iron-rich healing properties of the waters and proclaimed so to the wealthy London upper classes that flocked to try it. By the time Queen Henrietta Maria (wife of King Charles I) visited in 1630 it had established itself as a spa retreat. Until 1676 little permanent building took place and visitors were obliged either to camp on the downs or to find lodgings at Southborough. In 1684 the church of King Charles the Martyr was built and the town began to develop around it. However, it was in 1735 when the celebrated dandy Richard (Beau) Nash appointed himself Master

of Ceremonies, that Royal Tunbridge Wells really entered its height of popularity as a tourist resort.

It is quite amazing to think that this entire town owes its existence to a chance encounter with a member of aristocracy. During the Summer, visitors to the town can still taste the Spring water and follow in the footsteps of Queen Victoria, Queen Anne and Daniel Defoe. You’ll have to join the queue behind me!

The Spring is situated in the Pantiles and is open daily from Easter to September 10am to 5pm (Monday - Saturday) and 11am to 4pm (Sundays & Bank Holidays)

You may ask then ‘where does the ‘Royal’ come from? The prefix actually dates to 1909, when King Edward VII granted the town its official title to celebrate its popularity over the years amongst members of the royal family.

Royal Tunbridge Wells is one of only three towns in England to have been granted this status. The others being Royal Leamington Spa and Royal Wootton Bassett, which became a Royal town in 2011.

PLACES TO VISIT Naturally those who visit do not spend the entire time drinking from the spa. In addition to ‘taking the waters’ during the summer months, Tunbridge Wells offers a plethora of attractions all year round. If you love a good walk as I do, try a one-hour guided walk around the town. With a guide at your side you won’t be able to miss any part of the town’s 400-year history.

Guided tours take place every Thursday and Saturday (March to December) at 11:30am Tickets are £4 and are available from the Royal Tunbridge Wells Tourist Information Centre

While quietly strolling through the elegant architecture of The Pantiles and visiting one of the many independent shops, it is hard to believe that this peaceful town is only 40 miles from the busy streets of central London. As a huge baking enthusiast I have rather dangerously found myself in the middle of the ‘Aladdin’s cave’ of cooking shops about to spend a fortune on biscuit cutters. A brief glance up and I notice the beautiful architecture of one of the buildings outside. What a fabulous place to start off in for the first issue of West Kent Lifestyle. Biscuit cutters (and a new non-stick rolling pin) in the bag and I want to learn more..

Another delight for the keen walker, or those who fancy a stroll, are the large green spaces Tunbridge Wells and the surrounding areas have to offer. Situated close to the centre of town, the substantial 250 acres of woodland and heathland of Tunbridge Wells and Rusthall Commons offer open areas for picnics and a maintained cricket ground next to Wellington Rocks. So pick up a guidebook and get walking!

For those of you able to travel a little way from the centre of town, Scotney Castle in Lamberhurst is run by the National Trust and set in 770 acres of beautiful estate. Open all year round this is a must see for anyone visiting the area.

For ticket prices and more information visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/scotney-castle

For a great day out with the children try The Spa Valley Railway for steam and heritage trains between Eridge, Groombridge, High Rocks and

Tunbridge Wells. Board a train at Tunbridge Wells West Station, the headquarters of the Railway. The 1886-built engine shed is a unique survivor from the age of steam and the only active one of its type in the South of England. There is a collection of historic locomotives and carriages receiving maintenance or repairs on show as well as a retired express train buffet car from the 1960s.

For ticket prices and more information visit www.spavalleyrailway.co.uk

MUSIC AND ARTS The town’s largest theatre is the Assembly Hall in Crescent Road which can hold just over 1,000 people and was opening in 1939. Since 1967, the Assembly Hall has been home to the Tunbridge Wells Operatic and Dramatic Society whose first performance was Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Gondoliers. During the Second World War, the theatre was used for dances for troops,

film shows and events to raise money for the war effort. By 2001, the theatre was attracting audiences of over 150,000 each year.

The theatre was fully refurbished in 2001 and now plays host to a range of comedy, musical theatre, dance and more.

For those of you looking for something a little more by way of music Tunbridge Wells presents The Forum. The Forum opened as a 250-capacity live music venue in January 1993 in a building on Tunbridge Wells Common which was previously used as a public toilet and a brass rubbing centre. In 2010, The Forum and one of its founders Jason Dormon were featured in The Independent's "Happy List", profiling people who make Britain a better place to live. In 2012, the NME voted the venue as Britain's Best Small Venue. Notable acts who have appeared at The Forum include; Adele, Coldplay, Green Day, Mumford & Sons, Muse and Oasis.

So what are you waiting for? From an iron-rich

spring to cure all ailments to beautiful greens and gardens Tunbridge Wells really does have something for everyone

to enjoy. And if you love cooking try Trevor Mottram, you’ll be in there for hours!

Head north towards Cliffe, one of three villages you pass through perched on the edge of the north Kent marshes. At this point, the landscape changes sharply from gently rolling arable farmland and fruit to low, flat meadows, crisscrossed by ditches, all the way down to the Thames.

St Helen’s in Cliffe is one of the largest parish churches in Kent, revealing the village’s long-time-past importance as a port on the Thames. The striking building, made from layers of pale Kent ragstone alternating with shiny black flint, was constructed sometime c1260.

The peaceful churchyard is a perfect place to enjoy the view down towards the Thames sea wall, and the impression (at

high tide) that the ships are floating on the land.

If wildlife watching is your passion, take a detour to RSPB Cliffe Pools to see the migrating birds that stop there in autumn to feed.

The next village is Cooling where you pass the picturesque Cooling Castle gatehouse with its spectacular twin turrets. The castle is privately owned by Jools Holland the musician but the neighbouring barns can be hired for events.

In the nearby churchyard a row of small, lozenge-shaped gravestones, known today as ‘Pip's graves’ is said to have given Dickens inspiration for the opening chapter of Great Expectations.

The marshes were very different in Dickens’s day when malaria was common in the area. The farmer Henry Pye drained the land at the end of the 19th century, eliminating the fever and improving the grazing.

Onwards towards High Halstow! But don’t miss Northward Hill where the RSPB manages the land and a habitat for wading birds. There’s a big heronry too, where grey herons and little egrets breed (which gave this route its name) and beautiful woods. The view east across the Thames Estuary towards Essex is stunning.

From High Halstow, you head south over the backbone of the Hoo peninsular towards the River Medway. The route takes you to the shore of the river at Upper Upnor with its pretty street of weather boarded cottages leading to the castle. Built in the sixteenth century, Upnor Castle defended the Tudor dockyard and warships. After a daring raid by the Dutch in 1667 on the Stuart naval base, when they captured the flagship HMS Royal Charles and towed it back to Holland, the castle was used as a store and a programme of fort building began to properly defend Chatham Dockyard.

Worth visiting Bikes may not use the Medway Tunnel, so you must cross Rochester Bridge unless you decide to visit these attractions by car or train. You can, however, cycle along Rochester’s Victorian High Street on the way (pedestrians only at weekends).

The Historic Dockyard at Chatham lies on the opposite bank of the river, slightly upstream from Upnor. The nearby Fort Amhurst and the Royal Engineers Regimental Museum are both in walking distance of the dockyard.

Cyclists are welcome in Riverside Country Park, one of many Sites of Scientific Interest along the North Kent coast, covering 100 hectares beside the Medway estuary. It is a popular park for cyclists, birders and people enjoying the views across the river towards the Hoo Peninsular.

Nature notes: Cliffe Pools nature reserve landscape of glittering water and wide skies is one of the most important places for wildlife in the UK. Swirling flocks waterfowl and wading birds can be watched from the nature trails.

During the spring and autumn migrations you might see sandpipers and stints; flocks of ducks and grebes; hen harriers and other birds of prey.

At weekends RSPB staff and volunteers are around to tell you more and point out the trails around the pools or on towards the Thames.

Over 250 skilled crafts people from all over the UK will bring you the very best in handmade gifts and treats. With unusual wares you wouldn’t often find on the high street, there's something for everyone from ceramics and glass to jewellery and paintings.

To celebrate their 60th birthday, Chilstone of Tunbridge Wells have teamed up with How Green Nursery and will be returning to the Weald of Kent with ‘The Chilstone Diamond Anniversary Garden’. This stunning diamond shaped show garden will feature a fountain with the illusion of tiny dripping diamonds.

