A Note from the Director

What makes a classic? There are those whowould say that "a classic" is anything that has en-dured the test of time. I would argue that a classic issimply an old favorite we never tire of. Nostalgicfor some, "South Pacific" is definitely a classic. Like afavorite flannel shirt, well worn and comfy, thisshow reminds us of where we've been, where weare, who we are and how much we have grownfrom the journey.

"South Pacific" has been entertainingaudiences for decades, with it's lighthearted charac-ters and memorable songs like "Bali Hai","SomeEnchanted Evening", and the everlovin' "HoneyBun". So why should tonight be any different?Obviously based on WW II,"South Pacific" addressesthe adversity which is war. Ironically enough, thecast and crew of tonight's performance find them-selves working together to present a period piecewhich, forty years ago, would have had many of uson opposite sides. West Valley Light Opera proudlypresents "AClassic" and only the names have beenchanged to protect the innocent ... who are they?Time will tell.

Tino J. Cecilio

Who's Who in Our CastRICK FRANK -Emile de Becque -We welcome Rick backto our stage for a repeat performance in this role which hefirst performed in 1979 with WVLO. This will be his tenthproduction as a performer (he has also directed three ofour productions, "Brigadoon", "Wonderful Town" and "TheDesert Song") Long-time subscribers will remember hisdelightful portrayal ofAlfie Doolittle in our '78 and '85 pre-sentations of "My Fair Lady". Rick first caught the actingbug when a friend talked him into joining the male chorus

of "The Desert Song" in 1973 and he has been involved ever since. His directorialcredits also include "Damn Yankees" & "Night of the Demons", as well as his mostrecent effort, an original play,"Pearl of York" ,which was his biggest challenge todate because he was able to do 'everything' (set, lighting, directing, etc.) An engi-neering specialist for Lockheed Martin, Rick has shown his acting versatility byconvincingly playing Dracula, Alfie Doolittle and Emile de Becque. He and hiswife, Gayle, a talented dancer and choreographer, live in San Jose with their twodogs, Kolya and Movedra. In his spare time, he enjoys chess, fencing, and tennis. We are delighted to have Rick back after such a long absence and hope he doesn'tstay away so long in the future!

WENDY THARP -Nellie Forbush -Wendy makes her debutwith \VYLO,but regulars at the GaslighterTheater will rec-ognize her immediately. She is almost a regular in thoseproductions, having performed as Fifi in "The Courage ofPepe Le Pue", Beth in "The Dilemma at theTollroad Inn",Pearl Drops in "The Other Greatest Show on Earth" and mostrecently, Mazola Corn in "Fields of Corn". Her other creditsinclude Hope in "Anything Goes", Grace in "Annie" (SJCMT)and Gwendolyn in "Little Mary Sunshine" (SCP). A nativeCalifornian, she is a licensed cosmetologist in California and

Arizona, but works as a Human Resource Specialist for Philips Semiconductors. We are always grateful to have fresh, new talent like Wendy join our company.

Robert is also a native Californianwho loves ballroom dancing, reading and hiking as hob-bies and works as a consultant as aWebmaster. He saysthe highlight of his career was passing the Jeopardy testthe second time. His career ambition is to make a decent

living as a paid professional performer. Good luck, Robert, in fulfilling your ambi-tion; we are always delighted when we can say,"We knew him when ... !"

She recently appeared asAnastasiaBrown in our last production, "Me & My Girl", but BloodyMary is definitely the highlight of her career thus far! Beais a bookseller for Borders Books &Music, and in her sparetime loves sewing and gardening. Her family includes her

husband Jerry, 3 sons and 2 grandsons. Her ambition is to do as many shows aspossible-she's apt to break some records if she maintains her current pace.Congratulations,Bea,on your first "real" role; we know there will be many more!!

BILL ERENETA - Captain Brackett - Not only isthis Bill's debut with WVLO, it is his first stage ap-pearance! With a BSin Physics and Math from SDSUand an MPAin Human Resources Management fromGGU, Bill only recently took up singing to sing forhis son's wedding. Although retired from the Cityof SJ as the Deputy Director of Aviation at the SJInt'lAirport 3 years ago, he founded AdministrativeManagement Services to provide services to smallbusinesses. DID YOU KNOW?• that Broadway Director, JoshuaLogan, was the one who asked Rich-ard Rodgers to read James Michener'scollection of short stories, "Tales ofthe South Pacific" to see if a musicalcould be created using the storyabout "Fo' Dolla"', (Bloody Mary)?

• that after reading all the stories,Rodgers & Hammerstein decidedthey needed to incorporate that storywith another one entitled,"Our Hero-ine", which told of the romance be-tween a French planter and anAmeri-can nurse?

• that Ezio Pinza of the MetropolitanOpera had been anxious to appearin a Broadway musical and the roleof the French Planter was perfect forhim so he was signed immediately?

• that Rodgers & Hammerstein wantedMary Martin for the Nellie Forbushrole, but she was reluctant to sing onthe same stage with Mr.Pinza, so theypromised not to write a duet for her, gave her the five songs they had al-ready written for her and asked herto call them the next morning, and itonly took a few hours for her to callthem to accept the role?

• that it only took Richard Rodgers fiveminutes to write the music to "BaliHai" after Hammerstein handed himthe lyric?

• that "South Pacific" opened on Broad-way at the Majestic Theatre on April7, 1949, and that the rave notices thenext morning resulted in ticket linesaround the block?

• that tickets were impossible to get atany price and the joke originatedhere about the lady explaining theempty seat next to her was causedby her husband dying and when theyinquired why she couldn't get some-one to attend with her, she replied,"They're all at the funeral"?

• that "South Pacific" was awarded aPulitzer Prize for drama and for thefirst time the committee included acomposer (Richard Rodgers) in thedrama prize?

• that the show ran for five years onBroadway and on the emotional nightthe show closed,Myron McCormick,(Luther Billis),with tears in his eyes, announced the curtain would neverbe lowered on "South Pacific"-sincethen there has hardly been a daywhen this show has not played some-where in the world?
