Using the ideals of the Quality Matters program these three sessions will provide you with some great strategies that you can use to dramatically improve your online and hybrid classes. The first workshop offers a variety of tips to improve how you can better engage your students in their learning. The second workshop on effectively measuring students’ progress adds to the first workshop by sharing ideas on how you can authentically evaluate your students’ learning. The third workshop on modules will show you how to organize a really coherent module with a beginning, middle and end instead of just “posting stuff.” All three of these programs are a great step towards awarding your class the Quality Matters Certificate of Excellence.
Mix and match! All three workshops are open to all instructors so attend the full series or just the one or two that interest you.
Creating that Perfect Module Using Learning Objectives October 5 | 1:00-2:00 pm | HLRC-4E | Jim Marteney | Digital CampusHow good are your class modules? Are they just a collecIon of random secIons, or are they really focused on specific learning objecIves. This session will give you ideas on how to create effecIve learning modules by exploring the structure of a module, the content of a module and most importantly how to create module learning objecIves that gives direcIon to our modules. This is one of the key standards for a course to be cerIfied by the Quality MaLers program.
Effectively Measuring our Students’ Online Progress October 19 | 2:15-3:15 pm | HLRC-4E | Jim Marteney | Digital CampusDo the assignments of your class really align with the goals of your class? Are we giving tests just to give tests? If the goal of your class to write persuasive essays how does a mulIple choice test help that? In this session, we will explore a variety of assessment ideas including different types of grading policies, assessments we can do online, how they are sequenced, and how we can offer student feedback. This is one of the key standards for a course to be cerIfied by the Quality MaLers program.
How the Online Education Initiative Can Improve Your Students' Success December 8 | 3:30-4:30 pm | HLRC-4E | Eric Ichon | Digital CampusWest was selected as one of 8 colleges to parIcipate in the Online EducaIon IniIaIve's (OEI) Student Readiness Pilot. The OEI's goal is to increase student access to online courses and to improve student retenIon and success rates. 1:00 - 2:00 pm Voki! Giving Students a Unique Voice in Etudes HLRC-4E
Linda Alexander | Technology & the ClassroomVoki is a program that allows us to “speak” through animated characters. Students create Voki videos on a specific course-related topic and share it with the class in a very concise manner. Important information is reinforced as a result. Students are also encouraged to help those who may be less teach-savvy in creating Voki videos. This allows them to engage in collaboration, a highly valued aspect of an individual’s soft skills. And those who receive assistance must “give credit where credit is due” by indicating who helped them. This enhances what students have been learning about acknowledging sources of information though appropriate citations. Examples will be shown and discussed.
2:15 - 3:15 pm Reading Apprenticeship: For Beginners and for Those Who Have Been Trying It Out! HLRC-4E
Nancy Sander | Teaching & LearningParticipants will learn about how to model reading in a discipline. The presenter will model and explain collaborative routines. Participants will practice RA routines to experience RA for themselves. 9:00 - 10:00 am Managing Security in Your Digitally Interconnected World Webinar
Dr. Jan Vanderpool | Digital CampusThe past few years have seen a dramatic rise in the extent to which we as a society have become more and more interconnected in our business, personal, and family lives. Valuable and often very private information is stored by and about us in databases scattered throughout the planet. We are connected to our information through the Internet, our business networks or LANS, our home networks and our mobile devices. We access our information through what are known as end-points and these could be your office or home desktop, your connected laptop or tablet device or even your WiFi connected smartphone; each giving relative carte blanche access to your sensitive data. This workshop will guide participants in ways to examine their own security vulnerabilities and secure unprotected endpoints against unwanted intrusion.