How Green Nursery will bring the show stopping garden alive with a complementary selection of vibrant plant and flowers.

Brand new to this year’s show, Andrew Sinclair from The Sculpture School will be at the show ready to inspire, intrigue and fascinate audiences with his Sculpture Demonstrations. With a nod to classical sculpture Andrew will demonstrate traditional skills and techniques while highlighting the modern creativity and humour that can be brought alive.

Leaving the train station behind you, head into the centre of Snodland, with its mix of buildings, some more than a hundred years old.

Water is the key to Snodland's beginnings. Drinking water was provided by two streams at either end of the village. The River Medway was a natural barrier that could be crossed by a ford and ferry linking Snodland to Burham, and the waterway was long used to transport goods and people, and encourage contact and communication with other settlements within a wide area.

The Medway valley itself has been inhabited since prehistoric times and Snodland is surrounded by a great deal of evidence of early settlements. Most striking of these are the Neolithic burial chambers of Kit's Coty and the Countless Stones over the river at Aylesford, and the Coldrum Stones by the Pilgrim's

Way nearby at Trottiscliffe. Occupying an archaeological site now owned by the National Trust, the Stones - actually a long barrow - are an impressive sight - four large monoliths standing in a half-circle with a raised tomb on one side. In August 1912, men working in the neighbouring parish of Halling found the skeleton of a man that apparently dates from around 2,000 BC.

The name Snodland probably derives from a person called Snod. The earliest charter, dated 838, gives Snoddingland to the Bishop of Rochester, but experts now believe this is a forgery, made around 975, by the monks at Rochester as part of a dispute with the Saxon family who had owned the parish until then.

Until the 19th century, village life in Snodland revolved around agriculture. Then, quite suddenly, the local land became worth more for manufacture, and it wasn’t long before the Medway villages,

including Snodland, became centres of the new cement, brick and paper-making industries. Ancient farmsteads and acres of fields disappeared under lime kilns, chalk quarries and factories, whose tall, smoke-belching chimneys dominated the landscape.

If you head towards Birling, you’ll leave behind the built-up area of Snodland, and almost immediately notice the transition from urban to rural life.

For a time, the route runs together with the North Downs Way - a National Trail that travels along high ground from Farnham in Surrey to Dover in east Kent. Much of the trail follows the most famous of the many Pilgrims Ways, the 120-mile path that in from medieval times linked the cathedral city of Winchester with its shrine to St Swithun, to Canterbury, where pilgrims could pray at the shrine of St Thomas Becket in the crypt of England’s greatest Norman cathedral.

Mix hidden history with breathtaking views over the Kent Downs on this walk through the heart of the beautiful Medway Valley. You will stroll through peaceful farmland and discover worked-out chalk quarries as the landscape transforms seamlessly from an urban to a rural environment. Tunbridge Wells.

Circular walk - 7.1 miles (11.4km)

The route of the North Downs Way passes close to the most densely-populated areas in England. Nevertheless it is possible to walk for hours along sections of the picturesque North Downs Way without seeing another soul, allowing time to simply reflect on the history of the ancient track way.

The walk follows the route as it travels uphill until it reaches the ridge of the downs. It’s well worth taking the time to pause at the top to admire the wonderful views over Snodland, the Medway Valley and the rolling hills beyond. The Kent Downs cover almost a quarter of the county. They stretch from the White Cliffs in the east at Dover, to the Surrey and London borders in the west. The chalk downs provide a diverse landscape, with their dramatic, steep-sided escarpments, broad secluded valleys, network of narrow lanes, distinctive villages crossed by drover and peddler paths, set among a patchwork of ancient woodlands, traditional orchards, fields and hedgerows that provide the ideal habitat for a wealth of wildlife, alongside sites of historic and cultural interest. All these make up a particular type of countryside that was considered so special

and valuable an asset nationally, that it was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1968.

Walkers wanting to experience more of this lovely part of the county can set foot along an additional loop that takes them along the high ground around Ladd’s Farm, passing though rare beech-yew woodland that is found only where the top of the downs is exposed to the underlying chalk layer.

As you return to the village, you’ll come across the Bull public house in Holborough Road, perfectly placed beside the route for a well-deserved refreshment stop.

Interesting places to visit on the walk around Snodland include the Historical Society Museum in Waghorn Road, open Wednesdays and Sundays, 2pm - 5pm, free entry.

For visitors still keen to enjoy the great outdoors, Ranscombe Farm, at Cuxton, near Snodland, is Plantlife's largest nature reserve in England, occupying 560 acres on the slopes of the North Downs in Kent. Recently declared a country park, the reserve provides opportunities for

quiet walks among attractive countryside with a fascinating flora. A large part of the site is within the Cobham Woods Site of Special Scientific Interest, and the whole farm lies in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Grid References: TQ 718 675 (car park) TQ 705 680 (middle of reserve).

Walkers wanting to swap tired legs for wheels can have a bucketful of fun at Diggerland, based in Strood’s Medway Valley Leisure Park, where children of all ages can enjoy a great day out riding in and driving real diggers, tractors and other exciting earth-moving machines.

ChilstoneCelebrating their diamond anniversary this

year, “Chilstone Garden Ornaments” was founded by the late Michael Dibben in 1953 at Great Linford Manor in Buckinghamshire

before first moving to Kent in 1976. For 20 years the company operated from Sprivers, a

beautiful National Trust property but since 1996 the entire operation (following the

consolidation of the manufacturing workshop and show gardens to one location) Chilstone’s

home has been at Langton Green, near Tunbridge Wells.

ChilstoneChilstone’s offering is unique, fascinating and one whose business, it is quite obvious to see, is lived and breathed by those who work at the beautiful show gardens. The work on display is all hand crafted – and in a world of homogenised production, it is fabulous to see a business which is so dependent on the skill, love and dedication of the individual. A bespoke service is offered from a wealth of dedicated, experienced craftsmen.

Chilstone’s stone products cater for both the traditional garden ornaments and also for more contemporary architectural design on both a small and grand scale. For me however, it is the magic of the garden ornaments that really capture the imagination.

Many of us will have garden ornaments, often picked up at a local garden centre – they add a little distinction and character to an outside space, of that there’s no doubt. However, don’t you always find that if you come across such ornaments or statues in perhaps a public park or gardens, or in that of a stately or historical home that they seem to just belong that little bit more? That somehow, by the virtue of having been there so long that they become almost like a living, breathing part of the landscape? This is what Chilstone products can replicate in stunning fashion.

Each Chilstone ornament is made in reconstituted stone by a special process developed over many years to ensure a finished texture virtually indistinguishable from natural stone but the real magic is that the

formula’s composition encourages the spontaneous growth of mosses and lichens, which rapidly give the ornament the antiquated appearance of an original. Other tips and tricks to weather the ornaments are also on offer from those at Chilstone – although getting your hands on their unique formula is like getting your hands on the Colonel’s special blend of 11 herbs and spices – it’s not going to happen!

Since Chilstone was bought by an entrepreneur in 2007, significant investment in the show gardens and moulds in particular has breathed a new lease of life into the business. The show gardens in particular offer the prospective customer a fantastic natural environment in which to view and enjoy some of their best ornaments. Set in 35 acres of woodland it is not unheard of in the least for families to come to Chilstone to take in the stunning views, lakeside walks and take a picnic to enjoy in the idyllic and tranquil environment. On display throughout the gardens are working fountains, temples, benches, urns, pedestals, and all manner of other handmade stone works and ornaments from the workshop. There is also a sculpture walk, which in addition to the many original Chilstone ornaments, are displayed exclusive works from many independent sculptors. This is a genuine free day out in the glorious Kent countryside open seven days a week, including bank holidays!

The architectural stone side of the business is also flourishing. Although my personal interest may be in the

ornaments there is no doubting the quality and appeal of many of their larger scale architectural works. Six figure commissions are not uncommon and the stone made at Chilstone is exported around the world – not only is the finished product virtually indistinguishable from quarried stone, but as it is entirely hand made a customer can request highly bespoke pieces on a small or grand scale.

From large scale columns and balustrading, pool surrounds, bollards and temples to porticos, examples of Chilstone’s architectural work are equally as beautiful as their ornamental collection.

As well as at the show gardens, one can see Chilstone’s works on display at many places of interest including Kensington and Kew Gardens, Hever Castle, The Pantiles, Longleat Estate and as far afield as the Barakura Gardens in Tokyo (the first authentic English garden in Japan).

