Statement of SignificanceBeverly functioned as the original county seat for Randolph County from about 1787 until 1897. The original courthousewas a log structure that was unsatisfactory. A committee was tasked in 1808 with building a new courthouse and jail. This structure was completed in 1815 on the same site as the log structure. The building served as the courthouse until1894. In the late 19th century, the nearby town of Elkins grew significantly due to the railroad, timber and coalindustries and there was a movement to relocate the county seat there. Beverly constructed a new, larger courthousein 1894 in an attempt to head off relocation of the county seat. However, the new courthouse burned "under suspiciouscircumstances" in 1897 and the records were saved and moved to the old 1815 courthouse. Finally, Elkins becamecounty seat in 1899. This building was used as a store, and other commercial structures were built adjacent to it. Thebuilding was acquired by the Historic Beverly Foundation in 2004? and has been restored for use as a museum. The Beverly Courthouse is listed in the National Register as a contributing resource in the Beverly Historic District.
