COVER STORY

In her father’s footsteps: The amazing Deana Martin

When Deana Martin talks about Uncle Frank and Uncle Sammy it takes a second to get your head around the fact

that these aren’t just random relatives, but rather two of the most well known performers of all time, Rat Pack members Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. It seems quite bizarre but when you’re the daughter of crooner Dean Martin it’s just a normal part of growing up.

“It’s how I was brought up, because these people did come over to the house and so it could be Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Uncle Frank, Uncle Sammy,” she said.

“I was so lucky to know these people and to be able to watch them up close and personal.”

Lucky indeed when you consider that Deana Martin had access to the best sing-ing education that anyone could wish for, though it was her father’s famous musi-cian friends who were the most helpful.

“Frank Sinatra was one of the best. He was so generous with his time with me,” Deana said.

“He always wanted to help, whereas when I talked to my dad I’d say ‘dad what about singing?’ and he’d say ‘just sing from your heart, know all the lyrics’. See because for my dad it was so natural, it was just a beautiful God given gift, he could just open his mouth and sing.

“Uncle Frankie, he really worked on every note and on his phrasing and his interpretation of a song. And he would tell me about that, he made it important and I learned. That was great.”

While some celebrity offspring shy away from following their famous parent into show business, Deana Martin knew from a very young age that she wanted to be just like her father.

“I went to The Sands Hotel when I was maybe nine-years-old and when my dad walked out on stage, you know I’m sitting ring side, he walked out and the people around me gasped and said ‘there he is’ and I thought ‘oh, I’ve got to do that’,” she laughed.

“It was magical to me.”Dean Martin’s public persona was that of

the half-drunk crooner but Deana says the myths surrounding her father are false.

“I’m still always surprised when people come to me and say how did he do all that work when he was drinking so much, [it’s] because he wasn’t drinking so much,” she laughed.

“He wasn’t the one who was out until two, three o’clock in the morning with Frank Sinatra. My dad loved to come home and watch TV and have dinner with the kids.

“He never got mad, he was just even

KATE REID

keeled and the way you saw him, just natural and easy, that’s who he was.”

Deana Martin has very much embraced the role of Dean Martin’s daughter, and her show at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, February 14 will pay tribute to her father, and his musical contemporaries, through song and personal anecdotes.

“It’s going to be incredible songs, wonderful arrangements, fabulous musi-cians,” she said.

“There will be lots of humour and great music and of course a very touching duet with my father.

“I also have a wonderful video montage of home movies from when I was a little girl with my dad.”

The show has been a hit with audi-ences, selling out dates all across the US. Throughout her years of touring Deana has noticed that the age of audience members has started to change.

“Now I’m getting a nice big cross section,” she said.

“This music is classic and timeless. And the Rat Pack is so in. I mean they were the

cool, cool guys and the younger genera-tions are now seeing how cool they were.”

Though a talented singer in her own right, Deana has only ever wanted to be the proud daughter of one of music’s greats.

“I embrace it because there’s nothing else that I could possibly do because, I mean, I am Deana Martin, it’s not like I was one of my sisters. Everyday it’s a fact that I face when I’m introduced to someone. It’s always ‘Deana Martin? oh, any relation?’,” she said.

“I knew from a very young age that’s who I was, that’s what it was going to be.

“I knew that I had to be the best possible Deana Martin that I could be.”

The wonderful Deana Martin will be performing in Memories are Made of This at the Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, Febru-ary 14 at 8pm.

Tickets are $95 including dinner or $55 for show only.

For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au or call 9625 5500.

She’s the daughter of Dean Martin, and had singing lessons from none other than Frank Sinatra. Deana Martin really had no other choice but to enter the world of showbusiness, and now she’s made a name for herself in her own right...

Paying tribute to two icons of music

There are many impersonators around the world but very few look as similar to their musical

idol as Rob Caudill does. Rob has been impersonating Rod Stewart for more than 15 years and with his spiky blonde hair and that signature Stewart nose, he is often mistaken for the real thing.

Penrith audiences will get a chance to see this near perfect impersonator when he hits the stage at the Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers this February, playing all the classic Rod Stewart hits from his extensive back catalogue.