Chilstone also has a long standing affiliation to the prestigious events such as the Hampton Court Flower Show and the world renowned Chelsea Flower Show. This being the centenary year of the CFS you can expect something extra special from Chilstone, although news of this year’s involvement will not be made public for a couple of months yet.

As the weather brightens up and spring is in the air why not find the time to visit Chilstone yourself? With a series of events planned for the summer months, be sure to check out their website for details before visiting.

Back in December I mentioned our unique 25 year guarantee and some of the lengths we go to that set us apart from the crowd. Well further to this is the news that we’ve published the Definitive Guide to Quality Timber Treatment. This is in response to some misleading reports in the farming press, that instead of making the subject of timber treatment clearer, has actually lead to even more confusion.

So, to cut through all the myths and hype about this complicated subject Jacksons has published this helpful, no-nonsense guide to the dos and don’ts of timber treatment. I know it may not be world changing news

for everyone, but if you are a farmer, a professional in the landscaping industry, or a householder that wants to know how and why we can guarantee our timber for 25 years, the answers are all there. It’s not a sales tool though, the booklet covers: vital information on timber types, timber physiology, species

suitable and not suitable for treating, kiln drying, pressure treatment, chemical loading, traceability and responsible sourcing. Handy bedtime reading for those who want to know more! You can download a PDF of the guide from the web site.

your kitchen Recycled Glass Black Worktop Is The New Star Granite Transformations markets high quality, durable worktops direct to consumers, through a network of showrooms, and their slim-line materials can be installed straight over existing kitchen work surfaces, enabling home owners to refresh dated looks and keep abreast of modern décor – an ingenious solution to those who want to renovate without the hassle that renovation can inevitably lead to.

In the kitchen, Black Star is the new black for worktops, according to Granite Transformations. Although earthen tones seemed to be gaining in popularity last year, black worktops have had a strong renaissance, with recycled glass worktop

“Black Star” now clocking up 23% of all Granite Transformations’ sales. What’s more, black worktops in general represent 54% of installations, its granite finishes Nero Stella and Nero Galaxy also proving particularly popular.

“One of the reasons that Black Star is in demand is that it contains fragments of mirror fleck, which creates an incredible sparkling effect under halogen lighting,” says Granite Transformations’ UK chief, Danny Hanlon. “It’s a diamond-polished surface featuring exceptionally deep hues of blue and black, which goes with any kitchen, rustic or modern, and with any colour of cabinet. A black worktop is timeless and gives the kitchen a

sophisticated yet inviting look that most home owners adore.”

As well as the ever popular worktops Granite Transformations also supply and fit replacement cabinet doors and drawer fronts, noting current consumer tastes for simple, muted shades. High gloss acrylic surfaced doors in cream and white are especially popular, as are simple Shaker styles in alabaster, pear and light oak woodgrains and flat matt finishes in white and zinc. Black and black-veined worktops complement all these door colours, creating a fashionable minimalist look, and even go with high gloss ‘hot’ colours like plum, red and paprika.

your kitchen Granite Transformations’ parent company, the Italian-based Trend Group, produces over a million linear metres of worktop materials each year, in granite, quartz and recycled glass finishes, and each of its three international markets has its own preferred palette. Americans lean toward brown and earthen tones, Australians favour white and cream, while in the UK over half of worktops currently installed are black.

“Australians would be happy with ten or eleven colours, while in this country we like to see a choice of 50 or 60, but mainly plump for variations on black,” says Danny. “Americans want to see 80 colours. They’ll still buy the same five, but they want to see 80.”

One other underlying kitchen worktop trend is the increasing use of recycled raw materials. Granite Transformations pioneered the use of post-consumer recycled glass worktop, made from used beer, wine and mineral water bottles and glass containers, and sources material from colour-sorted kerbside refuse collections. The #1 finish Black Star may look and perform like a black granite slab, but on closer inspection it is made up from irregular fragments of glass, even flecks of broken mirror, bonded together with a touch of polyester resin to give superior strength and outstanding resistance to heat, scratches, cuts, stains, impact and chemicals.

“People may say they like black granite, but it’s quite a difficult material to work with, needs regular sealing and maintenance, and the natural slab is extremely heavy, so you need to rip out the existing worktops and reinforce the cabinet carcases,” says Danny.

25

[homes & gardens]

“So when they see our Black Star and Nero Corallo glass worktops or our granite-based finishes Nero Stella, Nero Galaxy and Nero Marquis and realise they’ll fit right on top of the existing work surfaces,” he continues, “people like those even more. If it means home owners can have a new look kitchen without demolition, dust, debris and having to camp out in the dining room for several weeks, it’s a bit of a no-brainer really.”

Black Star and the full range of kitchen worktops, cabinet doors and mosaic splashbacks can be seen at the Granite Transformations’ showroom at; Newnham Court Shopping Village, Bearsted Road, Maidstone ME14 5LH

RINSER TOOTHBRUSHScott Amron revealed his “rinser toothbrush” last year with at a retail price of $22. The design cleverly does away with the need to rinse using a cup or glass after brushing your teeth with a specially designed groove in the handle directing water from the tap into a “drinking fountain” style jet with which you can rinse after brushing.

Ok, so this one may just be pushing it a little! For the ultimate lazy boy (or girl) this £4,000 toilet with its adjustable heated seat and foot warmer has a motion controlled lid which automatically opens as you approach and closes when you leave, as well as flushing for you. You can customise the seat position, water temperature and pressure, ambient lighting and audio (yes, audio with a music system, rear speaker, FM radio and an MP3 jack), through a removable hand held touch screen remote.

It’s certainly a pretty looking lavvy with a few tricks up its sleeve but some might say that shelling out £4k on a lavatory is just flushing money down the toilet! www.kohler.com/numi/

THE SMART TAPNow, here’s something a bit different. A tap that identifies you using facial screening, then pours water at a preset pressure and temperature catered to your preferences.

The integrated touch screen on top also shows a glimpse of your e-mail and calendar, along with the outside temperature, while built-in LEDs illuminate the pouring water in colours matching the water temperature.

The email and calendar function may be handy when you’re brushing your teeth in the morning but I’m struggling with the assumption that I want my water to be set at the same temperature and pressure for brushing my teeth as washing my face? www.ihouse.com

HOME WORKSWords by Tony King of Papillon Interiors, Margate

From home studies to garden studios, more and more people are setting aside a room as a home working area or family study space. British Telecom, one of the first employers to support home-working, has reported it had 65,000 flexible workers in 2012 - at least 10,000 of whom work from home. Clearly no one wants to recreate David Brent’s (The) Office in their front room so a little style, design and imagination will go a long way when setting up a work from hom /study area..

SPACE CONSCIOUSIf you are pushed for space and need to encapsulate your home office into the tiniest of nooks there are still design led and innovative products to choose from. Winner of the Interior Innovation award 2012, the Flatmate at Papillon Interiors is the ideal modern work space

CLASSIC CONTEMPORARYThink of ‘Mad Men’ New York styling and we tend to look towards everyone's favourite American designers; Charles and Ray Eames. Their timeless chair ranges set alongside the George Nelson desks will work in both modern and more traditional home spaces.

MODERN STYLINGSleek lines matched with modern durable materials make for clean defined work areas. There is no excuse for the lack of function or style in your scheme.

A Day at DukesBy Peter NicholsJust before Christmas last year, myself and my family had the pleasure of being invited to spend some time at the rather fabulous Dukes Hotel in Mayfair, London to sample a taste of the good life and enjoy their special "Mini Dukes and Duchesses" package.

One of the capital's best five star boutique hotels, the 90 roomed Dukes Hotel sits just a hop, skip and a jump from the bustling West End of London, minutes from the bright lights of Piccadilly, Regent Street, Soho and Shaftesbury Avenue and yet, tucked away in the discreet cul-de-sac of Saint James's Place, one's privacy and tranquillity are assured.

