The News-Ledger followed up with the actual horses that the students had read about. The students came to Westmore Oaks (the “old” River City High campus on Clarendon Street) for a special assembly last week. The horse trailers were parked on the school’s football track. Emcee Roberta Firoved, a member of CRC, introduced the riders and horses when they each came closer to the excited children who had gathered near the field. She told the assembly about the hors- es’ breeds and explained where the horses came were from and what they were trained to do. She explained some details about the horses, such as why their eyes are on the sides of their heads. Because their eyes are located there, they are able to see nearly 360 degrees at one time and watch for predators. Horses can gallop at around 27 miles per hour. Domestic horses have a life span of around 25 years. A male horse is called a stallion. A female horse is referred to as a mare. A ribbon cutting will occur at 8:45 a.m. and the store will open to the public for sales at 9 a.m. “The Big Blue Recycling Barn Thrift Store was created to reduce the county’s carbon footprint and meet our strategic plan objectives focused on waste reduction,” said Yolo County Board of Supervisors Chair Jim Provenza. “The repurposing of items through this store will save valuable landfill space and the proceeds will be used to further educate residents on related programs.” Yolo County’s new thrift store is modeled after a compila- tion of best practices from Monterey County’s Last Chance Mercantile and Habitat for Humanity’s Re-Store in Sacra- mento. The Yolo County Central Landfill already provides an opportunity for residents and businesses to recycle or safely dispose of waste, whether it is hazardous waste, elec- tronic waste, household garbage or construction materials. The addition of the thrift store, and its adjacent donation station where gently used items can now be dropped off, cre- ates a one-stop-shop for reuse, recycling and waste disposal. The Big Blue Recycling Barn Thrift Store will initially be open June 3 to June 5, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Depending upon inventory, the plan is to open the store the first weekend of each month. Taking inspiration from a song written col-laboratively by students, the name of the June exhibition at Gallery 625, WAKE UP CALL YOLO, features stu-dent and teaching artist work created during the past school year. The featured students and teaching artists partic-ipated in the YoloArts Juvenile Justice Arts Education Program at Cesar Chavez Commu-nity School and the Yolo County Juvenile Hall. Students at the Yolo

County juvenile hall ex-perienced a 24-week art program gaining knowl-edge and practical skill in the visual arts, poetry and blues music. Teach-ing artists Tomas Mon-toya and Maceo Montoya taught drawing, print-making, painting, and mural design (Maceo) to students at juvenile all and YaYa Porras taught poetry. Blues musicians Paris Clayton and Pat Balcom presented blues music history and prac-tice to the students, and assisted the young songwriters with their lyrical creations. At Ce-sar Chavez Community School students explored photography, color the-ory and collage with teaching artist Melissa Uroff during 8 weeks of art programming at the grade 7-12 school.“I believe that we have

instilled in the students, not just an appreciation of art, but also an un-derstanding of planning,

Alice Through the Look-ing Glass The MPAA has rated this PGWalt Disney Studios Mo-

tion Pictures brings us a sequel to their “Alice in Wonderland” of six years ago, “Alice Through the Looking Glass”, this time with some screenings in 3-D and in IMAX presentations in selected cities. Several of the players from the first movie return, including Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Terrant Hightopp, Mia Wasikowska as Alice, Helena Bonham Carter as Iracebeth of Crims, The Red Queen, her sister Mirana, Anne Hathaway and Ste-ven Fry as the voice of the Cheshire Cat. In a prologue showing Al-

ice, much more adult from when we last saw her, we find that she is the master of her own ship at sea and from what we see, quite a good one. When she returns from her voyage, she discov-ers there are some pressing financial issues that weigh her down. These include the pending confiscation of her ship and possible loss of her ancestral home. Distressed, she once again notices that the looking glass in a seclud-ed room beckons her, and through it she goes. She is informed on arriv-

al in Wonderland that the Hatter’s life is slipping away from him, and he is ridden with regret that he has lost his family, the Hightopps. He is wounded further by Alice, who visits him, yet does not believe his story. She must find out just how

to reverse time so that the Hatter may save his fami-ly. The answer to how that may be done is contained in a little time-travel orb called the Chronosphere. To find it, she must actually meet Time himself in his far-away castle. The screen writer, Linda

Woolverton, may have been inspired in coming up with dialogue for some of the time related elements of this movie by a scene written by Truman Capote and John Huston for the 1953 movie “Beat The Devil”, where Pe-ter Lorre defines time: “Time, time, what is time?

The Swiss manufacture it, the French horde it, the Ital-ians squander it, Americans say it is money, Hindus say it does not exist...You know what I say, I say time is a crook!”Time himself is a new char-

acter in the Disney telling of this story, an amalgam of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass”. Time is played by Sacha Baron Cohen, naturally, with a Swiss-German accent. This movie’s fantasy world

is escapist not only in place but in and out of time as well. Part of the rich imag-ination that dazzles the eye is the handiwork of Oscar winning costumer Colleen Atwood . Her costumes are quite sumptuous in this pro-duction. The move is techni-cally a wonder, with some remarkably good sound recording and subtle use of clever sound editing, much of it the work of Benjamin A. Burtt. Larger than life in 3-D and IMAX is surely the

best way to experience this movie, which I found highly entertaining. Yes there are moments in the in and out of time sequences when it seems much more like sci-ence fiction that Lewis Car-roll, but it is well done. Per-haps the designers were also reading about Baron Mun-chausen . The Gothic design of the interior of time’s castle is splendid indeed and Hel-ena Bonham Carter’s Red Queen is joyfully wicked and intolerant. Not a great film, but a highly visual and en-tertaining one. Madcap fan-tasy and fun.

