My first real fashion experience in West Van was when I laid eyes on a creme-coloured cashmere

wool coat in Aritzia at Park Royal about eight years ago. It is a timeless piece that I still wear every winter in rotation with a vibrant black and white newsprint motif Desigual jacket – from Pilar’s Boutique – featuring ‘50s fashion icons and ruby jewel-tone buttons as accents. I’m strolling past the shops in Dundarave in that very jacket in the picture at left. In this issue of West Vancouver Living you will be introduced to an eclectic group of local entrepreneurs - from butchers to jewellers to home decor specialists - that enhance West Van’s small-town community values.

Some of the greatest moments in feminine fashion and style history happened when women borrowed items from the wardrobe of their significant others, says Sara Roka. The Milan-based designer, by way of West Van, has tailored her collections around the men´s classic button-down shirt. It was an accidental fashion discovery: Roka was caught without a breezy wardrobe on an impromptu trip to St. Barts. Clad in sunglasses, flip flops and a bikini - she threw her boyfriend’s white long sleeved shirt over her flirty two-piece, rolled up the sleeves and voila - the reaction from people was undeniable. Roka immersed herself in art classes at Sentinel Secondary in West Van. Her impressive design portfolio opened doors for her at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York where she studied under Michael Kors and Valentino. She quite enjoys the quality and shape of men’s fabric - and embraces the challenge of marrying masculine and feminine threads. “I’m not about Swarovski embellishments, it’s more architectural,” says Roka.

Blush bridal salon in Ambleside has upped the couture ante in the local wedding scene by introducing an exclusive “Vera Wang by Blush” shop within their store.

Vera Wang’s iconic wedding gowns are the toast of regal affairs: Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton donned a strapless ivory gown with a swirling skirt of laser cut organza for her wedding – and this summer, celebrity princess Kim Kardashian said ‘I do’ in a strapless Vera Wang design with a fitted bodice, full tulle skirt and an epic train.

The senior vice president of Vera Wang - Todd Bernstein – paid a visit to Blush on August 24 and gave the bridal boutique the Vera Wang stamp of approval; it is officially the only store in BC – and one of two in Canada – to carry the New York-based designer’s unparalleled gowns.

To say Blush owner Lorna Paterson is elated about her partnership with Vera Wang would be an understatement.

“I’m over the moon excited,” exclaims Paterson. “Vera Wang is the crème de la crème of bridal designers.”

Brides-to-be can reassess that pre-wedding shopping trip to NYC. In essence, Blush embodies the New York Vera Wang selection and experience at their waterfront locale in West Vancouver.

Her handiwork is splashed in the interiors of Cactus Club Park Royal and Browns on Lons-dale. They were Harris’ first professional interior design projects - and so naturally she is a little nostalgic. “In Park Royal [Cactus Club] we had authentic native tapestry designed locally and those really are my favourite pieces, says Harris. “North Shore Browns, I would say the chandelier was my baby – my first custom lighting fixture.” Six years ago she was one of the first people on the scene at the Village at Park Royal - an outdoor shopping concept that encompasses the vibrancy of bustling coffee shops and eye-catching window displays on open-air shopping streets. Harris became obsessed with the then-new Whole Foods that opened up across the way from the Cactus Club that she was infusing with

colour at Park Royal Village. Sitting comfortably at the harvest table dressed in woodland-themed china, glass oil lamps, and other rustic inspired decor, Harris gets philosoph-ical about her mainstay three loves. “My approach to design, fashion and food is

approachable,” she says. “You just have to get good with the basics.” And with the pressure of pulling off the perfect Thanksgiving dinner on the horizon, there is no need to be intimidated, promises Harris.