The Mini Dukes and Duchesses offer, currently available at Dukes has been created especially for couples with young children and provides a fantastic and luxurious break for both kids and parents alike. As well as the complimentary afternoon tea for all (including delightful finger sandwiches, a tray full of gorgeous fresh cream cakes, Belgian chocolate milk for the kids and tea & coffee for the adults) the kids are given the opportunity to dress up as a Duke or Duchess and be waited on hand and foot by a kids concierge. With two young children ourselves (ages 7 and 2) we took full advantage of the offer which also includes a free room for the children, each of whom are given a fee cuddly toy, with kids slippers, kids TV channels and a PlayStation with the latest games. Afternoon tea was served in the delightful conservatory just off the drawing room which leads to a charming private courtyard which was the perfect anti-dote to the hustle and Christmas bustle we encountered on our way through London.

The kids room was separated from our own luxury en suite room by our own private corridor with a separate front door and gave us a little bit of freedom while

the kids lapped up the independence of their own private (and actually bigger than ours!) room.

Having stayed in a few five star hotels in my time I can say hand on heart that the service at Dukes Hotel really is second to none. Aside from the obligatory and expected concierge and porter duties one would expect from such an establishment you really felt that the staff wanted to go out of their way to ensure your stay was as comfortable and enjoyable as possible - with assistance offered at every turn. It came as no surprise when I noticed a certificate in the lobby informing me that in 2012 Dukes Hotel took home the World's Ultimate Service Award in Hospitality at the World Travel Awards as well as the accolade of ‘World’s Leading Classic Hotel’.

Staying, as we did, just before Christmas we enjoyed a walk up to Hamley's where the children positively drooled over the latest Lego and Peppa Pig paraphernalia before heading into Chinatown for some wonderful authentic oriental cuisine.

Although a babysitting service was available, we opted to spend the evening relaxing in our well catered room, having had a selection of the afternoon’s cream cakes brought up to the room and chilled in the fridge and enjoyed a deep relaxing bath each in the opulent en suite bathroom. Meanwhile the children played games and pretty much entertained themselves, feeling quite the mini duke and duchess as they insisted upon wearing their complimentary ceremonial duds for the evening.

As we spent a little longer out on the town than anticipated I unfortunately missed out on using the superb steam room which closes at 8pm, but the gym is open 24 hours for those who wish to take advantage of the health club.

Breakfast is also included in the deal, served in Dukes award winning restaurant "Thirty Six" and once again service was faultless, with an army of highly trained staff appearing the instant you require them offering prompt service of a varied, delicious and wholesome menu.

At £468 for the experience this is perhaps not the sort of night out which your purse strings will stretch to very often - but given the standard price of a room at Dukes can set you back this amount on its own - the fact that you are getting two rooms, afternoon tea, breakfast for four and all the added extras and wonderful touches to make this a truly memorable stay I would say that for a family of four this is a treat you will certainly not regret forking out for.

Belfast

It may have been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons but Belfast is doing a lot of things just right, as Jaillan Yehia discovered on a visit to the Northern Irish Capital.

The day before I flew to Belfast, the city was in the headlines for the first time in years due to protests over the issue of flying the Union flag above City Hall. Despite this I pressed on with my trip and was glad I did, finding the people of Belfast welcoming and the atmosphere friendly.

Having grown up hearing of The Troubles, the Black Taxi Tour - where real Belfastians drive you round politically sensitive areas of their city including the murals and peace walls - was always going to be a great way to confront the issue head on by seeing the flash points in the infamous Shankill and Falls Road first-hand, and the timing made the tour extra pertinent and enlightening.

While in the city I also saw the more modern face of Belfast, the Titanic exhibition. This £97million visitor centre brings to life the ship that was built in Belfast’s docks; the interactive experience lets you virtually ascend the decks using Avatar-style 3d technology, float over the wreck as it sits on the seabed, and ride a cable car through the ship-building process with which the city is so proud to be associated - after all it was human error which proved the downfall of the Titanic as we learn that

staff on iceberg watch were too busy sending telegrams earning them money from rich passengers to heed the 80 incoming iceberg warnings.

As an antidote to all that history, politics and culture find some light relief in the form of Belfast’s shops. Without the crowds or the long distances to cover between retail therapy stops which characterise most European cities, Belfast delights with some less recognisable high street names such as Dunnes Stores and a sprinkling of speciality Irish shops from which to pick up woollen knits, souvenirs and gifts.

The best place for dedicated shoppers is Victoria Square where you can also get a great view of the city's rooftops from the Dome’s glass-encased viewing point which doesn't cost a penny.

High tea in the warm embrace of Belfast’s grand dame of hotels, The Merchant may set you back a few pennies but is well worth every one of them. Housed in a grand Victorian former bank, its plush yet cosy surroundings are a great place to enjoy some real decadence. Traditional tea is served in the newly gilded Great Room, which could give The Ritz a run for its money.

A pocket-sized city such as Belfast is best discovered on foot and you can tailor-make a walking tour with tourist guide Dee Morgan, who'll show you the traditional bars on your travels. Being led down the charming lanes is the perfect way to orient yourself and you can build on this newfound knowledge with your own self-guided walk later – if you can resist the temptation to walk straight back into the welcoming folds of Belfast’s favourite pub The Duke Of York for something Ireland always gets right and on which the whole world can agree – a pint of Guinness.

Where To Stay: For a real sense of history it has to be The Europa Hotel. Always home to journalists covering The Troubles and subsequently to dignitaries such as Bill Clinton and stars such as Brad Pitt, The Europa had the dubious distinction of being the most bombed hotel in Europe, suffering 33 attacks. It’s now refurbished as a plush modern 4 star hotel right in the city centre.

Born in Sydney, Australia, Jackman 44, made his name in various Hollywood blockbusters, such as Van Helsing, Christopher Nolan's spectacular 'The Prestige', Australia (starring alongside fellow aussie Nicole Kidman), and the X-Men series, playing the previously mentioned, Wolverine. Now he's currently bracing us with his vocal chords in Cameron Mackintosh's on screen adaptation of the long running musical Les Miserable, alongside another aussie pal, Russell Crowe (playing the evil baritoned police man, Javert).

The musical move isn't all so surprising though, as Jackman's early career in acting began on the musical stage. In the early nineties Jackman was offered a year long contract with Australian soap 'Neighbours', at the same time as being accepted into the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts in Perth. Deciding against instant fame as a soap star, he took the plunge and accepted his offer at WAAPA. He told Shave Magazine in 2008 “I always loved acting but when I started at drama school I was like the dunce of the class. It just wasn’t coming right to me. Everyone was cooler, everyone seemed more likely to

Hugh'sDa Man

It's strange to think that the same man we saw some years ago, as the hunky hairy clawed super hero 'Wolverine' is now singing his lungs out on the big screen as the French small time criminal Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. But Hugh Jackman is the Hollywood Man of the moment, and with the Oscars coming up at the end of the month, the Les Mis star isn't going to be out of our sights any time soon.

succeed, everyone seemed more natural at it and in retrospect I think that is good. I think it is good to come from behind as an actor. I think it is good to go into an audition thinking 'Man I’ve got to be at my best to get this gig.'”

In 1994, he was offered the role of the super-macho Disney villain, Gaston, in a stage production of Beauty in the Beast. Following this, Jackman moved on to gain experience in television and film, landing various roles in small mini dramas and Australian television series. This was when he appeared in 'Corelli' perhaps an important role as this was where he met Deborra-Lee Furness who would later go on to become his wife.

Eight years his senior, Deborra-Lee Furness and Jackman married in 1996, and in 2000 they adopted their first child, son Oscar Maximillian. They later adopted their second child in 2005, a daughter, Ava Eliot.

Hitting some small successes in Australian television, Jackman felt his heart lay in film and stage, so in 1996 he took on the huge musical production of Sunset Boulevard, playing the young screenwriter Joe Gillis. Noted for his brilliant voice, this career move set him moving faster and higher into the limelight and he was offered the lead role of Curly McClain in a revival of Oklahoma! at London's National Theatre. It was his biggest success yet, and his performance landed him with an Olivier Award.

The next move for Jackman was films back in his homeland, where he had various successful roles and became something of a national hit. But it wasn't until the producers of X-Men, having previously noted Jackman's performance in Oklahoma! pushed him forward for the role of Wolverine. The movie was a blockbuster hit, and sent Jackman into international fame. This kept rising, with the likes of his performance in Kate and Leopold earning him a nomination for a Golden Globe. Soon after this Jackman took the lead role as the extravagant Peter Allen in the Broadway production of The Boy From Oz. It was an all singing, all dancing extravaganza, depicting

the life of Australian singer Peter Allen who had been spotted by Liza Minnelli in 1964. His performance prompted renowned screenwriter William Goldman to write in Variety; “I have been going to the theatre for 60-some years. I was there for Brando in Streetcar. But nothing prepared me for Hugh Jackman.” Alongside Jackman's ever growing film fame, the actor continued the role until September 2004.