Rita Shemwell | Digital CampusGrading Discussions on Etudes – Is it a nightmare for you? Discussions can be the heart of an online class. In some cases the message boards are the only place where students can freely communicate with each other on a number of focused topics created by you: the instructor. Discussions can also be a grading nightmare. Drop by this workshop to find out tips on how to make grading discussions easier and quicker for you to grade.
3:30 - 4:30 pm Just-in-Time Teaching Strategies HLRC-4E
Karen Quitschau | Technology & the ClassroomJust-in-Time Teaching is a teaching and learning strategy which facilitates active learning by utilizing a feedback loop between web-based learning materials and classroom instruction. Before a subject is discussed in class, students post responses electronically to assignments on this topic (called WarmUps and Puzzles). These assignments are designed to let the teacher know what the students already know, what they are unclear about or what they are having trouble with before the material is discussed in class. Students submit these responses a few hours before the class begins to enable the teacher to know what to focus on more specifically in the classroom.

Lisa Saperston & Luo Yilan | Technology & the ClassroomAs you know, teaching IS the best job in the world! In the classroom, you are not only your own boss, but also the host of your own reality TV show! A successful class is just like a successful TV show. Learn how to make a hit “show” because a hit show in the classroom means piquing student interest and engagement in their learning. In this Tech Fair workshop, Heidi and Lisa will share how to borrow some popular TV shows and incorporate them into the classroom. Since this is where students spend much of their time, using popular TV shows as an educational tool allows teachers to incorporate where students would like to be in their academic learning environment.

Dr. Jan Vanderpool | Teaching & LearningThere has been a great deal of conversation within and outside of the academic community concerning student’s apparent lack of critical thinking skills. In this brief workshop, we will explore a few tips and techniques that may offer a better understanding of student subject mastery in the taxonomical areas of Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating and Creating.

2:15 - 3:15 pm Voki!

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17
1:00 - 2:00 pm Turnitin.com: Introduction, How-to Guide, Tips, and Best Practices HLRC-4E
Susan Herdzina | Technology & the ClassroomInformation will be given about not only how to use the program in general, but also how to implement the program in an actual class. Turnitin consists of three core tools: OriginalityCheck, GradeMark, and PeerMark. OriginalityCheck compares the paper's text to a vast database regularly updated with new content. Once assured of the paper’s originality, instructors can use GradeMark to provide rich feedback using drag-and-drop marks, voice comments, and rubrics. PeerMark facilitates the management of peer review exercises so students can evaluate and learn from one another’s work. Here is how Turnitin.com works: An instructor creates accounts for his/her classes. Then, students get the information they need to register themselves. Instructors create assignments on the Turnitin.com website. When assignments are due, students will upload their own essays, and Turnitin.com will generate an originality report identifying any borrowed material and its source. (You can also use this feature as a teaching tool to help students avoid plagiarizing.) There are many functions to Turnitin.com: come find out more! *Note: To register as an instructor with Turnitin.com, please email Eric Ichon. However, you do not need to be registered as an instructor for this workshop.
2:15 - 3:15 pm Life is Better With a Website-Enhanced Classroom HLRC-4E
Susan Herdzina | Technology & the ClassroomWhat reasons are there for taking on the seemingly “extra” work of maintaining a website for your face-to-face classes? (1) Save students money on books! (2) Save paper! (3) Save yourself time – in and out of class (so it’s not more work)! (4) Save time for your students. (5) You can assign non-textual supporting materials (like interviews, documentaries, other web pages, etc). (6) You may empower students! (7) Having students use your website helps fulfill West’s Institutional Student Learning Outcomes (and perhaps some of your department’s program SLO). A website that enhances your classroom opens up learning possibilities and communication with and among students. Come to this workshop to discover some insights and/or contribute your own! You do not need to be certified to teach online nor do you need a website to attend; but we welcome input from those with ‘experience’, too!

Among others, we provide them with the support they need and teach them strategies to help them succeed. West’s mission is to provide a “transformative education.” How do we do this? We hope that teaching students about growth mindset can be one way to do it. But how about us educators, staff members and administrators? Do we have a growth mindset? Are we also being transformed along the way? Come and learn more about the growth mindset concept developed by Dr. Carol Dweck from Stanford University. Learn about the Cultivating Growth Mindset intervention project at West, the results showing how the intervention had impacted the student participants, and how you can incorporate growth mindset in your teaching and learning, or for support staff, in performing your daily tasks.