Do you want to know the secret to her stuffing that has the potential for a melee over second servings at Thanksgiving? Half a pound of but-ter. She also pays homage to her Ukrainian heritage with beet rolls - small morsels of raised bread dough wrapped in beet leaves and baked with generous amounts of sour cream. And for a dessert trick? Vanilla bean infused whipped cream is easy to make and adds a touch of class to the end of the dinner. As Harris’ search for a life-long cooking com-panion continues, one thing is certain: she will never quit her love affair with homemade food. “My dream is to have a farm and make my own goat cheese – but I’ll be wearing a gown like this while I do it,” jokes Harris. ‘Bachelorette’ Jillian Harris brings more than just a pretty face and engaging conversation to Thanksgiving dinner: there’s a good chance she may have plucked out the feathers of that harvest bird. Growing up on an acreage outside of Peace River, Alberta, Harris says she always went pheasant hunting in the fall. One year she helped her dad skin a moose. “You have a real appreciation for where the food on your plate comes from when you dismantle an 800-pound animal,” smiles the petite brunette, reach-ing for a curling iron to style her own hair for her West Van Living close-up at a waterfront home in Lions Bay.Vegetarians and men with bravado bigger than their stomachs beware: Harris is offended when people don’t eat all of their meat or when restaurants offer a gluttonous burger challenge that results in wasted food. Her downhome lifestyle is a far cry from the sprawl-ing hilltop California mansion - and a nightly rota-tion of sparkling ballgowns that Harris was seen in by millions of North American viewers on ABC’s ‘The Bachelorette’. On the reality dating show she searched for love, in part using a hot dog topping theory to characterize men. Ketchup guy: kind of boring, also known as vanilla; mama’s boy, dependable and sensitive. Sauerkraut guy: a good-looking player-type with tons of personal-ity, spontaneity and confidence. Unfortunately, the fiancé that Jillian chose on the show, Ed Swiderski, didn’t reveal his true hot dog topping – Sauerkraut – until after the cameras stopped rolling. New suitors take note: the way to Jillian Harris’ heart is through comfort foods. And her taste might be slightly unconventional. A piece of toast smothered with butter and marmite – and topped with sliced tomatoes and Emmenthal cheese is her go-to indulgence food. The North Shore itself was a heaping dose of comfort for Harris when she moved from small-town Alberta to the metropolis of Vancouver. Her first trip north of the Lions Gate Bridge arches and Harris had hit the jackpot: she had discovered a community with a small-town vibe. Harris, an interior designer, spent plenty of time on the Capilano First Nation reserve, collaborating with local artists on projects slated for trendy restaurants.

Beet RollsINGREDIENTS

Frozen (or fresh) bread dough (thawed)

Beet leaves (24-26)

1 cup of whipping cream

3 tbsp of butter

Salt & pepper to taste

1 tsp dill1 clove garlic

METHOD

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel and set it in a warm place to rise until doubled.

Clean your beet leaves while the dough is rising. Cut stalks from leaves.

Pinch off small pieces of dough (about the size of a walnut). Place a piece of dough in the centre of one end of a leaf, then roll the beet leaf loosely around the dough. Place in a lightly greased baking dish and line up rolls in a single (or double layer) in the dish. Cover and place in a warm area until the dough rises again.

Cover the dish and bake at 350F for about 30 minutes or until rolls are puffy and slightly golden.

Melt butter in a saucepan, then add the cream, dill and garlic. Bring to a low boil and then reduce until ready to serve. Ladle the sauce over the rolls and then place in oven for another five minutes.

Turducken: A turkey that has been completely de-boned except the wings and the legs - which is then stuffed with a whole boneless duck - which is then stuffed with a whole boneless chicken.

Whiskey Women Mad For...


A theory as to the influx in women whisky swiggers: They may have been subconsciously entranced by the dapper Don Draper who routinely raises a tumbler filled with the hard, caramel-coloured liquor to his lips on the TV show Mad Men.

In Dundarave, Libations Liquor Store manager Alex Staehling has taken note of the revolving door of women inquiring about a myriad of whiskeys.

On Sept. 8, she decided to host a women and whisky food pairing event at the store. Within days of scrawling the details on a chalkboard behind the front counter - throngs of women emerged from the woodwork and signed up for the whisky affair.

Many of the ladies congregating together at Libations revealed it was their dad who introduced them to whisky by offering them a wee bit to mature their taste buds.

“I would suck on the ice cubes,” recalled one woman. “Whiskey tasted like Javex to me,” said another.

North Shore resident Sandra Laundry attended the event with her husband, Patrick Koropatnick, a self-admitted whisky lover.

“I thought it would be helpful to familiarize myself with whiskey and participate so I can choose better drinks,” she says.

Nine varieties of whiskeys in all - including the Amrut single malt from India, and the classic Johnnie Walker gold label - were poured for the ladies, and a handful of accompanying men; they ranged in price from $60 to $110.

And with each whisky came the perfect culinary accouterment. The Talisker - a 10-year-old smoky-sweet single malt with a hint of sea-salt and a warming, peppery finish - was paired with smoked salmon on pumpernickel, courtesy of the neighbouring Dundarave Fish Market.

“I never thought to pair whisky with food; it took the edge off the sharpness of the alcohol,” remarked Laundry.

Of course there was unbridled excitement amongst the women when the chocolate course came out.

“Women, whisky and chocolate, that’s why we are here,” exclaimed one female guest.

Another way of making whiskey approachable to women is through the cocktail culture. There is a huge resurgence growing around cocktails with dark spirits.