Jackman's fame continued to rise, starring as the lead in Van Helsing, playing the deadly vampire hunter Helsing himself, alongside the even more deadly and dangerously beautiful Kate Beckinsale, The Prestige in 2006; where he played alongside Christian Bale and Michael Caine in the turn of the 20th Century, as a rival magician battling it out in theatres across London, with tricks of transportation and deadly escapology acts, to Baz Luhrman's 'Australia', playing the Australian roughneck to Nicole Kidman's English aristocrat (replacing what was to be Russell Crowe in the lead).

But it wasn't until the producers of X-Men, having previously noted Jackman's performance in Oklahoma!

pushed him forward for the role of Wolverine.

He said of the role in an interview with Herald i.e HQ Entertainment in 2010: "This is pretty much one of those roles that had me pinching myself all the way through the shoot. I got to shoot a big-budget, shamelessly old-fashioned romantic epic set against one of the most turbulent times in my native country's history, while, at the same time, celebrating that country's natural beauty, its people, its cultures.... I'll die a happy man knowing I've got this film on my CV."

Moving up to the present, Jackman's role as prisoner 24601 (better known as Jean Valjean) saw Jackman finally earn his well deserved place in the Hollywood hall of fame, in December of last year. He said on his retrieval of the prestigious floor plaque “I believe this is the 2,487th star on the Walk of Fame. However, apart from Lassie, I'm the only one who's gotten it for playing the same character in 15 movies.” Earlier this year his performance as the all singing French criminal come-revolutionist won him a Golden Globe award for best actor and has seen him nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTA, to name a few.

Aside from being a talented actor, singer and all round desirable chap (he won the title of 'Sexiest Man Alive' by People magazine readers in 2008) Jackman is also a global advisor of the Global Poverty Project on which he also narrated a documentary of the same name. He has visited the UN to support the cause, alongside project founder, Hugh Evans and also hosted a preview of the Global Poverty Project Presentation in New York alongside wife, Debora-Lee.

As well as this, Jackman supports The Art of Elysium, an organization founded in 1997, encouraging working actors, artists and musicians to voluntarily dedicate time and talent to children who are battling serious medical conditions. He and his wife are also patrons of the Bone Marrow Donor Institute in Australia. Jackman's had various fund raising activities, using Twitter to announce he would donate 100,000 dollars to one individuals favourite charity, revealing some days later that he was to donate 50,000 to Charity:Water and the other 50,000 to Operation of Hope. And in December 2009 it was announced he and our very own Daniel Craig had raised $1,549,953, fund-raising for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS from the six weeks of curtain appeals at their hit Broadway drama, A Steady Rain, making a unique place for themselves in the history of the charity.

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER

VOLVO V40 CROSS COUNTRY

By John Sanson

The car tested is the V40 D2 with a 115 BHP Diesel engine and two wheel drive. Although lacking in the extra driven wheels the D2 has quite a bit more "go anywhere" ability than an average 5 door hatchback. The raised ride height gives the ride a brilliant cushion on today’s urban roads. I was charged with driving the car to Wandsworth on business and the Cross Country was a boon in and around the mean streets of Putney and Fulham. Potholes and speed humps were taken with aplomb and to be fair, even with the extra ride height, the handling was totally predictable and quite good fun. You can feel the back axle working hard to eliminate under steer. I don't think I have driven a car this quiet over bumps for years and coupled with the muted refinement of the engine the Cross Country feels like something from the class above.

Interior wise the Cross Country is a rugged as you would expect from Volvo. The interior is elegant too with a pleasingly spare Scandavian style. Specify the copper effect dash trim (as fitted to the test car) and the interior is lifted even further. The build quality is right up there with the likes of Audi, BMW and Mercedes and benefits greatly from not taking its cues from the boring German rule book. Space in the back is competitive within sector and the boot is a great size and shape with a low load lip.

The car does not lack equipment. From a safety viewpoint airbags are abundant (including a bonnet airbag for pedestrians). The Cross Country also has radar that will activate the brakes if necessary to avoid another car. A Lane Departure warning system is available too . The best safety feature for me was the optional Blind Spot Information

System (BLIS) that alerts the driver to unseen vehicles in the blind spots on either side of the car through lights at the base of the wing mirrors. This was great in the confines of the M2 on a dark evening in January at rush hour.

The Cross Country comes in two specs - 'SE' and 'LUX' and both have Sat Nav fitted as standard. The standard equipment list is too large to list but suffice to say Alloys, premium stereo system, cruise control and rain sensing wipers are standard for both. Transmission is a 6 speed manual as standard (very slick and great fun) or Tiptronic Auto. The Lux spec adds leather seats. Whichever one you choose will benefit from a real integrity of build and will give you a feeling that the vehicle will last many, many years despite what can be thrown at it. Well done again Volvo!

Since the XC90 quite a few years back Volvo has mastered the art of converting their standard road cars into robust chariots that are as at home driving up a boggy field in rural Gloucestershire in January as they are sat in the outside lane of the M4 in June. The Volvo V40 is the latest convert. For just £1000 over the standard (and brilliant)

V40 5 door hatch Volvo will raise the ride height by 40mm and bolt on stylish skid plates, standard fit roof rails and much more robust front and rear bumpers. 4 wheel drive is also fitted to the top spec T5. The Cross Country has twin exhaust pipes too. I know this is childish but they do look good....

You might not realise it but wine merchant Z&B Vintners has been around since 2005. Why have you never heard of them? Until very recently 90% of Z&B’s customers were based abroad and the remainder were outside of Kent. However, with their new premises in Biddenden and various projects on the go, Z&B aims to establish a strong relationship with the wine lovers of Kent. Set out in this article is a variety of ways that you can get involved with wine: from simply buying a bottle at the new shop; taking a wine course; attending a seminar; or even investing in highly sought after vintages.

Biddenden's Local Wine Merchant

Just outside of Ashford is Mersham-Le-Hatch’s business village, home to The Secret Garden restaurant and Kent Cookery School along with many other lovely businesses. March 2013 sees the opening of a wine shop in the village with a selection of wines that have been carefully chosen by the director of the company, Stuart. With over 15 years experience in the industry Stuart has a vast network of contacts and excellent relationships with the chateaux in France, particularly in the region of Bordeaux. Aside from the large variety of French wines, coming from regions such as Alsace, Loire, Burgundy and Rhône, there is an excellent selection from other areas of Europe, including Germany and Italy. Aside from the European wines there are North and South America vineyards represented in the shop as well as some excellent New Zealand and Australian vintages. As such the shop is able to offer a wide selection of wines with prices varying from £10 up to the elite end of the market where prices make your eyes water. However, these eye watering vintages will be available for everyone to try as the shop has a wall of Enomatic wine machines installed that deliver wine directly from the bottle to glass whilst preserving the properties and flavours for up to three weeks. Visitors can experience up to thirty-two extremely high quality wines at accessible prices with the use of a card system that integrates with the Enomatic machines. Why not get a group of friends together and come down for an evening of tasting around the long table? There will always be a variety of wines on offer with something for everyone to enjoy. There could be a selection of New Zealand wines in one machine, whilst a selection of rare WWII Bordeaux wines wait to be tasted in another. Customers are welcome to sit and try many, if not all, of the wines on offer - you will not be rushed out of the shop. Tasting events will be held in the shop from time-to-time and staff will guide guests through the wines of the night with the aim to enhance confidence in selecting your wines in the future.

THE VINoRIUM

[feature]

Wine investment is nothing new, in the past the English invariably bought more fine wine than they were able to consume and often sold off surplus wines at a profit. As the world became richer, the fine wine market changed considerably during the 1990’s. Increased demand from parts of the Far East has increased prices and demand to unprecedented levels and as a result the fine wine market has grown considerably. Growing interest from professional investors and specialist wine investment funds has also elevated demand and prices, but do not be fooled into thinking that wine investment is easy. It is vital to choose the right wines with a strong provenance. Purchasing highly regarded vintages is imperative, at the correct price and time, as is selling them at the optimum time and price. In the past the fine wine market has not been affected by stock market fluctuations. Generally it shows less volatility than the stock market and tends to flatten out in times of recession. Moreover, fine wine is normally the last to fall and the first to recover, as we witnessed during the global

recession of 2008 & 2009.In short, investing in fine wine can be a great addition to

an investment portfolio but choosing the right team to handle your wine portfolio is key. Z&B Vintners have put together a specific investment seminar to help potential investors find out more about the benefits of fine wine investment and also to guide them through the various pitfalls, including how to choose the right manager. The first free seminar will be held on Thursday 24th January 2013 and anyone interested is welcome to attend the evening. Spaces are limited with only 14 available - book yours today!