Joining Rob will be ‘Australian Idol’ alumni Ashleigh Toole, who made it into

the top 12 in the 2009 series of the hit show. Ashleigh will be taking on the role of Cher after working hard on honing her skills and perfecting Cher’s many idiosyncrasies.

Together Rob and Ashleigh will take audiences on a journey through the hits of two of music’s biggest names. This is one show that Cher and Rod Stewart fans won’t want to miss.

The Rod Stewart and Cher Show will be on Saturday, February 7 at the Evan Theatre. Tickets are $30.

For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.penrith.panthers.com.au or call 4720 5555.

LIVE SHOW

Manpower plans to turn up the heat at Penrith Panthers

If you’re a fan of muscles and don’t mind the sound of a room full of screaming audience members, then head down to the Evan Thea-tre at Penrith Panthers on Satur-

day, February 28 to check out the number one male revue in the world, Manpower.

Yes, that’s right, Manpower is still going strong and local ladies have the oppor-tunity to see the current members of the group in Penrith next month.

The group, which is known in the US as Australia’s Thunder From Down Under, have performed for over 10 million women across the globe.

Manpower has grown from their roots in a Surfers Paradise nightclub to two troupes, one performing nine sell out

shows a week at the Excalibur Resort and Casino in Las Vegas and the second constantly on tour.

There are currently more than 22 Aussies working with Manpower in the US, as the juggernaut continues to grow.

It’s been a wild ride for the guys who have made quite a name for themselves over the years; appearing on American TV shows including ‘The View’, ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ and ‘Project Runway’.

Manpower’s 2014 Australian tour sold out so be sure to get in quick to get your tickets for the show in Penrith, which is certain to follow suit.

Manpower Australia will be performing at the Evan Theatre on Saturday, Febru-ary 28. Tickets are $31.55.

This event is for over 18s only. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.penrith.panthers.com.au or call 4720 5555.

CHATTERON THE BOX

‘The Voice’ is going with a brand new

coach this year with UK pop star Jessie J replacing Kylie Minogue. Delta Goodrem is also back this year after having a year off in 2014 mentoring on ‘The Voice Kids’. Delta will replace Will.i.am who isn’t returning. Benji Madden is joining his brother Joel as a coach this season while Ricky Martin is back for his third stint.

‘The Block: Triple Threat’ is back on

Channel Nine next week, although it feels like we just had a series or two not that long ago. This season nine teams will compete for just four places in a rundown Melbourne apartment building. Six new teams will battle for three places while three returning All Stars will compete for just one spot. It returns Tuesday, January 27.

A number of popular shows from out of

the US have been renewed for further seasons. They include: ‘Madam Secretary’, ‘Scorpion’, ‘NCIS: New Orleans’, ‘Arrow’, ‘Supernatu-ral’, ‘Jane the Virgin’, ‘The Flash’, ‘The Originals’ and ‘The Vampire Diaries’.

An interesting series for the US history buffs

will begin on SBS One on February 5 at 9.30pm. Titled ‘Sons of Liberty’, the six part drama follows a radical group of young men as they change the course of American history. Definitely sounds worthy of a look.

FOX in America is considering reviving

some of its most popular ever shows including ‘The X Files’, ‘24’ and one of my favourite shows of all time ‘Prison Break’. While these shows may be a long way off from production again, Fox is trying to gain interest as to whether they could work.

Comedian Judith Lucy will launch a new six

part series on the ABC on February 11 called ‘Judith Lucy is All Women’. Lucy will explore just where women are at in modern Australia – and what it means for men. From the outback to the city, Lucy chats to people from all walks of life.

‘Wild’ has been creating quite a bit of buzz, with much critical praise and a host of award nominations including the Golden Globes Best Actress nomination for Reese Witherspoon, who takes on the lead role as down and out Cheryl Strayed.

After the end of her marriage and the death of her mother, Cheryl decides to pack up and escape. But where most would think of holidays and relaxing beaches, Cheryl decides, instead, to end her destructive behaviour and get her life back on track by hiking alone over 1000 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail.

Through all the trials and tribulations, this young woman’s journey ends up being the key to her salvation.

Witherspoon is joined on screen by Laura Dern, who plays her mother, Barbara, while the film was directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, who worked on the 2013 award-winning film ‘Dallas Buyers Club’.

