History of West Norwood & Tulse HillWest NorwoodThis high ground was once completely covered with trees as part of an enormous area ofnative woodland known as the 'Great North Wood', which covered over 1,400 acres of the oldCounty of Surrey. The North Wood was originally common land in the Manors of Croydon andLambeth and most of it belonged to the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Before 1885 West Norwood was known as Lower Norwood, in contrast to Upper Norwood andSouth Norwood. These areas were created as a result of the enclosure acts which divided upthe Great North Wood, hence the name 'Norwood'. The first act in 1797 was for Croydon andwas mainly in favour of the Archbishop of Canterbury in the south, while the second in 1806was for Lambeth, being mainly in favour of Lord Thurlow to the north.

The new parish required a church, so St. Luke's was providedunder the Waterloo Church Scheme, one of four built inLambeth (the others being Matthew, Mark, and John) and wascompleted in 1825. Originally St Luke's parish served just a fewsubstantial villas, and some more humble worker's cottagesmainly situated between Knights Hill and the High Street. Theearly 19th century saw the arrival of recreational tea gardensaround Knights Hill and Beulah Hill, and the South MetropolitanCemetery in 1837. The new railway line to Sydenham andCrystal Palace in 1856 heralded major changes, and many ofthe larger houses and gardens were demolished and replacedwith predominantly terraced and semi-detached housing overthe next 4 decades.

Norwood High Street never developed into a major shoppingparade as originally planned; instead most local shops have

been located on the Norwood Road between York Hill and St Luke's. Horse-drawn tramsshuttled passengers along this road from the terminus in front of St Luke's to Herne Hill, andbeyond.

The two world wars witnessed fatalities and bomb damage to many buildings in the area, withYork Hill and the areas around the railway suffering particularly badly. Chatsworth BaptistChurch had to be rebuilt after a direct hit. Many of the post-war estates were built on bombsites or replaced areas which had experienced damage.

Tulse HillThe name of the area comes from the Tulse family, who came into ownership of farmland inthe area during the period of the Commonwealth in the 1650s. A member of the Tulse familymarried Richard Onslow, 1st Baron Onslow, and the land remained in Onslow ownership until1789 when most of it was purchased by William Cole. The estate was further divided on Cole'sdeath in 1807 and in time led to the creation of Tulse Hill and Brockwell Park.

Famous, Former and Current Residents:Ken Livingstone - formerly, Mayor of London, attended school in Tulse Hill.Sir John Scarlett – Head of MI6Adele – SingerTom Utley – Journalist of Daily Telegraph and Daily MailHiram Maxim - who developed the first portable fully automatic machine gun in the garden ofhis house in Norwood Road (Serbia House, now demolished).