With Easter just around the corner, I’d like to share with you my favourite recipe from my forthcoming raw chocolate cookbook. Who would have thought you could eat raw chocolate, that is gluten free, dairy free and the best part, guilt free. Since discovering the health benefits of raw chocolate 5 years ago, I have not looked back, each day is a chocolate day in my house, it regulates my metabolism, which assists with weight loss, is the richest source of magnesium out of any food, high in zinc, copper and chromium and is the richest source of disease fighting antioxidants. Build your immune system, while relieving stress in the body through adding raw cacao to everyday recipes.

Raw Chocolate truffles are the first chocolate treats I discovered how to make and I’ve had so much fun developing this basic recipe ever since. Just with subtle changes to the flavour, I have not only satisfied my sweet tooth, but I have broken the habit for shop bought confectionery and discovered for myself just how advantageous to my health eating treats such as raw truffles are.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup raw cacao powder

1/4 cup agave syrup or to taste)

1/2 cup coconut butter (the butter needs to be melted, heat over a bowl of hot water until runny)

You can add some essence of your favourite flavours, such as rose water, orange blossom, lavender or mint to the mixture.

DIRECTIONS Add a few drops of your favourite essence to enhance the flavour of your chocolate. I work with mint, rose water, orange blossom, black pepper, chilli and my Mum’s all-time favourite, ginger. )

Blend all the ingredients together, until smooth, if not smooth, place over the hot water again or pop back over your bowl of hot water until totally smooth and place in the fridge for an hour, or until completely set. Scoop a teaspoon of the mixture into a spoon and mould into balls. Roll in cacao powder, or coconut flakes for a bounty-like taste, or - one of my favourites - bee pollen for extra superfood yumminess.

All the ingredients can be found on www.shoprawchifood.com

Simply Indian, WadhurstFishing for Compliments

It is something of a mystery, given that around 90 per cent of Britain’s ‘Indian’ restaurantsare actually owned by people with a Bangladeshi heritage – which owes much to its coastal location – largely ignore fruits of the sea. Most fish found on the menus of the nation’s 9,000 curry house is restricted to prawns, and usually bought in frozen at that.

The décor is stylish and modern, with a mirrored back wall and split-level layout giving a spacious feel to the well placed tables. Though Simply Indian, is a rare breed of new Indian restaurant, in that is does not claim to be offering fusion food or even a contemporary twist.

“Curry is the nation’s favourite food, why change it?” asked Jamal Rahman, co owner of the new 60 cover restaurant on the High Street of Wadhurst, near Tunbridge Wells.

True, the menu does feature all the usual suspects; Chicken Tikka Masala, Korma, Prawn Jalfrezi, Lamb Bhuna et al. But is does not end there. An extensive list of options contains many interesting sounding chef ’s specials and a good number of dishes unique to Simply Indian.

But it is the fish and seafood to which I was drawn. I pondered the Indian Squid Salad, before opting for the Kaffna mussels to start, whilst my first wife had the Simply Chula Salmon. They were wise choices. The Kaffna, cooked in a medium strength Bengali sauce, was sweet and pleasantly tangy. Salmon’s moist, slightly oily flesh, lends itself for Indian cooking so perfectly, it is a surprise it is not seen more widely in rival restaurants. Especially now that farmed salmon is so much cheaper than its wild counterpart. Although the farmed option can be bland and flabby, it takes up flavours like no other species. The firm plump chunks,

marinated in herbs and spices were a delight.

I stayed with fish as a main, considering the Steamed Sea Bass but deciding on the Bengal Mustard Fish – two fillets of skinless fandash prepared with mustard, cumin and fennel had a mild, buttery finish with subtle bite to it. I will order it again when I return, it was that good.

MFW decided that she had had sufficent fish for the day, and ordered the Bataak Achari – a duck dish. Cubes of duck breast had been marinated over night in a spicy yoghurt with green papaya, then baked in a clay oven. Pink and succulent, it tasted as good as it looked.

The dessert menu looked tempting, but the first two courses with vegetable sides, rice and breads, were more than adequate.

When I heard that a new Indian restaurant with a decent fish and seafood offering was opening in Wadhurst, I could not wait to investigate, writes George Shaw.

Service was warm and welcoming throughout and the owners were happy to chat between courses. In transpires that Simply Indian is the latest venture of successful restaurateurs Jamal Rahman and Kowsar Ali, who also own Indian restaurants in Bournemouth (Westbourne Tandoori), Reading (Bengal Reef) and West Drayton (Golden Curry), but were drawn to the

area because of its affluent population and scenic countryside.

They decided to open a restaurant here after visiting friends in the area and felt immediately at home surrounded by the rolling fields and ancient woodland,

“It’s clear from the fantastic range of quality restaurants and excellent local produce, local residents appreciate good food,” said Kowsar.

I’ll eat to that.

By Peter Nichols

The first impression one gets when seeing The Bull, set in the picturesque and historic village of Wrotham, nr Sevenoaks is that comforting feeling of a good old British country pub, destined to serve cask ales in cobbled mugs to be supped by a roaring log fire. While the pub more than meets the expectation upon entry (14th-century oak beams, a cosy interior, wartime memorabilia adorning the walls and a couple of roaring fireplaces), The Bull Inn has a lot more to it than meets the eye.

The building itself has been in situ since 1395 and it has been a “pub with rooms” for some time. However, until recently something had been lost from the building’s historic charm and the rooms had become stale, not especially noteworthy and distinctly dated – and not in a good way.

When Martin and joint owner Lygia Fontanella purchased The Bull five years ago it was always in the plan to restore the charm and character to this fine old building whilst making sure it kept its appeal to a 21st century visitor. Martin personally designed and oversaw the

complete refurbishment of the 11 en suite rooms, along the way uncovering magnificent oak floors and fireplaces (criminally covered with stud walls and boards), painstakingly restoring Georgian windows and finding a plethora of original beamed walls and ceilings.

My room (deluxe) played host to a magnificent four poster bed, luxurious leather couch, fireplace and beautifully restored wood floors – even the slightly uneven and original floorboards were preserved by design and really add to the ambience. Of course to accommodate the modern guest there was also a large flatscreen tv, wifi access and swathes of rich and retro Laura Ashley furnishings and a state of the art contemporary bathroom with slate, chrome, mood lighting and a bath deep enough to soak out the stresses of modern living.

The accompanying meal was superb and Chefs James Hawkes & David Evans truly deserve the plaudits (and awards) being heaped on the restaurant which is to adjacent the main bar and once again tastefully decorated. Treating myself to Pan fried lambs liver

and smoked paprika lentils followed by Harvel House pork belly, mash, savoy & meat jus enjoyed with a glass of house white (the wine collection is one worth noting with 100’s of wines, each one hand picked to accompany ingredients and dishes served in the restaurant – Martin’s knowledge of wine is quite staggering!) I can testify that this is definitely not your standard pub restaurant!

A good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast later I took a peaceful stroll around the village before heading home.

These gourmet breaks are currently on offer at The Bull and represent outstanding value considering the quality of the room and the restaurant. A couple can enjoy an overnight stay in one of the sumptuous rooms a three course AA rosette a la carte dinner for two and a full English breakfast for as little as £99 all in!

A wonderful “gourmet bolthole” and a one of the true hidden gems of the Kentish countryside.

I recently had the opportunity to visit the recently renovated Bull Inn at Wrotham, a delightfully restored coaching inn which is earning quite a reputation for its fine wines, fine dining and superb accommodation”. With its 4 AA star classification and AA rosette gourmet restaurant, an invite from joint proprietor Martin Deadman wasn’t going to be turned down lightly!

With an early restaurant career starting off at London's famous Savoy Hotel, going on to work alongside the likes of the Roux Brothers at Le Gavroche and then becoming Head Chef for Marco Pierre White at The Criterion, Mirabelle and Les Saveurs, it's no wonder Richard Phillips had his own Michelin starred restaurant by the age of 29.