The film is based on the popular memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed.

2015 will see Marilyn Manson hitting our shores for Soundwave in support of his ninth album ‘The Pale Emperor’.

It’s been a few years between drinks for Manson, who released his last album ‘Born Villain’ in 2012 to mixed reviews.

So far ‘The Pale Emperor’ has spawned several tracks including ‘Third Day of a Seven Day Binge’, a dark, swampy number, and the hard hitting, stomping rock track ‘Deep Six’.

The quality of these singles suggest that Manson may possibly be on to a winner with this one.

The album is a joint venture between UK-based independent record company Cooking Vinyl and Manson’s own label Hell, etc. ‘The Pale Emperor’ also sees Manson joining forces with Tyler Bates, who has worked on movie and TV scores including ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and the hit show ‘Californication’.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Manson admitted that several of the tracks on ‘The Pale Emperor’ were recorded in just a single take.

While Manson’s shock factor has worn off over the years, ‘The Pale Emperor’ is a testament to the fact that there’s still plenty of musical genius to come from this dark prince of rock.

The newest release in the ‘Saints Row’ series is here, and this time gamers will be going through hell, literally.

Playing as either Kinzie Kensington or Johnny Gat your mission is to save the Saints’ leader’s soul. On the way you’ll come across old friends, historical icons, old enemies, a full length musical number and a talking gun.

The game consists of five unique districts where you’ll battle it out with the Prince of

Darkness, while rescuing allies and fighting it out with nightmarish Arch-Dukes.

‘Saints Row: Gat out of Hell’ also features some very outrageous weapons including the option of shooting exploding frogs or a swarm of locusts at your enemies.

Add this to superpowers, like the ability to summon devilish imps, and you’ll well and truly be equipped to take on hell.

Go out and buy it if you’re a fan of the series!

Based on the best selling novel of the same name, ‘The Maze Runner’ follows Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) as he wakes to find himself trapped in an ever-changing maze.

Thomas has no memory of the outside world, and neither do the groups of boys he is trapped with.

The group of about 60 teenagers has been surviving on supplies and their own attempts at agriculture, with the longest residents being there a total of three years.

Every 30 days a new member joins the group but things change when a girl enters the maze with a strange note.

They must join together to face the maze which presents a series of dangerous obstacles, including the deadly Grievers who roam at night, just waiting to attack.

Will they make it out or will the maze keep them locked in forever.

‘The Maze Runner’ has been praised by critics and has been a box office smash worldwide, raking in more than $340 million.

Silver Spur has long been considered an institution of Penrith. For over 15 years, the Aztec-themed restaurant has been serving up arguably

some of the most delicious meals Penrith has to offer.

Boasting a family-friendly atmosphere, Silver Spur provides a dedicated play area for kids which includes PlayStations, a mini-cinema, face painting and other entertainment. Silver Spur also runs birthday parties with dedicated kids area seating and a ‘kids club’ membership service that mails out birthday vouchers and other fun things for kids.

In terms of food, Silver Spur offers a dedicated kids menu and, if that wasn’t enough, kids eat free on Mondays and Tuesdays.

On Friday nights, Silver Spur proudly hosts celebrated entertainer and balloon artist Matt Falloon and his Trained Balloons, who has been featured on Chan-nel 7 and Nickelodeon. Matt is always a hit with restaurant goers – whether they are young or just young-at-heart.

Silver Spur proudly serves some incred-ible food, including the delicious pork ribs, which come in a half or full rack portion and is slathered in Silver Spur’s famous BBQ sauce. The ribs come with a side of equally famous fries and fried onions.

The restaurant also offers half-priced burgers on Wednesdays, which is extremely popular with diners.

The burgers include traditional beef and chicken options as well as a spicy taco burger, sweet chilli chicken burger and crumbed vegetarian burger.

The Mexican menu is also a focal point at Silver Spur, with enchiladas, tacos and

nachos all keeping guests coming back for more. All have a spicy or non-spicy option, so there is something to suit everyone.

Silver Spur also offers a new gourmet chicken schnitzel menu, offering, among others, a taco, Hawaiian and cheddamelt

schnitzel to accommodate even the fussi-est eater.

Silver Spur is open for lunch and dinner every day, and is located at 123 Mulgoa Road, Penrith.

