Kenneth Taira | Technology & the ClassroomAs 21st century instructors, we are increasingly making use of video content, whether our own or from YouTube, Vimeo, Ted Talks, EdX, Khan Academy, etc. Are your students getting the most out of the videos that you assign? Shouldn’t academically watching videos academically be a basic skill just as Reading Apprenticeship is for academic reading? We’ll show a free web-based tool that will automatically create a Google Doc document that allows for automatically time-stamped notes. More importantly, clicking on the note will take the student and play the video at the time stamp. This will make it easier for the student to:* Refer to the exact timestamp in discussions or questions* Demonstrate that they have actually studied the video by turning in the notes.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16

9:00 - 10:00 am Adding Features to Canvas with LTI and SCORM Webinar

Kenneth Taira | Digital CampusWith many CMS’s, you are limited to only those features allowed by the CMS administrator for the entire server. With Canvas, you can expand custom features for just your course by using LTI-compliant add-ins. This means that you can have single sign-on between your site and a publisher’s web content (such as MyLab from Pearson, etc.) where you can use their exercises and have it automatically place the scores into your Canvas gradebook. Or you can add features and content such as badging, content sites, lockdown browsers, etc.

Access the webinar at www.cccconfer.org.  To access the audio portion of the webinar to ask questions if you do not have a computer microphone, call (888) 886-3951 and enter PHONE ACCESS CODE: 625654. See login directions on page 4.

10:15 - 11:15 am Sifting Through the Maze-Academic Search Optimization Webinar

Dr. Jan Vanderpool | Web 2.0 & Social SoftwareHow many times have you started out with the clear intention of finding a specific item somewhere on the Internet only to find yourself hours later no closer to finding your target but with dozens of previously unknown destination sites now residing in your search history? There are over four billion web sites on the Internet with approximately 100,000 new ones being added each day. The flood of new information often makes the task of finding what one wants a truly daunting experience. This workshop will provide you with tools, tips and techniques to assist you in narrowing your focus and locating your objectives with laser-like accuracy in a fraction of the time.

Here are a couple of responses: “Students on the online setting can invite classmates to join study groups... since a lot of the time students learn well from each other’s level of understanding and or point of views of a specific subject.” “Something to do with video can help students to see the other person on the other end of the screen. Maybe a few times throughout the course there would be a requirement of submitting a video post of some kind.”

Other responses will be discussed in the workshop. Please stay tuned!

A contact management system that screens calls, and allows free phone/texting while abroad. Like my own personal digital secretary who would cost $30,000 + but is entirely free. You can have quiet hours when the phones do not ring, special tones for special callers, and block out solicitors. Plus, if you lose your phone, you still have a great contact management system intact, wonderful for those who teach in multiple campuses.

2:15 - 3:15 pm Faculty Know: Taxes! Spend, Save and Play Nice Nice! HLRC-4E

Grace Chee l Digital Campus, Web 2.0 & Social SoftwareHow to spend more to save on tax, retirement and other tips including travel. Will also share technology tools for easier access to funds. As an added bonus, and pending interest, I will also provide tips for free airline, hotels, and other invaluable tips for the upcoming summer!

3:30 - 4:30 pm Oral History, the Research Paper Template 4.0 and Research Lab HLRC-4E

Grace Chee | Digital Campus, Teaching & LearningBack by popular demand, and with some modifications based on feedback from students and colleagues, introducing the research paper template 4.0 and guided research lab. With the guided lab and template, I now receive some of the best student research papers with excellent sources. Last semester, I had students write oral history papers, creating their own primary sources. They connected to their assignment in a way I have not seen previously, as they interviewed family, community leaders and faculty. The student papers brought tears to my eyes. Along with the template, I’ll share with you the small steps I take, both face-to-face and online to demystify the research process into smaller steps for students. Students loved it, and told me that they would use the template for their other classes. I receive professional looking papers, most of the time.