Richard had excellent grounding to prepare him for creating his own restaurant, having come from two years with the Schrager Hotel Group, putting together and directing teams in both the Sanderson Hotel and St Martin's Lane, the first hotels owned by this group outside United States.

Richard has gone on to enjoy tremendous success with his restaurants Thackeray’s in Tunbridge Wills, Hengist in Aylesford and his most recent acquisition, Pearson’s Arms by Richard Phillips in Whitstable

Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer often has no obvious signs in its early stages. It's a disease all women should know about.

As women get older, it’s important to know about ovarian cancer. A few statistics first: In the UK, we have one of the highest rates of ovarian cancer in Europe. The disease is also the fifth most common cancer in women and, each year, nearly 7,000 people are diagnosed with the disease*.

Although the risks rise as you get older, the disease is not linked to the menopause itself. However, some drugs used to manage menopausal symptoms may increase, or indeed decrease, your risk. At the moment, it is not known what causes ovarian cancer.

The symptomsSo what are the symptoms? Frustratingly, they can be very vague when the disease is in its early stages. Some women aren’t aware of any symptoms at all, while some others may feel pain in the lower abdomen or side, and/or a bloated or full feeling in the abdomen. The first sign of ovarian cancer is usually an enlarged ovary. However, being located deep within the pelvic cavity, any swelling may go unnoticed until it becomes more advanced. At a later stage, symptoms may include:

• A swollen abdomen

• Lower abdominal and leg pain

• Sudden weight loss or gain

• Change in bowel or bladder function

• Nausea

• Swelling in the legs

• Irregular/unusual vaginal bleeding

Are you at risk?We know that some women have a greater risk than others. This may include you if you have a family history of the disease; if you’ve never been pregnant; if you’re receiving long-term oestrogen replacement therapy; and/or if you’re over 50.

Studies show that women who have had children, who breastfeed, or who use oral contraceptives (birth control pills) are less likely to develop ovarian cancer. These factors decrease the number of times a woman ovulates, and studies suggest that fewer ovulations over a lifetime may lower the risk of ovarian cancer, possibly because it reduces your overall exposure to oestrogen.

If you’re receiving oestrogen replacement therapy over a long term (more than ten years) this may also increase your risk. A chat with your doctor about the risks/benefits could be a good idea.

Top KnotchWest Kent Lifestyle caught up with Sophie Desai, creator of the fabulous hats at Coco Rose Millinery.Coco Rose Millinery

How did you get into the craft of hat making? My friend’s parents owned a hat business in London called Herald & Heart, which are very famous and when they moved their premises to Rye in East Sussex I began to work for them. I trained for 7 years with Tracey Mogard and managed their shop in the high street.

I love being able to match colours to customers outfits and create something that suits their style of outfit and which frames their face.

Where do you get your inspiration from? I love old movies, seeing how they used hats in costume to really bring out the character. I use this technique when I start making a hat, I think of the kind of woman that would wear it and what her occasion is and the impact that she wants to make. Usually its to trump the mother of the groom! I keep an eye on catwalk trends but hats really make their own trends, finishing off an outfit and making it feel complete.

How long does it take to make one of your creations? It can take anywhere up to 3 weeks, but it depends on what the customer wants or what inspiration takes me when I'm starting a new collection. Some feathers are harder than others to get hold of and then dying them to the exact right colour can take a few tries! When blocking a hat (moulding the sinamay over a wooden moulded shape) you have to wait for it to dry before removing it from the block, so sometimes it's a waiting game!

You were recently featured in Vogue - how did it feel to see your work in a high-end fashion magazine? It was a great feeling! A real high point. I really enjoyed making that hat

Do you think this was the feature that drew Kelly Rowland’s attention? Yes think so. Kelly's stylist, Joel Dash, blogs for Vogue.

How did it feel to make a hat for someone who is so well known? It was extremely unnerving! I only had 2 days to turn it around so worked exactly to the brief. She wanted something delicate but edgy with black, nude and clear crystal diamantes on so that it would sparkle and stand out against her hair. It was for one of the X Factor Live shows, or one of her many red carpet appearances. I definitely felt the pressure, but had to put it to the back of my mind and make it like it was any other customer.

Have you got any exciting projects or events coming up? I have a trip planned to Cape Town, South Africa, in January 2012 to see if the market is big enough for me to expand CoCo Rose Millinery there. My husband is from Cape Town and they have a lot of up and coming designers that I would love to collaborate with. They have race meetings and unquestionably good hat weather! When I return I will be doing the round of wedding fayres and exhibitions again to start off the season with a new collection.

wedding make up

Professional make-up artist

Gemma Dale talks weddings

with our very own Amy

McManus and shows us

how to achieve the blushing

bride look.

So tell us Gemma, what is bridal make-up?

My brides always have the same wish when it comes to their wedding day

looks. They want flawless make-up which makes the most of their features

and gives the perfect ‘beautiful blushing bride’ look. Bridal make-up is

generally quite natural and understated, but every bride is different and it is

important for them to get exactly what they want on their special day.”

How do you prepare the skin for make-up?

“Firstly by cleansing and applying a good moisturiser. If your skin is generally

quite oily use a lighter lotion. Then apply your primer to any open pores and

fine lines. This will smooth out the areas and give a smooth complexion so

your make-up doesn’t ‘sink in’ and highlight them.”

How do you achieve the perfect base?

“With the tip of your finger or a brush, apply a concealer on reddened /

darkened areas and under the eyes to even the skin tone. Use a highlighter

around the eye contours, the brow line and in the cleft of the chin. I like to

apply with a concealer brush and blend with a sponge to achieve a really

flawless finish. Next it’s time for the foundation. I use a mineral based powder

foundation as it is light on the face and is brilliant for skin prone to breakouts.

Apply with a kabuki brush in circular movements. Some beautiful blusher on

the cheeks and the flawless base is complete.”

What’s your tip for perfect bridal eyes?

“I apply three eyeshadows from the same colour group; light, medium and dark.

The light shade is applied from the lash to brow line, the medium in the crease

(or just above) of the eye and the darker on the outside corner of the eye. The

darker shade can also be used to enhance the Kohl eyeliner which is applied to

the corner of the top and bottom eyelid for a more natural look. The eyebrows

are carefully shaded in with pencil or powder to give more definition. Finally to

finish, I use a light application of mascara. Working from the base to the tips

and applying two coats. In some cases it also works really well to enhance the

lashes using a pair of falsies, but this is down to individual preference.”

Finally the lips: pucker up!

“Use a lip sealant to keep the lips soft and lightly apply a lip liner which will

stop the colour from bleeding. Try not to choose a bright lip colour as this will

draw the attention away from your eyes. A coating of gloss on top gives the

lips a youthful appearance and you’re done!”

There are a number of options available for the wedding breakfast to be held within the hotel, with private dining rooms to seat up to 120 guests. These are the Bayeux, Rose Garden and Chaucer rooms. There is also a purpose built evening venue area in the modern Pavilion building. The Keston and Chelsfield Suites are joined by an internal staircase and the downstairs Keston Suite benefits from a permanent wooden dance floor, built-in bar, direct access to an outside terrace area and air conditioning, whilst the upstairs Chelsfield Suite can seat up to 120 guests for the evening buffet, providing a quieter area for guests to enjoy the evening Reception. Celebrating its silver jubilee this year, the four-star hotel is an accomplished wedding venue, offering first-class service from the moment the preparations begin.

It is set in beautiful grounds, which were once a medieval deer park, and now contain an 18-hole championship golf course and wild life reserve – a perfect backdrop for wedding photos. The surroundings can be enjoyed whatever the weather as the terrace is canopied and dining areas have views over the greens. Inside, there is spacious seating for up to 180 guests in the Thurnham Suite or 90 guests in the Bearsted Room and marquee.

The hotel reception area is a light, airy location to greet family and friends, who will also benefit from spacious guest rooms and the use of a state of the art fitness centre, indoor swimming pool, treatment rooms and the championship golf course.

Anna Pomeroy, Tudor Park’s Wedding and Social Events Organiser, will advise the bride and groom on the preparations for their special day, ensuring every last detail has been thought of.

“It is very important that we listen to the bride and groom and take away their worries of the big day,” says Anna, who has been the smooth operator of more than 50 weddings in 2012. “If we look after the details, then they can relax and enjoy what will surely be one of the most memorable days of their lives.”