Standing tall in an elaborately designed exhibition booth, Thomas Smith looks confident as he explains to people the life changing adventure that he has been on for the past 22 weeks. Thomas was at Penrith RSL for the Max Potential Show Case, an initiative that creates a coaching partnership between local community leaders and year 11 students in the Penrith area. Thomas began this journey feeling like a fish out of water. At an introductory group session he struggled to make eye contact with his peers and coaches from the community. After 22 weeks Thomas has not only achieved his personal goal of developing stronger relationships with key people in his life, but has initiated a community service project with the organisation Paying it Forward Incorporated. He has committed to continuing to volunteer in a program that meet the needs of the homeless in our community.

“I’ve learnt what it means to go out and make things happen, to tackle challenges head on,” says Thomas of Jamison High School. “Rather than letting fear paralyse me, I have learnt to plan out my next steps and reflect on the journey so far. I’ve discovered there is always a way forward.” However, it wasn’t from textbooks and articles that Thomas learnt these lessons and principles, it was through coaching. Coaches take the experiences that life gives and helps a person interpret them and develop through them. They highlight the underlying principles in action. Thomas’ coach Frank Portelli is a Director on the Board of Penrith RSL Club and the instigator for the RSL’s sponsorship and facilitation of Max Potential.

“I’m passionate about leaving a legacy in younger generations,” say Frank, who runs his own Chiropractic Clinic in Penrith. “What I didn’t expect was the benefit I would gain from learning to be a better coach. The skills of listening and reflection help me serve my patients better and I have become a more effective leader in my volunteering roles. The fact I had the privilege of seeing Thomas develop in confidence and personal leadership is the icing on the cake.”

HISTORYTurning back Time

In the early 1800s, right in the middle of the suburb now known as Regentville, sat an enormous mansion that would still be consid-ered grand even in life today.

But the history of the Regentville mansion is shrouded by mystery as events that led to its demise raised

questions that have never been answered.During the years of settlement in NSW,

Sir John Jamison acquired 9,000 acres of land in the Penrith area following the 1811 death of his father, Thomas Jamison, a member of the First Fleet.

Jamison lived in a cottage by the Nepean River until he commissioned the building of a grand house, to be called Regentville, of which the foundation stone was laid on September 9, 1823.

Built using stone and materials from nearby, Regentville was finished the following year.

With 15 rooms, including a breakfast room, a billiard room and a library as well as a grand entrance hall, the mansion quickly gained a reputation as being one

of the finest houses in NSW at the time.In addition to the house, the grounds

stretched over acres and there were a number of other structures, including stables, a bake house, kitchens and a mill.

Among these buildings were quarters for the workers and labourers, one of which was a young Sir Henry Parkes.

There was a vineyard and groves of fruit trees and the land was also used to farm sheep and cattle. In addition to holding a reputation as one of the grandest houses in the state, it was also known for the extravagant parties held by Jamison.

In 1840, however, there was a depression and Jamison was hit hard.

He died at Regentville in 1844, aged 68.From here, the mansion fell into disre-

pair and was empty for years until it was picked up for use as a mental asylum run by a Gladesville doctor.

The quiet surroundings were expected to assist in the recovery of patients but the subsequent remoteness of the site meant that those who could afford treatment elsewhere elected to leave.

The house again was left empty when the endeavour failed. In 1865 the house and its grounds were leased by the Shiels family, who ran a private hotel.

After a few years, the owner looking to end the lease was selling Regentville’s furniture when the mansion caught fire

The details of what happened on the night of the fire in May 1869 were recorded during an inquest into the incident.

There were only two maids in the house at the time of the fire, who were woken by the sound of crackling and rushed to the ballroom, where they saw the flames.

The occupants of the house and those living on the grounds watched as the house was destroyed and many said that they could not see how the roof could have caught alight naturally.

It was concluded in the inquest that “the house was wilfully and maliciously set on fire by some person or persons unknown”.

While it was a great loss to Penrith that the mansion burned down, parts of this history are literally distributed all over Penrith.

When the mansion was reduced to rubble by fire, bits of the sandstone walls were salvaged and used in the building of Penrith’s roads and buildings.

The guttering on Station Street and Belmore Street was originally made from this sandstone, and the stone still lies in the walls of the Red Cow Hotel.