Ah fall: a season where foliage slowly transforms into a panoramic portrait of bronze, gold and red hues, refreshing crisp air enters your lungs - and when sheets of rain pelt you the moment you step outside.

Don’t let that seemingly unpleasant, latter fall description deter you from riding your bike into the winter months. Think back to the uncharacteristically wet weather Vancouver experienced in May, which is when cycling should be in full swing.

Leslie Vice - director of marketing with Different Bikes in Ambleside, and former professional rider- talks winterizing your biking routine.

“Fenders are the most important because of the constant rain in Vancouver,” she advises.

You can even fashion a fender extender on the side of the road: Simply chop a water bottle in half and attach it to the end of the fender.

Protecting your eyes from the pebbles and other debris concealed in muck is also key, so pick up some clear-lensed glasses.

Reflective outerwear is a staple - and arguably the most important - item in the winter cycling outfit; under layers are also important to keep you toasty and comfortable.

One last piece of advice from the avid rider who has cycled in all weather patterns.

“Be careful with shoulder checking, it’s certainly more dangerous because it’s darker out,” says Vice.

Cycling’s winter tune-up

John Weston - MP for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country - is sitting in his bike shorts for his informal phone interview on year-round cycling.

He has just arrived at the parliament buildings in Ottawa by bike, in a 20-minute commute that gives Weston a chance to clear his head.

There was an initial grappling with the challenge of getting a suit and tie into a backpack, until he learned the magic of a dry cleaning bag.

Weston’s cycling and other exercise routines shifted into top gear ahead of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games when he challenged fellows MPs and Senators to take part in a parliamentary fitness initiative.

Set aside 20 minutes and 10 seconds, twice weekly for walking, running, cycling or swimming, was the breakdown of the memo on exercise. Weston even lead the pack by organizing a 6:45 a.m. run and swim two days out of the week. He was also instrumental in creating a shelter for bikes on parliament hill.

“One MP lost 40 pounds,” says a proud Weston.

West Vancouver’s fit MP describes one of his first cycling commutes, from Dundarave to downtown Vancouver, as highly scenic. He traversed through five distinct geographical zones, from the mountainside to the sea.

“You observe more when you don’t have a ton of steel around you,” he adds.

In September, Weston rolled through West Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast and Sea to Sky Country on his original 1974 Norco 12-speed, meeting with constituents along the way in a three-day event deemed ‘Ride the Riding’. Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition’s North Shore vice-chair Peter Scholefield joined Weston on his quest to promote a healthy lifestyle.

The hilly terrain in Sea to Sky country was not foreign territory for Weston. Last year he rode the GranFondo - a mass participation cycling event that snakes its way from downtown Vancouver to Whistler every year. It took Weston a respectable five hours to complete.

“I’m one of these strange characters that likes climbing hills on bikes,” he laughs.

The clientele observed at Ambleside’s Café Crema on a Wednesday in

September at 1:30 p.m.: Two seniors with golf clubs in tow, a new mom

fawning over a cooing baby in his stroller, two suited businessmen talking

shop - and a young woman soaking up the sun in a bikini top and shorts.

There is a social culture at “upscale casual” Crema - as described by the

owners - that does not discriminate. It’s one of a few local coffee spots

where moms can execute U-turns with a twin stroller in the foyer.

Perhaps it’s their warm Greek heritage shining through – the Giannakos

family embraces the entire West Vancouver community at their café.

On this particular afternoon, family patriarch Tarry Giannakos has a smile

and more than a few moments for his regular patrons. He stands outside in

front of a collection of occupied tables and cozy chairs that line the south

perimeter of the café – facing the view.

“We got lucky and were able to secure a location that is 300 feet from

the Pacific Ocean and one of the best seawall walks in North America,”

says a jovial Tarry.

Another European influence at Crema is their coffee, which the owners

take very seriously. The café is part of a new rare breed of coffee bars that

have a multi-roaster model.

Coffee connoisseurs don’t need a menu at Crema. The unlisted ‘Gibraltar’

packs a couple shots of espresso, and foamed milk that has reached a

sweet caramelization - into a five-ounce serving.

All of the food at the café – from the mainstay raspberry coffee cake to

the generous-sized sandwiches - is made on-site from scratch by a resident

chef and foodie.

Stop by Crema on the weekend and indulge in one of their signature

brunches: Poached free-range eggs on an evenly buttered piece of

multigrain toast blanketed with Prosciutto di Parma and a white wine

sauce.

“When you break the egg with your fork it drizzles onto the bread,”

describes Tarry, provocatively.

Brunch is served from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the weekends.

Café Crema is located at 1495 Bellevue Ave. Hours of operation: 6 am to

6 pm Monday to Friday and from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the weekends.