Tudor Park’s specialist team recommend preparations begin 12 months before the big day when the couple will meet with their own personal wedding and event’s organiser. The dedicated wedding planner will then guide the couple through every step, from choosing the wedding breakfast, to designing the table

decorations, so ensuring their wedding is unique as well as special.

To mark the hotel’s 25th birthday, the wedding team has several silver jubilee gifts for weddings booked this year, including the `top table goes free’ offer. Or, for wedding parties of around 50 guests, a complete four-star package is available for just £4,000. It includes room hire, all food and drink, from champagne to canapés, the wedding breakfast and wine to evening buffet, plus a Master of Ceremonies and a disco, and much more. And like all Tudor Park’s wedding packages, it includes the reassuring expertise of a dedicated wedding planner from the moment the date is set.

My husband and I were looking for a venue where we could have freedom to have, as Jon puts it ‘Creative Control’, working in an art gallery and Jon being a graphic designer, we were adamant we were going to make our creative mark on our wedding, therefore we needed a venue that would be able to give us the freedom to execute just this.

On first looking at Bradbourne House I was blown away – the exterior and interior is everything a girl like me, who could watch Pride & Prejudice (the TV series) all day every day, could ask for: Old Masters on the walls, a sense of history & most importantly it oozed romance. When you look out towards the lake through the huge Georgian windows no one could fault this magical wedding venue.

Our experience from start to finish with Bradbourne House was exceptional. We received a high level of service, from the food to the organisation of the house. We visited the house many times to get a sense of where everything would be placed and it must have driven them crazy, but we were always received with a warm welcome, encouragement and help with any of our plans.

However it was not until our food tasting that the real sense of excitement about our wedding day really set it. I cannot tell you how good the presentation of the food to the actual tasting was stunning. My only complaint would be, that my stomach just wouldn’t stretch enough to let me enjoy all of our evening buffet choices at the tasting!

We had a deep purple & black colour scheme however this wouldn’t work with the vibrant blue of the main reception room so I had all of our flowers and decorations white and creams with a hint of light purple and black elements merging into the room. Not ever seen a vague set up of what we wanted, which was long tables, very Jane Austin, I was completely speechless, when they took us in on our wedding day to have a sneak peak of the room, our dream had come true.

We had candelabra’s with cascading greenery and flowers with long tapered candles lit & when the natural light faded as the meal went on and the lights in the room were dimmed for speeches and the candles really glowed, my dream had become a reality. Looking out at every person I loved most in the world experiencing what Jon & I had planned for a year and everything being picture perfect, no bride could have asked for more.

I married by best friend on that Saturday and I look back on the day with shear happiness. None of our guests could fault the day – I mean it’s a given for the bride and groom that we were completely elated the whole day! However for our guests to rave about their experience of our day for months & months, Bradbourne House really did make our day very special for us as well as all our guests.

MY BRADBOURNE HOUSE

A picture perfect fairy tale is exactly what I would describe our wedding day, which took place Saturday 24th September last year.

Buying your wedding ring is an important step. Not only are wedding rings symbols of eternal love, but you are likely to wear your wedding ring for the rest of your life. Here are some tips for selecting your dream wedding ring.

1. BUDGETWeddings can be expensive, but a wedding ring is for life. Don’t get carried away by fabulous but expensive rings on offer, you can always upgrade later but many form such an attachment to the original ring that they don’t want to part with it, so try to buy something of quality.

2. COMBINATIONWill your partner be wearing her wedding ring alongside her engagement ring? If the answer is ‘yes’, then you may consider buying a curved wedding ring or one that matches and complements her engagement ring. A curved wedding ring can sit smoothly around the diamond on her engagement ring. A popular choice is to have both engagement and wedding rings in the same metal and style.

3. COMFORT If you enjoy sports and an active lifestyle in general, you may want to opt for wedding bands that are robust, secure and don’t scratch easily. A diamond wedding ring with a whopping great stone looks fantastic, but you may find it uncomfortable in the long run. To make sure that the fit is perfect for you we will size you and your partner’s finger over a cup of coffee in store and advise you on all aspects of your purchase.

4. STONE SET?You may decide that you would like gemstones set into your ring. A flush or bezel setting for a wedding band set with gemstones is more secure, but a prong or claw setting allows more light to go through the stone. Wedding rings with a bezel setting or a flush set diamond show only the top of the gems with a nice edge around it, making it less likely to catch your diamond ring on clothes.

5. METALShould you go for white or yellow gold rings, platinum, palladium or silver bands? Silver is a relatively soft metal and will tarnish over time. Gold, whether for a white gold wedding ring or yellow gold wedding rings, is fine as long as it not more than 18k. Pop into us at the Pavone store in Folkestone for a friendly chat and more information.

6. THINK STYLE / HIS AND HERSDo you go for identical his and hers wedding rings or buy different wedding bands for you and your partner? Matching wedding rings don’t have to mean that you both end up with the exact same wedding ring.

8. DESIGN YOUR OWN WEDDING RING For something truly unique, why not design your own wedding rings?

At Pavone Jewellery, we have a team of skilled professional craftsmen who specialise in creating made-to-order and one off pieces. We can create the wedding rings of your dreams from a single image or listen to your thoughts and ideas to make a preliminary drawing of your perfect ring!

9. DIAMONDSQuality is just as important as size. When you buy your diamond engagement ring or diamond wedding ring, it pays to read up on “the 4 Cs of diamonds” (cut, colour, clarity and carat weight).

In closing, remember that it’s your special day and whatever style of ring you choose to go for, make sure it fits in with your unique style and personality, as we hope you’ll only need one chance at this!

Wedding hair tipsSometimes left to the last minute to arrange, in fact wedding hair and make-up deserves a lot of consideration; after all they are the first thaings you will notice when you look back at those all-important photographs.

Party Fusion Party Fusion has been offering bridal hair styling, make-up, jewellery and hair accessory design for over ten years. The team of experienced hair stylists and make-up artists take the time to listen and understand, perfectly recreating your style on your wedding day in a calm and relaxed manner. The team would love the opportunity to be a part of your special day, so if you think they could inspire you, give Alexandra a call on 07980 767635 or visit www.party-fusion.co.uk

THE STYLIST It is often a good idea to search out a specialist wedding hairdresser and make-up artist. They are likely to be more understanding of the stresses of your big day and are used to working in a pressured environment.

Things to consider are; cost, get a detailed quote before you book; location, most will charge for travel; references, it is always good to hear about other brides’ experiences and of course personality, you will be spending the morning of the wedding with your hairdresser and make-up artist – it needs to be a team you will get on with!

THE STYLE The final style you choose should help you look the best you have ever looked, but at the same time, it is important not to stray too far out of your comfort zone. Remember you will be looking at your photographs for the rest of your lives and you don’t want to look like someone else altogether! Pictures can help, even if they are of styles and looks you don’t like, as it is an easier way to communicate your thoughts. Above all don’t be afraid to be honest with your stylists – they can take it!

The whole process might seem a little daunting, especially if you rarely experiment with your hair and make-up. So East

Kent Lifestyle has teamed up with Party Fusion, a wedding hair, make-up and accessory company near Ashford, to offer brides-to-be a few tips on how to end up with a stunning wedding look that you are comfortable with – and of course one that will last.

THE ACCESSORIES Hair accessories can turn a wedding guest hair style into a bridal hair style. Whether you go for a tiara, or some simple pearl pins it is worth thinking about how this can work with your dress, flowers and the theme of the wedding. Most florists will be used to being asked to provide flowers as accessories, so consider this as an option if it fits your theme. Handmade jewellery that matches your accessories can also be the perfect touch.

MAKING IT LAST Any experienced wedding hairdresser will leave you with a style that will last for the duration of your wedding. However there are a few things you can do to help; keep an umbrella close by, just in case; task a bridesmaid with carrying a style survival kit, containing hair pins, a mini can of hairspray, and lip gloss; and ask your stylist to teach a bridesmaid how to carefully remove your veil without upsetting your hairstyle. Oh and you could always invite your stylists to your wedding!

There are only 4 bungalow beachfront hideaways in a truly natural setting. Right on North Beach’s seafront doorstep is one of the most impressive coral reefs in seafaring history. There are a maximum of 9 guests at any one time. Escape, relax and never want to leave.
