Attendance at Gladstone West State School

Our fantastic PBL committee is looking at developing new ways to continue to grow the culture of PBL at Gladstone West State School. Starting this week we will be publishing a PBL section in our newsletter each week. It was identified in 2016 through the School Opinion Survey that behaviour was something parents, students and staff wanted improved. At Gladstone West SS the PBL Team (Positive Behaviour for Learning) have been working tirelessly to improve the behaviour of our students and the strategies and systems we have in place. This can be seen through the implementation of Gladstone West SS Behaviour Steps and in recent times our West Star Chart to encourage positive behaviour.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is used to help schools develop a positive school environment, where all students are included and feel safe and supported to improve student learning outcomes. PBL provides the framework for a proactive whole school evidence-based approach to behaviour support within the school community. Every member of the school community (school staff, parents and students) has a role to play in creating a safe, supportive and disciplined school environment, where students can learn and achieve.

Each fortnight the PBL team come together to analyse data about school performance and school wide behaviour. The data captured then informs the school on the fortnightly PBL focus taught in each classroom. Teaching students expected behaviours goes beyond just the classroom. The PBL team believe it’s important that these fortnightly focuses are explicitly taught and reinforced at home.

The PBL team believe it is important to move towards sharing the analysed data with staff, parents and students in order to develop a safe and supportive learning environment with the support of the school community. This information will be shared within the newsletter weekly so that the staff, parents and students can work together to make sure all students feel included, feel safe and supported to ensure their educational experience at Gladstone West SS is the best.

Roll Up…Roll Up! Instrumental Recruiting for 2020 has begun!

We are excited to invite students to apply to join our school Woodwind, Brass and Percussion program for 2020. The year 3 classes have been attending a series of demonstration sessions at 2:00pm each Thursday as part of our Instrumental Music recruiting process for Woodwind, Brass and Percussion for 2020. To date they have seen and heard instruments from the Woodwind family (Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone and Tenor Saxophone), the Brass family (Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone Horn, Euphonium and Tuba), and the Percussion family.

On Thursday 5th September (Week 8) all year 3 students who are not already in the Instrumental Music Program will be given application forms to apply to join the Instrumental Music program in 2020. Application forms will also be available from the school office for any student from years 4 or 5 who are interested in applying to join the Woodwind, Brass or Percussion program in 2020. Application forms need to be completed and returned to the school office no later than week 10, Thursday 19th September. Instrument suitability testing will be carried out in Term 4. All applicants will be tested on all instruments. Offers will be made according to the need to retain balance within the program, and matching the most suitable student to the vacant instrument positions within the program. For 2020 we are looking to recruit 3 Flutes; 5 Clarinets; 1 Bass Clarinet; 2 Alto Saxophones; 1 Tenor Saxophone; 3 Trumpets; 3 Low Brass (Trombones/Baritone/Euphonium/Tuba); and 3 Percussion players. Many thanks for your support and encouragement of our future musicians.

Students in Year 4 are invited to attend ‘The Twits’ performance being held at the Gladstone Entertainment Centre on Thursday 12th September. The cost per student for this performance is $15.00 and is payable to the office no later than Wednesday, 11th September with completed permission note and medical form. Students will be travelling to the Gladstone Entertainment Centre by bus, departing the school at 12pm and returning at 2pm. Please complete the permission slip that went home with all year 4 students yesterday and return it along with your payment to the office or class teacher as soon as possible so numbers can be confirmed.

This week in science the students in 5A were working with shoeboxes, mirrors and torches to create a light path through a shoebox maze. Students were allowed only 2 mirrors and had to use their knowledge of light to work their way through the maze.

6D has been doing a lot of work in class but it has been the chances out of the classroom that really has shown their leadership skills the most. In both weeks 6 and 8 we have been paired up with a grade 2 class to help them with their skipping assessment. Each of the 6D students have risen to the challenge and have enjoyed seeing their younger peers grow and succeed. All of them are getting very good at remembering the “teddy bear, teddy bear” rhyme. I must admit it has been a proud moment seeing the encouragement from the grade 6’s to their younger counterparts. Great job 6D!

In prep C we have been busy learning rhyming words and writing rhymes. Sometimes rhyming words have the same letters at the end, like fish and wish, but sometimes they don’t, like one and won!!

You are cordially invited to 34D, 4B & 4C All Stars Event (Pitch Night). When: Thursday 5th September 4:45pm for a 5pm start 5:00-5:30pm 3/4D students 5:30-6:00pm 4B students 6:00-6:30pm 4C students Where: Music Room This night allows students to come together to pitch their ideas to a panel, parents and other students. It is a chance for students to reflect on their hard work, market ideas and proudly present their achievements. Though this is not a compulsory event, it would be greatly appreciated if all group members could attend to share the presenting amongst their group. So that students can prepare for the night, please let us know if your child is unable to attend so that their group can plan around this. This can be done by returning below form to your child’s classroom teacher as soon as possible. If you are attending the GWSS All Stars Pitch Night, we ask you wait outside the Music Room until the previous class has left the room, as seating is limited and we would like to reduce distractions to those presenting. The P&C will be cooking a FREE sausage sizzle outside the Music Room (funded by the EPP profits) to thank-you for supporting this program. Soft drinks will be an additional cost. Thank you for your ongoing support of this program and your children.

Let’s celebrate our students and

their amazing businesses!