X-Men: Apocalypse The MPAA has rated this PG-13Twentieth Century Fox

Film Corporation offers “X-Men: Apocalypse” from director Bryan Singer, who helmed the first of sever-al X-Men movies in the year 2000. The most recent X-Men movie before this one was set in the 1970s. This one is set in the 1980s. Returning are Professor X, played by James McAvoy, Magneto played by Michael Fassbender, and Mystique played by Jennifer Law-rence. These principal players

must re-unite as another mutant from ancient Egyp-tian times forces himself into the present. He is the all-powerful and Egyptian god-like En Sabah Nur or Apocalypse for short and you may sure bet that he will collect four mutant horsemen to cleanse the world of what he perceives may be its iniquities. At the U.S. intelligence agency, we

see actress Rose Byrne as MacTaggert, who has just returned from a hidden dig in Egypt and seen remark-able things occur before her very eyes. The X-Men pay her a visit and she tells them what she’s discovered about the rise of Apocalypse.I was surprised at the rich

level of detail and care taken with the photography in this movie, which runs a long 144min. Cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel has taken great care to light the bigger than life personali-ties majestically. In the role of the all-powerful En Sabah Nur or Apocalypse as he is alternately called, is talent-ed Oscar Isaac, in blue face paint and dress of an Egyp-tian God. He summons four helpers his “four horsemen”, as it were to protect him for destruction as he plans to purify the earth and wipe it clean of national superpow-ers and what he calls false gods. The four horsemen of the

apocalypse of the bible’s Book of Revelation were Conquest, War, Famine and Death. In this story partial-ly written by director Brian Singer, Apocalypse’s help-ers are made up of Storm, played by Alexandra Shipp,

Psylock, played by Olivia Munn, aforementioned Mi-chael Fassbender as Magne-to, and as Angel (as in angel of death), a young newcom-er that caught my attention that I’d not seen before, En-glish actor Ben Hardy. He does not have a lot of screen time, but it is memorable. I have never been a fan of

Marvel comics or DC Com-ics turned into movies. I of-ten argue that there is not enough character develop-ment and that without in-vestment in an entire series of these movies the casual moviegoer that has not seen all in the series may not catch-on to much of the nu-ance in the fast paced nar-rative. However, in this pic-ture I was seduced from the opening shot set in ancient Egypt and looking stunning in 3-D. I was delighted by the time that was taken to re-introduce old characters and solidly establish new ones, like Cyclops with his destructive eyes, played by Tye Sheridan. It had the feeling of a classic Saturday afternoon serial, in which pith-helmeted explorers search through Egyptian ruins. Mind you this is no master-

piece of cinema, but highly

entertaining, even when it goes over the top with CGI effects of mass destruction. I viewed it in my mind with child-like delight of watch-ing Godzilla destroy Tokyo. The cast is top-heavy with talent, including a return to the screen for Ally Sheedy. One of my favorite young actors today, Nicholas Hoult turns in a solid performance. I think he’s going to go on to great things in his career. Marvel legend Stan Lee’s obligatory cameo has an un-usually serious tone. Two performances elevate this movie to something to real-ly enjoy; that of Oscar Isaac and that of Michael Fass-bender as Magneto, who is really sensational in his performance, which is given enough context for it to reso-nate with the audience. I found this far superior to

any other comic book based story in the movies of recent. Much care was given to the look of the movie but most of all; it’s fun to watch. With all of the dissecting that one can do with a movie in crit-ical analysis, sometimes we might forget an important value for the moviegoer: Is it fun? On that level, X-Men: Apocalypse soars above many.

Friends and Families of suicide loss support groupThe effect of a suicide on friends and family can be overwhelming. Survivors of suicide loss often state that no other loss has been as painful or confus-ing.In a group with others who have shared a similar loss, support comes from exploring, sharing, and clarifying feelings. Indi-viduals are encouraged to consider attending no matter how long ago the suicide occurred. The group meets monthly at Yolo Hospice. There is no fee for this group, funded by the Ladd Clark Me-morial Fund and Suicide Prevention of Yolo Coun-ty. 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Yolo Hospice1909 Galileo Court, Da-vis, 95618.

Enter from the back parking lot at 2628 El Camino Ave., Ste D-18. JuneFree suicide loss sup-port group starts in June Suicide Prevention of Yolo County (SPYC) will begin holding a month-ly “Friends and Families of Suicide Loss Support Group” or Survivors Sup-port group at Yolo Hos-pice beginning in June. The effect of a suicide on friends and family can be overwhelming. Sur-vivors of suicide loss of-ten state that no other loss has been as painful or confusing. Additional feelings of guilt, anger, and sadness can create a complicated grief process. In a group with others who have shared a sim-ilar loss, support comes from exploring, sharing, and clarifying feelings. Since suicide grief can have an ongoing impact, individuals are encour-aged to consider attend-ing no matter how long ago the suicide occurred. There is no fee for this group, which is funded by the Ladd Clark Memorial Fund and Suicide Preven-tion of Yolo County.