The site where the house sat still exists, though at one point was threatened by the development of Glenmore Park.

As for the fire, the case was never solved, meaning it remains one of Penrith’s longest-running mysteries.

Putting together a casual outfit to wear on a hot summer’s day is simple; all it takes is a pair of boardies and a t-shirt for the guys and a t-shirt dress for the girls.

But when it comes to dressing up for a night out or dinner on a summer evening, I really struggle and find myself longing for the cooler months when I can snuggle into printed trousers, heeled boots and a coat.

I think the problem is that casual summer clothes are so hard to dress up – it really is a challenge to make denim shorts or boardies look dressy, in fact, it’s unlikely you’d be allowed to step foot in a sports club or RSL – whereas our winter wardrobes can so easily be swapped from day to night.

This means that dressing for a summer night out requires the adding of a couple of extra items to the wardrobe, to be reserved for nothing but those occasions.

While I prefer to buy clothes that can take me from day to night, like my winter wardrobe, having a few special items to wear in the summer for occasions that aren’t just a trip to the shops makes wearing them that little bit more exciting.

For women, the items I recommend you get your hands on are tailored shorts, a pair of tan coloured sandals and a clutch bag.

Throwing on a pair of tailored shorts with a t-shirt or a button-up shirt immediately takes a look from day to night.

It’s important to ensure that the shorts are of a good length; leave the booty-shorts at home!

I say tan sandals because they can be worn with anything; any colour, any time of the day.

It’s well worth spending a little extra to get a leather pair, as they keep in prime condition for much longer, and because you can take them from day to night, you can feel a little better about the purchase.

I wear my Wittner tan sandals all the time, but especially in the evenings when I don’t feel like wearing heels.

A clutch bag is much nicer to take out to dinner than your every-day handbag and has the potential to tie in your outfit perfectly.

In addition, choose your accessories wisely for the evening; maybe swap your plain studs for big, colourful earrings.

@ktweed_

I would also recommend getting a mid-length t-shirt dress.

You can wear it in the day but it is long enough that a pair of heels takes it immediately to night time appropriate.

An all round dress is a great way to bypass the day/night issue!

Men have it a little harder; try as you may, shorts are never going to be something that you can wear in the evening, you are going to have to stick to pants but play around with colours to make it more summery; try a tan colour or blue rather than classic black and roll up the cuffs for a modern look.

Invest in a good quality polo shirt or short sleeved button up, which will keep you cool but still looking appropriately dressed for the evening.

Always wear a watch in the evening but if you have a bit of a collection, choose one that complements your outfit or swap from a leather band to a metal one.

Watches also happen to be great conversation starters.

Guys, you may want to put some thought into you footwear too.

Steer clear of shoes that have obvious branding, and slip on something with a little bit of class.

When brides-to-be come in to see us to start discussing their wedding band, one of the most common questions we get asked is ‘Does my wedding ring need to match my engage-ment ring?’ I thought this was timely to touch on as we are in the midst of wedding season.

The short answer is no – it doesn’t need to match your engagement ring. The style of your wedding band can be whatever you want it to be, matching or not.

Let’s say you have a very classic, white gold engagement ring with a round diamond in the centre and small round diamonds claw set on either side down the band. You may choose to go for a wedding ring with the same size and shape diamonds set in the same style of setting, which will match perfectly with your engagement ring design.

Or, you might prefer the look of square diamonds next to your engagement ring, perhaps larger rounds in a different style of setting or even a combination of shapes like marquise and round. What about coloured diamonds like pinks and yellows? Or even a different colour metal? You could opt for a ‘split’ wedding ring and have two identical rings (one either side of your engagement ring). The choices are endless!

Think about how and when you will be wearing your wedding band too.

If you are wearing it all the time, along with your engage-ment ring, this may influence your choice.

If you are planning on wearing it by itself most of the time, you may choose something wider and more substantial. If you’re working with your hands it may be best to go for a plain band versus diamond set.

A big trend right now seems to be the large, mismatched wedding band. You’ve probably seen celebrities with the wide band of claw set, round diamonds that sits apart from their engagement ring (often because the diamonds themselves are huge!).

