• International cadets have been at West Point since 1816 and program officially began in 1884
• Prominent International Graduates
- Former Nicaraguan President Anastasio Somoza, Jr., Class of 1946
- Former Philippines President Fidel Valdez Ramos, Class of 1950
- Former Cost Rican President Jose M. Figueres, Class of 1979
• 440 International Cadets have been accepted
• 46 Active International Cadets representing 38 countries
• 14 Accepted into Class of 2018
Governing Legislation Facts • 162 countries invited to nominate for Class of 2018
• Countries invited to participate are selected by:
- US State Department
- US Department of Defense
• Each country can sponsor and nominate up to 6 candidates
• IAW P.L. 107-107 (Dec ’02), USMA is authorized international cadet strength of 60 in USCC
• An individual country cannot have more than 3 cadets at USMA at any one time unless granted a waiver by OSD
Governing Legislation
Tuition Waivers • US Law – foreign countries must reimburse for tuition cost of approximately $76,944.18 annually
• Secretary of Defense is authorized to grant tuition waivers in whole or in part:
- Maximum of 20 full waivers at any one time
- No limit on partial waivers which waive up to 66% of tuition
- Tuition assistance determined by GNP of country
- No waivers for World Bank “High Income Countries” (GNP greater than $12,476)