I always advise our clients to try on many different styles. Often while doing this one or two will really stand out to you and we can start working out a concept from there. The important thing to remember is that YOU are the one that needs to love your wedding band.

Venus visits your money zone (until February 20) which often coincides with financial luck and a boost to cash flow. But with

Saturn squaring Venus, any gains could be gobbled up by burgeoning bills and increasing expenses. So plan accordingly, and don’t fritter good fortune away.

AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

You’re in the mood to nurture yourself with some of life’s little luxuries. Whether it’s gourmet food, fine wine or prestige per-

sonal-care products, you’re keen to pamper your Piscean self to the max. But you’re off in your own private fantasy world ATM, and what others say isn’t necessarily what you will hear.

PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Rams are in the mood to initiate, innovate and network, and oth-ers are finally sitting up and taking notice of what you’ve got to

say. But with Mercury still in retrograde mode take care in the way you communicate. A rushed message can too easily be sent to the wrong person! Friday is a suitable time to put people under the microscope.

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

Venus shifts into your social networking zone so strive to boost your social media presence. Talk, text, tweet and post away – the

world is waiting to hear what you have to say. Work matters look more complicated though, as a bossy colleague tries to hurry you up, but just keep cruising along at your own preferred pace.

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

A bored Twin is a recipe for trouble! So try new activities, go on an adventure or extend your peer group to include an interest-

ing, international crowd. Your mind’s jam-packed with ideas but just because you’ve thought about them doesn’t mean you’ve actually put them into practice. With Mercury still retro, double-check all travel ar-rangements and expect problems with cars or computers.

GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

Cancers are sometimes too cautious and risk-adverse. With Ve-nus, Mars and Neptune all activating your adventure/aspirations

zone, it’s time to jump out of your cozy comfort zone and pursue a daz-zling new dream. The stars also encourage you to talk about your fu-ture goals and broaden your vision. Be inspired by Oprah Winfrey “The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.”

CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

With Mercury reversing through your relationship zone (until February 11) don’t make assumptions about others. You know

exactly what you want and need this week, but don’t expect loved ones to be mind-readers. If you fail to tell them – politely and precisely – what you require, then how can they possibly please you?

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

You can become so obsessed with minor details that you lose sight of the big picture. The Mercury/Uranus link up helps you

appreciate a more varied and inventive approach. But Mercury is retro in your wellbeing and work zone, so expect health hitches or computer glitches over the next couple of weeks.

VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

Saturn squares Venus (your ruler) this week, so other people will be emotionally reserved, and you’ll feel somewhat shy and re-

tiring. With Venus shifting into your wellbeing zone (until February 20) it’s time to choose a diet and exercise plan that you actually enjoy. If it’s too hard or restrictive, then you won’t follow it for very long.

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Some Scorpios will experience financial problems, as Venus squares Saturn (in your money zone). Time to be careful with

cash and cautious with credit, as you are forced to dip into savings, bor-row money or reboot your budget. Under the influence of retrograde Mercury, strive to be extra tactful with family members.

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Is someone stirring you up by passing on scandalous second-hand news? Blame it on Mercury reversing through your com-

munication zone. So steer clear of garrulous gossip plus avoid over-reacting when a frustrated family member pushes your emotional buttons. With Saturn sauntering through your sign it’s time to be a pa-tient, disciplined and circumspect Sagittarian – if you can!

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

With Saturn moving slowly through your solitude zone, you can end up being your own worst enemy, full of self-doubt and harsh

self-criticism. Don’t waste precious time stewing over your mistakes. Use it as an opportunity to face your fears, learn more about yourself, and then move on. Your motto for the moment is from US President Franklin D. Roosevelt “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

So you have blown the dust off the exercise equipment under the bed and started a bit of a program for the New Year.

What are some basic tips to do a good workout? While you’re fresh and ready to go, do your most complicated

or demanding exercises first. You will have better form before you get too fatigued.

Work big body parts first. If you train a small body part first you will make a weak spot for the next exercise if it uses the same area.

Think of doing as many bicep curls as you can till your arms feel like jelly then walking over and trying to do sets of chin ups.

You will probably just dangle from the bar with your arms straight because the biceps are too tired to do their part, so all your back muscles aren’t getting any training.

For a similar reason if you have dumbbells, barbells or machines, use them in that order.

The smaller, stabiliser muscles you use with dumbbells fatigue before your larger muscle groups. So progress to machines, which require less help from your smaller muscles, as you grow tired.

And a good habit to keep motivation is, test yourself often. Maybe every four weeks, measure a variable-waist size, run a kilometre, bench press, that matches your end goal.

It’ll show you the tangible results of your training. And that translates into motivation. Make sure it’s relevant to your desired change!

Don’t get pulled off your goal trying to achieve results some-body else sets. If you’re trying to get fitter to play with the kids it doesn’t matter what your bench press is.

The things you measure are the areas you put in the extra effort for because you know you’re accountable.

And always take the time to have a good stretch. If you’re under 40, hold your stretches for 30 seconds. If

you’re over 40, hold them for 60 seconds. As you age, your muscles become a little less pliable, so they

need to be stretched longer. Put in the work and you will see the results.

The International Consumer Electronics Show, held this month in Las Vegas, revealed some of the biggest tech trends likely to become a reality sometime in the next 12 months. Here are just four:

Smartwatches: Announced in 2014 and due to be released in March, the Apple Watch is set to bring wearable tech into the lives of the average consumer. Together with Samsung and Pebble, Apple is expected to kickstart the smartwatch technol-ogy race – as each company competes to release the device with the most sought after features. Watch this space for watches that can deliver message notifications, display emails, place calls and offer similar functionality to your phone.

Virtual reality headsets: Once considered a science-fiction dream, virtual reality is coming to a head this year. Samsung has announced the release of its much-anticipated headset, expected in “early 2015″. This device will use a Galaxy Note 4 phone as its screen, displaying immersive virtual reality that allows consumers to engage in games, videos and other media.

Mobile payments: While we have enjoyed mobile and online banking for some time now, our smartphones could soon be used for more than just checking our balance. Apple Pay is just one example of this coming trend, and enables users to pay in store by simply tapping their phone on the register and confirming the purchase using their fingerprint. Now that Apple is involved, it is likely that other tech giants will join the party and release their own versions of this exciting technology.

Hoverboards: That’s right! ‘Back to the Future II’ was not too far off in its predictions for hoverboards. While we are facing a chicken-versus-egg scenario deciding whether the technol-ogy is only being developed because of the film, excitement is growing over the impending release of the world’s first func-tional hoverboard. The current prototype, developed by Hendo Hover, needs a copper floor to work properly and may require a small personal loan for most of us to afford.

Fortunately, with the rate technology is developing around the world, this release heralds the beginning of a hover-revolu-tion. After the first device is designed and sold, it will become easier for other would-be inventors to perfect their designs, so fully-functional, affordable hoverboards may not be far away.

The tech we’ll soon be spending our cash on

Rabbit calicivirus is a haemorrhagic disease which is highly infectious and can be fatal to both wild and domestic bunnies. Australian authorities have approved the virus for the use to control the ‘wild’ rabbit population and it is very common all over NSW. Unfortunately, pet rabbits can also be infected and suffer from this horrible disease.

How is calicivirus spread? The virus is present in saliva, nasal secretions, urine and faeces

of infected rabbits. It can spread either via direct contact or indirect contact from food, bedding, clothes or other objects. The virus can also be spread through other animals and insects such as birds, fleas and mosquitoes. It is also a very resistant virus and can live for extended periods of time in the environment.

What are the symptoms of this disease? Since the virus can invade many different organs, the symp-

toms can vary between different rabbits. Signs include loss of appetite, lethargy, fever, shaking or spon- t a n e o u s bleeding from the n o s e , mouth or bum. Sadly, there is no cure for calicivirus a n d prevention is the best way to protect your bunny.

How can I protect my pet bunny?

The best way to protect your rabbit is through regular vaccinations. All rabbits should be vaccinated yearly to protect against calicivirus. It is also important to try and avoid any contact with wild rabbits. Rabbits are also best housed in insect proof facilities as insects can carry several diseases to rabbits.

Calicivirus in rabbits: What you need to know

For many people, this time of year is an opportunity to pause for breath, the chance for a rest, to get away and have a break. Yet rest is a funny thing. We have these few weeks off over Christmas and New Year to try and recharge our batteries but then we’re back into it again! Madly chasing our tails. Busy. Flat out. School. Sport. Some people working six and often seven days a week. Certainly not much chance for rest there!

You might be surprised to know that the Bible is concerned for both our physical rest and also our spiritual rest. For exam-ple in the New Testament book of Mark, as Jesus’ popularity is growing, and more and more people are keen to meet him, it is becoming increasingly busy. Jesus says to his disciples, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Jesus knows how important it is for us to get physical rest; to have a regular break and get away from it all.

But there is also spiritual rest. In the New Testament book of Matthew we hear Jesus say, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls.”

Here is real rest! Not just for a few days, but for all eternity! Peace and satisfaction with God. The joy and contentment of learning from Jesus; knowing that your soul, your very life, is safe for all eternity. Is this a rest that you know?

Rest for your soul and why it’s important

SENIORSPENRITH’S #1 GUIDE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS

Think about your health

For cancer sufferers pushing their health and fitness to the back of their minds, Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) has a message: you

are missing out on an improved mental and emotional wellbeing.

Knowing how important exercise and healthy eating is to the wellbeing of local people and understanding how especially challenging it is for those with the disease, the Network is supporting local breast cancer sufferers and survivors to get their health on track. Two booklets detailing healthy eating and exercise advice for people with breast cancer have been released by the organisation.

The release of the booklets has come as no surprise to local woman, Kerrie Dowd-ing, who knows from her own personal experience just how important health

and fitness is to those living with a cancer diagnosis.

Ms Dowding was first diagnosed with breast cancer 22 years ago and has only recently been diagnosed with advanced breast cancer, but she hasn’t let it stop her.

“I feel that sitting down has no benefit. You are just sitting down, feeling bad about life and yourself. Getting active changes your perspective on things and you start to feel healthier,” she said.

Each week she does the bridge to bridge walk around the Nepean River, as well as three days of training with the Pendrag-ons, the local Dragons Abreast dragon-boating team (pictured), and throws in other exercise if she’s up to it.

Training with the group of like-minded women who make up the Pendragons is what she enjoys the most and is something that she says has changed her outlook on life.

BCNA’s booklets are free and can be ordered by calling 1800 500 258 or down-loaded from www.bcna.org.au.

Skype, email and Photoshop are words that may resemble a foreign language to seniors who

are not up to scratch on their computer skills.

But it doesn’t take much to go from being computer illiterate to becoming a tech savvy senior when the Penrith Valley Seniors Computing Club is involved.

The local club specialises in helping the older members of the community to get their heads around ever evolving technology.

“We provide a friendly environment in which seniors can learn the use of computers to enhance their lifestyle.

The club attempts to cater for all levels of computer experience and needs, in a relaxed and casual environment,” said secretary, Lorraine Brown.

All basic computer skills, including communication, card making, movie making and how to use the Internet, are covered in lessons run by the club.

For those who have a basic knowledge already, there is an advanced class avail-able.

The club is holding an open day on Thursday, January 29, at the Penrith Seniors Centre at 86 Station Street, Penrith, where there will be two sessions, one beginning at 9.30am and the other at 1pm.

Westside Performing Arts trains true professionals

At just eight years of age Larissa Stretton has hit the dance competi-tion world by storm.

Larissa started solos at the beginning of 2014 and in just one year she has received three firsts, two thirds and one highly commended, placing in every competition she has entered.

One eisteddfod had 35 competitors and she came first.

Larissa has a jazz solo and at the end of last year entered a tap solo. Over the holidays Larissa performed her tap solo twice coming first both times. Not only that, but on one occasion the whole audience cheered when she finished.

Needless to say tap is her favourite, gaining 98.5 per cent in her Level 3 tap exam last year.

Larissa learns ballet, tap, jazz, singing and drama at Westside Performing Arts.

“Larissa is a very enthusiastic student who is always keen and wanting to learn more. She loves all styles of dance and is quite a talented actor as well. She is going to be a real triple threat,” said Laura Harrison, one of the Principals of Westside along with Jenine Wright.

“Westside performing Arts is the real triple threat studio in Penrith. In this day and age you have to be able to sing as well as you can dance to make it as a professional,” said Ms Harrison.

Westside take students from the age

of three to adult working on the aim to engage and inspire children of all ages.
